Gratis: One Of The Perks Of My Job

One of the coolest perks about my line of work, is that I sometimes receive product gratis.

What many companies will do whenever they launch a new product, is provide training classes for all the salespeople, educating them on the ingredients and benefits so that they have a better understanding of how the product works. They will also (at times) give each salesperson the product to try so that they have a hands-on experience using it, whether it be skincare, makeup, or fragrance. And I think that’s a wise idea because the more someone knows about a product, the more knowledgeable they will be in selling it to customers. Also, it makes a salesperson passionately excited to suggest the product.

When I first got into this industry, companies were extremely generous with gratis, but over the years have gotten very conservative. God, when I first got hired with Chanel Beauty in the mid-90's, they had a 3-day training seminar and sent me home with TONS of gratis after each day. By the end of the third day, my apartment looked like it had been previously rented by Coco Chanel herself.

Yet, now we're lucky if we even get a small sample of a new product to try.

However this new job I have, offers their sales staff monthly training classes in all the products they sell in their store, and also believes in being extremely generous with gratis.

For instance, Wednesday morning I had a two-hour training class on about six different product lines. We watched videos, asked questions, and got acquainted with how to use each product. And I have to say, it was very enjoyable and informative. When the class was over, the store manage handed each one of us a HUGE bag of gratis, which not only contained the products we were trained on that day, but also many other items.

Now before going on, I should tell you that I’m a natural born product junkie who gets high on experimenting with new products. So when I opened my bag and saw what was inside, I almost keeled over from junkie hyperventilation. I started jumping up and down as if Santa Claus had just handed me an entire bag of my favorite toys. I kept saying, “Oh, thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I love you! Love you! Love you!”

Here’s what was in my bag…

And by the way, this picture does not show ALL of what was in my bag because some of things I received were makeup products, which I gave to one of the females I work with.

Oh, and I also need to mention that the first week I worked there, I was given FULL-SIZE gratis products of shampoo, body wash, sunscreen, and face wash to try on myself.

Yup, as you can tell, I'm lovin' this new job!

And what’s really amazing is that after using these skincare products for only two days, my epidermis looks like a baby. In fact, several people have not recognized me. I was even carded the last time I tried to buy a bottle of red wine because the checkout person thought I was underage.

As proof, here are some photos I took of myself, using the self-timer on my camera.

Have a faaaaaabulous weekend everyone!
X

  1. Whoa! That IS a lot of freebies! I am especially interested in hearing your opinion on the StriVectin.

Totally agree with you on the importance of sales training! When I managed the home goods area in a dept store, I used to go to those and they were so informative. Of course, I was never handed a piece of Hartmann luggage or Croscill curtains when I left. All we got were mugs and magnets!

  2. Hey there Bijoux!

"Whoa! That IS a lot of freebies!"

I know, isn't that A LOT of freebies? I was floored when she handed me that bag!!

"Totally agree with you on the importance of sales training!"

Amen! I think training is SUCH an important part of sales because when you're educated well, it's easier to sell.

" I am especially interested in hearing your opinion on the StriVectin."

I tried StriVectin when it first came out because we were given a tube. And I have to be honest, I didn't see THAT much of a difference. However, they changed (enhanced) the formula a few years ago, so I may find greater results. If I do, I will be sure to let you know.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, my friend. Have a SUPER weekend!

  3. Good news that you're enjoying the new job. Agree about the training, something they seem to have dropped in my local store. I mean, how can we (successfully) choose something we know nothing about if the sales person can't tell us. I'm so pleased you now have baby soft skin, if you have a specific product that did that please pass it on to those of us who are struggling!

Hope you have a great weekend x

Great post, Ron! I'm so glad you're able to get all those freebies. Sadly I'm not surprised that companies have become more stingy over the years. That's just the way things seem to be going.

However, I don't think you need any skincare products to look boyishly handsome. You look much younger than your years already! But I like how you got carded! That most have been a hoot!

Have a great weekend, buddy! Now put on your best diaper and get out there and shake your epidermis!

    Take care!

  5. Ron, I would love to have your job because as you already know, I'm a product junkie. My girlfriend refers to me as a product whore. I love trying new things. You should see my bathroom, it's full of skincare, shampoo, shower gel and makeup. I even have a Clarisonic and I love that thing! I've always thought that I should get a part time job working in cosmetics, just so I could get the discount and the gratis. And wow, that's a lot of great stuff you got in your gratis bag. I'm jealous. And btw, I've used DDF products before and they're great.

The photographs of you as a baby are so cute! I laughed myself silly. They're hysterical!

Great post, Ron. Have a wonderful weekend x

  6. Good morning Valerie!

Thank you, yes, I am really enjoying this new job. And not only for the perks, but also because I'm learning a lot about products I knew nothing about. It's been a very nice change.

"I mean, how can we (successfully) choose something we know nothing about if the sales person can't tell us."

Exactly. So, I think it's important for those us behind the counter to stay updated with products through training.

" if you have a specific product that did that please pass it on to those of us who are struggling!"

Will do. In fact, now that I'm working at this new place, I plan on posting more product reviews throughout the month.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a lovely weekend!

    X to you and Joe!

  7. Hey there Rob!

"Sadly I'm not surprised that companies have become more stingy over the years. That's just the way things seem to be going."

You are so right about that. Back when I first started in this industry, the training and gratis that was provided for us was amazing. However, over the years it's been dwindling down to nothing. And that's sad because having these training classes really gets you psyched to promote their products. I don't think these companies realize the importance of taking care of the people who work for them, because we're the ones on the sales floor doing the selling.

"Now put on your best diaper and get out there and shake your epidermis!"

    HAHAHHAHAHA! That CRACKED me up!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, buddy. Have a SUPER weekend!

  8. Ron, you totally CRACK me up -- love your "baby" photos, too!

What a fabulous gig you've got going! You're so right -- receiving products to try first helps a salesperson become more vested in their success. Years ago, the company I worked for started selling unscented Dove beauty bars in dermatologists' offices, and we were entitled to keep and use some of the samples. All I can say is, WOW! I've been a Dove fan ever since!!

Looks like you got a nice haul -- happy Friday and weekend to you!

  9. Ron, I am ROFLMAO at those baby photos of you. That last one is priceless!

My girlfriend would love your job because she would rather have products than food. Our bathroom looks like a department store of beauty items. I have to pass this post onto her because she's going to enjoy it.

Wow, that is some bag of freebies! Glad to hear you're enjoying the new job, dude!

  10. Haha omg these pictures are absolutely the perfect way to end the week. I cant stop laughing! I am so glad to hear you are loving the new job you absolutely deserve it and who wouldn't love free products? You will have to tell me exactly what you are using to make your skin so baby soft. My boyfriend has such dry skin I want to try something "manly" on him because my products are too "fruity" for him.

  11. Hey there Shae!

Tee, hee! I had a BLAST creating these baby photos over at Face In Hole.

"I am so glad to hear you are loving the new job you absolutely deserve it and who wouldn't love free products?"

Thank you :) And you're right, who wouldn't love FREE products? Yahoooo!

" My boyfriend has such dry skin I want to try something "manly" on him because my products are too "fruity" for him."

Honestly, one of the best products for dry skin (or any type of skin) is Jojoba Oil. It's awesome! You can use it on your face AND body. It absorbs quickly and has no scent. I LOVE that stuff. You can find it in any Health Food or Vitamin store. And it's very inexpensive. Here is link to a review post I shared about Jojoba Oil

  12. Wow! I won't pretend I know what any of that is, because (as you know) I don't use any beauty products. I'm having to get tips from my niece for my 'special' event that coming up, as it's been so long since I even used make up :)

I'm so happy for you, that you are now getting these perks :) I've never had 'perks' from any job I've had, but I would have been all excited, just like you, if I had!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ron, that is one big bag of goodies! I think it's awesome that this new job gives you gratis to try because it's an excellent way for you to thoroughly know about each product and give your honest feedback to the customers. Very smart! And I agree, training is so important in any job because knowledge empowers you to do a better job. I can hear the joy in your voice and how much you like this new position. I'm very happy for you and I bet you're good at what you do.

Marks' comment was hysterical! Those pics of you are hilarious.

  14. Hey ho Robert!

OMG...I was so freaking excited when I opened that bag and saw what was inside...TONS of goodies!!!!

Yes, you're so right...knowledge IS empowering because it gives you the confidence to your best.

Wasn't Marks comment hysterical? It made me HOWL! I love his sense of humor!

Well...make that TWO awesome jobs that you love. I am wondering if this particular job is in one of my favorite places...perhaps Ulta?? LOOK at those baby pics of you...even my husband was laughing hysterically as I read him your post!! He is not often interested in my blogging, but he loves your writing style AND especially your pictures and movies!! Rock ON my friend and have a fabulous weekend!! xo

" I am wondering if this particular job is in one of my favorite places...perhaps Ulta??"

I can't really say which company it is, but I can say that it's very much like a Sephora. However, it's a family owned and smaller company from the east coast.

Much thanks for stopping by and for your ALWAYS supportive and kind words. You're a sweetheart. And please tell your husband I said thank you too :)

Have a faaaaaaaaabulous weekend, my friend!

Being in public service for so many years, gratis is a foreign concept, as is knocking off early on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve. God forbid the taxpayers who pay my salary should ever give me a couple hours pay for work I didn't do once a year (tongue in cheek!)!

  26. Hahahaha....there's just something about your ability to tack you face to things that makes me giggle. And wow...talk about smart business folks. Train your folks well and give them the experiences with the product. Sometimes it's about HOW to use the product that makes the sale. I tend to think more is better. LOL. NOT true sometimes...and folks who use stuff know this and spare me over use....which keeps me as customer. ( if that makes sence! LOL ) Lovely experience this new job affords you. Your current full time employer gets the benefit from you having it....so it's win/win/win!
    I'm excited for you!!

  27. Hiya Mel!

OMG...I LOVE playing over at Face In Hole with those pictures! You should try it sometime because it's so much fun!

"Sometimes it's about HOW to use the product that makes the sale. I tend to think more is better. LOL. NOT true sometimes...and folks who use stuff know this and spare me over use....which keeps me as customer."

You're absolutely right, it's about informing/educating the customer about HOW to use the product. And I used to be like you, I thought more is better, but it's not always true. It's more about using less, but using it consistently over a period of time.

And thank you, I am soooo loving this new job. I needed this job, not only for the hours, but more so for the change. And it's been a very refreshing change.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Hope you had an AWESOME weekend with the Bug!

  28. hahahahah. i love full size and small size samples. the stuff you got in the photo looks useful and i'm sure plenty expensive in the store. it's smart to give them out, like you said to become familiar with them. nothing beats word of mouth advertising.

  29. AkelamaluJune 09, 2014

What a fab job! I love it when I buy beauty products etc and get samples, in fact I always ask for samples! Some companies are really generous but some are very 'tight' i.e. Jo Malone will very rarely give samples :(

    ReplyDelete
  30. " I always ask for samples! Some companies are really generous but some are very 'tight' i.e"

You are so right about that, Pearl. Years ago, companies were very generous with samples, however, they've cut back tremendously and I think that hurts the business because people want to try something before they invest.

    LOVE Jo Malone!

Thanks so much for stopping by, m'dear! Have a lovely week!

  32. SCORE! How exciting! I've got one for you to try. It's called Skinue and is made with camel's milk. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if they send out samples. They were one of my student's strategic communications capstone clients this past semester. I think I know how you're going to spend your weekend!

I love investigating new products :)
