And for the ones that do go pro, content selection becomes a very careful consideration."

Great guestion! Personally, I think most blogs that have gotten popular and gone pro (say, like, Dooce) it was mere chance. However, she has developed her blog commercially AFTER she became popular. But I don't think she ever intended or planned to make her blog that way.

Also, I think there's a difference between a personal blog (like Dooce) and a topic blog (like ProBlogger). Topic blogs I think are more ruled by content consideration because it's about a specific topic. Where as, a personal blog has more freedom to be diverse in content.

"Even for the not-yet-pro bloggers who advertise, there is sadly sometimes an obligation for the blogger to write copy for the advertisers' products. How depressing that must be!"

True. And some bloggers do write copy for the advertisers at times. Sponsored posts.

THAT, I couldn't and refuse to do even on my own blog.

However, running ads on a blog I honestly don't have problem with. As long as they're not ALL OVER THE PLACE and distracting me from reading. Dooce is actually starting to get that way. WAAAAAAAAY too many advertisements on her blog.

"The conversation you had with Jen must have included some words right out of my own head. I'm sure it must have been nice to say them out loud to another person who completely understood."

Yes, Jen and I had a very nice chat. I only wish it could have been longer. I had to work more hours than I initially thought, so we didn't have a lot of time. But, it was QUALITY.

And one day, I have a feeling you and I will meet. And it will be just as enjoyable!

Thanks for stopping by this evening, Diane.

Have a great week!

X to you and Cristybella!Ronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15977027331657615697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092603952139807812.post-86233477740383468552011-09-20T00:26:18.517-04:002011-09-20T00:26:18.517-04:00Hey Crystal Chick~

I don't think I've ever...Interesting topic!
I don't think I've ever really put up any posts to please specific readers. My blogs have always been mainly for me. That's not to say that I don't wish I had more readers/comments because it would be great to have a few more contacts (I'm a Sag for crying out loud, we LOVE people!!!) but it's not always that easy. I have gone to other pages and left comments but not everyone reciprocates. Alot of bloggers have their regular readers and blogs they like to visit and they aren't necessarily looking to expand on that. And I don't always have time to read new blogs on a regular basis either.

I looked at my post page and there was a time I had more readers but some of them don't blog anymore and others may have started new blogs that I didn't end up following and a couple people I see on FB occasionally. I'm actually posting on FB much more often than I am at any of my blogs.

So these days, I have a small handful of regular readers and I adore them! Everyone is welcome at my blogs but I don't post regularly... ooh, speaking of... I guess I need to update the jewelry and Reiki blogs, huh?! LOL

Blogging has always been a curious thing. There are people I read and think they are brilliant but the person only gets about 3 comments and then other blogs are soooo boring I can hardly follow along and they get lots of comments.

The most comments I got was when I was doing a giveaway... free earrings and a video and a couple other odds and ends. LOL People like free stuff!!
And one blog post I remember putting up last year that got NO comments was about the Islamic center in NYC. I don't know if it was the wording or my opinions but not even a regular left a note on that one. You just never know.

As you know, I enjoy your blog and try to comment often!! I don't always get to your review or photog blog though but when I update my other blogs I'll come by and catch up.

Have a wonderful week. Yo...That is what I love about your blog though Ron. You are serious one day, peeyourpants hilarious the next. There have been reflective posts and somber ones, but always true to your voice. I like to think that I write for me (especially now that I am also writing for so many others), but I know that there just might be stuff in there that I think will fly with my regular readers too. I figure that if I want to write something that doesn't fit in with my blog, I can either fit it into another blog, a journal or even into a friend's head via old-fashioned verbal communication. This is a good reminder though to be true to you.Katherine Krigehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00737873330498032718noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092603952139807812.post-32057249662189948362011-09-19T23:08:18.931-04:002011-09-19T23:08:18.931-04:00Howdy Herman~
"Blogging should be something ...Howdy Herman~

"Blogging should be something you *want* to do, and not something that you *need* to do. I too have seen blogs start up then quickly fall apart because, well, they became work and not a source of enjoyment."

THANK. YOU.

I have always said, that when the enjoyment of blogging is no longer an enjoyment for me, I will stop. But, so far it's still such an enjoyment.

"I blog to maintain a sense of discipline. Coming from a military background it's nice to have a mission to accomplish at the end of the day. It's deadlines that I love, and since I enjoy writing and sharing a blog is the perfect outlet for me."

You said it!

Not only do I blog because of the self-expression and social/community aspects. But also, because it's good training for the day when I may be writing for a living and NEED to make deadlines. That's why I set a posting schedule for myself. Blogging is such a wonderful way to practice our writing skills and improve. It's also a great way to stretch ourselves and take chances.

It's OUR space to do whatever we want with it.

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your imput on the post, buddy! You've added MUCH!

And please know what a joy it's been getting to know you through our blogs.

I'm so proud to have you as a blogging bud!

Have a super week!

X to you and the family!Ronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15977027331657615697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092603952139807812.post-77089426102103951422011-09-19T22:50:56.880-04:002011-09-19T22:50:56.880-04:00Hiya Mel~
I LOVE YOU, DEAR LADY!
Love you not on...Hiya Mel~

I LOVE YOU, DEAR LADY!

Love you not only for your honest comment, but also because you totally blog for the reason I mentioned in this post....

....being true to YOU!

And NO, you don't suck. Not at all. Because your blog is what it is - YOUR self-expression. No explanation. It just is. And I think that's freakin' awesome!

In the whole time I've been blogging with you, I've never known you to concern yourself with readership, comments, stats, etc. You simply BLOG.

And that's what blogging is all about.

So no, you don't suck. You ROCK!

"The readings--there for me.
The photos--there for me!!
See....*laughing* It's ALL about MEMEME, didn't I tell ya that longggggggggg ago?!"

That's it!

" I just need to go to the beginnings and go forward. 90% of that's the 'feel', 10% is what's there in black and white. (if that makes sense......)"

Yes, that makes perfect sense to me because I'm the same way. I can instantly 'feel' a person through their blog when I visit for the first time. And if I like the feeling, I stay. But if I don't, I don't.

Which is WHY I blog with YOU. I like the 'feel' of you (no smartie remarks about how I phrased that please - HA!).

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing the fullness of your comment.

And thank you for your sweet and kind words. They touched me deeply.

Please know that I ditto your entire last paragraph to you, dear lady.

"It's the YOU I've been graced to watch evolve, the YOU I've been graced to cross paths with.....oh geeze........eons ago. It was a good call then.....

Obviously I have excellent taste."

TOLD ya it was all about ME!

Have a faaaaaaabulous week, Mel!

(((((((((( Mel )))))))))))))Ronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15977027331657615697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7092603952139807812.post-45262122387565582952011-09-19T22:36:52.983-04:002011-09-19T22:36:52.983-04:00Preach on, brother! It's impossible to please...Preach on, brother! It's impossible to please everyone, so why bother. Blogging should be something you *want* to do, and not something that you *need* to do. I too have seen blogs start up then quickly fall apart because, well, they became work and not a source of enjoyment.

I blog to maintain a sense of discipline. Coming from a military background it's nice to have a mission to accomplish at the end of the day. It's deadlines that I love, and since I enjoy writing and sharing a blog is the perfect outlet for me. Not everyone is going to enjoy my work, but the people who stop by day after day are my kind of people. Bloggers like us (I'm speaking of you, me, and the people on our blogrolls) make up a niche community, and it's one that I'm proud to be a part of.

Keep on blogging!HermanTurniphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15448138758753193112noreply@blogger.com
