Post updates by email:

Allow me to preface this post by saying that just because I love cats, doesn’t mean I don’t love dogs.

I repeat…

Just because I love cats, doesn’t mean I don’t love dogs.

And the reason I stress this point is because out of the four years I have been blogging, I’ve noticed that some of the most heated comments in blogland have resulted from people debating cats versus dogs and dogs versus cats. In fact, last year I wrote a simple post about one of my previous cats and deleted a comment because someone said something very nasty about cats. Needless to say, that someone is no longer welcomed here.

That being said, I love and respect dogs equally as much as I do cats. In fact, I was raised in a family that had dogs as pets. As well as, bunny rabbits, ducks, turtles, and hamsters. However, it wasn’t until I got much older did I learn to love and appreciate cats.

I think one of the main reasons why people don’t like cats is because they can’t control them.

Cats do whatever they want; whenever they want to.

Cats have taught me one of the most valuable lessons in life.

I cannot control anyone.

Oddly enough, that was the most freeing feeling in the world because my nature is to want to control.

Many believe that cats are not affectionate, which is a total misconception. They can be very affectionate, but on their own terms. And if you think about it, some people are affectionate and others are not. If you could have seen how affectionate my parents’ cat was with my father on his deathbed, you would be amazed at how loving and loyal cats can be. That cat barely left my fathers side until he passed away.

Many people believe that cats are too independent, therefore what’s the point of even having one? I for one admire independence, so perhaps that’s why I love them.

Many believe that cats are less like people, which is also a total misconception. They are very much like people because people have moods and certain times when they don’t feel like being bothered. Cats need their space. So do people.

Cats are as much like people as people are different. Each cat is unique.

I suppose the main reason why I love cats is because they dance to their own music; drumming to their own beat. You can stand on your head, beg, plead, and bargain to try and get a cat to do something, and they’ll look at you as if to say, “Excuse me…..but are you talking to ME?”

I would like to close this post by sharing a short video I discovered through a delightful blogger friend of mine, Jan, over at Finally Getting To Even.

This video is only one from a brilliant series of animated cartoons that have been created by London artist Simon Tofield, entitled, Simon‘s Cat. So, if you have some time this weekend, please stop by to view more of his brilliant videos. They’re hysterical!

The first time I saw this video, I played it FIVE times and laughed until my teeth vibrated out of my mouth.

Yes….this is WHY I love cats.

Wishing you a purrrrfect weekend everyone!

Meow….X

  2. man this post was awesome ron! 1. because you explained thee very reason people may not like cats. they can't control them. people have tried to get my cat to come to them and would should would stare at them, like you gotta be kidding me, they would say if she was a dog, she'd be over here by now. that's it. control. thank you brother. 2. i'm a cat. i am soooo a cat. meow.

loved the video. my cat does that every morning, that meowing crap, but the bedroom door is closed and bolted. she sticks her paw underneath though, like that's going to help. i'm a cat too and can't be controlled.

    amen.

  3. Heehee loved that. I know I write about dogs but I am basically a cat and dog lover. I had a wonderful cat called Lee, who loved me to bits ... is it any wonder I loved her back? She would climb on my lap and stretch her front legs so that they went round my neck. Then she would put her head against my shoulder and purr non-stop. She lived to 17 and I still miss her. I believe in showing respect to all animals. They all have their own characters and there isn't one that's any better than another.

  4. Bonjour Ronnie,
Now,we share a point in common;we had cats later in our lives.I also had dogs when I was growing up which was very special. But my Dad,who was actually not a mean & ruthless person, refused to have a cat.Zero-nada.He threw a fit once when a friend of mine had a kitten to adopt! Though dogs were very welcomed at home.

Iam so touched to read about your father's cat who comforted your Dad on his death bed. That is so beautiful.
I felt something of this,as one of my in-law's cats(who was attached to me;talk about control-he chose me!)lay down on my bed when I had the flu. Right on top, head hovering over me,making sure I stayed there and got better.

Maybe one day when you have more time, you may adopt another kitty?
    Happy weekend,pardner xoxo

  5. *laughing* How could ya not love that video?!

Now--about cats.... I make no bones about being a 'non-cat' person. And I admit it's because they're too much like ME. Independent, sassy, on MY terms--I control my world you do NOT.

We're both a bit egocentric and hedonistic. Oh, and on occasion (LOL), a bit manipulative.

    k....*laughing* MORE than a bit.

I suspect the darn things are drawn to me because I AM like them.
Which means I attempt to be the opposite of them when I'm in their company.
Can I just say that doesn't work? LOL
Darn things try to crawl all over me if I ignore them or if I try the old "Oh look.....a kitty--c'mere you fluffy little critter".

Yup...LOL. TOO much like me--undoubtedly they know the scam when they see it and are going to outmaneuver me, the little furballs. LOLOL

  6. I have a dog and a cat. My dog a 150 pd American Bulldog is a clown and we love him. My cat...has a mind of his own. He refuses to stay in the house and he insists on greeting the neighbors and the mailman when he comes by. He sits on the porch with us, and lays in the grass. Too much.

  7. That video is just hilarious! I am a definite cat person. A cat woman, may I add. I dance to my music, like you said. But I do purr and love lots of folks who are nice to me... and feed me candy;)

Love ya Ron! Have a merry weekend! I might just drink some bubbly.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I hear ya, girl! Me too!

I use to have a cat that wanted absolutely nothing to do with me, UNTIL she needed to eat. Then it was like, "Oh...I LOVE you Ron, feed me?"

    Bwhahahahahahahahah! I loved her, though.

So glad you enjoyed the video. This guy is so talented and REALLY knows cats!

OMG...how sweet! Both my cats lived until they were 19. I still miss them too. I really should get another one. Yes, I had a feeling your were both a dog and cat lover. I so enjoy reading your stories about your dogs. You have such a wonderful way of making them come alive through your words.

Yes, my friend....I remember last year when your kitty passed away and shared your sorrow. It's so tough losing a pet, isn't it? I remember seeing photos of him on your blog. He was such an adorable kitty!

Oddly enough, my father was the one who did not want a cat in our home, yet he was also the one who ended up being the BIGGEST cat lover of all.

I tell me people that to know a cat is to love a cat.

"lay down on my bed when I had the flu. Right on top, head hovering over me,making sure I stayed there and got better."

Oh, how sweet! Cats are one of the most unbelievable little caretakers. They truly have a healing energy about them.

Yes, one day I will most definitely adopt another kitty. When the time is right I'll just know it.

Thanks so much for stopping by this morning, my friend! Always a joy to see ya!

    Have a glorious weekend!

OMG...your comment had my rolling with laughter because we are SOOOO MUCH alike!!!

Perhaps it's our LIBRA traits that make us this way? You think? HA!

Like I shared, I am by nature a control freak, which is odd that I love cats the way I do because I have absolutely no control over them. At first it made me very angry, but then later I just started laughing at myself as I would try and get them to do something with no success.

    It was looking at myself!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

" I suspect the darn things are drawn to me because I AM like them."

I actually think they're draw to you because they can tell you're a very loving and compassionate soul. Cats are VERY perceptive!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing on this post, dear lady!

"My cat...has a mind of his own. He refuses to stay in the house and he insists on greeting the neighbors and the mailman when he comes by. He sits on the porch with us, and lays in the grass."

HAHHAAHHAAHAHAH! Don't ya just love em'?

And I bet the cat and dog get along famously, hu? My mother had a dog and cat at one time and they would cuddle with each other when they slept. A german shepherd and an angora cat. What a sight!

  17. Ron I am sad and embarrassed to say I am neither a cat or a dog person. Sadly, I have been the owner of both. I have always had dogs and I try as I might to have human like love for them but I have never felt the same about animals as I have people. I had a cat once. Her name was KIKI and she was the most elusive and confounding yet oddly endearing animal I have owned. I do think she was quite smart as she knew how to open my bedroom door and get to my bed even when I tried as I might to lock her out. as far the vet told me that was called a "love" bite but I never bought it. My kids were kind of afraid of her and I have to admit I never got used to her nipping at me. But I did care for her. She died in a horrible way...one I will tell you about in a private e-mail. Since then we have only had dogs.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Good Afternoon Susie~

Nothing to be sad or embarrassed about, my friend. Some people are simply not animal people and that's totally okay. Animals are not for everyone.

Still...I know you are a VERY compassionate and loving human being.

KIKI...how funny, because that's a nickname I have for one of my good friends in Florida.

"the vet told me that was called a "love" bite but I never bought it."

Yes, and I have known cats myself who would bite. A friend of mine had a cat once that would wait behind the wall until he came in the front door and then ATTACK him. He eventually had to give the cat away because they were just not a good personality match.

Thanks oddles for stopping by today, Susie!

    Always a joy seeing ya!

Oooooo....TWO CATS??? How fun! I had two at one time (Zoe and Jerry). He was very affectionate, while she was more aloof, but I loved them both.

  23. I'm reading your post and looking down at my cat, and I can't help but smile. You've hit it right on the head. Cats are very independent, but can be *very* affectionate towards those they know and trust. But try to give a cat a bath and...watch out!

I don't know what we'd do without our cat. She's just a cute 'lil bugger who doesn't miss a night spooning with us and meowing loudly when she knows that we're staying up too late.

Oh, and she licks our feet too. She's a loon...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Howdy Herman~

" but can be *very* affectionate towards those they know and trust."

Yes, that's the "key" with cats. Trust. And they have super intuitive skills on who to trust. That's another reason why I love them so.

"But try to give a cat a bath and...watch out!"

Bwhahahahahahahaha...I SOOOOOO know what you mean! They're like the Wicked Witch of the West when it comes to water. They HATE it!

Yes, I've seen a photo of your cat on your blog and she's absolutely beautiful. Oh, I think it's so cute that she likes to spoon with you and your wife. My one cat use to love to get under the covers when I when I went to bed at night. I know how he could breathe under there?!

"Oh, and she licks our feet too. She's a loon..."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! How funny! Well, at least you don't have to worry about ever washing your feet in the shower.

  25. Hi Ron!

GO SIMON! And as Ron said you need to see the rest of the series over at youtube. You think this one is funny wait til you see what else that cat is up to...

Ron- I think it's time. I think it's time for some fur in your life...KITTY fur! (preferably with the CAT still alive in it)...

You are so right about the independence. But that also is what makes them so darn adorable. I have had cats my entire life and I have had dogs too. My last dog died 4 yrs ago (at 18 yrs) and I was devastated. Then my 20 yr old cat died a year later. I was never going to love again...(for about 3 months that is).

Actually we started looking at more cats because Dave said I needed something else to hang onto because I was driving HIM crazy. "Stop TOUCHING ME, get off me ALL THE TIME"....(can you even imagine him saying those things to me)lol

I once heard a comedian say that dogs are great because you can yell at them when they do something wrong. They are sorry and they beg for your forgiveness until you give it to them. A cat however will be climbing up the curtains and you are screaming, "you, get down now", they look at you, say "screw you" and keep right on going...

    ReplyDelete

"You are so right about the independence. But that also is what makes them so darn adorable."

    I soooo agree!

So sorry to hear about the loss of both your dog and cat. It IS devistating when they pass away, isn't it? I lost both of mine with a year of each other. They were both 19 years old.

"I needed something else to hang onto because I was driving HIM crazy. "Stop TOUCHING ME, get off me ALL THE TIME"....(can you even imagine him saying those things to me)"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! There's nothing like a cat to cuddle with is there? I love purrring sound they make when they sleep.

"A cat however will be climbing up the curtains and you are screaming, "you, get down now", they look at you, say "screw you" and keep right on going..."

  43. So, THAT is where all those unexplained bruises I have are coming from? My cats must be having batting practice while I'm asleep? LOL

You can stand on your head, beg, plead, and bargain to try and get a cat to do something, and they’ll look at you as if to say, “Excuse me…..but are you talking to ME?” - I loved this part and it is SO true...

I had seen the video before and he got it so right. So enjoyed seeing it again.

And I have to agree with Herman on the giving a cat a bath part. Funny...we got home from VA last night and Poe smelled like he had been rolling on something dead so we gave him a bath. NOT A BRIGHT IDEA!!! He wasn't a very happy camper but he smelled a heck of a lot better. I think the scars will heal nicely though.... mine, not his! LOL
