Once upon a time, there was a period in my life (like 15 years ago) when I actually watched television and was aware of what shows were popular.

Currently, I only use my TV to watch DVD’s.

It’s as if my total interest in television has flatlined.

I think the last time I consistently watched TV was when Golden Girls and Designing Women were on.

What? Was that back in the 80’s and 90’s?

Oh….and don’t laugh, I also watched all the nighttime soaps like, Dallas, Dynasty and Falcon Crest.

However, my absolute favorite was Knots Landing.

I was so addicted to this show, that my entire life revolved around 10:00 Thursday nights. I even told a director who had cast me in a show one time, that I could NOT rehearse past 9:00 p.m. on Thursdays because I HAD to be home to watch Knots Landing, pronto!

Wasn’t I a DIVA?

You should have seen how I reacted as each season came to a cliffhanging closing, and then had to wait all summer to find out what happened. I bit my fingernails for TWO months!

And you should have seen how incapacitated I became when the show finally went off the air. I lost my will to LIVE.

I can still remember how on Thursday nights I'd invite some friends over, and at 9:45 we'd fire up a doobie and catch a buzz just before the Knots Landing theme song started.

The great thing about Knots Landing was that it had the best storylines. It was a show that people could identify with because it was about things that happened to normal, everyday people.

It also had some if the greatest actors like, Julie Harris, William Devane and Michele Lee.

Earlier this week while rummaging through some old VHS tapes (YES…I STILL HAVE VHS TAPES), I came across something I had taped a long time ago. It was the Knots Landing final episode, and a special feature which included a Knots Landing Block Party. All the main characters sat around the cul-de-sac; telling stories of what it was like being on the show for FOURTEEN years.

I was instantly transported to another time, and got that wonderful excited feeling in my stomach as I had each night while watching the show - memories of how that show effected even the fashion and style of the times.

Back then, I was still a licensed cosmetologist, and can’t tell you HOW MANY clients would come into my salon with photos of either Donna Mills, Joan Van Ark or Lisa Hartman; asking if I could make their hair and makeup look like them.

WTF? Did they think I was the great David Copperfield?

EVERYONE wanted their eye makeup to look like Donna Mills.

EVERYONE wanted that blonde wispy-look like Joan Van Ark.

And if they couldn’t have Joan Van Arks' hair, Lisa Hartmans' spiral perm was their next choice.

Yes, those where the days my friends. The days when Ronnie was coiffing hair and still watching TV; anticipating all summer long those tormenting cliffhangers…..

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

  1. Hi Ronnie,
Talk about being hooked; you had a technicolor monkey on your back!! I had no idea about this.
I can just imagine how it was to plan your life around this. That is getting bad...

I am thinking about when I lived in the US, and I was not hooked on a particular show. I skipped the Dallas(I didn't care who shot JR!), as well as Knot's landing & Dynasty. Though, I picked and chose and watched what I liked.

Since living in France, I probably have watched more US series and TV films than when I lived in the States! I have had a few favorites since the 90's and since year 2000. But, if I missed one, I didn't make a fuss.

Have a good weekend and see you soon!

  2. At first glance I thought it said 'who stole Valerie's babies' ... I was a bit feverish when I saw that.

TV viewing is not my thing right now, in fact I think the big switch-off is a big thing with the UK public. I never saw Knots Landing but I was once a soap addict, and I don't mean the washing kind ... heaven forbid! But one year, I forget which, when I realised that all the soaps were running the same theme, I questioned what I was getting out of life being stuck in front of the TV. I haven't watched one since and that was umpteen years ago. In fact, I went off the whole idea of being glued to the box. Give me DVDs and radio any day. Please!

I wish our girls could get back to looking like Joan and Donna, the scruffy hair styles these days are awful. Long and unkempt, that's what girls look like lately. Oh well, now I've had a moan I'll wish you a healthy and happy weekend.

  3. 'Currently, I only use my TV to watch DVDs'

Ron, that's one more thing we have in common! I literally can't remember the last time I put the TV on to watch anything else. Maybe it was back around four or five years ago .. before I had my laptop (and the wonderful world of 24-hour communication with real people across the globe), I used to put MTV on if I woke in the night and was unable to get back to sleep.

And you're like me in that we get hooked on one particular series and get quite depressed when it's off the air. We've been watching our boxed set of Boston Legal and I'm really quite upset that we've reached the end .. again!!

Love the cosmetology story - I'd have had the wispy blonde look, BTW. And that would have kept you busy for some time!! LOL!

  4. Good morning, Ron!

I never did watch Knots Landing but those pictures brought back memories of the 1980's for me too. I sported the spiral perm and the heavy eye makeup. I also popped my collars. Oh, wait... I still do that. There were other trends that I sported as well, but they need to be kept in the past. Weren't the 80's the BEST?

I think we all need to have a national 80's block party!

I remember the biggest cliffhanger from back then... Who Shot J.R.? It seemed like YEARS before we found out!

    Have a wonderful weekend, sweetheart!

    XOXO

  5. Yes, I too remember Knots Landing. I wasn't a die hard fan but did watch. I can't get over that perm! When I was a kid I would get those perms too. Not a good look. Have a fabulous weekend.

  6. Ron, Dear, you ARE a Diva. When someone asked for a Knots Landing hairsytle, you should have just tied the hair up in an actual Knot - would have looked better than a spiral perm.

The news reports that it's going to be hot and steamy in Philly this weekend - stay cool - or knot.

  7. I had the Lisa Hartman hair
I couldn't do the eye makeup but it's big again here in NJ, the whole smokey eye look

I used to love mocking Jane Wyman's character on Falcon Crest
she was fabulous and evil and hilarious

  8. I LOVED that show! I looked forward to it every Thursday night. Thanks for the tour down nighttime soap memory lane.

  9. Hey, Ron, great post! It's amazing how these old TV shows can take us back in time.

"WTF? Did they think I was the great David Copperfield?" There are some tricks even he can't pull off!

    Have a great weekend!

  10. I loved Knots Landing too, far more than Dallas, Dynasty and Falcon Crest. I'm chuckling here at the 'hair' in the photos - apart from Joan Van Arks who's has not really 'aged'!

  11. Greetings SnootiestKitten~

Welcome! Thank you for stopping by and sharing a comment. Nice to meet you!

"I have a friend who mocked me for my love of Brother and Sisters (which had absolutely nothing to do with my crush on Sally Field that has been around since I saw Smokey and the Bandit with my dad when I was just a little girl), and then she admits to watching Desperate Housewives."

HA! I've never heard of Brother and Sisters?!?! And OMG, I haven't seen Sally Field in anything for YEARS! What a great actress she is. I remember first seeing her in The Flying Nun, remember that?

And Desperate Housewives? Never seen that, even though I know of so many people who LOVE it!

"I wish we had more of these delicious scripted dramas, and less reality tv."

I sooooo agree! We have enough reality in life. The only reality show I've ever watched (on DVD) is Project Runway. And I have to admit, I really liked it.

Stop by anytime. You're always welcomed here!

    Have a super weekend!

  12. Hey there Barbara~

"Talk about being hooked; you had a technicolor monkey on your back!!"

HA! You said it....a technicolor monkey on my back! I was sooooooooooooo addicted to this show.

"I skipped the Dallas(I didn't care who shot JR!), as well as Knot's landing & Dynasty. Though, I picked and chose and watched what I liked."

I started with Dallas and then when Knots Landing became a spin-off, I moved over to that show. OMG...remember WHO SHOT JR????? And honestly, I can't even remember WHO shot him - HA! Falcon Crest was perhaps my least favorite, although I did love that Jane Wyman and Lana Tuner were on it.

"Since living in France, I probably have watched more US series and TV films than when I lived in the States!"

I bet. And I bet I would be the same way. I remember living in Japan and taking a peek at some of the US TV shows in my hotel room.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend! Have a grrrrreat weekend!

    X to you and D!

  13. I got nuthin on this. Never once watched that program. I might have been in college. Or maybe comatose. Didn't watch Dallas or the others either. But in hindsight, compared to the utter ridiculousness of largely unscripted reality style television programming that currently prevails, those were the days baby! Well developed characters, actors with considerable talent and thoughtfully written dialogue all converged into a good program. Wonder if the significant shift has more to do with cost or programming saturation, or competition? Would be an interesting study in the economics of entertainment. I did enjoy the sojourn back in time with you and remember those style setting looks. Sending my best from Austin xoxo much love, Diane

  14. Good Morning Valerie~

"At first glance I thought it said 'who stole Valerie's babies' ... I was a bit feverish when I saw that."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! OMG...I never even thought of that, but after looking at it again I can totally see how you saw that!

" I never saw Knots Landing but I was once a soap addict, and I don't mean the washing kind ... heaven forbid!"

    HA! Cracked me up!!!!

It's funny, because as much as I enjoyed nighttime soaps, I never got into the daytime soaps. However, when I was a kid I did watch one called, General Hospital. LOVED IT!

" I haven't watched one since and that was umpteen years ago. In fact, I went off the whole idea of being glued to the box. Give me DVDs and radio any day. Please!

I agree. Give me DVD's and music any day! I usually rent a couple of movies a week. I just recently watched a movie called, Trust, with Clive Owen. OMG, it was soooooooooooo good! Besides, being a blogger now....I find it much more entertaining than TV.

"I wish our girls could get back to looking like Joan and Donna, the scruffy hair styles these days are awful. Long and unkempt, that's what girls look like lately."

Thank you. I so agree! No style - either in hair or clothing.

Thanks so much for stopping by today, dear lady. Always fab sharing with you! Have a wonderful weekend.

" .. before I had my laptop (and the wonderful world of 24-hour communication with real people across the globe)"

I so agree with you. Ever since I got online and started blogging (six years ago), I find it much more entertaining and enjoyable. Plus, if you want to see anything on TV, we can just go over to You Tube, right?

"We've been watching our boxed set of Boston Legal and I'm really quite upset that we've reached the end .. again!!"

OMG....that's how I felt when I finished watching all six seasons of Sex and the City on DVD. I wanted to watch them all over again - HA!

Yup....that wispy blonde look was the RAGE back in the mid to late 80's!

Always great seeing ya, Jay! Mucho thanks for stopping by! Have a super weekend!

" I sported the spiral perm and the heavy eye makeup. I also popped my collars. Oh, wait... I still do that."

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA! You GO, girl! Everyone back then was getting spiral perms, and it was terrible because I hated giving them. Too time consuming. They took FOREVER to wrap.

    " Weren't the 80's the BEST?"

Yes they were! And yet, when we were LIVING in 80's we didn't really think much about it. But, I guess that's how fashion and style is - you don't realize how really cool it was until the next decade.

"I remember the biggest cliffhanger from back then... Who Shot J.R.? It seemed like YEARS before we found out!"

OMG...wasn't the the BIGGEST cliffhanger ever? And I yet, I can't even remember now WHO shot him!?!

"I couldn't do the eye makeup but it's big again here in NJ, the whole smokey eye look."

Yup, you're right....the whole smokey eye look is back. The thing about that look, is that you have to have the right shape eyes to do it on, or it makes the eyes look too small.

"I used to love mocking Jane Wyman's character on Falcon Crest
she was fabulous and evil and hilarious"

Yes! Yes! Yes! LOVED Jane Wyman on that show. And do also remember when Lana Tuner was on the show for a brief time? It's funny, because to me, Lana Tuner actually got more beautiful with age.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady! Have a glorious weekend and stay cool because I hear we're headed for ANOTHER heat wave - UGH!

"I'm chuckling here at the 'hair' in the photos - apart from Joan Van Arks who's has not really 'aged'!"

That photo of Joan Van Ark is a bit more recent than the other two. I had a hard time finding one of her with that style back then. I think she's had some 'cosmetic surgery' done.

You said it perfectly! I don't dislike all reality shows, but I can only take them in small dosages. Project Runway is my favorite. I don't watch it on TV, because I don't have cable. I watch the seasons as they come out on DVD.

" Wonder if the significant shift has more to do with cost or programming saturation, or competition? Would be an interesting study in the economics of entertainment."

OMG...you're kidding? No, I didn't hear that. I probably won't watch it though, because it's such a disappointment to watch something so classic, be revived. Some things are best left as they were - a GREAT memory.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Toooooooo funny! Yeah, they'll probably find A LOT of old Bette Davis, Susan Hayward, and Joan Crawford films.

Some, I've been able to find on DVD. Others, I have not. The thing I hate about VHS tapes is that they take up SO MUCH space!

Yes, and I mentioned that in my comment to Dianne. You have to have big eyes for that heavier, smokey look or it closes them up. But, gosh...I did LOVE the look.

Oh, Knots Landing. never saw it.

But i definitely watched Golden Girls. I was more of a 90210 era girl though. That was some good stuff.

OMG...didn't you ADORE Golden Girls? I still pop over to You Tube and watch their clips. 90210 was one that I watched too. That's when through my period of wanting to move to California!

TV does nothing much for me any more.

Yup, to us there in the U.S., too. That's why I think I enjoyed Knots the most - it seemed a bit more real, like everyday life. OMG...I was soooooooooooooo bummed when it came to an end :(

I've never seen any British soaps, however I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE British comedy! One of my blogging friends (Valerie) sometimes posts clips from the sitcom The Two Ronnies, and it makes me HOWL!

...I wonder what Donna Mills looks like now. Is she still alive? And I so wanted to look like Lisa Hartman. I didn't just want to have her hair I wanted to look like her! *sigh* Didn't she marry Clint Black, the country singer? And remember Linda Evans on Dynasty, when her and Joan Collins got into that brawl and didn't they end up in the swimming pool? lol... Gosh I adored Linda Evans back when she got her start in Bonanza too. :o)

...I too was a big fan of the Golden Girls and Designing Women, loved those shows! It seems anymore I've gotten away from television but I do love to watch Antiques Roadshow, The Good Wife and I've fallen in love with Big Bang Theory too. Bazinga! lol... ;o)

"...Oh my, the memories! My mom and I used to sit and watch Knots Landing, Dallas and Falcon's Crest all the time!"

    Yaaaaaay another nighttime soap fan!!!!

"I never did watch daytime soaps but I LOVED the primetime ones. And that theme song, I had forgotten all about that! *now humming tune* ;o)"

Me neither. The only time I ever watched daytime soaps was when General Hospital was on, back in the late 60's - HA!

Yeah, didn't hearing the Knots theme song again bring back such wonderful memories?

Yes, Donna Mills is still alive and kicking. So is Lisa Hartman. I think she's gotten more into her singing than acting. And YES, she did marry Clint Black - GOOD memory, TJ!!!

"And remember Linda Evans on Dynasty, when her and Joan Collins got into that brawl and didn't they end up in the swimming pool"

Yes! Yes! Yes! In fact, if you go over to You Tube and search "Linda Evans Joan Collins fight scene" you'll find it there. I watched it many months ago and howled! That's right....I totally forgot Linda Evans was on Bonanza! You DO have a good memory!

To me, the Golden Girls and Designing Women were PRIMO! In fact, I can still watch them on DVD and laugh my ass off like I did back then. The writing was flawless!

I've not heard of the other shows you've mentioned, but I trust you that they're good!

  38. Good morning, DIVA!! ;)
THANKS for the blast back to the past because I, too, LOVED Knots Landing!!! I think hubby even watched it with me for a couple years. I don't remember much of the storylines anymore, but I remembered many characters... like Abby. Ooh, wasn't she quite the little bitch! Karen was a sweetheart and Gary was the other Ewing brother. Hey, wasn't Alec Baldwin on it briefly? Dallas was another one that I watched pretty faithfully. Didn't get into Dynasty or Falcon Crest too much though.
I think I've always liked soap operas because my mom used to watch the daytime ones. I STILL watch the Young and the Restless! Not every day. But it's easy enough to catch up when I feel like it.

    Have a nice weekend, Ron.
p.s. they are STILL playing reruns of Golden Girls.

  39. Goooood Morning Crystal Chick~

Yahoooooo...another Knots fan! You know something? I had a feeling you were going to say that you loved Knots too!!!

OMG...ABBY! Yes, what a bitch! But brother was she flustered when Nicollette Sheridan came on the scene as Paige! Bitch competition! HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!

Yup, Gary was the other Ewing brother, you're right! And YES....Knots is the show where Alec Baldwin got his big break in Hollywood. I loved his character, too bad they killed him off the show though - he fell off a building - OUCH!

Hands down, Knots was my favorite of all of them. Dallas was my second favorite.

Oooooo.....The Young and the Restless! I had a friend in Florida who was addicted to that show. She even taped it while she was a work so she wouldn't miss a single episode!

" they are STILL playing reruns of Golden Girls."

Yeah, that's what I hear. However, I don't have cable so I can't watch it. I do, however, watch it on You Tube sometimes.

  40. O.M.G. Ronnie, this post cracked me up! I used to get spiral perms ALL THE TIME!

I never watched Knots Landing, but was an addict for Dallas and Dynasty. I remember in college, we'd have Dynasty parties on Wednesday nights. There was no bar hopping until the show was over! In fact, two of my best girl friends met some guys at the college library who told them they had a big screen TV and to come over to watch Dynasty the next Wed. night. Turned out to be the roommates of my future husband!!!! So.....in a roundabout way, I have Dynasty to thank!

  41. OK, you have got to watch some 'Only Fools & Horses' on Youtube. One of the best British sitcoms ever. I think you'll love it!

  42. Television in this household is for DVD viewing and the weather channel.
    Yes, the weather channel.

Himself is obsessed with the weather we get here--utterly and truly.
SO much that we have six counties on our weather alert radio, WHICH became a necessity BECAUSE of the flipping weather channel...WHICH serves as his safeguard for small children and grown adults.......WHICH means he calls me, call the parents of the Bug and calls my worksite to report a POSSIBLE storm....of any kind......

I'd take a hammer to the darn thing, but it'd just result in MORE of the weather channel.
Ohhhhhhh....which has proudly given us TOR-CON!! '50% chance of a tornado happening in this tri-county area'. LOL Gee, what a blessing for that front and running forecast tool!

    *shaking head*

Oh yes.....we were talking Knots Landing.
    Never watched the darn thing.

But I'm PRETTY sure I'd like that better than the flipping weather channel........

  43. Lol Ronnie! Well I gotta say I didnt know about Knots Landing but I definitely had my addicted to show. Any ironically for awhile it was on Thursday nights as well. Mine was Gilmore Girls. I admit it openly knowing the slew of jokes that may come my way. But I was so obsessed even when it went off the air I literally needed the DVD seasons. I would get so disappointed if a birthday or xmas came around and I didnt see this gift that my parents took to hiding it on me on multiple occasions. Needless to say I was also a "Diva" when it came to this show. BTW Ill be gone for a week on vacation but I will return and write a new post! See you soon!

  45. Hey there Bijoux~

"I used to get spiral perms ALL THE TIME!"

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA....how ironic is that??? And the funny about it was that I HATED doing spiral perms on clients because they took FOREVER to wrap, but they were BIG money!

"So.....in a roundabout way, I have Dynasty to thank!"

    OMG....what a FAAAAAAABULOUS story!!!!!

I liked Dynasty too. The only one I wasn't REALLy crazy-ga-ga about was Falcon Crest. However, Lorenzo Lamas was a hotty to look at - woot! woot!

Thanks sooooooooo much for stopping by and sharing your memories, dear lady. I LOVED it!!!!

Hope you're having a FAB weekend!

  46. Hey cestlavie~

" for awhile it was on Thursday nights as well. Mine was Gilmore Girls."

OMG...OMG...OMG...I TOTALLY forgot about that show!!!!!! I think I may have seen it once or twice, but that's it. And paaaaleeese....if I can admit that I was a HUGE Knots Landing addict, I would NEVER make a joke about your addiction to Gilmore Girls, because I totally understand TV show ADDICTION - HA!

Isn't it great that they invented DVD's? Now we can continue to watch our favorite shows FOREVER!

Thanks sooooooo much for stopping and sharing your memories, girl! Thoroughly enjoyed!

" BTW Ill be gone for a week on vacation but I will return and write a new post! See you soon!"

Have a WONDERFUL vacation! I'll miss ya greatly, but will look forward to your new post!

  47. Hiya Dear Mel~

"Television in this household is for DVD viewing and the weather channel.
    Yes, the weather channel."

Bwhahahahahahahahhahaha! The WEATHER CHANNEL???? OMG...how funny!

You know how I find out about the weather? I check it online every morning - HA!

Your comment about Himself and weather channel CRACKED ME UP!!!! I work with a young lady who is the same as Himself. She is OBSESSED with the weather channel. She can even repeat (verbatim) the ENTIRE weather forecast for the WEEK! And she does it just like a weather girl!

Thanks a BUNCH for stopping by and sharing, dear lady. You had me laughing my TUSH off!

Hope you're having a great weekend!

    And I hope you don't get that 50% TOR-CON.

  48. crumbs Ron I remember watching knots landing but reading your post I was trying to remember any of the plots and couldn't. It was only when I got to the end of your post I realised I couldn't remember because I didn't see many episodes. Thinking back I was probably out most nights when it was on. It was around the time when I was out most nights being young and single.

There have been years since then, that I was a slave to tv but not in the past decade. I do watch tv but not every day or even every week.

Sometimes it is good to look back at something that gave us as much pleasure as this obviously did for you.

  49. Greetings anna~

"It was only when I got to the end of your post I realised I couldn't remember because I didn't see many episodes."

Aw, shucks....it was SUCH a wonderful nighttime soap. But, it's probably best you didn't watch it because it was HIGHLY addictive. I was so sad to see it end :(

"There have been years since then, that I was a slave to tv but not in the past decade. I do watch tv but not every day or even every week."

Same with me! Back then I was a total slave to TV, yet over the years it's totally fizzled for me. If I want to watch a series that I may have missed, it so convenient now to just get them on DVD.

Thanks so much for stopping by today, my friend. Always nice to see ya! Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

  50. "You should have seen how I reacted as each season came to a cliffhanging closing, and then had to wait all summer to find out what happened. I bit my fingernails for TWO months!"

Bwahahaha! That sounds *just* like me when I was hooked on Lost. Man, not only was each episode a cliffhanger, each season finale left me more confused and hooked than ever. Watching Lost was a torturefest, but I loved it.

And speaking of television, was it Dallas that had the "it was all a dream" finale? I can't remember now....

OMG...can you believe I NEVER watched Lost? I know....I'm a HORRIBLE American! But, I know SO MANY who did and LOVED it like you.

"And speaking of television, was it Dallas that had the "it was all a dream" finale? I can't remember now..."

Yup, you're exactly right! And it's been so long since I've seen it, that I can't even remember WHAT the dream was all about?!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy! Hope you and the family had a wonderful weekend!

X to you, Karin, and Mr. Tyler!

  52. OMG, I LOVED this show! I wish is was still on in syndication and I never understood why it wasn't. It was on for so many years.

Remember that crazy Jill that was dating Gary and tried to kill Valene? Val was so annoying to me. Way too helpless.

I adored Donna Mills! Her clothes and hair and makeup were fabulous. And that CAR!! It was my goal in life to have one. Needless to say, that didn't work out.

    Thanks for the memories!!

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay....another KNOTS fan! See! We ARE twins!

"I wish is was still on in syndication and I never understood why it wasn't. It was on for so many years."

I didn't know that? For some reason I thought it did go into syndication?!!? I know, it was on for FOURTEEN years!

"Remember that crazy Jill that was dating Gary and tried to kill Valene? Val was so annoying to me. Way too helpless."

Bwhahahahahahahahahahaha! Yes....I soooooo remember that! She tried to kill Val by forcing her to take sleeping pills, so it would look like a suicide - HA!

"I adored Donna Mills! Her clothes and hair and makeup were fabulous. And that CAR!! It was my goal in life to have one. Needless to say, that didn't work out."

    Ditto for me too!!!

Thanks soooooo much for stopping by and sharing in the memories, girl!
