As you know from my post last week, we hadn't gotten any snow so far this year in Philly. However, last Sunday morning I awoke to the most delightful sight my eyes could behold...SNOW!

When I looked out my windows it was as if I were peering through one of those glass snow globes that you shake, and all the snow comes cascading down.

I suddenly started doing pirouettes around my apartment like a ballerina in the final act of the Nutcracker.

I was SOOOOOOO happy!

So after taking a shower, I threw on my jeans, turtleneck, down coat, boots, hat and gloves; then grabbed my camera and went outside to enjoy it.

And it wasn't just snowing, no, it was a BLIZZARD.

Here, take a look...

A view looking down Broad Street in Center City. This photo was taken about 12 PM, but look how dark it already was from the weather. It almost looks like nighttime.

You should have seen me walking around the streets like a little kid, sticking my tongue out while trying to catch snowflakes on my tongue. And with the snow coming down as fast and hard as it was, I had a mouth full of snow that looked like Mount Everest.

I took this shot while walking through one of the tunnels in City Hall. Look at that SNOW!

I spotted this abandoned hoodie just hanging there. This shot was also taken around City Hall.

I love when the snow settles on the bare tree branches, making it almost look as though someone took white icing and highlighted them. It's like natures work of art!

Another snow highlighted tree.

I took this shot from across the street, using my zoom lens to capture this couple standing in front of a jewelry store on 13th Street. Can you believe how hard it was snowing?!

Snow and ice on berries.

Icicles hanging from a car fender.

These last two photographs were taken on Tuesday, right after we got hit with another snowfall.

A view looking down JFK Boulevard at the Philadelphia Art Museum.

I took this shot from Love Park, looking up at William Penn atop City Hall.

Yes folks, I sure do LOVE snow.

In fact, I love it so much, I could write it...

Warning: Don't eat yellow snow.

Have a faaaaaaaaaaabulous weekend everyone!

  1. I'm so glad you're happy, Ron. I'm only happy when I look at snow through a window. Mind you, it wasn't always thus. I do have memories of building snowmen - even as an adult. Loved the photographs, especially the one at City Hall and the one of the icicles on a car's fender. So, I guess I keep praying that you have snow a while longer but only if you promise not to send it over to me. Hmmm I wonder if anyone claimed that hoodie.....

Have a wonderfully snowy weekend xx

  2. So, these are scenes from a HORROR film, right? Bahahaha.....

I'm surprised you like it so much, Ron. I would think you'd be sick and tired of it like the rest of us! The novelty wears off quickly, at least for me! Have a fabulous weekend and eat some ice cream if you want to be cold!

  3. Great photos, Ron! I really feel like I'm out there with you. You created a winter wonderland with these images.

I like snow, too--as long as I don't have to shovel it! I'm glad you're taking Frank Zappa's advice--"watch out where the huskies go and don't you eat that yellow snow!"

    Have a flakey weekend, buddy!

  4. Oh, I am so jealous of the snow you got, Ron! One of the things I miss about living up north is that first really good snowfall. Great photos! That last one made me laugh. You are so funny!

I love the shot taken from Love Park. What a beautiful view!

I hope you get more snow for Christmas. There is nothing quite like having a white Christmas!

Have a wonderful weekend, Ron! Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.x

"I'm only happy when I look at snow through a window. Mind you, it wasn't always thus. I do have memories of building snowmen - even as an adult."

HA! I know, I think I'm probably one of the only people on the planet who gets this excited over snow. OMG...I love it, I'm like a little kid!

"So, I guess I keep praying that you have snow a while longer but only if you promise not to send it over to me."

    Okay, I promise :)

We're supposed to be getting more snow tomorrow afternoon, so I'm thinking I'll be out romping in it on Sunday!

"So, these are scenes from a HORROR film, right? Bahahaha....."

Bwhahahahhahahaha! I know, to most people this WOULD be scenes from a horror film.

"I'm surprised you like it so much, Ron. I would think you'd be sick and tired of it like the rest of us!"

Noooooo...I love it, love it, love it! This is the time of the year I cherish - the cold and snow. In fact, we're supposed to get more snow tomorrow afternoon.

" and eat some ice cream if you want to be cold!"

HA! Do you know what's funny? The only time I crave ice cream is during the winter. Yeah, I know, I'm CRAZY!!!!

Much thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a FABULOUS weekend!

  7. I can't wait for snow again. I have asked Mo to take me out as soon as it falls, because if we wait a day or two we can't get out at all. We have been snowed in every year it's snowed recently. I LOVE snow, especially at Christmas.

Your photos are great. The best two, for me, are the two people walking through City Hall tunnel and the abandoned hoodie. Love them!

  8. Hey there Rob!

Thanks, buddy :) The day I took most of these photos, it was snowing so hard that I thought it was going to ruin my camera because it was snowing THAT hard. In fact, there was snow all over my camera lens.

"I like snow, too--as long as I don't have to shovel it!"

HA! That's why I love living in a city because they do all the shoving. The only time it's gets bad is a few days after it snows and the streets are covered in slushy black mush and you accidentally step in it wearing your dress shoes. UGH!

"I'm glad you're taking Frank Zappa's advice--"watch out where the huskies go and don't you eat that yellow snow!"

    HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA! Loved that, Rob!

"I hope you get more snow for Christmas. There is nothing quite like having a white Christmas!"

Oh, meeeeeee too! Only one time did it ever snow here on Christmas day and it was like a Norman Rockwell Christmas! We supposed to be getting more snow tomorrow afternoon. Can't wait!

  11. I hate snow. Well that's not strictly true, I love looking at it all crisp and white and you have got some fantastic shots there Ron, but when I have to go out in it I'm terrified of slipping and falling and driving in it is my worst nightmare! I know it's stupid but it's how I am. Anyway, you enjoy it my friend and thankyou for sharing such great photographs. x

  12. " but when I have to go out in it I'm terrified of slipping and falling and driving in it is my worst nightmare! I know it's stupid but it's how I am."

No, that's stupid, Pearl, because there is a downside to snow as well. I live in a city, so I don't have to drive in it but I do know how harrowing it can be driving a car.

But oh, isn't it great looking at snow through a window INSIDE your house; all cozy and warm?

Much thanks for stopping by, m'dear! Have a lovely weekend!

How did you make that last photo? Loved it.

Really nice photographs. My two favorites are the berries and the two people walking through the tunnel at City Hall. Nice!

I love the snow as well, I just don't like driving in it. But put me on ski slope and I'm in heaven!

Do you know, for as much as I love the snow, I have never been skiing. However, one of these days I would LOVE to try it. I've water skied, but never snow skied.

As I mentioned, when I put on the Eagles game and saw all that heavy snow falling, I knew somebody in the city of Philadelphia was a very happy boy, and probably wandering around with his camera. I just knew it! I'm happy for you. Our only amounted to a light dusting and was quickly gone, but such is life up here. At least it was pretty while it lasted!

Thank you, Geraldine! I thought of you when I posted this because I said I was gonna try and publish some photos of the snow we got on Sunday. And what a blizzard it was! We got more Tuesday, and are supposed to get more tomorrow afternoon. Can't wait!

" What a beautiful city you live in, no matter what the weather is. I love seeing all the old buildings there."

Yes, Philly really is a beautiful city. And I especially love how it looks right after it snows because all the old buildings are highlighted in white stuff; giving them even more of an historical feel.

Much thanks for stopping by, my friend. Happy weekend to you too!

  24. Hey Ron! This is another great one! The pictures were all really good. I loved all of them but the most artistic one I think is the view of the underside of the tree branches with the snow. But the first one...with the lights...wow!

The last shot made me laugh. I guess if you need to pee while outside in the snow, why not practice the art of pee writing?

  26. ron, i can appreciate snow in photos and then that's it. i do like the photo with the bike in it covered in snow, that's cool. we're expecting snow tomorrow and though it's not my favorite, i do eventually go out in it to take photo. i suppose i can like it when it settles then i can get some decent pics. i have my goodies all ready to be snowed in, but please i need more than a few inches, if it's gonna snow, do the darn thing. ;)

  27. Ron, that last photo was hysterical! What a great finale!

I was thinking of you last Sunday, when my father was watching the football game in Philadelphia and saw all that snow because I knew you were loving it! Wow, that first photograph of the view down Broad Street really shows how hard you got slammed. It really does look like a blizzard. I love the photos of the ice and snow on the berries and highlighted trees.

" It's like natures work of art!"

It sure is. And it's beautiful!

We haven't gotten much snow here, but I'm looking forward to it. I love snow too!

  28. I love the photos Ronnie they really do capture the beauty of snow. I am not a snow lover like you but I can appreciate the beauty. I happen to see the Eagles vs Lions football game in Philly and I was shocked how much snow they had to fight to play that game. It was really a sight to see!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hey Shae!

    Thank you :)

" I am not a snow lover like you but I can appreciate the beauty."

Yes, isn't it beautiful? I realize that snow can be such a hazard in many ways, but I just love how it looks coming down and how it makes everything appear so white, pure and magical!

I'm such a little kid when it comes to snow.

"I happen to see the Eagles vs Lions football game in Philly and I was shocked how much snow they had to fight to play that game. It was really a sight to see!"

OMG...can you BELIEVE the amount of snow we got on the day they played that game? I have a friend who works at the stadium and she said that practically everyone had to stand to watch the game because the seats were piled high in snow.

  30. Wow--talk about awesome photos. I loved the hoodie shot, the icicles upon icicles on the cars fender and that first shot with the streetlights on. You got sacked with a bit of snow--and I've no trouble envisioning you traipsing about the snow coveredness, gleefully being the little snow elf and happily greeting everyone that passes by who wants to commit you to the nearest mental institute. LOL I'd be dropping to make snowangels just cuz! Haven't YET...himself would have a stroke with my limitations at the moment. But it's comin'....I can feel it!! ;-)
The shots showing the snowfall on the trees are always a favorite of mine..... and the gianormous tree covered in snow at the end--amazing. You captured the snowfall well. Sometimes that's a task, but you managed it well.
Here's hoping more snow finds you so you can play and snag a few more of the upclose and personal shots you've gotten REALLY good at. Snowing here as I type. Light, wee flakes.....just a dusting they say. Darn that it's not snowmansnow.

"I enjoy the snow while it is falling and just after, then I want it to melt."

HA! I know. Snow doesn't look quite as beautiful as it does when it first falls, leaving a lot of icy mush.

  37. Last year the snow looked magical in our local park as it covered all the small tree branches like the one on your highlighted tree shot. I then went round shaking the branches like a kid in an ice cream shop and it looked great as it fell down to the ground. I love fresh snow the best.

Mind you, I'm always careful in playing snowball games because I know what's underneath when those folk don't pick up behind their dogs, ha ha ha. And I wouldn't dare think about putting any of it in my mouth.... yikes.

Your photos are so clear. Great shots

  41. Ron, anybody with a dog KNOWS not to eat yellow snow, ha!
Your photos are lovely, but the older I get, the less I enjoy snow. Yes, it's fine for the period between Dec. 12 and Jan. 5 or so, but after that, I want it GONE! I want sunshine and flowers and spring!
But the way snow decorates trees, like icing, is simple breath-taking, though I can't help but shiver, knowing how horizontal snowstorms feel -- Brrrr!
    Have a super weekend!
