The photo you see above was taken inside a Starbucks I frequent in one of my favorite areas of Philly, Old City. And that's where I was today (Sunday) on my day off, when I witnessed our first snowfall. I had heard on Saturday that it might snow, but since this has been the weirdest, and mean WEIRDEST winters of all time, weather wise, I didn't hold much stock in the prediction. I know 99% of the population is beyond happy that this winter has felt more like a cool summer rather than a typically cold winter, but to me it's been quite annoying because on Christmas day the temperature was in the high 70's, which was only a few degrees cooler than where my brother Tom lives in Florida. I actually saw people wearing shorts, tank tops and flip-flops. ON CHRISTMAS DAY. I mean the primary reason I moved back to the northeast was to experience four distinguishable seasons. But apparently that's no longer going to be happening. Nope. I think eventually there is just going to be ONE season, which will be different degrees of summer.

Anyway, enough about summer. Let's talk about winter!

Guess what?

IT SNOWED TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FINALLY!

Yup, today while sitting in Starbucks (at about 12 noon) I looked out the window and saw a few snowflakes descending from the sky. Well...you should have seen my reaction. I almost screamed out loud with joy. But instead of making a complete fool of myself, I grabbed both my Canon camera and Smartphone and RAN outside to take pictures. OMG, I did everything but throw myself on the pavement and roll around in the snow like a happy dog. And had it been a deeper snow, you better believe I would have.

I mean come on, even those of you who don't care for winter or snow have to admit that the first snowfall is MAGICAL, am I right?

For the next two hours I walked all over the lower part of Philadelphia and took pictures, while smiling and giggling. I even stuck out my tongue and tried to catch a few snow flakes. And every person on the street who walked passed me, I would say, "Isn't the snow BEAUTIFUL? Isn't the snow BEAUTIFUL? Isn't the snow BEAUTIFUL?" I literally could not stop smiling. I felt drunk with giddiness!

The only bummer about the day was that the snow didn't last long. Later that afternoon, the snow turned into rain and melted away the white stuff. But hey, at least I got to see some S-N-O-W.

Here, take a look...

Now, what I'm REALLY looking forward to are a few snowfalls (blizzards) like we had two years ago.

Kind of like this...

Have a grrrrrreat week, y'all!
X

P.S. And yes, you're not just seeing things, I have new blog template. You know me, once a year I have to do a complete blog make-over. Hope you enjoy this one...x

  1. Holy cow... AWESOME pictures!!!!! Guess what? We might get snow every two years but today WE GOT SNOOOOWWWWW!!!! My daughter and I raced outside and yes, you guessed it, stuck our tongues out to catch the snow. The flakes were HUGE... just beautiful!

I literally laughed out loud when I read that.... so funny!!!!!

My FAVORITE pictures... the horse... WOW... and then the empty swing ... CAPTIVATING, CREEPY AND BEAUTIFUL. And then the tree roots. Your photography makes me happy - I love your work!!!!

  2. I LOVE your new blog look! And of course, beautiful photos, despite the topic! LOL!

I had to shovel two days this past week, but since it was the first time all winter for shoveling, I wasn't too irritated. We got snow again yesterday and supposed to get some nasty lake effect today, so I think winter is back in full force.

I'd love to hang out at that Starbucks with you, Ronnie! XO....have a super week!

  3. Ron, even though I no longer live up north where I was born, I still miss that excitement of when it would snow for the first time during the winter. Like you said, it's magical! There are certain things I will always miss about living in the North East, and one of them is during the fall and winter months when the seasons shift.

Great photographs! It makes me miss the snow.

I love your new blog design! Did you do it yourself? I like how you change your blog look every year. It keeps things fresh.

Have a wonderful week, Ron x

  4. Ron, I noticed your blog change immediately. Very nice! I like the moving pictures at the top. I was thinking of you yesterday when it snowed. It came down very fast and hard, but didn't last long. Awesome photographs! They're all beautiful. I really love the one of the horse and carriage and the ones of the monument. I don't get down into Old City as much as I'd like. It's such a charming part of Philly. Reminds me of NY's Soho.

We've had a very mild winter so far, haven't we? But I have a feeling that we'll get hit hard the remainder of the winter.

    Have a great week, Ron!

  5. I really like your new blog makeover, Ron! Very sharp and professional looking! I may have told you this before, but my girl friend is a graphic artist and web designer so I am going to share your new design with her.

Great pictures! And I could hear your excitement about the snow in your voice. I agree, there is nothing like the first snowfall of the year. Love that first shot of the light fixtures in Starbucks.

  6. Ron, I love your photos...AND the new blog appearance! Totally awesome, my friend!

Like you, I enjoy having four distinct seasons. Not having them was one of the things that I missed living down south. Unlike you, I'm not such a fan of winter. Oh, I like snow okay -- particularly if it falls on Christmas Eve! -- but by Mardi Gras time, I'm ready for Spring! And ice?? Forget about it! Folks can't drive -- or walk -- on that stuff. And my favorite winter days are sunny, not cloudy.

The worrisome thing about having a "light" winter is that the bugs won't die off. Meaning fleas, ticks, and other critters will be troublesome once summer arrives. And I dread the thought of all those snakes I'll have to fight off, ha!

Here's hoping y'all get more snow (better you than me, heehee!!) xo

  7. I love your new template! I'm about due for a change myself, as I'm like you and tend to swap out templates on a yearly basis.

"I did everything but throw myself on the pavement and roll around in the snow like a happy dog. And had it been a deeper snow, you better believe I would have."

I would have, regardless! Any snow is cause for joy, as far as I'm concerned. Hope you end up with at least one big blizzard this winter, Ron!

  8. Hey, Ron, great photos--and they go so nicely with your blog's new look! Terrific!

I confess that I don't share your love of winter, but, yes, I do get excited at the first snow fall, Monster blizzards are another story, however, and I am just counting the days until the first buds of spring show up! Great work, buddy! Have a tremendous week!

  10. Ron, I love your new blog design! It's FABULOSO! Where did you find it? Or did you make it yourself?

Also, your photographs are outstanding! I wish I enjoyed the winter, cold and snow as much as you do. I really need to move to Florida or some other place that's tropical because I can't stand being cold. I feel cold just looking at these photos brrrrrrrrrrrr!

LOVE the shot of the horse and carriage!

  11. Aw...thank you so much, Katherine :)

"Guess what? We might get snow every two years but today WE GOT SNOOOOWWWWW!!!! My daughter and I raced outside and yes, you guessed it, stuck our tongues out to catch the snow. The flakes were HUGE... just beautiful!"

Yaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!! Yes, I saw your post earlier today and was so excited to read that YOU got snow too! And actually, I think you got more than we did here in the city. That's the thing about living in a city, the snow doesn't stay very long because of the heat from underground (the subways) and also from all the buildings. It melts fast.

I captured that photo of the horse while walking home from my day in Old City. I quickly snapped about three photos, but only one came out without being blurry. The one of the swing I took in a park that's located in Society Hill.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a terrific week!

  12. Nice makeover! What is it about the first snowfall that makes a person downright giddy?! Lovely photos. I always wish for a snowstorm in January...one that immobilizes the city so everyone must stay home, drink hot chocolate (with Bailey's), make cookies and wear fuzzy slippers. We're forecasted for snow tomorrow. We'll see...................

  13. Thank you, Bijoux! I searched and searched for a new blog design for the past two weeks and finally decided on this one. I found it on Etsy. She's such a great designer. She makes both Blogger and WordPress themes. And they're very inexpensive.

"I had to shovel two days this past week, but since it was the first time all winter for shoveling, I wasn't too irritated. We got snow again yesterday and supposed to get some nasty lake effect today, so I think winter is back in full force."

I think you're right. Today is much, much colder than it was yesterday. I think it's about 20 degrees.

I would LOVE to hang out at Starbucks with you too! And you ever come to Philly....we WILL!

Have a super week, my friend. And thanks so much for stopping by!

Yes, and yesterday while I was walking through the streets and snow, I was thinking the same thing, "I'm so glad I moved back to the northeast because I really missed this season!" I loved living in Florida for those 20 years, however, I'm so glad I'm back.

Thank you. No, I didn't design this new template, I found it on Etsy. She's a wonderful designer who makes both Blogger and WordPress themes. After uploading the template, I did customized and change things a little, but that's all.

  15. Hello there Elaine!

Thank you :) I also had a photo slider (the moving pictures) on one of my previous blog designs, but it's been awhile, so I decided to chose a template with another slider. I like having one because it's a nice way to highlight photographs and blog posts.

"I really love the horse and carriage and the ones of the monument. I don't get down into Old City as much as I'd like. It's such a charming part of Philly. Reminds me of NY's Soho."

Yup...it reminds me of SoHo too. And I think that's why I love it so much. The photos of the horse and carriage, and monument were taken in the Society Hill area.

Yes, it has been a very mild winter so far. But I think you're right, it's probably going to hit us hard for the rest of the winter. And I also think the winter will linger on into April, and even May!

Have a faaabulous week, neighbor! And thanks so much for stopping by!

Aw....thank you :) No, I didn't make it myself, I found this design over at Etsy. I really liked TWO of her templates, but eventually decided on this one. I customized a few things after I uploaded it, however, most of what you see was created by the designer. She makes both Blogger AND WordPress themes.

"I wish I enjoyed the winter, cold and snow as much as you do. I really need to move to Florida or some other place that's tropical because I can't stand being cold. I feel cold just looking at these photos brrrrrrrrrrrr!"

HA! I know, and I think MOST people don't like to feel cold or enjoy winter as much as I do. Most people prefer being warm. You would LOVE the Florida weather!

  19. Hey there Rob! Thank you, buddy :) I had off yesterday, so I decided to upload the new template because I had more time to play around with it. When you upload a new template from an outside source, you have to make sure to copy and save everything (like the widgets), just in case something goes wrong.

"I confess that I don't share your love of winter, but, yes, I do get excited at the first snow fall, Monster blizzards are another story, however, and I am just counting the days until the first buds of spring show up!"

HA! I know, I think MOST people don't share my love of winter. Most people prefer the warmth of spring and summer. However, I think this winter (so far) has been pretty mild.

"I would have, regardless! Any snow is cause for joy, as far as I'm concerned."

HA! Amen, Mark! But I think you and I are in the minority when it comes to winter and snow. Most people prefer warmth and sunshine 24/7.

  21. Aw.....thank you, Debbie! And coming from a professional web designer, that means a lot. I found this template over at Etsy. She designs both Blogger and WordPress themes. " Unlike you, I'm not such a fan of winter. Oh, I like snow okay -- particularly if it falls on Christmas Eve! -- but by Mardi Gras time, I'm ready for Spring!"

HA! Yup, I think most people feel the same as you. I know that I'm in the MAJOR minority when it comes to winter, snow and the cold. OMG...I LOVE them! But like you, I enjoy the change of seasons because if they didn't change, I don't think I'd enjoy winter as much as I do.

It really makes for some beautiful pictures. Thanks so much for the birthday wishes for my daughter. She is having one awesome 30th birthday in Aruba!! I had a bit of a heart attack when she told me she had gone SKY DIVING again...in a foreign country!!! OMG!!! I know I shouldn't freak out...but I do!! Then she sent me all the pictures so I could SEE and experience her falling out of the airplane...WOW. I could never, ever do it. I just couldn't. Enjoy your day my friend! Hope you get some more white stuff! Weather report looks like you will!!

  26. Yes, awesome pics indeed. But I'm feeling sorry for the horsey, out in the rain/snow...I guess they get use to it. :-(

That is some nice looking Starbucks lighting Ron, kind of posh. They are pretty plain and generic, here in Canada, at least the ones I've visited so far.

There is nothing like a good blizzard to stir up the senses, and to conjure up happy winter childhood memories for me. I LOVE blizzards!!! We never have them here in balmy (for Canada) BC, that I DO miss about living on the Prairies. They actually have a place in Sask. (where I was born) called Keniston, that has the distinction of being the blizzard capital of Canada. Do you have something like that in the US? I'm guessing Alaska, right. LOL

I'm actually already in spring-mode as the weather is warming up here already. The spring seems to come earlier every year. NOT a good sign, environmentally, but reality it seems.

Thanks for sharing your latest wonderful photos and yes, I did notice your new presentation. Looks fresh and clean.

I did a bit of blog-cleaning over at My Real Life Reviews last week too, with lighter colors to welcome spring on the way!

Have a great rest of the week, G :-)

  27. Oh, Ron! You are so cute and funny!
I know how much you LOVE winter and snow, and for you, I'm glad it did snow a little.
I'm now a Spring/Fall person (the summers are just too hot for me now that I'm menopausal!). I do have to admit, snowfalls are very pretty, but I hate, hate, hate driving in them. And with my new job, I drive over 300 miles per week! URGH!!!
So, with that, I'll hope we get our blizzards Friday night into Sunday and then have it all cleared off the roads by Monday morning.
You pictures are simply beautiful. You have such a knack for capturing amazing photos. Philly is beautiful through your eyes (lens)!
Have a fantabulous rest of your week!

Yes, I can totally understand that. The thing about living in a city is that all the shoveling and snow clean-up is done by the city, so that's why I think I enjoy it so much. However, if I lived in the suburbs and had to shovel the snow myself, I may feel differently about it - ha!

Have a super week, my friend. And thanks so much for stopping by!

  31. Hey there Geraldine!

"But I'm feeling sorry for the horsey, out in the rain/snow...I guess they get use to it. :-("

Yes, I kinda feel the same way. And not only about being out in the rain/snow, but also that the horses walk in the streets with cars driving past them. But then again, I think they eventually must get used to it.

"That is some nice looking Starbucks lighting Ron, kind of posh."

Yes, it is a rather posh Starbucks, I agree. The thing I noticed about Starbucks that are located in a city (like Philly and New York) is that they are less generic than the suburban stores. And I think that's because of the old, historical buildings in our city that are transformed into other businesses. City Starbucks have a lot of character and charm.

"There is nothing like a good blizzard to stir up the senses, and to conjure up happy winter childhood memories for me. I LOVE blizzards!!!"

I love blizzards too and we're supposedly getting one on Saturday. And I can't wait!!!! And yes, you're right...Alaska would be the closest thing to Keniston in your area.

"I'm actually already in spring-mode as the weather is warming up here already. The spring seems to come earlier every year. NOT a good sign, environmentally, but reality it seems."

OMG...I'm not nearly ready for Spring just yet. I mean we just now, finally, got some winter weather and snow. Here in the northeast, our winters can go well into and through April before Spring shows itself.

Thanks! I decided to change my blog template this month because I realized that it was last year (in January) that I made a change. I like to change things up every year because it keeps things fresh.

"I hope he had a nice warm place to sleep that night and a good din-din, he deserved it."

Yup, they keep the horses in a stable area in the city where they are feed and sleep. And from what I've heard, they take VERY good care of them. And they look it too because the horses I've see look well-fed and happy!

Yes...we have been hit VERY hard here in Philadelphia. It started last night at about 6:30 PM and continued through the night. In fact, it's STILL snowing. And it's VERY, VERY windy. The city looks like a ghost town because there is literally no one on the streets. I may go out later this morning and take some photos.

" The funny thing is...we have nothing here!! It is not even snowing!"

That's UNBELIEVABLE because you usually get hit very hard with snow during the winter.

  39. Funny--Philadelphia was where we landed in September, where I visited more than once, and where we'll go back to next month....and all I think about when it came to "Philadelphia" was the wee fella who laid, and who'll soon again be laying, in the cardiac critical care unit at CHOP.....
BUT--let there be a monumental bit of snow in Philadelphia--and I think of YOU. LOL
I like the joy that I feel when I think of Philadelphia being covered in the white fluffy stuff and you running around like a crazed man trying to catch snowflakes on your tongue. I can even envision you tossing yourself on the ground for a snow angel or two. Those are pretty happy thoughts. :-) And they're thoughts I wanted you to know I was having....of YOU...enjoying life and embracing the moment.
It's one of those things that endear me to you, dearheart.
I just wanted to let you know I was thinking of you today--and smiling......HUGELY. :-D
    Thanks for that!
    *hugs*

Hiya Mel! OMG...you were in PHILADELPHIA in September?!?! And I know exactly where CHOP is. I think it's considered one of the best children's hospitals in the country. I hope all is well with the wee little fella and that everything worked out while you were here in Philly. The next time you're here, please let me know via email and perhaps we can meet. At least for a cup of coffee.

Yes, it snowed here like CRAZY on Friday and Saturday. It was one of the biggest blizzards we've had since I've moved back. And wasn't just the snow, but the WIND. I went outside on Saturday to take some photographs and it felt like I was going to be swept up by the wind and blown away.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Hope all is well with you and that you had a great holiday season. Happy Belated New Year to you!

  43. I feel most sorry for the poor person driving the hansom cab - they looked so miserable in the snow! This was your first snow of the season? Wow! Trying to catch up once again so you'll probably be seeing a number of comments from me in the next little while.
Glad to catch up with you & your sunny nature Ron!

  44. I know, I can't imagine driving that cab all day in the cold, snow and rain. Brrrrrrrrrrr!

Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by and catch up on my posts, Benze.
