Judging from the photo collage above, can you guess which new item I recently purchased that turned out to be a PIECE OF SHIT?

Yes, I'm sure you can.

First, I wanted you all to know that I moved into a new apartment within my current apartment building. I decided that because I didn't move to New York, I needed a change of location to give me a fresh start. My landlady was kind enough to offer me a newly renovated studio apartment (same layout as my other apartment, but on a different floor) with no increase in rent because I've been a tenant here for so many years. I was also given the keys to my new apartment two weeks before my official move-in date so that I could gradually transfer my things, which was awesome because by the time October 1st arrived, I had almost everything moved in.

I also decided that I needed a new bed and mattress. The one I previously owned was getting to look and feel like a bed of nails; therefore I went online several weeks before I moved and searched for a nice bed frame and mattress. And VIOLA...I found the perfect pair at a great price! Oh, and guess what? The bed frame was so easy to assemble, I had it together in 25 minutes. The mattress, which is one of those memory foam mattresses was also easy to unpack and set up. The mattress took a full 24-hours to totally expand to its full 10 inches. And can I just tell you how maaahhvelous it feels to be sleeping on a fresh, new mattress?

I've been extremely happy with both items, which were purchased from the same company.

Here are some photographs of the bed frame and mattress that I found online. Once I get completely set up in my new apartment, I will take my own pictures and share them with you.

Bed  Frame
(I was very attracted to this bed frame because it has a Japanese style - simple, clean and low to the ground)

Mattress
(it's firm, but very comfortable and contour-fitting)

Additionally, I ordered a new computer desk because my previous desk was starting to resemble the desk that Benjamin Franklin owned in 1785. I ordered the desk off the same website, but from a third-party manufacturer. Now, as happy as I was with the bed frame and mattress, I was very disappointed with the desk. And I mean VERY. From the photographs online, I loved the desk because it was so simple. It basically looked liked a portable picnic table, in which all you had to do was flip the legs out and they would snap into place. Extremely easy and minimalistic, requiring no assembling.

Well...on the day the desk arrived, I could tell there was going to be trouble because the box it was shipped in looked as though it had fallen off the truck while going 90 miles per hour - it literally had rips and holes in it. When I got it up to my apartment and opened the box, I immediately saw the damage. There were two HUGE gashes on the wooden desktop. It looked as though the metal legs had been pulled apart from the top, which caused the wood to split. There were also small nicks around the outer edge of the desk. OMG...I was LIVID because I can't stand when people are careless and don't take pride in their job. And that's exactly what this was, carelessness, by someone who didn't give a shit about his/her job.

I thought about returning it, but the desk was so heavy that it would have taken too much effort to repack and ship back. And how could I repack it anyway? The box had been destroyed during delivery.

Eventually, I figured a way to patch the gashes by using a strong masking tape. And fortunately, when I placed my printer and computer monitor on the desktop, it completely covered the damaged areas. The desk was workable, yet I was still very upset by the way it was delivered. And I clearly made myself heard by leaving a scathing review on their website, telling potential buyers NOT to purchase this desk. While there, I noticed several other reviews that mentioned the same thing about the condition of the desk when it was delivered.

I entitled my review : WARNING: THIS DESK IS A PIECE OF SHIT....DO NOT PURCHASE!

Needless to say, the company refused to publish my review. So I sent them an email, saying that I had every intention of publishing a blog post, sharing my HORRIBLE experience so that others wouldn't waste their time and money, and that they should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves for the quality of service they offer.

And do you know what's ironic? Ever since sending them my email, I noticed that the price of the desk has been reduced. Which probably means that they need to get rid of them because no one is purchasing them.

Here are some pictures of how the desk was seductively portrayed...

...that is, until you get it out of the box.

So if anyone is searching for a computer desk and lands on this website and discovers this desk, which at first looks appealing, please...PLEASE take my advice and DO. NOT. PURCHASE.

I bestow upon it my seal of approval...

And have a lovely day!

  1. OMG what appalling service. If it was't such pain to do, I would seriously think about shouting your opinion of the company over the rooftops as well as the internet. Didn't they even offer you a rebate as a gesture? At least the bed is okay!

As for your new apartment, is it higher or lower than your last one? I always imagined the view from your last apartment to be of rooftops.

  2. First of all, I love the bed! It's similar to the one my son bought for his apartment. Those mattresses seem very comfy. But omg on the desk. I would have demanded that they send an empty box for it to be returned. That's ridiculous! At the very least, take photos of the damage and demand some sort of credit.

That's the thing I hate about online shopping; you can't hand pick your item from the stock available. We've had to return a number of damaged or poorly made items back to Amazon. Fortunately, they've never given us any trouble.

    Enjoy your new pad, Ron!

  3. Ron, I completely understand your frustration and anger about people who are careless in their work because I feel the same. I makes me furious when people don't take pride in their jobs. I've ordered things online, but I always feel hesitant because of things like you just went through. Love the new bed, it's so nice! I've seen those kind of mattresses before and always wondered how it felt to sleep on them. Glad to hear it's comfortable. And I'm also happy to hear about your move. Looking forward to seeing more photographs.

And I LOL at your seal of approval. You are so funny, Ron!

  4. Good morning Valerie!

    OMG...I was LIVID!

"Didn't they even offer you a rebate as a gesture?"

No. And I also sent an email to the company who sells and ships their products to tell them how crappy their service was and got NO response.

"As for your new apartment, is it higher or lower than your last one? I always imagined the view from your last apartment to be of rooftops."

Lower. I was in that other apartment for 15 years, can you believe that?!? I'm actually enjoying the view from a lower floor because I can see all the lights in the buildings that surround me. When I was higher up, it was only the tops of the buildings I could see.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fantastic week!

  5. Thank you. I love the bed too. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to have it. And it was VERY reasonably priced. Yes, the mattress is soooooooooooo comfy! I love how it forms to the contours of your body when you move. I like a firm mattress, so it's perfect.

"But omg on the desk. I would have demanded that they send an empty box for it to be returned. That's ridiculous! At the very least, take photos of the damage and demand some sort of credit."

I did take pictures, which I included in my review on their website, but they refused to publish it or respond. I also sent an email to the company who uses them as a third-party seller and they didn't respond as well.

"That's the thing I hate about online shopping; you can't hand pick your item from the stock available. "

I know. And that is why I VERY rarely order anything online. The only reason I ordered these items was because I don't have a car, so I had no way of driving there to pick them up.

Yes, I heard Amazon is amazing with returns/refunds. That's great to hear.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a FAB week!

  6. Ron, Congrats on your move to a new home! Just in time to celebrate your B-day, too!
I think you chose wisely regarding the mattress and frame. I, too, like that minimalist feel, and having a frame so near the floor means you won't have far to topple out (if you ever do, you know!!)
As for the desk, well, the style is nice, and I can see where you'd be seduced into buying it. I mean, apartments aren't exactly known for having a wealth of space, so something that folds up sounds ideal. What a crying shame it arrived looking like it had gone through a wringer! I think I'd have been on the phone arguing -- loudly! -- and forcing them to ship me a replacement. Probably you're a NICER person than I am, ha!!
Have a great week -- we're gearing up for FALL temperatures in a few days and will try to share with you! xo

  7. Hey Candice!

I take my job and the work I do very seriously by always giving 100%. I was raised by my father that way, to be responsible, reliable, and doing your very best. I have no tolerance for anyone who is careless in business.

I normally don't order thing online because of this very reason. I also don't order a lot online because I'm leery about making purchase online using my debit card. But this is one time when I needed to do it because I had no other way to purchase these items because I don't have a car to do it myself.

Yes!,,,,the mattress is sooooooooo comfortable! I used to sleep on a futon, but it was getting so old and lumpy. It was time to get a new one.

I've been taking my time setting up my new apartment because I'm working a lot of hours. Also, I want to do things differently in this apartment - not as many things hanging on the walls, different color schemes, and less clutter on the shelves.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fantabulous week!

  8. Aw.....thank you, Debbie! It feels faaaaaaabulous to be in a new apartment. I was in the previous one for 15 years, so things were starting to get tattered and rundown. I love that this new place has been renovated with appliances, paint, newly polished hardwood floor, and new fixtures. It's on a lower floor, and I really enjoying the new view from my windows.

" I, too, like that minimalist feel, and having a frame so near the floor means you won't have far to topple out (if you ever do, you know!!)"

HA! You're right! I've always been a minimalistic-style person, however, after living in Japan for a summer, I became even more minimalistic and simple.

Yes, I LOVE the desk because not only for its simplicity, but also because it saves space.

"I think I'd have been on the phone arguing -- loudly! -- and forcing them to ship me a replacement. Probably you're a NICER person than I am, ha!!"

No, trust me, I wasn't very nice when I left my review on their website, not was I nice when I contacted them via email. I even tried to contact them via phone, but got NO response. This is one of those times when I had to let it go because I knew nothing was going to happen to correct this situation. HOWEVER, I wasn't going to pass by the opportunity to at leas voice my opinion on my blog - HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Yes, we're supposedly getting some Fall temps this week too (starting on Friday) and thank god because it's been SO HOT and HUMID. I am so ready for cooler temps!

  9. I always love redecorating! It's such fun and makes me feel like I'm making myself over as well. It's unfortunate the desk didn't live up to your expectations. Was it delivered by the company or by a third-party delivery service? If so, you may be able to get some compensation from them. I can tell you emphatically that the desk would NOT be big enough for all the s-----stuff that sits on my current desk! I'm not what you would consider a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination! :-) Looking forward to seeing the apartment when you have everything in place.

  10. "I always love redecorating! It's such fun and makes me feel like I'm making myself over as well. "

Yes, me too, Lisa! And it's been forever since I moved and redecorated (15 years to be exact). So moving into this newly renovated apartment has been such a breath of fresh air, I LOVE it!

"Was it delivered by the company or by a third-party delivery service? If so, you may be able to get some compensation from them."

It was delivered AND sold by the third-party, which is the reason WHY it was delivered in the condition it was. I had the bed and mattress delivered in perfect condition, yet it was the desk that was a shambles. I contacted the third-party company but got NO reply whatsoever. When I went on their website to read reviews by other people who purchased items through them, many of them said the same thing, the items they purchased were delivered in bad condition and that when they tried to contact the company to complain, none of their emails or phone calls were returned.

The desk is actually quite large. It's very wide, so I was able to place my computer, keyboard, mouse pad, and printer/scanner on the top with room to spare.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a great rest of your week!

  11. Ron, I would have been pissed about the condition of the desk too! How careless of them! But I find that so many business today have such poor standards of customer service and integrity. I order quite frequently online and have had similar experiences with items arriving damaged. Amazon is great about returns, which is why I order mostly from them.

LOVE the bed! OMG, I love the whole style. Good choice! Several years ago I purchased a new mattress from Leesa. It was expensive, but so worth it because it's the best mattress I've every owned. It's so comfortable.

Looking forward to seeing more of your new place. I bet it looks fantastic, Ron! X

  12. Hola Denise!

OMG...I was sooooooooooooo pissed! I tried to contact the company via email and phone but got NO response. I read on in the reviews that other people experienced the same shitty customer service from them.

I've never ordered anything from Amazon but have heard similar things, that they were great about returns if you were completely satisfied with your purchase. Honestly, I don't order much online, but this was one of those times when I had to because I had no way of picking up the bed, mattress, and desk. It was only the desk I had problems with because it was through a third-party.

"Several years ago I purchased a new mattress from Leesa. It was expensive, but so worth it because it's the best mattress I've every owned. It's so comfortable."

Yes...I've seen infomercials online about Leesa mattresses. Glad to hear that you're enjoying it because others say the same thing.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a wonderful rest of your week!

  13. Well, at least your approach to the situation was somewhat humorous! That bites, though. I'm surprised the company didn't do the honorable thing and send you a replacement at no charge. Do they not realize the damage and potential lost revenue once unhappy customer can cause?

Congrats on the new apartment, too! Your move sounds a million times easier than ours was. Hope you're getting cooler, autumn-like weather soon!

  14. "That bites, though. I'm surprised the company didn't do the honorable thing and send you a replacement at no charge. Do they not realize the damage and potential lost revenue once unhappy customer can cause?"

Exactly, Mark! I tried contacting them not only by email, but also by phone and got no response. As I was reading some of the reviews on their website, other customers where saying the same thing - damaged goods and when they tried to contact them, they were ignored.

Thanks, I am SO LOVING this new apartment. And even though it's the same layout as my previous apartment, the whole place has been renovated, so it feels completely different. And yes, this move was a very easy because I had two weeks to gradually move into my new place.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. And yes, we're getting cooler temps starting tomorrow. And thank god, because I am sooooooooooooooo over this never-ending summer weather. Bring on Autumn! And then Winter!!!

    Have a fab weekend!

You made me laugh - love that star with the text in it! So sorry you now have to live with that piece of junk - but at least you've found a way of making it usable... And congrats on your new apartment!

  16. HA! I couldn't resist creating that star with the text in conclusion to this post.

" So sorry you now have to live with that piece of junk - but at least you've found a way of making it usable."

Yes, I eventually figured out a way to make it work so that it looked undamaged. I actually love the style of the desk because it's very practical and minimal. It's very different than my previous desk, but I like it.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Hope all is well with your family and that you're enjoying your time away.

    See you when you return!

  17. That's too bad. Poor shipping can ruin an otherwise decent item. I had a similar experience with a dining room table that was all dented in the corners (because it was fiberboard with a veneer, not the solid wood they claimed). I contacted them tot return it and they refunded my money and said if no one came by within two weeks to fetch it, just get rid of it. No one did, so now that feee table is my computer desk with the bashed corners facing the wall.

But hey, the bed looks fantastic! I have a platform bed, too - really love it.

That's AWESOME! At least you were able to keep it and then use it for something else. I did something similar with the damaged desk I ordered. I turned the gashes to face the wall so that I don't see them.

Thank you. Isn't the style of the bed fantastic? And that new mattress is sooooooooo comfortable.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my Libra friend. Hope you had a peaceful and relaxed weekend.

  19. Ron, you're much more understanding and accepting than I would have been. Things like that piss me off so bad that I can't rest until I correct it.Did you try to call them as well as email? I'm curious to know how they responded.

LOVE the bed, it's so nice! And I'm impressed by how you put it together in 25 minutes. I hate doing stuff like that, which is why I give that job to my husband LOL!

Can't wait to see more of your new apartment. I bet it looks amazing!

Hey, how are you enjoying our cold snap? I thought of you several days ago when the temps suddenly dropped into the 50's. Doesn't it feel wonderful after all that nasty heat and humidity at the beginning of the month? XO

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hello there, Elaine!

I know, don't things like this PISS you off? I hate when people do careless work. OMG...it annoys the living hell out of me!$##$!

Yes, I did call them and got NO response whatsoever. I saw on their website (on the customer review page) that MANY other experienced the same thing - they call several times, but got no response.

Isn't the bed FAB? The second I spotted it, I had to buy it because I loved the fame. I haven't bought a new bed or mattress in YEARS, so it was time. I was dreading putting it together, but the instructions were simple. And they supplied me with all the necessary hardware (in the box), which made it very easy. I was so happy when I finished and stood back to look at it.

OMG...I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy about the colder weather. On the day the temps dropped, I walked to work without a jacket because I wanted to feel that wonderful cold air on my skin. And it's about time, right? It finally feels like AUTUMN. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor. Have a fantastic week!

  21. Gosh, Ron, I can't believe this! Where do these idiots get the nerve to stick you with a crappy desk like that? You should contact some consumer affairs outfit and give them a piece of your mind.

I'm sorry this happened, but don't let it spoil the new apartment vibe. You're in a new space and, crummy desk notwithstanding, you're going to welcome all good things into your life!

And I must say that I do love Ron's Certified POS sticker! There are a number of people walking around who should be wearing that gold star as well!

Sorry about the desk grief, buddy, blessings on the new apartment, and take care!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hey there Rob!

"You should contact some consumer affairs outfit and give them a piece of your mind."

You know, you're right about that because even though I contacted the company which I ordered the desk from (both via email and phone) I got no response whatsoever. Truly, they SUCK!

No, I haven't allowed this experience to dampen my enthusiasm and joy for having a NEW APARTMENT because I am soooooooooooo loving it! And I love that it's been renovated because all the fixtures are new. I was in the previous apartment for 15 years, so it was looking very tattered and worn.

"And I must say that I do love Ron's Certified POS sticker!"

HA! I just couldn't resist making that sticker. I found the star pic online, and then added the text. Yeah, I too can think of a number of people who should be wearing it!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Hope you're enjoying a faaaaaaaaaaabulous Autumn in New York!

  23. Ron, your seal of approve made me ROFLMAO! You are too damn funny, dude!

Man, that would have pissed me off as well. I have little tolerance for people who careless about their job. And I also can't stand bad customer service in stores. Some sales people act as though they're doing you a huge favor to wait on you.

Glad that you were able to make due with the damage. Great looking bed! And that mattress DOES look comfortable.

  24. Hiya Matt!

HA! I couldn't resist sharing that seal of approval.

"And I also can't stand bad customer service in stores. Some sales people act as though they're doing you a huge favor to wait on you."

OMG...me too! I freaking hate walking into a store, feeling that the sales people don't give a shit about their jobs. I'm IN the customer service industry and do my best to always give my best, which is why I have no tolerance for poor customer service.

I was grateful that the damage was in a place on the desktop that allowed be to hide it.

The mattress is soooooooooo comfortable. I needed a new mattress so bad because the one I had was so old. And one of the best parts was that is was very inexpensive.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a fantastic weekend!
