It was the great American designer, Halston, who quoted the significance of this iconic garment perfectly:

“Turtlenecks are the most comfortable garment you can wear. They move with the body, and they’re flattering, too, because they accentuate the face and elongate the figure. They make life so easy: you can wear a turtleneck to work and then afterwards throw on a jacket, and it becomes very dressy. You can go anywhere you like.” - Designer, Halston

If you look at the welcome photo collage on the sidebar of my blog, you'll see me wearing a turtleneck. And if you look at the collage I created of myself making faces in the previous post, you will also see me wearing a turtleneck. I would say that in most of the photos of myself, I've shared on this blog, I'm donning a turtleneck.

And do you want to know why?

To hide all the hickeys I always have on my neck.

Bwhahahahahahahaahaha! No, I'm only kidding.

It's because a turtleneck is my favorite thing to wear.

Black-

Also, black is my favorite color of clothing; therefore, my turtlenecks are all black. If you looked in my closet, except for my Levi's blue jeans, you would see nothing but black turtlenecks, dress shirts, dress pants, polo shirts, and T-shirts.

As with my home, my clothing is simple and minimal. I don't like to think about what I want to wear every day. If my clothing is all black, then I don't have to think about what goes with what, I just put it on.

I also like black because it's always appropriate and classic, and it's a color that everyone in the whole world looks great in. Black is a color that doesn't distract from looking at someone directly in the eyes when you're talking to them. Black has a wonderful way of presenting someone.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy seeing other people wearing bright colors and accessories, I just don't care for them on me.

My "black clothing love affair" all started when I worked for Chanel as a makeup artist. We were all required to wear black, so it gradually became my clothing trademark.

Today, I would like to share several photos of both men and women wearing a black turtleneck, so you can see just how attractive I think it looks on all people.

And notice how in each of the photographs, your eyes immediately go to their faces...

Here are several classic celebrities who also had a passion for black turtlenecks...

And now that it's almost Summer, it is time for me to put away all my long sleeve black turtlenecks and bring out the short sleeves. So you see, I can wear turtlenecks all year long!

Hey, look!

Even dogs and cats look phenomenal in a black turtleneck...

Have a stylish rest of your week, y'all!

  1. Oh my gawd Ron, the photo of the dog and cat is so adorable! I just want to kiss their cute little faces!

I forgot you worked for Chanel. How great that must have been. How long where you with them? I love Chanel handbags; not that I could afford one.

Great examples of how attractive people look wearing a black turtleneck. My eyes DID immediately go to their faces.

One of my favorite things to wear is anything "vintage". If I could only wear one style, it would be from the 1950s. Such class! I get my vintage stuff from several consignments shops. I look at the style of today and realize their is none. LOL! And clothes from previous decades used to have a much better quality. Clothes of today self-destruct in a few months.

Wonderful read, Ron! I'm in work very early today, and your post went well with my first cup of coffee of the day! xo

  2. Hola, Denise!

Aren't they the cutest things you've ever seen? I too wanted to kiss their precious little faces! My family had a little dog (Keno) who looked so much like the dog in the photo. He was half poodle/half yorkie. He was adorable. But OMG, what a terror he could be.

Yup, I worked for Chanel for six years, back in the mid to late 90s. Had I know you then, I would have shared my employee discount, which was 65%!!!

Ooooooooooooooooo.....I love the look of vintage! And you are so right, there is no quality in today's clothes. What I can't stand is how the buttons all fall off 10 mins. after you put the clothes on. I still have a few pieces of clothing from when my father was alive and they STILL look like new!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend! Have a grrrrrrrreat day at work!

  3. "To hide all the hickeys I always have on my neck." Cracked me up, Ron! Do hickeys even still exist?!? They last one I had was in high school.

What shared about black is so true. There isn't anyone who doesn't look excellent in black. And yes, it does allow you see the person, without any distraction. That never dawned on me before, but your right!

Wasn't Audrey Hepburn such a classy lady? And loved her whole persona. She was classy and elegant, but also down to earth and REAL.

I have two favorite things to wear. I either like to be casual and comfortable in blue jeans and a T-shirt, or really dressed up in a black tuxedo. When I put on a tuxedo, I FEEL different.

LOVE the dog/cat photo! I think in the fall, I'll try putting my cat in a turtleneck!!!

  4. Ooops,I forgot to ask in my first comment. Speaking of Halston, did you happen to see "Halston" with Ewen McGregor? It came out about two years ago. Excellent series!

    ReplyDelete
  5. YES, I most certainly did. And YES, it was an excellent series! In fact, I watched it TWICE. Ewan McGregor was mind blowing in the role. It was like he embodied Halston's spirit!

  6. Morning, Daniel!

"Do hickeys even still exist?!? They last one I had was in high school."

HA! Me too! Hickeys were big back in the day when I was in high school. If you got a hickey, your classmates looked at you as being soooooo popular. LOL!

Wearing black is very much like writing on a blackboard with chalk. It highlights what/who you're looking at.

I adored Audrey Hepburn. HUGE fan of hers. I loved her voice. When she would speak, I felt so calm and relaxed.

"or really dressed up in a black tuxedo. When I put on a tuxedo, I FEEL different."

OMG, you took the words right out of my mouth. When I wear a tux, I too feel different. It causes me to even stand differently. Nothing like a man in a tuxedo.

Isn't that photo cute. I decided last minute to add that at the end of this post. The cat looks like a little Frenchman! LOL!

Have a terrific rest of your week, my friend. And thanks for stopping by!

  7. "Well, it’s a hard NO from me! Lol, this is the one area where we will have to agree to disagree!!! I can’t stand wearing a turtleneck. You might as well be choking me. That feeling on my neck is pure strangulation."

AGREE! We can't all like the same things. However, one area where you and I are very similar is that I too have any prints in my closet. Solid colors all the way, baby!

"I do think the photos of the men look good and downright sexy"

Yup! That's another area where we agree. LOL! And I also think the women looks sexy in their black turtlenecks as well.

Happy June, dear friend! And thanks so much for stopping by this morning!

  8. Ron, do you remember dickey's? I had so many of them in the 60s. Like you, I love turtlenecks. So with dickey, you could make any outfit look like you were wearing a turtleneck. I used to wear them under a button down blouse. I wonder if they make them anymore.

What I like about a turtleneck is that it hides all the wrinkles in my neck. LOL!! And you're right, it's a classic look. I love each of the four classic celebrities you shared. Didn't you love Lauren Bacalls voice? So deep!

I do wear color, but never yellow, orange, or tan. They don't look good on me. And I wear mainly solids. But I do like a thin pin stripe pattern, in either black or navy blue.

I like what Halston said --- "They move with the body, and they’re flattering, too, because they accentuate the face and elongate the figure. They make life so easy: you can wear a turtleneck to work and then afterwards throw on a jacket, and it becomes very dressy. "

Those men wearing black turtlenecks are soooooooooo handsome. Woot! Woot! Don't you think gray and salt and pepper hair is sexy?

CUTE photo of the pooch and kitty!!!

Have a great week, dear Ron. Summer is on the way! xox

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh Elaine, I most certainly DO remember dickey's!!!! I had them too. They were the coolest things in the 60s. I had a few in different colors, but my fave was black. I Google Dickey and yes, they still do make them and sell them online.

Yes, I loved her voice. So deep and resonant. She was a very sexy lady. I loved watching her on talk shows because she was a typical New Yorker, direct and real. And I loved when she talked about Bogart.

I'm not a fan of those colors either. They wash me out. I'm fair, so I need a contrast next to my face. I also don't look good in pastels.

"Those men wearing black turtlenecks are soooooooooo handsome. Woot! Woot! Don't you think gray and salt and pepper hair is sexy?'

Yesiree! Sexy as hell! I couldn't wait to finally get gray hair. As a kid, I couldn't wait to get some "age" on me. I think both men AND women look sexy as they get older.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend! Yup, summer is on the way. Can you believe it's JUNE?!? What I am not looking forward to is the heat and humidity. UGH!

  10. Ron, it's so ironic you posted about black because my girlfriends and I were talking about how EVERYONE looks good in it because it's so flattering to all body types. I even wear black in the summer, although many people think of it more of a fall/winter color. I do wear a variety of colors, but black is my go-to when I can't decide. Like you said, you can just put it on without having to think about what goes with what.

I love all the photos you posted of both men and women wearing a black turtleneck. ALL are so attractive!

And the cat and dog photos melting my heart. So dang cute they are!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Greetings, Clair!

So true, black compliments all body types, and skin colors. There isn't a single soul that doesn't look great in black! And it's so easy to wear. It's also dressy AND casual.

" I even wear black in the summer, although many people think of it more of a fall/winter color. "

Meeeeeeeee too! It doesn't matter the season, I wear it all the time. I also have to wear it for work.

"And the cat and dog photos melting my heart. So dang cute they are!"

I know, I just want to kiss their cute little faces! LOL!

Always nice to read your comments, my friend. Have a great rest of your week and weekend!

  12. Holy Chanel, Ron, 65%?!?!? And I would have taken you up on it and bought a handbag, and even a wallet. LOL! In your 6 years with them, did you purchase a lot?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Nope, can you believe it, I didn't purchase a single thing in those six years. Chanel doesn't really have much for men. Other than the fragrances, Chanel doesn't really offer much for men. I used to get gratis every year, so I would order all my fragrances at that time.

    ReplyDelete
  14. True, Ron, Chanel merchandise is more for women. I also use a few of their fragrances. (Chance Tendre). Love it.

  15. A black turtleneck is one of my favorite pieces of clothing. I currently own three black turtlenecks. I mean, half of my winter wardrobe is black and gray...But you're absolutely correct about black being timeless. I also like the combination of black and navy blue. That's something I started doing this winter because I thought it looked cool. I'm not sure if it WAS cool...🤣

Please write a book about your life's experiences. I really enjoy all of your stories.

I love the dog and cat dressed in turtlenecks! I might have to look for some for our doggies..

Have a fantastic weekend, my friend! 😘

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ron, you've got another GREAT post -- thank you! While I'm not especially fond of turtlenecks -- somehow, they make me feel like somebody's strangling me! -- I do agree that black is an ideal color, one that draws your eyes to the person instead of their clothes.

Perhaps that's why our symphonic band always performs concerts in black -- head to toe. It's really so the audience can concentrate on hearing the music, rather than looking at individual musicians. Cool, huh?

I can't wear yellows, peach, beige, tan, and yellow-based clothing. I guess I could if I wore it in accessories, but I find I don't like them even there. I gravitate toward cooler hues -- blues, purple, green, and blue-based red. Favorite clothing items have to be my Levi's and my moccasins or sneakers. I'm not a swimsuit person!!

You've found some hunky men in black ... and the ladies look exceptional, too. Have a super weekend (is it HOT enough for you yet??) xx

  17. Hey there, Kari!

"I currently own three black turtlenecks. I mean, half of my winter wardrobe is black and gray..."

You sound just like me! And I'm sure you looked VERY cool in your black/blue combo!

Being that I'm more of a fall/winter person, I like darker shades. Also, because I'm fair, darker shade look best against my skin. If I wear pale (pastel) shades, I look DEAD. LOL!

Isn't that photo of the dog and cat wearing turtlenecks adorable? And yes, your cute doggies would look precious wearing one!

Always great to see you, my friend! Have a grrrrrrrrrreat weekend!

  18. Good morning, Debbie!

I totally understand about how turtlenecks can make some people feel strangled because of the tightness around the neck. I know others who feel the same.

Isn't it amazing how black draws your eyes to "the person" rather than their clothes? That's one of the many reasons why I like black.

"Perhaps that's why our symphonic band always performs concerts in black -- head to toe. It's really so the audience can concentrate on hearing the music, rather than looking at individual musicians. Cool, huh?"

You are sooooooooooooo right! Black is neutral, so it doesn't distract your eyes from seeing (or hearing).

"I gravitate toward cooler hues -- blues, purple, green, and blue-based red. Favorite clothing items have to be my Levi's and my moccasins or sneakers. I'm not a swimsuit person!!"

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! I look best in cool/blue hues as well. When I lived in Florida and wore color, I looked best in colors like grey/blues, and greens that were more coolish side. Also, I don't look good in pale/pastel colors. Don't you love Levi's? They are my favorite brand of jeans!

"You've found some hunky men in black ......."

    Tee- hee!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a superb weekend!

  20. Ron, I do agree with you that black is a great basic color choice and does show most people who wear it to their best advantage. And, yes, my eye was drawn to their eyes!

As for turtlenecks, I have worn and liked them, but those days are more in the past not for any special reason and I still have a few.

My color choices are solid colors, no stripes or prints in my collection (there are a couple of plaid flannels for winter wear). I have nothing black in my collection, except for a black formal dress bought for a wedding years ago when the theme was black & white. Black is just not my choice, and that's OK because we don't all have the same preferences.

Vintage wears well that's for sure and those classic actresses proved that point! That feline had a great hat too!

  21. Hey, D!

"As for turtlenecks, I have worn and liked them, but those days are more in the past not for any special reason and I still have a few."

Yes, I know others who feel as you do, so I understand. But for me, turtlenecks are one of those clothing items that goes from decade to decade; remaining a staple in my style of clothing. Simple, basic, and always appropriate. I also think I look best wearing them.

"Black is just not my choice, and that's OK because we don't all have the same preference."

Yes, I agree, we all have different preferences as to what we like.

I also choose sold colors. Not a fan of patterns.

Ooooo, I too like flannel! Especially during fall and winter months. Flannel is so comfy, cozy and warm.

"Vintage wears well that's for sure and those classic actresses proved that point! "

    A-MEN to that!

Thanks so much for stopping by, D! Hope you're having a FAB weekend! We had a very hot/humid day this weekend, however, it's gotten much cooler today.

  22. i think men look great in turtle neck, black is my favorite color, so black turtle necks.

i don't know if i have a favorite thing to wear anymore, especially since covid, i've become a bum and now that my job doesn't require us to be in suits anymore, jean and a top is what i wear.

having said, the style of dress i like to wear as far as clothes in general is diane keaton's look. i love everything she wears. when i did dress well, suits were my thing. blouses, jewelry, flats and heels. but yeah, suits. pants and dress. and i matched the crap out of everything.

  23. Hellooooooo there, Val!

    So great to see ya!

Yup, I had a feeling you liked black, as well as turtlenecks. You and I are similar in that we like "simple" and "classic."

"anymore, jean and a top is what i wear."

And that's great! I wear that on my days off.

"i like to wear as far as clothes in general is diane keaton's look. i love everything she wears."

OMG! OMG! OMG! Speaking of Diane Keaton, I will be posting about her (and her sense of style) in an upcoming post. I ADORE that woman! Not only is she an incredible actress, but funny, and also has a style all her own!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a faaaaaaabulous week!

  24. Ron, being a Goth lover, like you, BLACK is my favorite color as well. So too, my girlfriend. As said, it's easy, classic, simple, and goes with every occasion. The only thing I don't like about black is that it fades quickly with washing and drying. Especially drying.

Awesome examples you give for how well black looks on everyone. One of my favorite articles of clothing is my black leather jacket. I love that thing!

The pics of the dog and cat are stellar, dude!

  25. Hiya, Matt!

"The only thing I don't like about black is that it fades quickly with washing and drying. Especially drying."

You are soooooooooooo right about that! Yes indeed! I too think it's due primarily from the dryer. I wear black for work, and many of the clothes I wear, I don't dry in dryer. I hang them on hangers and let them air dry. That seems to help with the fading.

"One of my favorite articles of clothing is my black leather jacket. I love that thing!"

OMG, that's so funny because I too have a black leather jacket that I adore! I wish I could wear it in the summer. LOL!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're enjoying a fantabulous week!

  26. Ron, I am sorry to be commenting this late, but I was on a short vacay and just got back this morning.

LOVE this post! I do wear a variety of colors, however, black is my very, very, very favorite! I have several "little black dresses" that are so chic. And I like to dress them up with a simple peal necklace or a vintage pin. Black is such a great color because you can get very creative with it.

After I finish with my comment, I'm going to find a hat and black turtleneck sweater for my cat. ADORABLE photos!! xo

  27. Hello there, Candice!

Oh, not worries my friend. Glad to see ya! And I hope you had a terrific time on your vacay!

" I have several "little black dresses" that are so chic. And I like to dress them up with a simple peal necklace or a vintage pin. Black is such a great color because you can get very creative with it."

YES, to all of that! To me, there is nothing so chic and sexy as a woman wearing a little black dress! And like you said, you can get so creative with black. Dress it up, or dress it down. That's why I loved Chanel, she invented the little black dress!

Aren't those photos so dang cute?

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Happy Wednesday!

  28. It's a cool style to like! Turtlenecks can be dressed up or down, and black is so classic and easy to work with.
I do tend to wear black pants, but can probably count the number of turtlenecks I've owned over the years. Might have one currently that's maybe muted purple and white. And it's actually loose around the neck, which is the only type I'd wear. Ron looks good in black, but he has never liked turtlenecks. He's really a t-shirt/jeans guy.
Personally, I like blouses that are ... hippy? boho? Not sure if there is a specific name but just.... flowy, w/wider sleeves, and long, like past the hips! Tunic maybe?
Had to laugh at 'hickeys'! You took me right back to high school. haha
    Have a great week, Ron!!

  29. Helloooooooooooooo there, Mary!

"Turtlenecks can be dressed up or down, and black is so classic and easy to work with."

Yes, that's how I feel as well. I like easy, so turtlenecks (and black) are ideal for me.

I like black pants as well. Besides my dress pants, I pretty much wear jeans (Levi's). And I even have a pair in black.

"Personally, I like blouses that are ... hippy? boho? Not sure if there is a specific name but just.... flowy, w/wider sleeves, and long, like past the hips! Tunic maybe?"

OMG!!!!!! Meeeeeeeeeeeeee too! And I know exactly what you mean by "boho" I LOVE that style! And knowing you for so many years, I know you must look fantastic in that style!!!!

"Had to laugh at 'hickeys'! You took me right back to high school. haha"
