Why is it that whenever I’m starving and heating up some water to make pasta, it seems like it takes about FIVE HOURS for the water to boil?

Could it be the saying, “A watched pot never boils” is true?

I think it is.

However, there needs to be an attachment to that saying which includes, “….and a unwatched pot always boils waaaay before you’re ready for it to boil.” Because whenever I’m on the computer doing something like responding to comments or composing a blog post; needing extra time, the water seems to boil in less than ONE MINUTE.

Take for instance right now, as I’m writing this post. I am not especially overly hungry so I’m in no hurry for the water boil, yet it seems to be heating up fast, which means I’ll probably be interrupted soon and lose my train of thought by having to go over to the stove and toss in the pasta.

*Note: Yup....I just had to get up and go toss in the pasta.

Which, by the way, will probably cook in all of TWO SECONDS, but that's only because I don't want it to because I need more time on this post.

Yet, had I wanted the pasta to cook fast, it would probably have taken until this coming Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m.

*Note: Let’s just see how long it takes to cook, shall we? Let's count.

One....two....

Okay, it’s done.

See? I told you it would only take two seconds.

So, now I have to conclude this post because I need to hurry up and go eat my pasta before it gets OVERLY-COOKED.

Because I despise overly-cooked pasta.

Nevertheless, I’ve learned some very enlightening from this experience.

Either way, whether I watch the pot or don’t watch the pot….

….boiling water is a royal PAIN. IN. MY. ASS.

Bon appetit!

  1. Hi Ron...every time I take an impression for a patient it takes five minutes for the impression material to set. I always say it is like waiting for water to boil! I hope your dinner was delicious and you had a great weekend. I hope your tooth is better. It is so strange that I got a new patient Friday who had the same exact problem as you. I put him on the same antibiotic but he did not respond as well as you did. I finally sent him to the emergency room this morning where they had to drain the abcess. He said he is doing better but all I could think of was you!!!

  2. I was just thinking about this the other day. I feel like comments on my blog are just like a watched pot.

When I'm really jacked about a post and feel like it should have huge conversation I keep checking back every 15 minutes. And usually there's nothin' for hours.

Then, when I let it sit for most of the day there are 10-20 comments. Like the old pot with water.

    Can't win for losing sometimes.

Think I could get anymore cliches in here? Yeah! There's room for one more. A rolling stone gathers no moss -- maybe if I posted more often I'd have more comments.

  3. Nummmm. :-)

Seriously. I'd do desperate things for REAL pasta, quick boil or slow.

    :-/

The good news is you had sense to walk away from the computer and actually fix it AND EAT it.
The bad news....I rarely do. LOL
Which kinda explains the new pots in the cupboard replacing the old pots which died before their time......given they've been boiled dry a time or two.
Which ain't so good on a pot.
    Just sayin'......

  4. that's the way it works. when i have all the time in the world to get to work, every freaking light is green. when i'm in a rush, i get nothing but red lights and detours. when i want to stop at a light to read, the light turns green. have to trick the universe and pretend you don't want it.

"The good news is you had sense to walk away from the computer and actually fix it AND EAT it."

Yeah, and luckily I caught it right before it got over-cooked. I prefer my pasta a bit on the chewing side (al dente).

"Which kinda explains the new pots in the cupboard replacing the old pots which died before their time......given they've been boiled dry a time or two."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....OMG, I've done the same thing - SEVERAL times! Poor pots.

Always so great seeing ya, dear lady!

    Mucho thanks for stopping by!

Bwhahahahahahahaha....yes! yes! I too use to have that happen when I drove. Isn't that so aggravating??

" have to trick the universe and pretend you don't want it."

Yeah, maybe I need to start doing that when I want some pasta REALLY bad. Trick the universe and pretend I don't want it!

    Thanks for stopping by, girl!

Hope you got all the green lights today!

  11. I think everything around me moves faster while I am on the computer, I have sat down before to either research a family name or to read some of my favorite blogs and all of a sudden it's two hours later, now how did that happen I just sat down, now had I been waiting five minutes to leave to go do something then that feels like two hours.

Yes the watched pot never boils but like you said if you turn your head then it has boiled dry.

  13. Oh Ronnie, that is SO funny, because it's SO true! Anytime I am cooking anything and I STAY inside the kitchen it takes FOREVER. But as soon as I LEAVE the kitchen everything cooks at lightening speed!!

OMG, you said it man! Some nights I'll get on the computer at around 8-9 p.m. and the next thing I know it's 1-2 a.m.!!! I don't think I've ever seen time move as fast when you're on the computer!

So, don't ever try to cook pasta, okay?

  17. But it's not just the pasta, it's the laundry needing to go from the washer to the dryer, or from the dryer-out before it wrinkles...when I am in a hurry laundry takes forever...just like the boiling water...ugh!

I hope you enjoyed your pasta anyway!!!

  18. My cooking knowledge doesn't go very far past Top Ramen and Mac & Cheese (but I can make some mean desserts), but I can attest to your observation. It's amazing how quickly an unattended boiling pot can breach the edge and extinguish the flames of the stove on its way to spilling on to the floor and damaging the wood, allowing for a dangerous concentration of gas to accumulate in the kitchen, just itchin' for a spark to alight the entire house ablaze. ...not that that's ever happened to me. Nope. No sir. Not...me...

  25. Once I was making hard boiled eggs and I got distracted reading blogs. It was only when I smelled this very strange smell that I remembered the eggs. It was a horrible sight. I don't know anyone else who has ever burned hard boiled eggs and damn near melted a stainless steel pot but me.

I cannont read blogs whilst cooking anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Having read through this post and needing to make some hard boiled eggs anyway; I decided to try an experiment...

I "pretended" to compose a new blog post and unbeknownst (or so I assumed) to the pot I watched patiently for two seconds!

It didn't work! Boiling water knew it was being watched therefore took the normal five hours to boil. Which for the record is never really a full boil for me as I live in Colorado and with the altitude...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hee!

So true. And sometimes I totally forget I have water boiling (that's rare; it means I'm not hungry at all, which hardly ever happens). There have been times when the tea kettle has started whistling, and I literally sit there with my head cocked to the side, going, Hmmm! What's that noise? It's the tea kettle I filled TWO SECONDS AGO!

    Bwhahahahahahhahahaha!

No, me neither....after posting this, I've realized I CANNOT cook and blog at the same time.

although it's a totally unrelated subject
    - CAN YOU BELIEVE-
that I've been sending my water bill payment to the WRONG service provider for the past 5 (count 'em f-i-v-e) months?

my water got turned off today for nonpayment. But I had paid - just not the water company.

So, there's a connection to a watched pot somewhere. Or maybe not.

    Please pass me a tylenol.

  33. And how about the last ten seconds of the microwave? You stare at that clock ticking down... it's only ten seconds - do you just pop the door and take your food out? Or grab your cell phone to check messages? No, not enough time. 8..... 7...... 6...... Of course it might not be so bad if I wasn't boiling WATER in the microwave!

  35. Hi there Ronnie,

    How are you,buddy?
Yes,we have all experienced this, and it is TRUE that a watched pot never boils!! They should teach this as a principle when you learn cooking!

Same for me when I make pasta or boil eggs :)
You have to really want that pasta to get through the boiling water test :). Then once they are cooking, its fine. Then Iam sure that the "pasta à la Ronnie" are yummy :)

You have a great week. Iam hanging in there. I got to e mail you soon.
