The quote you see above are the words I hear almost EVERY SINGLE DAY at work.

“Me no like this color…..does this free bag come in different color?”

For those of you who might not be familiar with purchasing cosmetics or fragrances in a department store, we in the cosmetic industry have created a monster.

And that monster is called, A Gift With Purchase.

Sometimes certain companies will offer a free gift with a minimum purchase, in an attempt to persuade a customer to buy something from them.

Often that gift is either a handbag (for females), or a gym bag (for males). They each come in only one color and one style, but somehow certain customers believe they’re entitled to a choice. And most of these certain customers are people who will try to barter; wheeling and dealing with you until they get the price they want, and the color bag they want.

Funny, these are the same certain people who own practically every single convenient store in the city of Philadelphia, and who charge $7.00 for a pack of chewing gum and then won’t allow you to use your debit card unless you purchase something for $10.00 or MORE.

And funny, these are the same certain people who ALWAYS come into my store looking for a DISCOUNT.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of waiting on two delightful certain ladies who were inquiring about a free handbag that came with a fragrance. First of all I have to tell you straight up, that the handbag this company was offering looked like something you would find at a circus, as the prize you’d win for seeing how many balloons you could pop using darts. It was the cheapest and most gaudiest-looking handbag I have ever seen, but you’d swear these ladies where getting a free handbag from The House of Chanel.

And after about 45 minutes of closely inspecting it; outside of scanning it through an MRI machine to see if there were any imperfections, one of the ladies looked up at me and said, “Me no like this color….does it come in blue?”

OMG, I wanted to SCREAM, because the thought of this hideous-looking handbag coming in blue made all the hair on my body want to jump off.

*and no, the photo you see above was not the actual bag

But instead I calming said, “I’m sorry, it only comes in this color.”

Whereupon she said, “Well, me no like this color.”

Whereupon I said, “Well, I don’t know what to tell you, this is the only color it comes in, you don’t have a choice. ”

“But me no like this color, I want blue.”

“It’s a FREE gift, so you get what they give you.”

“But me no like this color, I want blue.”

“Well, outside of taking a blue crayon and coloring this handbag, there is nothing I can do about that.”

“But I want BLUE handbag.”

“Um, it sounds to me like you’re looking for a blue handbag, not a fragrance. So perhaps you should walk over to our handbag department and look at the Coach purses which come in a variety of colors, but I guarantee it won’t be FREE.”

And as they walked away; shuffling their feet, I thought to myself….

AAAAAAHHHHHHH!$#!?*!?@!?

Please pray for me…….it’s Black Friday.

Wishing you a flawless weekend everyone!

  1. Hello Ronnie,
I told you yesterday, I am praying for ya.
All of this because of one freaking word.
    "FREE WITH MINIMUM PURCHASE".
    Its like creating Frankenstein's monster...
Is it written anywhere on your forehead or shirt
    "Lets make a deal".
    No...

OMG; what "balls" you need to have to explain without screaming that the free gift is AS IS.
You need all the courage you can muster.

Iam wishing you lots of strenght during these rough times.
    Take care.

The world is full of thickos...grins. I'm not surprised you felt like screaming. You should send that woman to me, I have a wardrobe full of free blue, pink, yellow, green, red, purple, and black bags in all shapes and sizes, all free gifts from favourite cosmetic counters. They compete around here on size and colour and range from beach bags to make-up bags to evening bags The beach bags all came with matching sun hats. And I hate them all. Over the year the bags are offloaded to various raffles ... other affairs where the winner has no choice Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
By the way, I also like blue....
Great post, as usual. Have a brilliant weekend.

  4. I am a lady in love with simplicity. Because that equals classinees to me. Thus, in general, I do not like free gifts. They are unneeded additional pollution to me.

I like to have fewer but well chosen. Of course I am always touched by attention and well wanting folks.

Huge hugs lovely boy - tackle 'em shoppers!

  5. I once worked in retail at a paint store a long time ago. Gotta be over 30 years ago. And although it's much different than your environment, I do remember the strange and annoying requests by customers. And their demands. I do not envy you at all, Ron. Hang in there.

  7. OMG I can just imagine! I'm thinking maybe they can afford to buy all the convenience stores BECAUSE they wheel and deal and barter everyone else to death and then charge atrocious prices which affords them the opportunity to buy even MORE stores.... Vicious cycle and something people like you and I never can do because CERTAIN people have CERTAIN rights and privileges that WE don't get!

  8. Hi Ron,
I know that feeling having myself worked for a clothing store when I was back in school.

They'd come in looking like a gansta-rappa with gold and bling bling - choose an outfit and declare "You can do ... deeskaunt ... I don't like the color so I want a no deeskaunt" - all the while handing the cashier their Amex.

I say 'for' a clothing store because I was a such a bad salesman, the boss grounded me upstairs in the office to do the accounts - on a leather chair, with computer, internet and telephone ... and oh yes, I almost forgot ... and Cable TV. I was making $5 an hour cash.

  9. I do worry about you this time of year, Ron. Having worked in retail during the "holidays", I feel your pain. You will NEVER make some people happy no matter what you do. Selfish, petty, people who think they are entitled are in abundance and seem to come in mass numbers this time of year.

Please stock up on wine and Marlboro's and you know where to come when you need to VENT!

Thank you. Glad you got a giggle. I think this year I may post a few more in December.

"I felt like yelling at the woman through the blog!! Hey...GO and BUY a blue handbag!!!!

Yes, that exactly what we (sales people) say everytime we get one of these ladies.

I mean for gods sake...it's a FREE bag, just take it and be grateful you got something FREE!!

"Mon Dieu! Such PICKY PICKY people!"

    Yes, thank you!

  28. good morning ronnie--well, it's now saturday after black friday-something i have never participated in!!
...maybe they should call this one sick saturday as everyone who works in retail stayed home being it? i don't know how you do it, my friend---when i was "young", way much more so than i am now--how did i get to be 59? anyway, i worked one xmas season in jcpenney! JC PENNEY the store! it's a terrible store, it was then and it still is. i think the only time i have ever been in there was when i worked there. i also did a stint with the emporium and have no idea if that was a big chain or not but it was a step up from penneys. anyway, i never worked in the fragrance/cosmetic dept because they're special. meaning-trained!
so these people would come in off the bus from mexico and not speak a word of english but ask a million questions about the cheapest thing in the dept. i roved around from dept to dept, the worst job in the world!! i remember following women around from here to there to everywhere - and i was young and they were NOT - they wore me out with walking around looking for crap they weren't going to buy UNLESS................. they're demands could not be meant, , firstly i couldn't understand them, secondly, things are not free, even if it is xmas, third, i wouldn't sell it to them if you paid me!i think i was fired from that job too! :) hahahahahahahaah

i feel for you, my friend--be well and be sick today [i hope...not really sick just "sick"] xoxoxox

The dreaded gift with purchase item. I have worked retail too for years. It's never what anybody really wants but God forbid you don't give it to them. This will also sound awful but it seems the people with the most money who can easily afford to buy a container of the things themselves are the worst. Hang in there with the shopping madness!

  52. What. The. Heck?! Does this person also complain about the grass being green, the sky blue, and the color of your exasperated face just a touch too red as you try to contain the anger slowly building up inside if you? Having to deal with *these* type of people on a daily basis is something I could never do. You, sir, are a Superman for being able to socially interact with people like that!

  53. Hey Herman~

"Does this person also complain about the grass being green, the sky blue, and the color of your exasperated face just a touch too red as you try to contain the anger slowly building up inside if you?"

    Bwhahahahahahhahahaha! Too funny, man!!!!

These are the same people who complain about the price of something, yet if you go to THEIR stores they charge an arm and a leg for a bag of potato chips.

"Having to deal with *these* type of people on a daily basis is something I could never do.'

It TOTALLY tests my patience on a DAILY basis - HA!

    Thanks for stopping by, buddy!
