Thanksgiving evening, I rented one of my all-time favorite films, The Wizard of Oz. I could instantly remember as a child, viewing this spectacular piece of celluloid on television, traditionally the weekend before every Thanksgiving. Isn’t it amazing how sometimes a film, music, and things such as aromas, have the power to instantly transport you back to a strong memory? All the members of my family would gather in the den eating popcorn and drinking coke; being just as excited to watch this film as we had been the year before. The only inconvenient thing about watching it on television, was that you never got the chance to rewind it and view certain scenes again, like you can now with a DVD. So it was even more special, because we only got to see it once a year. And the only pauses you got while viewing this film, were during the commercial breaks, whereupon everyone would RUN to the bathroom for a pee break and then RUN back to the television set, as not to miss a single second.

Watching it again last week, made me feel like a little kid. I was all giddy and excited, anticipating these wonderful characters coming to life. I laid on the floor with my pillows and blanket, all cozy and warm on a cold and gray, rainy evening. It felt WONDERFUL! Today, I would like to highlight a bit of this magical film for you…..

Dorothy singing, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” No one sings it like Judy!

The Kansas tornado that blows Dorothy’s house into the sky.

The evil Miss Gulch riding by on her bicycle/broomstick. This part always scares the shit out of me!

Dorothy in Munchkinland.

Glenda, the Good Witch of the North. Secret: I always wanted BE her, so I could wear that faaaaaabulous dress!

I think I look much better than Billie Burke, don’t you? I’m too sexy for this dress!

The Wicked Witch of the West. She always reminded me of one particular member of my family. Especially her green face and cackling voice!

The Wicked Witch of the East, after being SQUASHED by Dorothy’s house.

Dorothy wearing the infamous Jimmy Choo Ruby Slippers.

Dorothy and her three traveling companions. The Lion (my favorite), the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man.

The great and powerful Oz.

A montage of Dorothy returning home; realizing she had the power to do so all along.
“There’s no place like home….there’s no place like home….”

If you have a chance this holiday season, please watch this beloved film. Not only is it entertaining and fun, but more so, I think it’s the message this story shares that is the real magic. The message that as an adult, I sometimes forget.

Everything I need, when it comes to guidance, knowledge, and true happiness, is always inside.

Right in my own backyard.

P.S. if you have some time this week, please view the short video clip of Judy Garland singing, Over the Rainbow on my sidebar. It will touch your heart.

  1. Hey...this film was on television today. Karin and I wound up watching the whole thing again for the umpteenth time. Great flick!

We were lucky enough to have tickets for Wicked in London during our honeymoon. I can't tell you how much we enjoyed that production. You know when you're watching something so enjoyably perfect that you're crying happy tears? That was us during Wicked. Heh...we're such saps.

  2. Hello Ronnie

    To quote Ronaldo:
"Everything I need, when it comes to guidance, knowledge, and true happiness, is always inside."
    Amen.

We are often too busy,or too distracted to sit down & listen to that little voice of wisdom.

Thank you so much for bringing back an old classic film.
I love the Wizard of Oz!
( I guess that it is like all the stuff you forgot about when you grew up & moved away).

Every bit is special. But some things stick in your memory, like the cackle of the wicked witch, the flying monkies or those gorgeous sparkling ruby shoes.

And it is true what Dorothy says:
" There is no place like home".

Dig that sexy witch up there too; Woo!!

Lots of strenght to you this week, babe
    xo

p.s. You have given me the urge to buy the DVD & listen to the film in English again( and in French too; I have never seen the film in French).

  3. I have a confession to make... I have never seen the film. Okay, so I was a deprived child! Not really, there was no such thing as television then or videos or DVDs and cinema was for adults. By the time I was old enough to go to the cinema I was more interested in smooching in the back row. I've watched the contest for a new Dorothy musical and now that I've read your post, Ron, I'm definitely going to get the DVD. It's not too late to put things right, is it? Hope you have a wonderful week.

  4. Ron, this brings back a lot of memories. As a kid, it was only on TV once a year in February. And you didn't dare miss it or you had to wait another year. And in the early days, if you didn't have a color TV, you missed out on the spectacular changover to color during the show. I was always afraid of that wicked witch. She seemed so real.

  5. I am uber sensitive to smells and tastes... they are my memory! Anais Anais perfume equals pre-teen discos, pop corn and warm slathering butter is high school cheer-leading game nights, root beer my good ol' time in the good ol' USA.

I was almost in tears when I took my first sip of root beer last May. Can't get that over here... but we do have cheap(er) - yet good - champagne;) A gal has to choose, right?!

  6. ...Good Morning Ron! I too love The Wizard Of Oz! Friends of ours went to see the show at the Fox Theatre here in St. Louis - they loved it!

...And might I add, you are rockin' that dress my dear! *giggle* ;o)

...And you forgot one important character in this movie - Toto!

    ...Thanks for the memories!

    ...Blessings... :o)

  7. I can remember my Mum and Dad taking me to the cinema to see this film when I was about six years old. I fell in love with Dorothy's Ruby Slippers and vowed I would own a pair of my own one day. I did get some about 15 years ago but they were so high I couldn't walk in them! I wasn't deterred though I just used to wear them in the house and sit and look at them. :)

    Fabulous film I agree Ron.

  8. I've never watched the movie - but I first read it from cover to cover when I was 12 and remember how much I loved it back then.
It's one of my all time favourites.

Perhaps you've have loved the part where the 'wizard' was dressed as a beautiful and enchanting woman.

Movies do have a powerful effect of taking one back in time. But what happens, when a certain movie can bring their loved ones back one to life ?

"Hey...this film was on television today. Karin and I wound up watching the whole thing again for the umpteenth time. Great flick!"

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!! Isn't it freakin' faaaabulous? And no matter how many times you watch it, it stills touches you deeply.

OMG, can you believe I have never seen the stage show Wicked? It was here in Philly last year, but the tickets sound out so fast. I heard it's WONDERFUL!

I was actually in a children's theater production of The Wizard of Oz back in late 90's. It was an adaptation of the book. I had the time of my life!

"You know when you're watching something so enjoyably perfect that you're crying happy tears? That was us during Wicked. Heh...we're such saps."

Yes, I totally know what you mean, because that's how I get I whenever I view the film.

Thanks for stopping by, buddy! I hope you, Karin, and Tyler had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!

    Enjoy your day!

"We are often too busy,or too distracted to sit down & listen to that little voice of wisdom."

    Right you are, my friend!

It's amazing how many wonderful memories came back to me while watching this film last week. It was like a deja vu! My family so looked forward to watching this film every year. It was such a tradition!

"Every bit is special. But some things stick in your memory, like the cackle of the wicked witch, the flying monkies or those gorgeous sparkling ruby shoes."

OMG, the flying monkeys freaked me out! They were so scary!!!

"Dig that sexy witch up there too; Woo!!"

    Yeah, I'm too sexy, aren't I? bwhahahhahhahahahahah!

Thanks for stopping by, Barb! Hope you had a great weekend!

    Enjoy your Monday!

P.S. Funny you mentioned the film being in a foreign language, because in one of the DVD special features, it told of how MANY languages this movie has been dubbed in. The funniest was watching a clip in Japanese!

  11. Judy singing "Over The Rainbow" is truly magical. For a really unique and touching cover, check out Israel Kamakawiwoʻole.

I always loved how the movie went from B&W to color when she got to OZ. And the flying monkeys always scared the shit out of me. Still do, come to think of it!

  12. Good Morning Valerie~

"I have a confession to make... I have never seen the film. Okay, so I was a deprived child! Not really, there was no such thing as television then or videos or DVDs and cinema was for adults."

Ironic you mentioned that, because on the DVD special features, it told of how this film didn't really become popular until they brought it to television. And for the same reason you shared....cinema was for adults. Therefore, most children saw it 10 years after it came out. I never saw it in the movie theater either.

"By the time I was old enough to go to the cinema I was more interested in smooching in the back row."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! OMG, Valerie...you SLAY ME!!!! You are so funny!

If you do watch this film, I just know you're gonna LOVE it! It's a perfect film to just let go of your imagination and be a child. It's funny, touching, and very enlightening.

ALWAYS so wonderful seeing you, dear lady! Thanks for stopping by!

    Enjoy your Monday!

"As a kid, it was only on TV once a year in February. And you didn't dare miss it or you had to wait another year."

Yes, you and I are almost the same age, so I know you probably watched it around the same time I was watching it.

"And in the early days, if you didn't have a color TV, you missed out on the spectacular changover to color during the show."

That's right! I didn't actually see it in color until the late 60's. The only way you could view technicolor back then, was in a movie theater. I wish I had seen it on a BIG screen. I bet it was fabulous!

Oooooo....yes, the wicked witch was sooooooooooooo scary!

Thanks for stopping by, neighbor! Always great seeing ya!

OMG...Anais Anais!!! One of my close friends back in Florida would ONLY use that fragrance. Whenever I smell it now, I think of her!

"I was almost in tears when I took my first sip of root beer last May. Can't get that over here... but we do have cheap(er) - yet good - champagne;) A gal has to choose, right?!"

You're kidding...no root beer in France? WOW! Ahhhhh....but the champagne must be faaaaaaaaaabulous!

I had a feeling you too loved The Wizard of Oz! I haven't seen the stage show, but hope to the next time the tour comes through Philly. I hear it's really wonderful!

Tee, hee! Thank you! Give me some tulle and some sequin, and I'm a happy camper!

"but I first read it from cover to cover when I was 12 and remember how much I loved it back then.
It's one of my all time favourites."

Yup, me too! And what surprised me was how different the actual book is, compared to the movie. I was in a children's theater production of the Wizard of Oz, based on an adaptation of the book. And my director gave each cast member a copy of the book on opening night.

"Perhaps you've have loved the part where the 'wizard' was dressed as a beautiful and enchanting woman."

"Judy was the absolute best. E-V-E-R. Nuff said."

I've heard that song sung by many people. And although I enjoyed each version, Judy sings it with such an 'innocence' and 'simplicity' that just breaks my heats everytime I hear it.

  27. Thank you for popping by my blog today.

I have always loved this film, and watched it every Christmas as a child. Funny but this post took me right back there too, and you're right. Nobody sings Over The Rainbow, like Judy did - even when she was older. There is a clip of one of her shows, where she is dressed as a hobo, probably after singing 'We're a Couple of Swells'. She sits cross legged on the floor and sings it in very dimmed stage lighting. It makes me cry every time I see it. Absolutely beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh gosh--I didn't wait to listen to the song. I love that one lots. And there aren't a whole lot of movies I can say I've seen. But this one--multiple times. Like you, it was glued to the television and run like crazy during commercials.....and hope you got there first. *laughing*

I used to do one heck of a "Lion", but I'm outta practice. (I can rectify that one!)

WPIML lovingly used to refer to me as 'the little man behind the curtain, pulling levers, making lotsa noise and blowing smoke up people's a**es'.... Sheeeeeeshhhh...think he watched the Wizard a few times? *laughing* I'm sure he meant that with the utmost love and affection! ;-)

Thanks for stirring up my memory banks. Himself will now be treated to the grufffffff and the rawwrrrrr of the Lion. :-/
I'm sure he'll consider himself a very lucky man. *laughinging!!!!!*

  31. Oh my gosh, Ron! I can't remember the last time I saw this but it was on Thanksgiving night or the day after so I stopped what I was doing to watch it. Yes, I could have taped it with my DVR but like you said, watching it live and running to "take care of business" during the commercials just gives it a different feel.

I remember when our family would watch it, every time Miss Gulch came and took Toto away, I would "go to the bathroom" so I could sit on the toilet and cry. Like my family didn't know!

Love all the pics. Thanks for the memory!

  37. oh my dear ronnie, don't hate me but i detest this movie...absolutely detest it! have no idea why except we HAD to watch the frigging thing and the last thing i wanted to do with my family was all sit in the family/tv room and watch this movie with all the weirdos in my family...i come from this very bad place when it comes to that and so it colors the movie for me even if it's black and white half the time...and those little people freaked me out, the flying monkies[i was very impressionable at 10] as did that witch scene you don't like but the guy behind the curtain was very cool, i remember thinking that was absolutely falling on the floor hysterical, for some unknown reason...now that's what i say to my husband when he's doing something strange...pay no attention to...
Soooo that's about it for my review my dear but i am so happy that you had such a lovely holiday night, nothing like a good old movie, popcorn, coke or chocolate to make the day better and better and i bet you sang your big old heart out with the song too ;)

  47. I have always been a little terrified of the movie 'The Wizard of Oz.' However, I LOVE the way Judy Garland sings 'Over the Rainbow'.

  49. HI Meleah~

"I have always been a little terrified of the movie 'The Wizard of Oz.'"

Yeah, their are some SCARY parts to this movie, I agree. Like Miss Gulch/Wicked Witch of the West. It always scared the shit out of me when she went riding past the window on a bicyle, then turned into the witch on a broomstick!!!!!

But don't ya just LOVE the way Judy sings that song. It's pure perfection.

Thanks for stopping by, my wonderful friend!

Hope you had a great day!

  53. I always enjoyed this film too Ron, the comedy, drama, and lessons mixed within this one is so amazing.

Next time I see it I can say that I will not see Glenda quite the same.

  54. The Wizard of Oz was on t.v. a couple days ago. I think it might have run for a couple days. We watched a good bit of it the one night but I guess I didn't feel up to staying with it the whole time because of course I watched it every year as a kid but also my daughter LOVED it when she was little so it played over and over and over for quite awhile since we got her the video tape many years ago.
    It is a wonderful movie!

I happened to notice Nitebyrd made mention of that Hawaiian guy... my husband adores his music and has a cd that is very nice with the 'Over the Rainbow' song on it.
And Anais Anais... I have a bottle and have been wearing it lately. For while it smelled odd on me so I didn't use it but since our bodies change I tried it again and it's okay now. Or maybe I do stink and just can't tell. LOL
Saw 'Wicked' in Philly and it was fabulous.

Nice post, Ron! The Wizard is such a classic. And there really is no place like home!

"I always enjoyed this film too Ron, the comedy, drama, and lessons mixed within this one is so amazing."

That's it, my friend. This film is such a wonderful blend of humor and insightfulness. And I think the insight is realized later, when become adults. We SEE the lessons.

"Next time I see it I can say that I will not see Glenda quite the same."

    Bwhahahahahahahahahaha! Toooo funny!

I'm too sexy for that dress!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy! Always great seeing ya!

Hope you had a wonderful day!

    X to you and Cindy!

  56. Hey Crystal Chick~

No kidding, it was on TV a couple of days ago?!?!?

I guess it was because of the Thanksgiving holiday. They always seem to run it around that time of the year.

I rented the DVD with all the special behind-the-scenes features at the end, and it was so wonderful to see HOW they made that movie and all the trouble they had. It totally blew me away to hear that "talkie films" had only been out for 10 years before it was made, and that technicolor was totally new to movies.

It IS a wonderful film, isn't it?

Yes, I've seen/heard that Hawaiian guy sing on You Tube and he's faaaaaabulous!!! I love his energy!

"And Anais Anais... I have a bottle and have been wearing it lately. For while it smelled odd on me so I didn't use it but since our bodies change I tried it again and it's okay now. Or maybe I do stink and just can't tell."

I love the smell of Anais Anais. We use to carry it in my store, however they took it out last year. It still has a very strong following.

Yes, I know what you mean about using a fragance for years and then going back to it again, and smelling odd. I've had the same thing happen to me with a fragrance I use to use, and then smelling again YEARS later and thinking, "Did I REALLY wear this back then???" I think not only do our bodies change, but also our sense of smell.

I remember "Wicked" playing at the Academy of Music a few years ago, but never saw it. A friend of mine ushers there and said it was SPECTACULAR! Oh well, maybe the next time it comes to Philly, I'll get tickets.

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor! I ALWAYS enjoy our chats!

Hope you had a super day, M!

  59. Absolutely, Judy sings that song to pure perfection. But, yeah, flying monkeys, angry little people, and melting witches have always terrified me!!

  63. I can't believe there are plans to remake the W of O. As if the original didn't make enough money for MGM already. Need to set Toto on 'em.

  64. Hi Nick

"I can't believe there are plans to remake the W of O. As if the original didn't make enough money for MGM already."

Yes, I know, can you believe it??? And not only the money, but also because how can they remake a movie that is already perfection?

You're right...."Need to set Toto on 'em."

    HA!

Thanks for stopping by, Nick! Always great seeing you!

  65. ah, i remember seeing this on the tv while i was a child.
i remembered their journey the most,
where they 4 of them would walk n sing along the way.
the rest was pretty much a blurred.
the song you placeed on the banner however,
    was absolutely beautiful!
