I was originally going on this trip with a dear friend of mine, who two days before we planned to go, fell sick with a very bad cold so she naturally had to decline.

Therefore, I went by myself.

Normally I travel into NYC by train, but I wanted to experience something different, so I took the Megabus.

All in all it was a very pleasant journey, other than the bus was 45 min. late departing Manhattan, and that the passenger seats were designed for people who have the body shape of a #2 pencil.

I’m 5’ 7” and weight 140 lbs., so my seat was doable. However, for someone who might be larger I think it’s a bit uncomfortable.

Take for instance the gentleman who sat next to me on the outside seat, returning to Philly.

He was about 6’ 1” and built like a football quarterback. It was heartbreaking to watch him try and contain his burly frame into one of the seats. His poor arms and legs were smushed together until he looked like a large rolled up Sunday edition of the New York Times being crammed into a tiny mailbox.

About 10 min. into our departure he fell asleep, and this is when it got to be uncomfortable for ME. As his body started to relax his legs began to spread apart; moving over and pressing against mine. Then, as his arms began to relax his left elbow began creeping over into my seat; landing on my stomach. Lastly, as his head began to relax it tilted over ONTO my right shoulder.

At this point the guy was practically lying on top of me, and we hadn’t even been on a first date!

If anyone had walked by and seen us, they would have naturally assumed we were partners cuddling in our seats, while returning from our honeymoon in The Big Apple.

I felt like saying, “Excuse me sir, but I don’t even know your mother’s maiden name yet, so GET THE HELL OFF ME!”

However, he was as cute as a teddy bear sleeping, so I didn’t want to disturb him.

Besides, who am I to deny myself a cheap yet totally innocent thrill?

Another thing that was amusing on the Megabus, was using the bathroom.

I beg you all to try to stand and urinate while a bus is moving. Let’s just say that I got it everywhere except INTO the toilet. I now realize that the trick to using the bathroom on a bus is while it’s traveling on a straight road, not while it’s SHARPLY turning down an off ramp. By the time I finished, it looked as though it had rained BUCKETS in the bathroom.

Bus traveling tip: Don’t drink coffee at least 48 hours before riding a two-hour bus trip. And if by chance you have to go….HOLD. IT. IN.

Here are some photos of magnificent Times Square and Broadway.....

A view down into Times Square, the heart of Manhattan. There is so much energy there, it's like experiencing sensory overload. Everything is bright, loud, and electrifying!

Humongous, colorful billboards line the street; advertising current Broadway shows.

Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch in A Little Night Music. Sean Hayes in Promises, Promises.

Sardi's, the infamous hangout for theater people. Actors and audience members are seen here both before and after performances. Sardi's is where you'll find caricature portraits of actors scattered on the walls.

The Broadhurst Theater. Al Pacino in The Merchant of Venice.

The Majestic Theater. The Phantom of the Opera.

The Lunt-Fontanne Theater. Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth in The Addams Family.

"There's no business like show business."

*Stay tuned on Friday, when I will conclude with a shopping trip down 5th Avenue, and other various photos of NYC.

  1. I hate it when there's not enought room on a bus or a plane, especially if you get someone larger in the next seat.

Love your photos of all the theatres, did you see a show?

  2. Heehee I enjoyed reading about the Megabus ride. Fancy having an incredible hulk sitting next to you. Honestly, some people have all the luck. However I do sympathise with his problem over the inadequate seating design. Love your pictures... forgot to tell you before that your camera is the same as mine, apart from the colour. Great aren't they? I've just finished writing my piece on New York although it's not a patch on yours. Have a brilliant week, hugs from me.

k....I just remembered you made a piddle seat....and wallpaper....

  4. Your *friendly* encounter on the bus trip reminded me of the movie Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. LOL The airline scene when John Candy's character starts getting comfy and takes his socks off and waves one right in Steve Martin's character's face. OMG, their whole journey together was hysterical. Atleast you only had one return bus trip. haha

My girlfriend got her daughter tickets to see 'Phantom'. They just went and LOVED IT!!!

I didn't know 'The Addams Family' was on Broadway. I adored the movies with Angelica Huston.

Glad you had fun and got to try out your new camera!
Guess you can get some snow pictures this week, huh?!

  5. Thank you for the up close and personal view of NYC as I have never been there. Your description of the ride with the guy next to (on top of ) you cracked me up! Did you find out his mother's maiden name before the ride was over?!

  6. As a person who does not have the correct parts to comfortably pee standing up...I vow to never, ever ride the Megabus. Nice shots of NYC - looks like a wonderful day!

  7. Good Morning Akelamalu~

Is it me, or are plane, train, and bus seats getting smaller?

OMG, the seats on this bus were soooooo narrow!

No, I didn't have time to take in a show while in NYC. However after seeing what's playing on Broadway, I would love to go back and see one. A Little Night Music would be on my top list, but it's closing this month - drats!

Thanks for stopping by, m'dear! Glad you enjoyed the photos!

    Have a wonderful week!

  8. Hi Ronnie,

Did I see right or did my eyes see a "$ 1.00 buck price? No... We took Greyhound going to transfer in NYC but, the darn thing was almost 5 hrs late with no explanation, no excuses.

Well, I guess 2 hours kind of broke up a budding relationship there! Ha!! That would be like Laurel & Hardy!! That close for comfort, huh?

I loved the peek on Broadway!! You must have been so excited to be there :) When you lived in the big apple, where were your fav theater haunts? I still remembered the post where you "bumped into Al Pacino :))

Big hugs to my friend xoxox

tee, hee! Yeah, that was the best part of my trip! *wink*

The seats on this bus were incredibly narrow.

OMG, you have a Nikon Coolpix camera too? How faaaaaaaaaabulous! Are't they great? Actually, mine is burgundy. I used the photo of the black one on my blog post because it's the only photo that showed the different angles of the camera. I've yet to try all the various features that come with the camera. There's a lot!

    *jumping up and down*

I can't WAIT to read you story on New York! I'll be waiting with baited breath!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady! Always fab to see you!

    Have a brilliant week too!

Yes! Yes! Yes! OMG, I totally forgot about that movie!

    Bwhahahahhahaahahahhahaha! HILARIOUS!!!!!

I saw Phantom while still living in Florida, however seeing it on Broadway had to have been AWESOME! Whenever they do a tour of a show, they have to downsize the sets (in order for it to accommodate the various theater sizes), so you're really not seeing the show as it's intended.

I had no idea 'The Addams Family' was on Broadway either. So, when I saw the theater, I got very excited!! OMG, to see Nathan Lane and Bebe on Broadway would be faaaaaaaaabulous! I heard the show is closing soon, though.

Yup, I'll be taking some photos of the SNOW we're getting this week. And I heard we're suppose to get A LOT!

Thank you for stopping by, M! Always a delight to chat with ya!

    Have a great week, neighbor!

Awww...you're so welcome! I bet you would really enjoy visiting NYC. There is such an amazing creative energy there that fills you with so much inspiration. There is so much to write about, you could write about it for years!

"Did you find out his mother's maiden name before the ride was over?!"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! No, unfortunately he slept through the entire trip. Then when it was time to get off at my stop, I finally had to disturb him, by CLIMBING over him - HA!

Always so great to see you, Suzi! Much thanks for stopping by!

  14. Bonjour Barbara~

"Did I see right or did my eyes see a "$ 1.00 buck price?"

Yes, that's one of the great things about Megabus. If you book your trip early enough, it can cost as little as a buck, one way. It also depends on the time of the day you travel. Unfortunately, I didn't book my trip until the day before, so I had to pay $11.00. But that's still not bad. The ticket cost me $22.00 round trip. The train is MUCH more expensive.

"Well, I guess 2 hours kind of broke up a budding relationship there! Ha!! That would be like Laurel & Hardy!! That close for comfort, huh?"

HAHAHHHAHAHAHA! The whole time this was happening to me, I kept trying to remember every single detail because I knew I was going to have to BLOG about it - HA!

OMG, seeing Broadway again was so much fun! I was soooo excited! There's a famous theater restaurant in NYC called, 'Joe Allen's.' While still living still in NYC, that was a great hang out.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend! Wishing you a wonderful week!

I was just thinking if you had to CLIMB over the guy to get off the bus, maybe you should have done a little impromptu lap dance and gotten a big enough tip to pay for your next trip? LOL I'm just saying!

  27. Fabulous Pictures Ron and 22 bucks for the trip is good unless you have to pee that is, heck even if you sat down you had better have a seat belt or run the risk of slipping off the seat, not sure I'd chance it anyways Ha Ha

Man I can just imagine having the football player sized guy falling asleep on you, just be proud he didn't have any bad dreams or romantic ones before you found out the Mom's maiden name, there are limits you know, you have to go on the first date first before you get all felt up.

  31. I've never taken the Megabus. Or very much Public Transportation for that matter - because I would REALLY *freak out* like - stop the bus kind of freak out, if some stranger was sleeping all up on me like that!

Your photos are FABULOUS! I'm assuming you took them with your shiny new camera?

    ReplyDelete
  32. You had me laughing out loud over your bathroom story! First off, I've never seen a bathroom on a bus. Second, I agree with Crystal Chick - I was reminded of the same scene in Planes, Trains & Automobiles.

    Looks like a great trip!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Great post, Ron. I took the Megabus to Philly one time and it worked out pretty well. You do have to be careful in the bathroom though. I was using the facilities on a Greyhound one time when we hit a serious bump. For a second there I thought I was going to go out the window holding on to a certain part of my anatomy. What a way to go...literally.

  34. i haven't been to NYC since my senior trip and they wouldn't let us do anything but go to the statue of liberty.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Public transportation can be VERY interesting. I'm not a huge 'bus person' when it comes to inside city traveling, I much prefer subways and trains. However, buses are okay if you're traveling a long distance.

*unless someone is SLEEPING on you*

Awwww...thanks, girl. Yes, I took these photos (except for the Megabus photo). And I'm LOVIN' it!

This was the first time I had taking Megabus, but I've taken a Greyhound before and it worked out okay too. I think with any transportation mode, you're bound to have times when it's running late, so honestly, it was a very good experience that I would do again. And besides, it's soooo inexpensive!

"on a Greyhound one time when we hit a serious bump. For a second there I thought I was going to go out the window holding on to a certain part of my anatomy. What a way to go...literally."

"of course, there was the option of climbing to the top of the statue of liberty by taking the 300 steps.

um, have you met me? no thanks."

HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA! Yes, I agree! Isn't climbing The Statue of Liberty's 300 steps the SCARIEST experience? And OMG....once you start climbing....there's NO turning back!!!!! And if you climb it on a windy day (which I did) it SHAKES!!!

I had the BEST time in NYC last week, and I can't wait to go back!

  49. I'm sure your bus companion doesn't realize that he's sort of famous now. Just a little bit funny. So would you recommend traveling into the city by train? I like all of your photos of the theaters--certainly you must have attended a performance or two--what did you see? Inquiring minds WANT to know!!

  50. Hey Diane~

"I'm sure your bus companion doesn't realize that he's sort of famous now."

Tee, hee! Aren't I wicked talking about him on my blog?!?!? Actually, he was so sweet lying there sleeping like a teddy bear - HA!

I would take either the train or bus into NYC again. The train is faster, but the bus is way cheaper and was actually a nice experience.

No, I didn't see any shows while there last week because I really didn't know what was on Broadway. Next time I may!

    Thanks for stopping by, Diane!

    X to you and Cristybella!
