Okay, where do I begin?

First, let me say that my title photo is the perfect image to express how I truly see NYC.

It’s a city with BIG balls. Which is why I love it so.

Second, my legs are still killing me because I walked 41 blocks, two times. That’s 82 blocks! And thank god it was blistery cold because it kept me moving. I stopped once to eat lunch, and another time to grab a cup of coffee and a muffin. Other than that, I walked around like a pinball on speed.

Tuesday night when I got home, I felt like I had just participated in a triathlon while running through mid and upper Manhattan. My legs felt like stone, my feet burned, and I was physically exhausted.

However…..

Anytime I spend the day in The Big Apple, I come back feeling charged with bolts of creative electricity. The second my shoes hit the pavement, it’s as if something in the ground fills me with a euphoric energy.

And no matter how much time goes by without returning, perhaps even as long as a year, whenever I arrive it’s like I never left. I always feel at home, moving and grooving with its thriving pulse.

It is a tremendously populated city that moves at a unison pace. But trust me, once you’re there, the pace becomes delightfully contagious. Because it pulls you in and gives you energy.

I also find true New Yorkers to be friendly, approachable, and very helpful.

I’ve decided to share selected photos and stories of my trip, over a period of three posts. I took MANY pictures. So many, I had to change the batteries!

I didn't get down to Greenwich Village to visit The Leather Man like I had planned (tee, hee). The next time I go back, I‘ll spend the day in the west Village. Manhattan Island is massive, so it’s hard to see everything in eight hours.

Today, I would like to share a few photos of where my love affair with this city began. Here is where I lived, four out of the five years I resided there. It is located on 65th Street, between Madison and 5th Avenues. We only paid $280.00 a month back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. I don’t even want to THINK about what it’s going for now.

Most of you will recall a post I shared last year about how I use to sometimes throw my cats' poop out the window; landing in the tenants' balcony below my apartment.

Remember that post?

Well, THIS is the apartment I did that in.....

My partner and I lived here together. That was so long ago, yet seeing this place again brought back so many vivid memories. I actually got a little emotional standing here; remembering. It felt very therapeutic.

The apartment building didn’t always have the green shrubs in front. That’s new, and I really like the addition. I think the building has since turned condo or co-op.

Also, the bottom street-level apartment (to the left) was not always an apartment. It use to be a tailor shop. How things change!

And before walking away, I was curious to see if any of the present tenants where throwing cat feces out their windows.

So, I looked down at the pavement….

Holy cat poop, Batman!

Have a super-pooper weekend everyone!

X

*Stay tuned on Monday, when I will share my traveling experience on the Mega Bus, and various images of exciting locations throughout NYC.

  1. haha! you had me laughing real hard imagining you n the cat poop. XD how many places have you lived in? it feels so alienated to me. i love changes, n love the varieties that i get by living in my own house, my parents' house, my sister's house, etc. but i really can't imagine what is it like to rent houses, especially in different cities! which probably is the reason it sounded so alluring. hehe.

  2. Greetings Levian~

Always so nice to see you!

"you had me laughing real hard imagining you n the cat poop."

    Tee, hee...aren't I wicked?

I actually threw it out the window!

Oh, you would LOVE NYC! It's vibrant! It's invigorating ! It's alive, with a wonderful creative energy.

NYC could almost be compared to Tokyo, Japan. Populated and fast-moving.

Here in the States, we either own a home or rent one. I choose to rent because I enjoy the flexibility of it. I love change too, and living in an apartment for me, makes it easier if I want to make a change.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Levian! Always enjoyed!

Hope you have a wonderful day!

  3. What a laugh... I wonder why I never tried throwing cat poop out of my apartment window. Oooh Ron, I remember my feelings the first time I saw New York. To say I was in awe would be an understatement. I recall looking up at the tall buildings and wondering why I didn't feel claustrophobic. There was an excitement about the place.... Oooh you've got me going now... I shall have to do a write up of my visits. Have a fab weekend, my friend.

  4. what's up ron. thanks for sharing your story and those pics. i LOVE NY. it really is the greatest city in the world to me. there is so much to see, so many cultures and so much energy and ya gotta love the crazy people. we'll have to meet up in the city as well to walk around when it gets warmer with meleah and kathy.

  5. 82 blocks....yikes--that's one heck of a jaunt. Lemme see....where I come from there's roughly 10 blocks to a mile. I'm gonna assume, since NYC does everything BIG-- HOLY COW!

    Yup--one heck of a jaunt!

I love the photos! The first one is just too cool. And I was scoping out the screaming man architecture on the building next to where you used to reside. (Undoubtedly he saw the kitty pooh...LOL)

No doubt a few of those emotional moments happened. If it gets that energized and that intense just hitting the sidewalk--of course it's all energized. I hope they were good memories and heart warming emotions.
I know that my visits to old stomping grounds bring a whole plethora of emotions--but the end result is always good cuz it's another part of what helped bring me to here.

I'll look forward to more photos of the Big City.
I won't ask if you're enjoying the camera. *laughing* If you're needing to recharge during the outting--it's a good sign you are!

(gotta love the 'I can delete what I don't wanna keep' theory....this from a woman who has the theory and not the actions that back it up! LOLOL)

  6. like a pinball on speed - what a crazy image, love it! Isn't it wonderful to have a place that fosters creativity? Mine is our little slice of heaven on the river. BTW, those are some big balls...and I know a few people that I swear have them the size of those things...not that I've ever seen them, but oh the attitudes! Glad you had a therapeutic walk...sometimes even when we've had closure, revisiting places and reliving the memories helps us see them in a different light. Enjoyed your post and I look forward to visiting more of NYC with you on Monday.

  7. ...hee,hee,hee...I got a visual when you said "movin' and groovin'" of Jack on "Will & Grace" dancin' down the street to the song, "Shake Your Groove Thing"... You would be the perfect Poster Child for the City of New York! Perfect! ;o)

...I can't even imagine the electricity that would flow thru one's soul as you're walking down the streets of that city! It has to be awe-inspiring to say the least!

...So glad you had a good time and thanks for the tour - here's lookin' forward to the rest of it!

...Have a fabu' weekend my friend!

  10. Hi Ronnie!
You're BAAACK! Its so great to see ya :)
I can just imagine that you were in "heaven" to be back to NYC; Man... 82 blocks of foot work! OMG; just wind you up and watch him go!!
Even the Energizer bunny can't keep up with you :)

And look at those pics! Very well done! You let us see your former digs. Thanks for the peek :)

I know that we are talking about missing a city( and still pretty much accesable from Philly on the road). But, your reaction as something akin to my own when I set foot on N American soil.

Its pure pleasure each time I set foot. Iam smelling the food, enjoying the people, openess and informal feeling.
I miss the country at times...

Thanks for sharing and big hugs xoxo

P.S I'll pass on the next pic of NYC cat poo!

  11. I love your (err, I mean NY's) big red balls!
Wow, what a workout, but soooo exhilarating. How wonderful you were able to get away for the day.
It was neat to see where you used to live. $280 is probably the cost of a parking ticket there now. LOL
Looking forward to more photos and hearing about the rest of your trip.

p.s. Don't you just love the snow today!!? I am enjoying it, but am glad we didn't get alot as I'm jonesing for a green tea latte and the roads would be too icky to go out if we had gotten any more.

  13. Good Morning Valerie~

"What a laugh... I wonder why I never tried throwing cat poop out of my apartment window."

Oh, you MUST try it! It's so FREEING and INVIGORATING!

*just make sure you it doesn't land on the apartment balcony below you*

    HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAA!

Isn't visiting NYC for the first time, INCREDIBLE? And you're right, 'in awe' would be an understatement. Everytime I visit, I feel just as excited as I was the first time.

" I recall looking up at the tall buildings and wondering why I didn't feel claustrophobic. There was an excitement about the place.... "

I know exactly what you mean because you would think that you'd feel terribly clausterphobic, But you don't, do you? I truly think it's because the 'energy' there is so open, so you feel free to move about openly.

Knowing your energetic and creative personality, I bet you just threw yourself into it and got in the swing of things.

YES, please do write about your visits. I would LOVED to read about them!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady!

    Have a fab weekend too!

  14. Hey V!

OMG, I was soooo thinking of YOU while walking through the city; snapping photos! I even got a picture of Bryant Park (which I may share), and I remembered you sharing a photo of the park in one of your posts. I had never been there before, so it was so cool seeing it with an ice skating rink in the middle.

"i LOVE NY. it really is the greatest city in the world to me."

I have to agree with you a 100 % on that, girl! And for ALL the reasons you mentioned.

    I heart NYC!!!

Yes, yes....I would love to go there with you, Meleah, and Kathy. It's not far from us at all, so we could do a day trip in the Spring perhaps.

Thank you for stopping by! Have a flawless weekend!

OMG, I didn't even think to break it down like that, but you're right!

My legs and feet were KILLING me! My shins STILL hurt!

" And I was scoping out the screaming man architecture on the building next to where you used to reside. (Undoubtedly he saw the kitty pooh...LOL)"

Bwhahahahahahahhahaa! Yup, undoubtedly! Doesn't he look pissed?

Yes, all the memories I was feeling while standing there were good ones. It was like therapy for my soul.

" the end result is always good cuz it's another part of what helped bring me to here."

That's exactly how it felt, too! Gratitude for where it has brought me today.

I'm LOVIN' this new camera! It's easy and so quick! I'll be sharing more photos of various places again next week. I decided to break it down into 'areas.'

Oh, and the delete feature is awesome on a digital camera, isn't it? If you don't like what you shot, you can just re-snap it!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, dear lady!

    Have a glorious weekend!

Bwhahahahahahahahahahaha! Yeah, I know a few people like that too!

Yes, it is wonderful to have place that fosters creativity. And NYC does that for me. I also get that from spending time in nature too. It's odd how I enjoy both city energy and country energy. I love them both, for different reasons.

"Glad you had a therapeutic walk...sometimes even when we've had closure, revisiting places and reliving the memories helps us see them in a different light."

Thank you, yes, I agree. Sometimes closure comes in waves, and I think seeing this place again allowed me to celebrate what was, and also what is now.

Can't wait to share more photos on Monday!

Always so great to see ya, Suzi! Thank you for stopping by today!

I think you're right....I would be the perfect Poster Child for the City of New York! Even though I wasn't born there, I feel it in my soul.

"...I can't even imagine the electricity that would flow thru one's soul as you're walking down the streets of that city! It has to be awe-inspiring to say the least!"

OMG, you would LOVE it! It's not a place that everyone could live, but it's definitely a place where one could go and receive inspiration every once in a while, to recharge.

  25. This post makes me homesick! Radio City! Don't you just love it there - NYC, I mean.

My cousin lived in The Dakota back in the '80's, a converted music studio. It was $1,500 a month back then and the place was the size of a closet! But soooooooo cool! Your old place is probably going for a million now.

Love those big, red balls! ;) Better than blue, right? Can't wait for more on your trip!

  26. Good Morning Nitebyrd~

"This post makes me homesick! Radio City! Don't you just love it there - NYC, I mean."

You said it! I just LOVE it there. I have a friend who is a flight attendant for Virgin Airways, who flies all over the world, yet she says that NYC will always be her favorite city!

OMG...The DAKOTA!!!! Yes, I remember that building! Didn't John Lennon live there? And if it was 1,500.00 a month back then, it has to be close to 3,500.00 now. The rent in NYC is unbelievable.

Aren't the red balls faaaaaaabulous? Yes, so much better than BLUE - HA!

Thanks for stopping by, Sis! Always enjoyed!

    Have an awesome weekend!

  27. New York sounds like a great city to visit, or even live when you're young. Now days I only like to visit cities, and live in beautiful, slow paced surroundings, having spent most of my younger life working and socializing in the centre of London. I wouldn't have missed that for anything!

Throwing cat poop out of your window? IO can just imagine that :D We have to be so careful about things like that here. People have been known to poison cats for pooping in their gardens - can you believe that?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Greetings Babs~

"Now days I only like to visit cities, and live in beautiful, slow paced surroundings, having spent most of my younger life working and socializing in the centre of London."

Yes, and I can SO understand your feelings. Cities are not for everyone, when it comes to actually living in them. Especially a place like NYC, with it's constant movement and pace. Oddly enough, I can truly appreciate and enjoy both city life and country life. I like a balance of both, which is why I take retreats into the country.

Yup, can you believe it? I threw cat poop out my window - tee hee!

"We have to be so careful about things like that here. People have been known to poison cats for pooping in their gardens - can you believe that?"

    Yikes!

Luckily, I did that when I was very young and foolish. Now, I know better. NO CAT POOP OUT THE WINDOWS!

  31. Hey Dude,

Long time no visit. I've only been to New York once. It absolutely amazed me how different NYC was from upstate. I suppose like most people who have/had never been there before, I had the stereo typical view of nothing but skyscrapers and wall to wall people.

I'd imagine going there with someone like you that lived there would be a ton of fun.

I'll try not to be such a stranger.

"It absolutely amazed me how different NYC was from upstate."

Yup...NYC is so different from upstate. Which btw I LOVE upstate NY too. It's gorgeous, isn't it?

NYC can be intense with its skyscrapers and wall to wall people. Plus, the energy there is MANIC.

"I'd imagine going there with someone like you that lived there would be a ton of fun."

It's like when I go back to London. I will walk miles and miles each day going around my old stomping grounds. Then I'm exhausted. It's so much fun. Looking forward to your next installment.

  46. Hey Jen~

"You must have been starved when you got home. Listen to me. This is what I'm worried about."

    Bwhahahahahahahaha! Oh, how FUNNY!

Yeah, I WAS starved when I got home. And I had to pee like a race horse!

"It's like when I go back to London. I will walk miles and miles each day going around my old stomping grounds."

OMG, I hear such faaaaabulous things about London. Sounds like you feel the same way I feel about NYC. I MUST get there one day. A dear friend of mine lives in the UK and says that London is the BOMB!

Thanks for stopping by, Jen! Hope you had a great weekend!

I'll be posting more photos tomorrow!

That would have been cool unless you got blamed for the new rash of poop flinging that is.
