Not only do I enjoy shopping at Trader Joe’s because of their consistently outstanding customer service, great selection, and super-low prices, but I also love that they play the best music while you’re shopping.

Every day of the week they feature a different genre.

Sometimes it’s Disco, sometimes it’s Reggae, and other times it’s R&B.

Last Friday afternoon it was Motown. And can I just tell you how much I LOVE the sound of Motown???

I truly was born with the rhythm of a brotha. Well, in this case….a sista!

At one point they played, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by the Supremes.

So there I was standing in the frozen food section, trying to decide on whether to get the box of microwavable brown rice or jasmine rice, when all of a sudden I started lip-syncing and dancing like a drag queen getting ready to go onstage; giving a killer impersonation of Diana Ross.

I don’t know what came over me, but all my awareness of anyone else around simply vanished. In my mind, it was only me, a microphone, The London Palladium, and a spotlight.

Luckily, the woman standing next to me was getting into the music as much as I was, so I knew I wasn’t the only crazy person in Trader Joe’s. And not only was she rockin' out to the music, but she was simultaneously text messaging on her phone, while never missing a word or beat to the song.

And as I looked around, I noticed that most customers were also enjoying the music.

Okay.....maybe not as FESTIVE as she and I were, but they were moving their hips and conservatively singing along with the song.

By the time I got up to the checkout line, practically the whole store was singing the reprise….

“Ain’t no mountain high enough (WOO!)….Ain’t no valley low enough (OW!)…..Ain’t no river wide enough (HEY!)….to keep me from yoo-oou!”

The guy standing behind me started laughing and said, “Would you just look at everyone’s head bopping to the music. It’s contagious isn’t it?”

(and as I snapped my fingers in a Z-formation) I said, "It sure is!"

So, this got me thinking….

Maybe that’s the whole point of why Trader Joe’s plays such awesome music. Perhaps they secretly know that whether consciously or subliminally, good music always moves a person’s soul to feeling happy.

And when they’re happy….

….they stay longer, and BUY MORE GROCERIES!

Just call me Miss Ross, y’all!

  1. Is this store local to you or somewhere in the Big Apple? We have a similar store to Trader Joe's but it's quiet as the grave in there. Maybe I should suggest they play something. Yeah a little Motown would suit me but I'd have to refrain from doing the action otherwise I might get arrested. I do have a little singsong in the supermarket but fortunately it falls on deaf ears so I'm still walking...grins. Have a great week.

  3. I so agree with you about good music in stores contributing to how long you stay perusing and buying Ron. I absolutely L.O.V.E. Motown music. Have you heard Phil Collins new CD (Going Back)- it's all songs from the Motown era and it's my favourite CD of the moment. Our local civic centre has a Motown Night once a month where they play Motown music all night long - we go to most of them and dance all night long! You would love it my friend, so when you come to England if your visit co-incides with one of these nights you must stay with us and we'll take you along there. :)

  4. The store I shop at has music playing all the time also. Just yesterday they played the theme from Godfather I. I had an urge to buy a dozen cannoli and then I shot the clerk. There was the time where they played the Stones "Satisfaction" I so pissed off by the end of the song I punched the deli person. The theme from "Beaches" made me cry and I could actually the wind beneath my wings (that is because I farted in the chicken section of the meat dept.)
I won't even tell you what "Push, Push in the Bush" made me do. Let me say that I am not allowed in that grocery store again.

So does music move you when you shop? Hell Yes!

  5. Good Morning Valerie~

Trader Joe's is in most places throughout the U.S. It's originally from California. They opened one here in Philadelphia about 7 years ago and I fell in love with it! They offer a great variety of things to choose from, it's inexpensive, and the atmosphere is always upbeat and happy!

"Yeah a little Motown would suit me but I'd have to refrain from doing the action otherwise I might get arrested."

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Sometimes the music is so great that I can't contain myself, I go WILD! Funny thing though, most people don't even notice me!

Either that, or they're simply IGNORING me - HA!

Thank you for stopping by, dear lady!

    Have a grrrrrrrreat week!

You said it! Good music in stores really contributes to how long you stay perusing and buying!

OMG...don't ya just LOVE the sound of Motown? Yes, I know you enjoy it too, because you use to play it on your blog when you had music!

No, I've not heard of the CD you mentioned but I adore Phil Collins, so I will look for it in the music store - it sounds awesome!

And so does 'Motown Night' at your local civic center. How FUN!

"so when you come to England if your visit co-incides with one of these nights you must stay with us and we'll take you along there."

Absolutely! You and I can dance the night away!

Thank you for stopping by, m'dear! Hope you had a great time on your beer and wine tasting jaunt this past weekend. Can't wait to hear all about it!

    You are a RIOT, man!

Whenever I hear Push, Push in the Bush, I'm instantly transported back to 80's, where I'm sitting on the beach in Florida; tapping my feet in the sand and tanning myself for a night out at the Disco in Fort Lauderdale!

So glad to hear that music while shopping does the same for you, my friend!

    Aren't us Libras CRAZY?

Thanks so much for the laughs, and for sharing in the great music memories!

Hey; we went to Trader Joe's. If it was the one where you entered through the back( weird set up).

We could have spent hours in there...
oh to go through all the food items that I can't get here but I don't want to pay excess lugage fees for.

Lady Dianne and Ron performing LIVE in the produce section of Trader Joe's!

    HAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHA!

Wow! I can't believe you don't have a Trader Joes's near by?!?! Dianne, you would LOVE it! Shopping there is truly an enjoyable experience. It makes grocery shopping fun!

I love seeing people out in public actually having a good time. I think I once frightened a motorist at a stop light for panting at his Pomeranian... When he gave me a crazy look I told him I was sorry... I didn't speak Pekinese.

If I lived near you I think we might get thrown out of a few grocery stores...

Oh, you should have seen me Barb, I was totally lost in my own maddness; giving the performance of a lifetime - HA!

Honestly, though....music does that to me sometimes. Especially Motown and Disco. I turn into a dancing machine!

"Hey; we went to Trader Joe's. If it was the one where you entered through the back( weird set up)."

YES! YES! That's the one I shop at! It has a VERY weird setup indeed. You have enter from the back of the store.

And I know what you mean, because I could spend hours in there also. I know quite a few of the enployess who work there, so we'll always stop and chat for a bit. Trader Joe's also offers taste-testing. I can't tell you how many times I've purchased things, simply by trying them out on their back bar setup.

Yup, the next time you and D are in Philly, we'll go on a shopping trip. And sing and dance!

  17. Now I could really picture that! I was chuckling all through this post. How can you NOT sing along to that song? I love it when a store plays ANY music, but good music is rare. I wish more stores did that here.

I was in a store one Christmas and as they sold lots of toys, there were plenty of mums with their children also shopping. I was horrified to hear, coming over the speakers, an x-rated song which was banned from the radio. It was full of sexual references and bad language! Can you believe that?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh Ron, I would have LOVED to be in Trader Joe's WITH YOU when that happened. I've never had such a happy shopping experience! Im going to ask my local grocery store to PLEASE PLAY some MOTOWN!

  20. I love Trader Joe's! It's FAAAAA-BULOUSSSS!!! To paraphrase a certain blogging buddy of mine.

Can't say I've ever noticed the music before, though. But wouldn't it be great if somebody put together a flash mob in the middle of a TJ's someday? Think how happy everybody would be THEN! Think of all the things-nobody-needs-but-can't-live-without people would buy after bearing witness to that kind of happy display.

Don't ya just LOVE good music while you shop? And Trader Joe's play the best music EVER - you'd love it!

"I was horrified to hear, coming over the speakers, an x-rated song which was banned from the radio. It was full of sexual references and bad language!"

OMG, I can't BELIEVE that!? And during Christmas??? That's horrible! No way should young children EVER be subjected to stuff like that. I'm glad to hear they band it from the store!

Yes, I know several people who are not big fans of Trader Joe's. People seem to either really like it, or not. I like Whole Foods too, but dang, they are sooooo expensive aren't they? I was just in a Whole Foods the other day to pick up some essential oils that I use.

  25. Wow. I never knew they followed a format. Listening to *actual* songs is much more enjoyable than having to listen to "muzak". Reminds me of grocery shopping this past Saturday. The Rolling Stone's "Satisfaction" was piping through the overhead speakers and I caught myself singing along with the lyrics. I looked down the isle and standing next to the Mac & Cheese was another shopping bopping her head along with the music.

Music is a virus, and everyone is afflicted!

Yes, Trader Joe's has the coolest format where they play different genres of music on various days of the week. Monday and Friday are my favorites because it's Disco and Motown!

They play Mexican party music and ratchet the volume knob a couple of notches above normal for a grocery store. It feels like a Par-Tay whenever I'm shopping there and I just keep piling the jalapeno peppers into my carriage. WTF?? Really, I have to stop and think - how many of these do I need?

I don't think you ever have to worry about being the only crazy person in a Trader Joe's. Although, I would have loved to have seen you dancing around like a "drag queen." I just imagine it being one of those scenes where everyone simultaneously breaks out in coordinated dance. I keep hoping I'll run into one of those when I'm at an airport or mall.

I'll have to pay more attention next time I'm in Wegmans to see if they have anything playing. Although the free samples in there will get you to buy more just like music would but it would be soooo much more interesting. I might have to work out a routine for the sushi bar area. Yes, a guy I've known for years works at Trader Joe's, and told me that each day they play a different genre of music. Monday is one of my favorite days because of the Disco music. However, Monday is not a good day to shop at TJ's because they're out of a lot of stuff. They usually get their new shipments on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

I've heard of Wegmans, but have never been in one.

" I might have to work out a routine for the sushi bar area. 'Turning Japanese' on cd... a kimono... my hair in chopsticks."

    HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA! That sounds AWESOME!!!!

Always so great to see ya, neighbor! Thanks so much for stopping by! Hey, did you love that little bit of snow/freezing rain we got yesterday? It's been soooooo cold lately. But, you know me...I'm lovin' it!

    Have a super day!

  47. I would have loved to have seen you bopping along in Trader Joes. And now I'm going to have to pay attention the next time I go there because I don't remember them playing music. And you have to be right about why they play the music that they do. Businesses are about making money and it's so seldom a company will do anything solely for your enjoyment.

  48. Helloooooooo Margaret~

    Sooooooooo great to see ya!

It's funny, because quite a few people who left comments said the same thing about not remembering Trader Joe's playing music. I'm beginning to wonder if it's just at the one here in Philly!?!?

The next time I'm in TJ (like tomorrow), I've got to ask if the music is corporate wide.

But OMG...the music REALLY DOES make ya wanna rock out and SHOP more!!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, dear lady!

Hope all is well and that you're having a super 2011!

  52. Hiya Nitebyrd~

OMG, I know....I never even HEARD of Trader Joe's while still living in Florida. I wonder why they don't have them there, because I think they would do very well.

  53. I always wonder how everyone that works there is so happy all the time. I can't recall that they play any unique at mine. It must just be subliminal messages on the overheard or happy gas through the duct work. I love that store!
