Last Saturday, I took the train into a wonderful little artsy and gorgeous town on the outskirts of Center City called Chestnut Hill, and was reminded once again of how much I love trains.

Out of all modes of transportation, the train is my absolute favorite way to travel.

If there was some way to take a train back to Europe or Asia, I would definitely choose it over flying or boating.

There is something so relaxing about the movement of a train. After only a few minutes of traveling, I begin to get very peaceful and sleepy.

And the train is perfect for someone like me because I like to travel fast, but on the ground. Plus, I get to view the scenery while whizzing through the various towns and countryside’s.

I detest flying for many reasons, but mainly because I’m not too keen on subjecting myself to a strip search and a proctology examination while walking thru airport security.

(especially without a proper lubricant)

Also, the thought of plummeting to the earth because one of the planes engines falls off, is not on my top-five favorite ways I would wish to die.

I mean come on, that would HURT.

Now, I WILL fly because I don‘t like being afraid of things. I force myself, however only after I’ve had a bottle of wine and one or three Quaaludes, so that when I arrive at my destination I walk off the plane looking like Bette Midler in the movie The Rose.

No, that’s not true….

I fly totally straight, which is why I can’t stand to fly.

And I didn’t always use to be like this until I was coming home from Europe back the in the 80’s, and the plane flew thru a HUGE hurricane for almost 30 minutes. I never came so close to making a ‘poopie’ in front of 185 passengers.

Talk about TURBULENCE. It felt like we had been thrown into a food processor set on puree. The plane rolled up and down and tilted left and right, while the engines roared and grind as if they were eventually going to exploded. When I turned to look out my window, I saw nothing but complete blackness--and this happened in the middle of the day!

It was HORRENDOUS. I sat there clutching the armrests of my seat, white as a ghost and sweating like I had just taken a 90-minute hot yoga class. My traveling companion had my right hand in her left hand, as she dug her 4" fake nails into my palm. I prayed to every spiritual deity in the Universe; swearing that if I ever lived through this I would be kind, loving and forgiving to all mankind, and never use the word ’fuck’ again.

Well, guess what? My prayers were answered! No sooner did I surrender all hopes of surviving, I looked out my window and saw the faint image of New York City’s LaGuardia Airport runway in the distance.

*sigh of relief*

And as soon as the wheels touched the ground, the entire cabin of passengers began clapping and cheering while the pilots voice came over the intercom….

“Sorry for the rough ride ladies and gentlemen! And the reason I didn’t come over the intercom sooner was because we temporarily lost our radar connection with the control tower, and I had no idea where we were flying. Therefore, I didn’t want to alarm you.”

OH. MY. GOD.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And as I ran out of the cabin, I thought to myself….

I will never get on a FUCKING plane again!

  1. hahaha! i'm sorry to hear about your bad experience, but you made it so funny it was difficult not to laugh, imagining you n the things you did on the plane. i'm not that fond of plane either. afraid of height, afraid of flying, somehow it just didn't feel safe being up so high up in the air. especially when the plane always shook so hard, n the metal made weird sound like its gonna peel off. i freaked out (a lot!) in plane, sometimes i even cried, most of the time my travelling companion will have to distract me. but of course it barely work during turbulences. we didn't have train here, therefore most of the time, i would choose the bus over the plane as well. although the reason i always give was the price being cheaper, hush ...

  2. Hey Ron! I'm exactly the same. I adore train travel. I am always searching for a train journey before I opt to go by air.

I've had a number of 'poopy pants' moments in the air which has contributed to my fear of air travel.

Due to my some what irrational screaming and crying I once scared a lovely Irish man on his second flight ever. By the time we got to the other end he told me he'd never fly again - that particular flight was fine! Oops.

  3. Hey that's a brilliant shot of you on a plane...grins. I only went through turbulence once and that was enough. I know EXACTLY what you were going through. I wasn't in bartering mood, didn't promise anything, I just demanded that my life be saved. It was, so someone was listening. Don't you just love the half-soaked reaction of the cabin crew? I never fly anywhere now but I do like train travel and cruising. Have a spectacular week.

  4. I love trains. (but you already know that!)

And I adore the photo--what very cool shot. I had to click and biggify and smile. Well done YOU! :-)

As for planes--I don't mind 'em. Yes, if they crash and burn with me in 'em--it'll hurt. But only for a tiny moment in time, I'm thinkin'.
:-D It's all the noise and doings just to get on the plane now a days. Ohmygosh...and they charge to fly your luggage now--what silliness. Works for me to get in the Jeep and go-- I'm more about detours and 'oh LOOK!!' and putzing my way there while I get to see all sortsa cool stuff than I am about getting there NOW.

    I'm sure that's a Libra thing.
Cuz it ain't about AGE! :-/
    Right?

    Agree with me here.....LOL

  5. LOL, but you used the word. oooh, i'm telling. other than going into the city, i haven't been on a train (does that trip count) for a long distance in forever. i'm sure the countryside and the views some places are nice, but unfortunately, not going into the city.

i don't mind flying, but it does freak me out that we are in the air, hanging on nothing. it's amazing really that things fly in the air made my man.

  6. Oh my that flight must have been terrifying!:0

I quite enjoy flying but I have never had an experience like the one you did so I've not been scared shitless. LOL

You know I love trains, we go on trains just for the fun of it all the time. You know when you come to England you really must come and stay with us so we can take you on the East Lancs Railway as well as the Motown night!

  7. Hi Ronnie,
OMG...How are we gonna get you over to Europe again?!
Man, you have a whole fan club here that is waiting for your grand tour!!

I know; when once traumatised, always traumatised. That was quite a story, babe. It takes courage for the during part and yes, the afterwards part when the idea of flying alone gets you in a cold sweat.

I have no problem with the flying part, but hate the airport part; extra security, delays, lines, etc, etc. We have come a very far cry from the era when we called it "the friendly skies". It would be a "hoot" to use that sort of ads today because flying can be a pain!

You have to work it out with yourself if you really want to see Italy & France one day. At least ONCE in your lifetime.

Take care pardner, and see you soon.

  8. I can tell you haven't flown since the 80's, you are still talking about qualuudes. Cherry Hill is a cute town. I too start to fall asleep as soon as I get on a train. Planes do that to me too. I have to get on one today. Sure hope it's smooth sailing.

  9. Good Morning Levian~

I'm glad you laughed because when I think back over this experience now, I WAS funny!

(now that I'm still ALIVE to tell it)

    HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

"somehow it just didn't feel safe being up so high up in the air. especially when the plane always shook so hard, n the metal made weird sound like its gonna peel off."

OMG! I know what you mean because that's exactly what this plane was doing. It felt like the whole thing was going break apart because of all the turbulance!!

I too am not real fond of heights. However, the height doesn't bother me on a plane because I'm enclosed. Height bothers me when I'm on something OPEN, like stepping out onto a balcony of a high building. YIKES!

"i would choose the bus over the plane as well. although the reason i always give was the price being cheaper, hush ..."

    HAHAHAHHAHAHHAAHAHA! Meeee too!!!

Thank you for stopping by and sharing your fear of flying. It's nice to know other people feel the same way!

    Have a GREAT day, Levian!

  10. Greetings Pixie~

Don't ya just LOVE train travel? I truly wish there was a train track that went over to Europe because it would make it SO MUCH easier for me to go.

"I've had a number of 'poopy pants' moments in the air which has contributed to my fear of air travel."

Yeah, I know what you mean because it makes you feel fearful of future plane traveling. Like you're just WAITING for the turbulance to hit!

"By the time we got to the other end he told me he'd never fly again - that particular flight was fine! Oops."

    HAHAAAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh, how FUNNY!!!

Can you only imagine if people like you and I sat next to one another during a flight?

    OH. MY. GOD.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Pixie! Always so nice to see your comments. Hope you had a super holiday. Happy New Year to you!

  11. What a story... you lived to tell. Some don't. And I can't but often think about them, especially before taking the plane.

You guessed it, I hate planes, and thus looooove trains. I feel restless before flying, yet just like you, refuse not to do it. That would be caving in to my fears. And that is not what this lil' lady is about.

So in two weeks, here I fly again! Never regretting having done that... once I get there and discover all that I would have missed, had I let the little voice convince me to stay ground-bound.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA!!!!

"Don't you just love the half-soaked reaction of the cabin crew?"

Yes, I know. I was SO thinking of you while I was writing this.

Awwww...thank you, dear lady. I took a bunch of photos that I will eventually share on my day-trip either this week or next. I'm LOVIN' this camera!!!!

"As for planes--I don't mind 'em. Yes, if they crash and burn with me in 'em--it'll hurt. But only for a tiny moment in time, I'm thinkin'."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah, hopefully for only a TINY moment anyway!

Yes, I keep hearing from people that the airlines are now charging you for flying your luggage. How awful!

"I'm more about detours and 'oh LOOK!!' and putzing my way there while I get to see all sortsa cool stuff than I am about getting there NOW."

Yes, absolutely....I TOTALLY agree with you, my Libra friend! I would much rather take my time and SEE the sights along the way. Flying overseas is one thing, however traveling within the U.S. I'm in no hurry.

Always great seeing ya, Mel! Thanks oodles for stopping by!

"LOL, but you used the word. oooh, i'm telling."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yes, unfortunately I couldn't keep my promise. Bad boy!

I currently only use a train on short trips, like going into NYC or to outskirts of Philly for the day. So yes, that counts.

"but it does freak me out that we are in the air, hanging on nothing. it's amazing really that things fly in the air made my man."

OMG, I cannot believe you said that because that's EXACTLY what I think about when I'm up in air the flying. All I keep thinking is HOW THE HELL IS THIS PLANE STAYING UP HERE?!?!?!?

Yes, I so enjoy whenever you post about your train trips with MWM! I LOVE THEM!

Sooooooo true! You should have seen me the first time I had to fly right after this happened. I was on a plane with my cousin, and thank god she was there because she made me laugh through the entire flight!

And yet, in spite of it, I too prefer and have always LOVED transporting by train. My most recent voyage was to Vermont. To roll along with the landscape and chat with other calm heads was heaven! There's definitely something peaceful and romantic about riding the rails. No wonder the hobos are so attracted to trains...

  45. Hey Mark~

"I actually haven't been on a plane since 2001 - a few months before 9/11. Let's just say that incident certainly didn't make me want to hop on another flight anytime soon."

Holy cow.....I can't believe you said that because that's about the last time I flew too!!! It was April of 2001, five months before 9/11. And most definitely, that incident didn't make me wanna hop on another flight.

"There's definitely something peaceful and romantic about riding the rails. No wonder the hobos are so attracted to trains..."

    Perfectly said, Mark...agreed!

Thanks for stopping by, my friend!

    Enjoy your Tuesday!

  46. You are a man after my own heart. I love trains too. I travelled back and forth to London (where I worked) daily by train, and never lost my liking for them. I totally relax on a train. Boats I refuse to go on ever again. Just boarding one makes me sea sick! I didn't mind flying when I was young, but no more. I did a two hour flight a few years back and couldn't wait to get back on firm ground!

I may have actually died of fright if I'd been on the plane with you!

  47. Hey Babs~

"You are a man after my own heart. I love trains too."

Aaahhhh....don't ya' just ADORE trains? I think Mark said it perfectly when he shared that there's something peaceful and even romantic about train traveling.

I've never taken a boat anywhere, but would be willing to try it. However, the thought of sea sickness does cross my mind, yet I know you can take something to prevent it, just in case!

"I may have actually died of fright if I'd been on the plane with you!"

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA! I almost DID die of fright!!!

Always so nice to see your comments, dear lady! Much thanks for stopping by!

Hope you're enjoying a FAB week!

  48. I too, hate flying. All it takes is one bad flight and you are traumatized for life. For that reason, my family and I have taken several cruises...out of New York, just to avoid the plane. for the life of me, I don't know how the stewardesses/stewards manage to do it, and serve coffee no less. Oh, wait you have to pay for that now.

  49. Hiya Ron...

I hear ya 150% and I will see you on that feeling and raise you 20!!! Seriously- I hate flying and whenever there is any turbulence, there's risk for me to start having a panic attack- been there and DONE that! On the plane back to France from Cali with Alex and they had the whole flight crew in front of me, comforting me and then bringing me the OXYGEN!!! Oh la la! When I got back to France, I decided that this problem flight merited a trip to my doc to see what could be done to sort out these feelings of fear and utter AXIETY! He gave me a prescription for something I cannot even pronounce and every time I fly, I dissolve a small tab under my tongue and it totally takes the 'edge off.' So, it's actually worked pretty well for me b/c ever since a 'white knuckler' flight from Cali to NJ years ago (to visit my dying grandmom), have had a HORRIBLE fear of flying... Yet, look how much I DOOOO travel by plane, in spite of this real fear-- Amazing, isn't it? There's still hope for you,
seriously! AND, you are going to have to one day make the trip out from Philly to Paris to visit all of us... eventually, right??!!! : )
See you soon... Happy travels and a safeeeeeeeeee landingggggggg!

    Hugs, Leese

  50. That last cartoon totally did NOT help my hatred/fear of flying. I prefer the good ol' locomotive too. Makes me want to be in a country where they have those bullet trains that go like 928374 mph!

  51. Hi Gal From Brooklyn~

"For that reason, my family and I have taken several cruises...out of New York, just to avoid the plane."

I HEAR ya', dear lady! One of these days I really need to try a cruise because I hear such wonderful things about them. I would even take the chance of getting sea sick over CRASHING in a plane - HA!

" I don't know how the stewardesses/stewards manage to do it, and serve coffee no less. Oh, wait you have to pay for that now."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Do you remember when they would serve you a COMPLETE dinner which was INCLUDED in the price of your fare? Those days are gone!

A good friend of mine in the U.K. is a flight attendant for Virgin Airlines and she STILL says that flying is the safest way to go!

    Um....I don't know about that?!?

Thanks for stopping by! Grrrrrreat to see ya!

Hope you're having a wonderful week!

  52. Hey Dr. Cynicism~

"That last cartoon totally did NOT help my hatred/fear of flying."

Bwhahahahahahahahaha! When I found that cartoon online I died laughing because that's exactly what I look like when I fly!

"I prefer the good ol' locomotive too. Makes me want to be in a country where they have those bullet trains that go like 928374 mph!"

Meeeeeeee too! There's nothing like a locomotive!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy!

Hope you're having an awesome Wednesday!

  53. Hi Leesa~

"they had the whole flight crew in front of me, comforting me and then bringing me the OXYGEN!!!"

OH. MY. GOD. that sounded horrible. I bet the turbulance was horrendous!

" I dissolve a small tab under my tongue and it totally takes the 'edge off.' So, it's actually worked pretty well for me b/c ever since a 'white knuckler' flight from Cali to NJ years ago."

Yes, I hear there's 'things' you can take to help with the anxiety of flying. Years and years ago I went to a 'hypnotist' to help me with flying, and it worked for awhile. It was amazing!

"AND, you are going to have to one day make the trip out from Philly to Paris to visit all of us... eventually, right??!!! : )"

One of these days, EVENTUALLY - HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, LEESA! Hope you're having a faaaaaabulous Wednesday!

  54. Ron, I apologize for laughing, but as others said above, when reading your plane story, it was hard not to.

But I can understand. I don't like flying any more than the next guy either. I'll drive if at all possible!

  55. Hey Constant Complainer~

No, apologies needed, sir! I'm glad you had a laugh, that was my total intention. Looking back now, I think was HYSTERICAL!!!

"I don't like flying any more than the next guy either. I'll drive if at all possible!"

You said it, man! I'll drive if at ALL possible!

Always so great too see ya! Much thanks for stopping by!

Hope you're enjoying a super Wednesday!

  56. That was a terrifyingly humorous post. I can't imagine having to go though such a turbulent flight. The wife and I are going to visit her folks in October, and I'm sure I'll be thinking about your experience as we cruise at 30,000 feet. Thanks! Heh...

Now as for trains, I've never been on one myself, but the wife and I plan on taking a train trip sometime just to say that we've been on one. I'm actually looking forward to it.

I'm soooo sorry about that, buddy! Listen, just drink a glass of wine and take one Quaalude before flying....you'll feel faaaaaaaaaabulous! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

OMG...you'll LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the train! It's so much fun and MUCH safer than a damn plane!

Thanks for stopping by, Herman! Always great seeing ya! Hope you had a super Thursday!

X to you and the family!
