I’m one of those people who can eat a bowl of cereal anytime, it doesn’t have to be just for breakfast. I’ve actually been known to wake up hungry in the middle of the night and grab myself a bowl while sitting in the dark; watching a partial episode of I Love Lucy from my video collection, then brush my teeth and go back to sleep.

Cereal is one of those great little snacks that fills my tummy whenever I want something satisfying, but not overly heavy.

I think my mother is perhaps responsible for my passion with cereal.

When I was a kid, she had a designated cabinet in our kitchen that was always stocked with a bumper crop of cereal and a wide variety to choose from. I bet we had more cereal in our home than Kellogg’s had in their factory.

Let’s see, when I was a youngster some of the more popular cereals were Cap’n Crunch, Apple Jacks, Fruit Loops, Count Chocula, and Lucky Charms. However, I always hated Lucky Charms for two reasons. One, because those mini heart, star, clover, and moon marshmallow charms tasted like nothing more than pieces of sugary Styrofoam. And two, the TV commercial with that little leprechaun scared the living HELL out of me with his creepy voice....

“Always after me Lucky Charms….they’re magically delicious.”

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! That makes my skin crawl!

Leprechauns have always reminded me of freakish creatures that are neither adults or children, but rather stuck somewhere in between.

I think my favorite cereal back then was probably Trix. Not only did I enjoy the taste, but I loved how colorful it was. Plus, they were specifically made for kids, remember?

“Silly rabbit….Trix are for kids.”

Then, as I older, I began eating more ‘health-conscious’ cereal with less processed sugar and more nutrients. I now purchase a basic cereal with whole grains; then add my own fresh fruit (bananas, strawberries or blueberries) and 2% milk. I will sometimes even add sliced almonds and a sprinkle of granola.

I can literally make a feast out of a bowl of cereal.

People are always amazed that for being such small guy, how much food I can consume. Now, when I tell you I eat cereal, I don’t mean one bowl. I can sometimes eat TWO in one sitting. It only takes me about three or four days to kill off a large box of cereal.

I think if I were ever stranded on a deserted tropical island, the only few things I would crave would be my age-reversal skin serum, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and an unlimited supply of cereal and 2% milk.

Yes, I do enjoy other foods, however cereal is something I can’t live without.

So, there you have it folks, I confess.

I’m a harmless.....

Have a delicious weekend everyone!

  2. harmless to us maybe, but definitely not to the cereals! my all time favorite would have to be Koko Crunch. especially with fresh milk. because after you finished all the cereals, instead of white milk, you get chocolate milk! it never failed to amuse me, like it is some magic or something. second comes the colorful Trix! i think it was either because of the different flavor 1 box can contain, or because the milk changes colors too. hm, i wonder .. but you, you bring cereals killing to a whole new level. even at night, getting out of bed for a bowl of cereal or two! oh, now that you remind me, it has been a while since i ate those with a tiny chunk of honey or something. that tiny something was absolutely delicious!

  3. Wow, and i thought my husband was the ONLY one who could eat that much cereal....his fave is PUFFED RICE [cardboard] and Raisin Bran with a side of Cheerios. And being gluten free, i miss it like hell. xoxox

  4. Frosted Flakes. I can eat those until my tongue bleeds.

  5. Way to take us back, Ron! I hated those marshmallow thingies too. I picked them all out of my Count Chocula.

Now I'm all about fiber. I just bought a box of All-Bran last night. Word of warning, if you're not used to 40% bran, uh, just stay close to a bathroom. That's all I'm sayin'.

  6. Good morning, Ron. Cereal killer, eh? I admire anyone who can eat cereal in great quantities. It plays havoc with my insides so I can't join in the fun of eating in the middle of the night. Mind you if I did I would never get back to sleep.Heehee mid-sleep activities are not on the curriculum in this house.... wink. Have a brilliant weekend, after work that is.

  7. You have a fabulous Friday as well, sir. And a grand weekend!

As for cereal--I remember eating it....out of the little boxes lined with foil that you cut opened poured milk into and pretended it was a bowl to go. (omgosh what fun that was wayyyyyy back when!) Sugar Pops. LOL That's what I remember about cereal. And that's about all I wanna remember about cereal.

Well........that and I always felt sorry for the poor wabbit who never got any Trix.

    Yeah, yeah......kinda like that....LOL

  8. MWM and I both love cereal. I prefer Branflakes, MWM likes a variety - Cornflakes, Shreddies, Sugar Puffs, Curiously Cinnamon, Rice Crispies. He has sugar on his I don't have sugar on any cereal even porridge, I just have fresh fruit on it to sweeten it up. Do you have sugar on yours?

  9. Hi there Ronnie,

I hope that you had a good work day.How is life going without( or much less) of that nasty cold?

You know, you could have much worse food addictions that being a cereal addict. If you choose your cereal well, it is wonderful stuff!
I really enjoy cereal too, and I had a great time going down "memory lane" with the different cereals you listed!!

I went through all of it as a kid and turned into eating what "Mikey likes"; LIFE. That has to be one of my all-time fav food commercials, too!
And no, I can't buy life cereal here in France. Though some of the bigggies (Frosted flakes, corn flakes,Cheerios, etc). I love muselli too.

Heck, I am getting hungry; normal because we are almost at dinner time!

Big hugs and see you soon.
    XO

  10. I was afraid you just might be a Cereal Killer, heck I woke up this morning with that thought in my head, and when I noticed the empty box of Trix lying on the counter my fears were confirmed.

Cindy must have the same metabolism as you as she can put away more food than the large men in our family and she remains the skinny little girl.

Cheerios is a staple in our house as it keeps my blood sugar from spiking and I do love the taste.

Excellent Post Buddy now I no longer have to worry.

  11. It's almost time for the leprechauns to come out, better find a good hiding place! I like the sugary cereals by the handfuls as snacks, and the good stuff like raisn bran with milk. However, nothing can beat a good old rice krispie treat!

  12. Oh Ron, we are SO MUCH alike. I wake up in the middle of the night to eat cereal too. Its the best. I like mixing all different ones together in a gigantic bowl!

  13. Yes, in my house "back in the day" we also had a cereal cabinet, housing all those sugary cereals you just mentioned, long before we all became health conscious. Hey, it didn't kill us, cause after a bowl of cereal, we worked it off outside. Sit in the house? That was only if you were sick! I, myself, have become addicted to Honey Bunches of Oats, and can eat it right out of the box.

  14. In college, I lived on cereal. I ate at least a couple of bowls a day. I was also running long distance so the amount of carbs I could consume was phenomenal. I miss those days because I truly love pasta too.
    Now I'm hungry!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh we are very alike where cereal is concerned then. I have a bowl of cereal every night, before going to bed - just in case I get hungry, and could happily eat cereal as a snack anytime of the day too. We always have about six to eight boxes of cereal going at any one time in our house :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hahaha! We are cereal killers too. I do as you do; buy a box of basic 'healthy' cereal, and add banana, blueberries, almonds etc and make a meal of it. My husband has bought himself an extra large bowl just for his cereal. We can both eat it at any time of the day, too.

Is there some kind of club, or self-help group we should join?

"harmless to us maybe, but definitely not to the cereals."

    HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA!

Yes! Yes! It WAS like magic! I too remember eating Koko Crunch and having it turn the milk into CHOCOLATE. It was like getting a bowl of cereal and a glass of chocolate milk in one!

It's funny, because last night after I finished publishing this post I had a bowl of cereal - honest!

Thanks for stopping by, Levian. Hope you had great Friday.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  18. Hello Linda ~

"Wow, and i thought my husband was the ONLY one who could eat that much cereal...."

    Yaaaaaaaaaaaay....another cereal killer!

I agree, Puffed Rice (cardboard)! Raisin Bran is okay, however I have to watch how much bran cereal I eat because of all the fiber. I'm not fond of spending all day in the loo - HAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!

If you like cereal but can't eat gluten, they have some wonderful rice cereals out there that have zero gluten. I eat one called Rice Chex and it's awesome!

Thank you for stopping by, dear friend! Hope you're feeling well.

OMG, OMG, OMG...yes! yes! I TOTALLY forgot about those, Mel!!!! They were a BLAST! And the great thing about those was that you didn't need to dirty a bowl and then have to WASH it afterword.

I wonder if they still make those?

OMG, Porridge!!! I forgot that's what you refer to as oatmeal in the UK. I LOVE IT!!!!!! I too enjoy oatmeal/porridge, especially during the colder winter months.

No, I don't any surgar to my cereal at all. I just like the way fresh fruit adds it's own natural sugar.

Yes, I had a very good day at work today, it was soooooo busy for Valentine's Day purchases. I'm pooped! My cold/flu is now officially over - yaaaaaaaaaaay! I feel 100% well again!

"If you choose your cereal well, it is wonderful stuff!"

I agree, and it can be very healthy. I can actually make a meal out of cereal.

"I went through all of it as a kid and turned into eating what "Mikey likes"; LIFE. That has to be one of my all-time fav food commercials, too!"

Yes! Yes! I loved that commerical too. I can still see that little boys face! I like Life cereal because it's very basic and not loaded with a TON of surgar.

Muselli I have also tried and enjoyed. I tend to go for the more simple cereals and then add stuff to it.

Thanks much for stopping by, my friend! Always great seeing ya!

"Cindy must have the same metabolism as you as she can put away more food than the large men in our family and she remains the skinny little girl."

Please tell Cindy I said, RIGHT ON! It's so nice to be able to eat whatever I want and never gain weight. I actually have to eat a lot to KEEP weight on, however I try to eat healthy. I'm one of those people who eats throughout the whole day, but not heavy meals. I think by doing that it keeps my metabolism consistant.

LOVE Cheerios too! It's one of those simple cereals you can add things to.

Yes, I too enjoy eating cereal just by the handful (no milk). It's a nice little snack while watching a movie at night.

"However, nothing can beat a good old rice krispie treat!"

Funny you mentioned that because while I was on a break at work today, one of the girls I work with was eyeing a rice crispy treat at Starbucks and was so tempted to get it, but didn't. She LOVES them!

  36. I'm with you, Ron! My favorite as a kid was 'Super Sugar Crisp.' I believe they've renamed it something more healthy sounding! Do you happen to remember a cereal called 'Kaboom'? It was multi-colored, even had blue and purple cereal pieces and I think it had a circus theme. It has to have been the most sugar possible in a box!

I like to eat dry cereal now as a snack. I add some dried cherries or banana chips and maybe a few chocolate chips and nuts to something healthy and hope for the best.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think it lost my comment again! I had left a message saying that I actually LOVE Lucky Charms but as kids since there were six of us we never got anything like that because we'd eat a whole box at a sitting! We always got stuck with Corn Flakes... I'm with Suzi though, nothing beats a homemade Rice Krispie Treat!

  38. Mmmmm, cereal... I'm actually salivating right now.
I have oatmeal (maple syrup flavor) right now in my pantry. I add a bunch of walnuts in the bowl to make it more delicious, and boy, that thing will last me till lunchtime no problem. I don't get hungry at all.
My fave ones are the chocolate weetabix. They get a bit mushy by the time I finish my bowl, but so delicious!!!
    Have a great weekend Ron!

  39. Great post, Ron! I'll have to write about my own experiences with cereal one of these days. As a kid, Cookie Crisp was like the holy grail of cereals, the one I most aspired to try, but my mean ol' parents wouldn't let me. Instead, I usually gorged on Special K - and loved it. Go figure. When I finally got a chance to try Cookie Crisp as a grownup, I was terribly disappointed.

And I agree with the not-so-lucky charms you mentioned. Blech! They were awful! All they really did was flavored the milk.

OMG, yes! yes! yes! I DO remember Kaboom!!! As soon as you mentioned the name I instantly recalled the multi-colored pieces, and I'm pretty sure I ate it as a kid!

Isn't funny how some cereals come and go, but others (like Trix and Cap'n Crunch) are still around?

"I add some dried cherries or banana chips and maybe a few chocolate chips and nuts to something healthy and hope for the best."

We always buy them when we go camping and the kids love them. and despite me being all high and mighty, my children will never eat sugar or processed anything - their favourite cereal is lucky charms. And after that, anything with sugar. My eldest likes Oatmeal Crisp with the big chunks of dried fruit and the little 'un can eat hot cereal by the droves, but I sit alone with my bowl of granola, yoghurt and fruit. sigh...

"I just finished a bowl of cereal!!!!"

    Oh how FUNNY!!!!

I eat Raisin Bran too sometimes. I LOVE raisins in my cereal, and will often add them to all my cereals because they make it so chewy!

Thanks for stopping by, M! Hope you had a MARVI Monday!

  55. Hey V~

OMG, Cap'n Crunch was one of my favs too. And then they came out with one called, Cap'n Crunch with Crunch Berries - talk about YUMMY!

But for some reason, I now eat the more basic cereal with less sugar and spruce it up with nuts, fruit, and granola!

    Thanks for stopping by, girl!

I'll be thinking of you the next time I wake up at 2 a.m. while eating my cereal and watching Lucy and Ethel shove chocolates in their mouths; working at Kramer's Candy Kitchen!
