Post updates by email:

My inspiration for this post came from one of my talented blogging buddies, Mark, over at Mark My Words.

Over the past several weeks he has shared a few posts about his fascination with all things paranormal, particularly ghosts. He asked his readers if they too believed in ghosts, and I for one said that I did.

His posts caused me to remember an experience I had many, many years ago.

First, allow me to say that I am very open to things. I’m not someone who needs scientific proof that something is real for it to be real. I go with my feelings, therefore if my feelings tell me that something is real, it’s real.

One of my all-time favorite films is The Sixth Sense. It's pure genius. And I think it’s ironic that the story was set and filmed in Philadelphia, which is where I was born and now live again. I once saw an interview with M. Night Shyamalan, who was the writer and director of the film, and also a Philadelphian. He said that many of his stories are set in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania because of its ‘ghost-like’ feel. And he’s right, Philly does have a ghostliness about it. Perhaps it’s all the old American history and architecture, but you can feel the presence of people who once lived here. It’s as if a part of their essence still remains.

Now I don’t find that scary in anyway. Truthfully, find it very comforting and kinda cool.

Yet, the ghost experience I would like to share with you did not take place here in Philadelphia, but rather Florida.

So you see, ghosts are EVERYWHERE.

At the time, I was living in a garage apartment in Orlando, which sat behind a big, beautiful old home that was about 90 years old. I lived in that same apartment for 13 years. On this one particular evening, I was visiting my landlord and landlady while we all sat in their dining room, enjoying one of our delightful catch-up chats that we would have every so often.

I don’t know how long we were sitting there, but at one point they each got up and walked into the kitchen to get us something to eat, when all of a sudden out of the corner of my left eye I saw the image of a man walking down the staircase in their foyer. He wasn’t actually walking, more like levitating down the stairs. And rather quickly. Then he just vanished into thin air.

However, in those few seconds I got a good look at him. He had light skin, brown eyes, dark hair, and a closely cropped beard. He wore a white long cloak.

Well, needless to say it startled the hell out of me; causing the hair on the back of my neck to JUMP.

I never even mentioned it to my landlords when they came back into the dining room because I knew they would think I had been smoking some killer grass.

But several months later….

….I was sitting in my kitchen having a cup of tea and talking to a woman I had recently met in a class I was taking. My kitchen had French doors that were opened at the time, which overlooked the patio area of my landlords’ home. And as casual as casual could be, this woman said, “Oh….your landlords have a ghost living in their house.”

(blinking) I said, “What did you say?”

She said, “A ghost. Your landlords have a ghost living in their house. I can see him standing on the patio. He’s got dark hair, dark eyes, and a beard. He’s wearing a white robe. But don’t worry, he’s a friendly ghost.”

OH. MY. GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, now whenever anyone asks me if I believe in ghosts, I say….you better believe it, baby-cakes!

I see dead people……

  1. omg! i too, believe in ghosts, spirits, etc. talking about the movie sixth sense. it was the exact movie that spooked the hell out of me in the cinema when i was so much younger! it freaked me out for one whole week! i can barely sleep, i can barely shower because i have to be alone in the bathroom with a mirror! n i had been such a huge fan of horror movies before that (thankfully i slowly returned having the luxury to watch horror movies again lately). i guess what frightens me the most in that movie was that they look so normal, so "alive". n one turn of a head changes everything. seriously, everything! fortunately i have not had any experience seeing the spiritual beings, feelings maybe, but one cannot be sure if it's real or just our mind playing tricks with us based on that. honestly, i wouldn't want to know!

  2. I've never seen a ghost properly but often I catch a vision from the corner of my eye. I do believe there's a ghost in my house because things used to disappear and reappear frequently at one time, though not so much these days. When we had our dog he would be fast asleep on the rug and suddently prick up his ears and his hackles and start growling at the door to the hall as though he'd heard something our there when there was no-one else in the house.

  3. O.M.G. Ron!!!! That is the scariest ghost story ever! Did you ever mention it to the landlords? They must have known! TOTALLY CREEPY!!!!

I generally don't believe it and those shows on the TravelChannel on the weekends seem really fake to me. But when someone I know tells me they saw or heard something, I BELIEVE!

  4. How freaky! A friend of mine had a ghost experience while living in an old house in Newport, RI after college. When I went out to visit her a couple of months ago, I made her drive me to the house because I so wanted to see where her experience happened.
I haven't had anything like that happen to me but I think I've never let myself open to it. After my mom died and I went back to CA staying in a hotel before the funeral, I actually slept with the light on. I kept thinking that maybe she would visit me. My husband hadn't joined me yet. That's how spooky I find the whole thing.

  5. I don't have that much trust in my feelings--but I do in my senses, if that makes sense.
And like you, I have a belief in 'paranormal' (whatever normal is--LOL).

    I've seen, experienced and believe.

I have a sense of comfort from their presence, most times.
    Strange, but true.

  6. ...That is AWESOME! I've never seen a ghost but I would love too, you know just so it would validate the fact that they exist. Kinda like God, just show me you exist so I know I'm not prayin' to Mickey Mouse or somethin'. He's gonna get me for this comment I just know it! lol... ;o)

...My luck would be I would run into a mean ghost, you know the type that slam doors, throw steak knives, etc... Do you think there are animal ghosts? I know this is gonna sound weird but over the years of having pets we've had two black cats and a little black Schipperke dog and each one had to be put to sleep due to illness or old age catching up to them and every now and then I see a small black blur in our house...I know, weird right? I've seen it multiple times and it's always close to the floor. I'll stop now before you really start thinkin' I fell off the Turnip Truck or somethin'...lol :o)

...Great story Ron! The entertainment never stops here that is fo' sho'! ;o)

...Happy Monday and blessings too... :o)

My luck would be I'd get some mean, weirded out, sexually demented ghost of some sort, I'm just sayin'... :o\

  7. Boo!

I can say that I've never actually seen a ghost, but some creepy things have happened in my family right after people die. Like dishes falling out of cabinets and a a big black crow staring in a window. Freaks me out every time.

"talking about the movie sixth sense. it was the exact movie that spooked the hell out of me in the cinema when i was so much younger! it freaked me out for one whole week!"

HAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA! Yup, I JUMPED a couple of times during the movie!

"i guess what frightens me the most in that movie was that they look so normal, so "alive".'

Yes, I know, wasn't that CREEPY? You didn't know who was really alive, or who was dead.

Yet it's odd, because for me the movie wasn't really a horror film. It was scary in parts, no doubt, but I walked away from the film feeling really more 'touched' than scared by ghosts.

And that ENDING!!! Wasn't it the BEST surprised ending you ever saw in a film? It SHOCKED me like nothing else!

    What a brilliant script!

Thanks so much fo stopping by, Levian! Your comments always make me smile!

    Happy Monday, my friend!

Yes, me too! That's how it was when I saw THIS ghost, I caught it out of the corner of my eye!

"I do believe there's a ghost in my house because things used to disappear and reappear frequently at one time...."

Ooooooooooo......have you ever tried talking to it?

"When we had our dog he would be fast asleep on the rug and suddently prick up his ears and his hackles and start growling at the door to the hall as though he'd heard something our there when there was no-one else in the house."

OH MY GOD.....I just got a CHILL while reading that!!!!!!!!!!!

I know YOU (being a Scorpio) are very open and sensitive to things such as paranormal stuff. Scorpio's are very intuned and psychic.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing on this post, m'dear! I really enjoyed reading about your experience!

"Did you ever mention it to the landlords? They must have known! TOTALLY CREEPY!!!!"

No, I never did, but I should have because it would have been interesting to hear if they had experienced anything strange in their house.

They say (supposedly) that ghosts will only make themselves visible to those who they want to see them. So perhaps this ghost wanted me to see him for some reason. However, I never saw him again after that.

"I generally don't believe it and those shows on the TravelChannel on the weekends seem really fake to me."

I agree, some of these TV shows look waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay fake to me too. Almost like a bad magic trick - HA!

Ooooo...I would have wanted to see that too! And I bet RI has A LOT of ghosts stories, like Philly. It seems that this area of the States (perhaps because it's so old) has a ghostliness about it.

"After my mom died and I went back to CA staying in a hotel before the funeral, I actually slept with the light on. I kept thinking that maybe she would visit me."

It's ironic you shared that because my mother had dreams (and visitations) from HER mother right after she died. In fact, she said that the lights in my grandmothers' house would blink off and on.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing, my friend. Muchly enjoyed!

My mother experienced similar things right after her mother passed away, like, the lights in her house blinking off and on. Also, she had vivid dreams and visitations by her mother for about year afterward. She was never afraid because my grandmother told her that she was happy and peaceful where she was.

And not only that, but I could also feel him walking on my bed at night while I was sleeping. I could actually FEEL his little foot prints on my mattress!

  23. no way! that's amazing! I totally believe it, but have never had a personal sighting or encounter to share. Cristy tells funny stories about pretend seances when she was a kid. She grew up in an extended family with 5 kids altogether, so they often invented amusements among themselves. Their seances were apparently extravagantly orchestrated to scare the dickens out of her youngest sister.

have a great week & keep that flashlight handy.

  24. I have never seen a ghost, but know that I have been touched by at least one. Probably had experiences with more than one.

When I was a kid, I swear I heard my father calling my name in our house at some point after he had died. I don't remember exactly when that was, but I remember running all over the house looking from him, then crying my eyes out over the thought that he had potentially contacted me.

More recently, I have had a few points when my husband has made his presence known. The first time was less than a week before my cousin died and approx 5 months after he had passed. I was getting a therapeutic touch treatment and was filled with this pure calm and peace. I floated out of my appointment and was just awed by the experience. I didn't realize it at the time, but when my cousin died the following week and I went to her family visitation, I had the exact same feeling. It was like I was filled up with (frig I feel like I am coming off so hollywood, but) a pure light. Everyone was so worried about me at the visitation, as it had only been 5 months since Brad died, but I knew that he was right there with me making it ok. He helped me make it through that and I KNOW it was him protecting my over-wrought nerves. He had also been that light feeling that had filled me in my TT session the week before. You can call it ghost, but he knew I needed him and he had been watching over me for months, but knew that I really needed him that day, so sheltered me from the worst. Bless his soul, as I know that he will always be there for me if I need him, be he ghost or just pure energy that I can access because of our connection.

Blessings to you Ron. I hope all the ghosts you meet are friendly ones.

OH. MY. GOD!!!!! What an INCREDIBLE experience that must have been!!!!

"frig I feel like I am coming off so hollywood, but..."

No...I totally believe every word you said!!!!

"as I know that he will always be there for me if I need him, be he ghost or just pure energy that I can access because of our connection."

Yes, that's how I think of ghosts too....just pure energy. And it's ironic that you said you KNEW that it was him protecting you, because I often feel the presence of my biological mother STILL watching over and protecting me too. I don't SEE her, but rather FEEL her presence at times. Especially when I'm going through challenging experiences in my life.

Perhaps it's because people like you and I (and others who practice Reiki, TT, and such) are very open and sensitive to 'energy', that we feel these things.

Thank you soooooooooooooo much for stopping by and sharing your experiences, my friend. You have added MUCH to this post.

  37. There are spirits all around us everywhere. I always knew you were a "sensitive". I'm not sure that's the correct word for those of us who see & feel things at a different vibrational level. Who know how many dimensions we are attached to and how thin are the veils between.
Here is one of many relevant experiences I have had:
I had just left a mind/soul breaking therapy session. I walked the block to the subway. The same subway I took home on Tuesdays for about 6 years. I swiped my card and was still in a daze. I found myself on the subway platform and had no idea how to get home, or where I was. I kept trying to remember where I lived & how to get there. I was panicking and about to scream or something like that. That was when I looked across the platform to the uptown side of the station (NYC) and there, just across, standing quietly, looking right into my eyes was the Tibetan Buddhist saint (for want of a more exact honorific) I am most connected with. He was dressed in his yellow brocade robes and his traditional head covering. I saw him clearly and there is no doubt he was there. Then he was gone and I knew where I was and how to get home. Must add here that he passed from this plane over 1,000 years ago.
There can be many explanations for this by different people and their acceptance or non-acceptance of what is "real". Everything is real -
I'll save my other seeings and voices for another time.
Ron, as always, a great post.

  38. Hey there Ronnie,
    How are ya doing, friend?
I have never seen a ghost, but I believe that we are not alone. There are many things that happen in the universe that we can't explain. And, I prefer to not try and explain them.

I have never thought of Philly as a haunted city, but naturally, whereever there are old buildings, homes, etc, there is a long past. And past lives are not always sugar & spice!

I had a dream about my Grandmother once that felt so real. And she was there in front of me and talking to me( I'll have to tell you that one), and I woke up with the most beautiful feeling... It must have been a very profound dream.

Take care and holler if you see a friendly ghost!

  39. I've never seen a spirit as clearly as you did but I have felt them and smelled them
we had a spirit in an apartment in Brooklyn
Jeffrey was a tot and she spoke to him as most spirits do, they communicate with the youngest whose mind is most open
Jeffrey told me she was pretty and smelled like flowers
I often felt her behind me and a whiff of floral scent would go by

My grandmother spoke to my granddad for years after he died and whenever she said he was about I would smell his cherry pipe tobacco

It's a gift to sense these souls who are reaching out and I'm so happy whenever they touch me

  42. Good Morning Lady Dianne~

"I've never seen a spirit as clearly as you did but I have felt them and smelled them..."

YES! Quite often, people will SMELL them rather than SEE them. It's called clairalience, which means the ability to smell spirits.

"they communicate with the youngest whose mind is most open

Jeffrey told me she was pretty and smelled like flowers

I often felt her behind me and a whiff of floral scent would go by"

I've read that before, spirits (ghosts) will communicate with the youngest whose mind is most open.

"My grandmother spoke to my granddad for years after he died and whenever she said he was about I would smell his cherry pipe tobacco."

    WOW!

"It's a gift to sense these souls who are reaching out and I'm so happy whenever they touch me."

I agree, dear lady. And I've never felt afraid or threatened by them.

Thanks so much for stopping by and adding your experiences to this post. How COOL!

    Have a wonderful Tuesday!

X to you and the gang!

I know, I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes!

  45. Fabulous story!! I'll bet if you did ask your landlords they probably would have said they'de seen the ghost. Since it was friendly, many people would eventually become okay with sharing the space.
My Ron thinks we have a ghost in our basement. Now, I did sort of get a bit of a feeling that there might be a couple spirits there recently. It wasn't a hair raising incident or anything, rather just a thought in my mind that there were a couple people hanging out there for whatever reason. Knowing my husband is totally freaked out about the possibility, I just said while I was down there ironing one day... 'don't scare my hubby, he doesn't like it'. LOL But I really don't know if I 'feel' anything down there or if I just have it in my mind that he thinks there is something there.
What you said about Philadelphia is right on. I absolutely agree with you. :)

  46. Hellooooooo Crystal Chick~

"I'll bet if you did ask your landlords they probably would have said they'de seen the ghost. Since it was friendly, many people would eventually become okay with sharing the space."

I was tempted to ask them once, but they were kinda conservative, so I didn't want them to FREAK OUT and then EVICT me for INSANITY!

    HAHAHAHAHHAAHHA!

"My Ron thinks we have a ghost in our basement."

Ooooo, really? Well, you know Scorpio's...they are very sensitive to stuff like that (energy, parnormal), so perhaps there is someone living in your basement.

"I just said while I was down there ironing one day... 'don't scare my hubby, he doesn't like it'."

    Bwhahahahahahahahhahaha! You GO, M!

Yes, Philadelphia has a very ghostly feel to it. It doesn't alarm me or anything, but I can definitely feel it. Especially down in Old City and Society Hill.

Much thanks for stopping by, neighbor. Always great to see ya!

Hope you're week is going faaaaaabulously!

  49. I do believe in ghosts and spirits. Why? I can't tell you other than I just know they are there.

Your experience was a good one, Ron!

  51. Ah, what a subject!! And what an experience!

I loooved the movie 'Sixth Sense'! As you say, sheer genius. I also loved 'KPax' because there are more things in heaven and earth, my friend ...

My Mum has had encounters with recently passed on family members before anyone had told her they were dead. In fact it must be creepy for the relatives because when they ring her to give her the news she's apt to say 'I know'.

And me? A week or so after my first dog died, I was sitting at the computer when I suddenly had a very strong 'vision' of him coming up to me with very bright, happy eyes and barking the same excited bark that he used to give when he was out in the fields playing 'sticks' with me.

And the next dog, whose passing was very traumatic for me, appeared several times as a white blur trotting through a room, or moving rapidly up the garden in the way she used to. I once felt her fur under my hand as she passed. When I was over the worst I whispered to her 'It's OK Suze, thanks for staying with me, but you can go now' and I never saw her again.

You see, I think that sometimes a soul is held by an earthly attachment. Perhaps they 'worry' about us and feel they need to stay to complete something? And maybe your landlord's ghost never got to do that.

  52. Good Morning Jay~

"I also loved 'KPax' because there are more things in heaven and earth, my friend ..."

Ah Yes! Yes! Yes! I LOVED that movie too! Wasn't Kevin Spacey faaaabulous???

"My Mum has had encounters with recently passed on family members before anyone had told her they were dead."

O.M.G.!!!!! That's incredible! I sincerely think that some people have a special 'gift' with that.

" I once felt her fur under my hand as she passed. When I was over the worst I whispered to her 'It's OK Suze, thanks for staying with me, but you can go now' and I never saw her again."

I actually got teary-eyed when I read that. I believe that animals (our pets) are placed on this earth and in our lives as guardians. I know that my cat (Jerry) was mine. It was very hard for me when he passed away. I felt like I had lost my best friend.

"You see, I think that sometimes a soul is held by an earthly attachment. Perhaps they 'worry' about us and feel they need to stay to complete something? And maybe your landlord's ghost never got to do that.'

Yes, I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Thanks soooooooooo much for stopping by and sharing your experiences on this post, Jay. Muchly appreciated and enjoyed.

Have a wonderful Thursday, dear lady!

  55. Thanks for the shout out, Ron! Always appreciated.

I love your ghost story. Daresay, I find it faaaaaabulous!! I have friends in Texas who swear their house is haunted by the spirit of a civil war soldier. They have seen him many times, and are always regaling me with interesting stories of his antics. The cool thing is, several of his neighbors have reported seeing the same apparition! Which proves my friends are not insane.

Well, they probably are, but that's beside the point...

OH. MY. GOD. That's faaaaaaaabulous! See! There ARE ghosts!!!

Yeah, I'm insane too...but that's beside the point - HA!

Thanks for stopping by, Mark. Have wonderfully ghostly Thursday - BOO!
