Okay, so I’m standing at my counter while on the job last Saturday afternoon, when a customer walks up to me and inquires about a particular product my company offers.

About three seconds into our conversation, my eyes suddenly look down at her feet, and see these…..

Every time I see these freakish-looking things, I want to take my hands and hold them up over my eyes, and scream, “NO! NO!….TAKE THEM OFF….TAKE THEM OFF….OR I’M GOING TO CALL THE POLICE AND HAVE YOU ARRESTED FOR DISRUPTING MY EQUILIBRIUM!”

Now, the really odd thing is that this woman was impeccably dressed from her head down to her ankles; sporting some of the most elegant clothing, accessories and jewelry I had ever seen. But from the ankles down, she looked as though she was getting ready to go scuba diving.

Or worse, consummate with a DUCK.

In case you don’t know, these scary-looking shoes are called, Five Fingers.

You may have seen them recently, decorating the feet of pedestrians in your neck of the woods.

Well, after staring at her peds for ten minutes, I finally had to ask….

(pointing down) “So tell me, what is the purpose of those shoes? I’ve seen them on several people this past year, and have been curious about them.”

Elated that I had asked, she said, “Oh, they’re WONDERFUL….I’ve been wearing them for the past few months because I read they are not only good for your feet, but also your posture.”

I‘m thinking, “Yeah, well, they may be good for your feet and posture, but they’re KILLING my eyes.”

Being someone who is a certified Foot Reflexologist, I can certainly appreciate the importance of taking care of your feet and wearing proper footwear. But I’m sorry, there is a difference between wearing proper footwear, and wearing footwear that looks like it belongs on Spiderman.

I can understand wearing them while exercising or puttering around the house, but why the dickens would someone wear them with a Jil Sander pant suit?

I mean come on, don’t they make them in a stylish PUMP?

So, I inquired a bit more….

“Tell me, those shoes look awfully thin, do they give you enough arch support while walking on a hard city pavement? And aren’t you a bit concerned about perhaps stepping on a piece of glass or metal, and having it puncture your foot?"

She replied, “You don’t really need arch support in shoes, that’s just a fallacy. And there is a thick rubber sole on the bottom of these shoes that prevents your feet from being harmed.

Um….

Me asked, “Well, they look kind of tight; almost like a glove. Don’t your feet feel constricted? And does the material they’re made of breathe, because my feet sweat if I don’t wear real leather shoes?”

And this is when it REALLY got bazaar….

She proceeded to take off her one of her Five Fingers shoes and handed it to me, saying, “See for yourself, the material is thin, lightweight, and very breathable.”

Just then, I began to smell the aroma of Romano cheese and vinegar.

I slowly handed the shoe back to her, saying, “Oh yes….they’re lovely.”

Quick, would someone please pass me the smelling salts?

  1. hahaha! at first glance, i thought those are real feet! until i started analyzing it purposely, then i realized, "hey, those are shoes!". oh gosh, i can't believe people came out with such designs at all. what if one of us has a particular toe bigger than the other? but then again, this pair of shoes reminded me of crocs. when people started wearing them on the street, i felt like it sorta insulted their clothing. one could be in formal or even dresses, but when my eyes travel down to their shoes, there goes the big-headed slippers. i understand that it is comfortable n doesn't has any odor n sort. but still .. fashion wise, it does more damage than anything else. btw, we still didn't to see those shoes that you mentioned yet! but by the time i do lay eyes on them, i'm sure i'll be prepared, thanks to you. :p

  2. Hey there Ron,

I know that being in retail makes you see a lot of unforgetable people :).
I am like you; I would be looking! These are weird!! I don't like the look of these shoes. OK, I am not a fashion victim, but I can't wear this.

    Can you blame me?!

How screwy can that be that she actually hand her shoe to you! My God; I would think the contrary that you must sweat buckets in that skin tight shoe.

    Not me for either!

Have a great Monday, buddy xoxo

  3. when i saw the title, i immediately thought of vibrams. ron, i want a pair, but not to wear with my every day go to work clothes, the shoes are butt ugly...but to make me a faster runner. i switched from wearing heavily padded shoes to a lighter training shoe and it's heaven. i don't have the same aches and pains i once had. i'm more balanced because i can feel the ground under my feet. much better on my back too. man i could go on and on, but i'm a believer. i wouldn't be able to wear them as regular shoes though.

  6. Aren't they just horrid? All the real die-hard, fanatics at my CrossFit box wear them. I just think they look like something someone came up with while stoned. (You know how you get GREAT ideas when you're stoned?)

That she actually handed you her nasty Five Fingers to hold makes me gag!

  7. I don't understand why they don't make those shoes look like more normal shoes. Like, the toe thingies can be in the inside, but have a normal shell toe over the whole thing.

    Ick. I hate them.

  8. so odd! yesterday on the way to Easter dinner we passed a billboard for these shoes and my DIL started talking about a friend who wears them

"at first glance, i thought those are real feet! until i started analyzing it purposely, then i realized, "hey, those are shoes!"."

HAHAHAHA! That's exactly what I thought when I saw them!!! To me they look more like a foot GLOVE, with the toe thingies. And you're right, what if someone has one toe bigger than the other!

"i understand that it is comfortable n doesn't has any odor n sort. but still .. fashion wise, it does more damage than anything else."

That's my point. It's one thing to wear them while exercising, running, etc., but with DRESS CLOTHES? No way! It totally disrupts fashion - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Crocs I could NEVER wear because they're made of plastic/rubber, and I can't wear anything plastic or rubber on my feet because I will instantly start sweating like a pig - PEW!

Thanks for stopping by, my friend! Hope you're having a FAB Monday!

  12. Hey there Barbara~

"I know that being in retail makes you see a lot of unforgetable people :)."

OMG...you wouldn't BELIEVE some of the stuff I've seen being in retail and living in a city. I could/should write a book about it - HA!

" I don't like the look of these shoes. OK, I am not a fashion victim, but I can't wear this.

    Can you blame me?!"

No, not at all because I'm the same way. I'm really not a fashion victim, but I can certainly see what goes and what doesn't. And the these shoes do NOT go with a dressy pant suit - HA!

"How screwy can that be that she actually hand her shoe to you! My God; I would think the contrary that you must sweat buckets in that skin tight shoe."

Yeah, and judging from the ODOR of her shoes.....they do make her sweat buckets. PEW!

In all my years in retail, I think this is the most bazaar thing a customer ever did - hand me their shoe!!!!

    Bwhahahahahahahahahaha!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend! Have a wonderful day and week!

    XOXO to you and D!

  13. Hey V~

Yes, yes....that's what the shoe photo in this post are....Vibrams. That's what the customer was wearing, except hers were brown and maroon.

" i switched from wearing heavily padded shoes to a lighter training shoe and it's heaven. i don't have the same aches and pains i once had. i'm more balanced because i can feel the ground under my feet. much better on my back too."

Yup, that's what I keep hearing from people - they're great for balance. And I can see that because it's like wearing nothing at all - more natural.

But with a dressy pant suit? Nah. And knowing your faaaaaaaaaaabulous style of dress, I know you wouldn't wear them as a regular shoe. I adore your sense of style, girl. Classy!

Thanks for stopping by, my friend! And thank you for sharing about Five Fingers!

Yes, you're right....we DO need arch support (not unless you're walking on the beach). I almost died when she told me that.

  19. I'm trying to remember when I was a young 'swinging sixties chic' in London. Would I have worn these then? Only if they were an outlandishly bright colour, and only with frayed jeans and lots of beads. Even then I probably wouldn't wear them for long - maybe once or twice, just for the fun factor.

I can't imagine enclosing my feet in those all day! Like you, I can only wear leather shoes.

She actually removed one and handed it to you? fresh off her foot? How revolting! Cheese and vinegar is about right!

I think because I live in a city, with tons of people walking around outside, I've been noticing them a lot. I just think it's dangerous to wear them on the streets, because of all the crap you find littering the pavements. I need more distance between my feet and sidewalk than these thin shoes.

Thank you for stopping by, my friend! Have a terrific Monday and week!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You know, I think when I was a young 'swinging sixties chic' I may have worn these myself! Do you remember when toe socks were popular? Well, I wore them but not for long because they drove my toes crazy. But I liked how colorful the socks were.

"I can't imagine enclosing my feet in those all day! Like you, I can only wear leather shoes."

I agree! Just looking at people wear them makes my feet sweat! I like my feet to feel spread out and loose in my shoes. At home, I go barefoot.

"She actually removed one and handed it to you? fresh off her foot? How revolting! Cheese and vinegar is about right!"

  26. My husband Jon has a pair. I think they are so ridiculous. I think he bought them on a whim one day. He's probably only worn them once. I was so mortified that he put them on during a barbecue we were having at our house.
There are some things that shouldn't be seen and this is one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ah yes, I know these ! But you don't wear them everyday. It's for those with in interest in barefoot running & walking.

Barefoot training helps maintaining a proper posture and there are fewer chances of injuries that are caused by running shoes.

I think Vibrams is a good invention. But the problem is that people are using them in ways that are nay nay !

  28. handed over her shoe? For real? What in the world was she thinking? Oh wait. I forgot. We're talking about a person who purchased the toe-glove-shoe-thingys.

I have seen a billboard advertisement for these contraptions, but never an actual person wearing a pair. Thankfully. I do not know if I would be able to avert my eyes from the horror.

I hope that she bought something, after subjecting you to her mildly-stale foot-glove.

  53. Lol this post made me laugh! My first experience with these was with an Ex boyfriend and he was insistent that he wanted them just because it would be funny. However funny comes with a price tag. The "spiderman" shoes as you so eloquently put it are quite expensive and I am not sure they are that great for your feet. I think the purpose of them was for runners. I read an article on them saying it was supposed to simulate running with bare feet. There is a reason we invented shoes- dont think they are intended for every day use.

  54. Hi cestlavie22~

It's so nice to see you!

    HA! Yup, you said it!

And I agree, some of these shoes/gloves are marked at $100.00 or more!!!

"I read an article on them saying it was supposed to simulate running with bare feet."

To me that makes no sense what so ever. I mean, if your running on a hard surface I would think you would need the cushion of a REAL shoe to absorb the shock, right?

"There is a reason we invented shoes- dont think they are intended for every day use."

    Thank you!

Have a super day, my friend. Thank you for stopping by!

    X
