I May Be Changing My Domain Name

Okay folks, I need your advice….

This past week, I’ve been investigating purchasing my own domain name.

Which means, my present URL would go from triloquist dot blogspot dot com to triloquist dot com.

I’ve been thinking about doing this for some time now, but really didn’t know how to do it or what it involved.

I probably should have done this much earlier on, but kept procrastinating.

Not only do I want to do this because it would be more professional, but more so because by purchasing my own domain name will give me ownership of this blog.

I think it’s awesome that we who have our blogs either hosted on Blogspot dot com or Wordpress dot com have everything done for us for free. However, the reality of this is that we DO NOT own our blogs unless we own our own domain names.

Did you know that? I didn’t.

I can either purchase a domain through Blogger/Google (for $10.00 per year), or from a company that sells domain names. I would rather purchase it from Blogger because it would be so much easier to set up and have everything transferred to my new domain. Also, Blogger will continue to host my blog for free.

I don’t wish to self-host my blog at this moment, but simply purchase my own domain name.

My question is, have any of you done this on Blogger or Wordpress? And if you have, do you have any suggestions or advice on making the transition smooth?

Also, I’m wondering…if I should decide later on to move my blog to another blog hosting company (or self-host), will my domain name transfer too, or do I need to purchase a different domain name?

I think my biggest apprehension about switching domain names is that something will go wrong, and my readers won’t get redirected to my new domain. And what about my blog feed? Does that just redirect too?

So, if any of you ladies and gents have any feedback, I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Thank you very much!

I leave you now with some weekend photo humor…..

Have a super holiday weekend everyone!

  1. Hey Ron...

I say- GO FOR IT!! I have my own domain name at Blogger and pay a mere $10/year, too.. For the past 2 1/2 years now... It's my http://www.cupcakeprincesse.com - you can check it out, if you want!
I think it's cool to have a .com address vs. blogspot.com because it just feels diff. and feels more like 'your own' even it's still really 'blogger!'
I say- YAY- Go for it! And while you're at it, have a GREAT Frida y and a GREAT weekend up ahead... Hugs from France, Leese : )

  2. My hubby is a computer engineer so that has helped so so so soooo much and he's actually done all the tech work, and so...
My blog is on our own website. The domain name that we bought and are paying for. I have been very happy with that solution. The only bummer, if it is so, is that you cannot comment on blogs that require hosted blog sing ins, but hey I still prefer being independent. Or you can create a Google account just for that. Also, you can use a Wordpress template to build your blog on, even if independent. That is what I have.

  3. Hi Vent ! ... Err... Ron (Sorry, I forgot your name there for a bit)

Purchasing your own domain is indeed a step in the right direction.

In regards to domain name purchase, I know that the rest of your fan-club will come to your assistance.

Setting up blogger with your custom domain name is quite easy. Head to this page for instructions: How do I use a custom domain name for my blog?

I often give fellow bloggers an anal-ogy about how having a blog is so much like having a place to live.

Right now, you rent. The owners take care of all the maintenance but they could kick you out if they wanted to.

When you will have your own domain name but still hosted - it's like owning a condom-inium. Someone else still does your gardening and maintenance.

When you self-host, it's like owning a house. That one's a doozy ! You not only own it but you gotta do all the maintenance, the gardening and if something goes wrong... you ask fellow home-owners for advice & help or worse... pay for a plumber. (Will Plumb for Hose ;-)

  6. ...G'd Morning My Dear! *waving* First of all, thank you so much for the sweetest comment over at my place. You're an Angel! :o)

...I've been lurking here lately. I've been busy and it seems that I still want to read but move on and don't comment but I knew when I read your comment last nite that I had to come by and say 'hello!' and 'thank you' for the vote of confidence... :o)

...Unfortunately I know nothing about this subject. I have looked into a domain name but mine is taken and I really don't want a .org or .net so I passed on the idea. Besides I don't generate enough traffic for such a thing but it would be nice to "own" it if that makes any sense. :o\

...Again dear Ron, thank you. I'm a wallflower of sorts so self-promoting is really a stumbling block for me, and for me to get the word out about this latest venture and saving our barn is 'stepping outta the box' for me to say the least. *shudders*giggle* ;o)

...It's people like you that make people like me grateful. :o)

    ...Have a fabu' weekend! (((hug)))

    ...Blessings... :o)

i've moved one blog from wordpress to my own domain and hosting. i would have stayed with wordpress hosting, but it would have cost more for some reason i can't remember. since you only want to buy a domain name it should be very easy to do through blogger.

Also, I’m wondering…if I should decide later on to move my blog to another blog hosting company (or self-host), will my domain name transfer too, or do I need to purchase a different domain name?

you would have to point your domain name to your new registrar. you can keep your domain name but the dns numbers would change.

none of this makes sense right. simply, you bought the domain name, you can take it with you wherever you want to host. want to move your blog? download the file from blogger and import it into your new home

  9. Ron, at the beginning of April, I hired someone and had my blog redesigned. It included a transfer from Blogspot to my own custom domain name that I paid $10.00 a year for through Google. Anyone following me was automatically redirected to my new domain address. However, I must say that I noticed a drastic drop in the number of comments I get per post since the changeover. Perhaps it's just coincidence, but although the old address points followers to the new ones, I'm still wondering if I lost people.

I'm also seriously considering moving my blog to WordPress. A lot of people I talk to say there are so many advantages that you don't have on blogger. But even on WP, you have the options of being hosted, or having your own custom domain that you solely own yourself.

  11. Hey Leesa~

Oh wow....I don't think I ever realized you have your own domain name on your cupcake blog. I will check it out this weekend.

Apparently (from watching a video tutorial on Blogger), it seems much easier to just purchase the domain from them because they simply transfer everything over to it. But, I also read (on the Blogger forums) some people experienced A LOT of issues.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your feedback, my friend. I really appreciate it! Have a great Friday and a great weekend!

Yes, I noticed your blog has its own domain name, but didn't realized you were self-hosting. I think when I'm really ready for it, I will do the same thing, because you have more control (especially on Wordpress dot org) over your template, than with Wordpress dot com.

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your feedback, beautiful lady. Muchly appreciated!

Yes, she's right because I at one time self-hosted a website that I owned. There are advantages to having Wordpress or Blogger simply host and maintain you blog. I don't think I'm ready to self-host my blog right now, however I would like to purchase my own domain name.

The domain name I want is available, so that's not an issue. However, I wasn't quite sure how all the redirecting and transferring worked, once the name was changed. I really should have done this AGES ago, because I've had this blog for almost five years now.

Yes, that's really why I want to purchase my own domain name, so that I can own my blog.

Thank you sooooooooooo much for dropping by, dear lady. You made my weekend!

  20. Hey Matty~

Yes, I do remember when you redesigned your blog back in April.

Apparently (from watching a Blogger tutorial), every thing is tranferred over to your new domain by Blogger. However, I did read on several forums that some people were having issues, and it wasn't working properly.

Yeah, that's my apprehension - not having my readers pointed to my new address.

"I'm also seriously considering moving my blog to WordPress. A lot of people I talk to say there are so many advantages that you don't have on blogger. But even on WP, you have the options of being hosted, or having your own custom domain that you solely own yourself."

Me too! I have a blog over at Wordpress, which I no longer post on. I know it's pretty much the same when it comes to purchasing your own domain name and having the option of either hosting on WP or self-hosting. The thing I like MUCH better on WP is their commenting system. It truly is the best out there. However, if you use WP.com rather than WP.org, you are VERY limited in template design. That's the thing I like much better here on Blogger.

Oh well...I guess we can't have it ALL - HA!

Thank sooooooooo much for stopping by and sharing your great feedback, buddy! Muchly appreciated!

    Have a great holiday weekend!

    Renting and owning.

    BRILLIANT!!!!!! And you're so right!

Thanks for sharing the link about how to use a custom domain for my blog. I think it may be the one I already watched, but I'll check it out more thoroughly this weekend. The switch (according to the video tutorial) sounds easy enough, however in several forums I've read, certain bloggers had some major issues with the transfer. But, I guess that happens sometimes, right?

Anyway, I thank you for stopping by and sharing your knowledge, buddy! I so appreciate it!

  22. Hey Rob~

Blogger allows us to purchase our own domain names, yet will still host our blogs for free. So, we can still stay with blogger if we choose.

  23. I know you want our honest opinions so here goes.

I started on Blogspot. I had many little niggles with it, but my main one was when I lost some photos from my hard drive and found out that once you upload to Blogspot, your photos are non returnable (so to speak) You can only download the tiny version straight from your post. That made me mad. My photos should be mine and not the property of Blogspot.

I decided I wanted control over my own blog so I went self hosted and didn't look back! For £28 a year I get unlimited everything - including a free domain name for life. Well worth it to me in order to own my own blog (or blogs), and have unlimited online space for backups and to store whatever I want.

A domain name is a start, but most hosts let you choose one free when you sign up, so if you did decide to go that route, you could either take your 'paid' domain name with you, or get a new 'free' one :)

All of that said, if you just want a domain name I would still say YES! every time ;)

  24. I think it's a great idea. I did buy my own domain name and just have people redirected to my site. Or they can still access it via squarespace.com. I've been lazy about figuring how to change it over completely while keeping it with Squarespace and I've been afraid that all of the good SEO I've built up will be lost going to a new domain name. Plus, the last time I monkeyed with my site and adjusted the page names, I lost all of my subscribers. That really bummed me out.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hey Babs~

Thank you so much for your honest opinion, I really appreciated it!

And funny you mentioned about the photos because I DID read that on a Blogger forum and you're absolutely correct....Blogspot DOES own the photos. That's a MAJOR bummer!

And thank you for sharing your opinion on self-hosting because I didn't realize when you sign up for it, they allow you a free domain name?! And I also didn't realize it was that inexpensive. Yes, it definitely sounds worth it.

Can I ask which hosting company you're with?

Again, thank you soooooooooo much for stopping by and sharing your feedback and advice. You gave me much to think about.

"I think it's a great idea. I did buy my own domain name and just have people redirected to my site. Or they can still access it via squarespace.com."

That's great to hear because that is my main concern. Supposedly, if I sent up my name through Blogger/Google they just redirect and traffic. However, I did read some stories where it didn't work quite so smoothly - :(

"I've been afraid that all of the good SEO I've built up will be lost going to a new domain name."

I DID read that it takes some time to re-establish your SEO (and page rank) again, once you change domain names.

  27. I own a couple domain names through Go-Daddy but they are only as protection for some of the stuff I make. I bought my domain name through Blogger for the $10.00 deal. The only thing you need to remember is to hook up your Google Analytics right away. Your page rank will also go back to zero. From what I understand, Blogger is connected to Go-Daddy for the domain name purchase. Anyway, I didn't have any problems and all seems well so far!

    Go for it, bro!

  28. I currently have 3 domain names registered for blogs hosted through WordPress. Markmywordssite.com I purchased through Go Daddy, and the other two (markpetruska.com and rosecityunwrapped.com) I bought through WordPress. It is inexpensive, professional, takes just a few clicks of the mouse, and you can easily transfer your domain name(s) should you wish to relocate or self-host later. Go for it!

  29. BTW, regarding your comments to Matty re: WordPress templates - they have added A TON in the past year and continue to average 2 new layouts a week. Most are free, some are premium which cost a one-time fee but give you the opportunity of standing apart from the crowd. Even the free ones (like mine) are super customizable. I tried blogger first but found WP to be much easier to use and packed with more features. Just my two cents. :)

"The only thing you need to remember is to hook up your Google Analytics right away. Your page rank will also go back to zero."

Yes, I read that somewhere online about your page rank going back to zero. I'm only ranked at 3, so that's okay. I don't use Google Analytics on for my blog, I use Statcounter instead and read that it automatically transfers over to your new domain - hopefully - HA!

"From what I understand, Blogger is connected to Go-Daddy for the domain name purchase. Anyway, I didn't have any problems and all seems well so far!"

Thank you for sharing about Wordpress templates. It's been ages since I posted on my WP blog, so I had no idea they were THAT customizable. Back when I was with them (four years ago), you were not permitted to change a THING, unless you paid to do it. Oh yes, changing over. I wanted to do the same but gave up at the first hurdle. I don't want to pay for a site so I thought maybe Wordpress would get me away from Blogger and the inherent problems. But... I had a look at WP and decided it was too technical. I wish you well with your venture, I really do, just so long as we can all follow. Happy Sunday, my friend.

  44. Good Morning Valerie~

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay....glad you were able to discover a way to comment! I thought of you last night when I tried to log into my blog and had issues, however it seems to have worked itself out.

" I wanted to do the same but gave up at the first hurdle."

Yes, I know what you mean because I've read many blogger forums where people had some MAJOR issues with changing over to their own domain name - like it NOT working - HA!

Yes, Wordpress takes a bit of getting use to, yet once you do, it's a GREAT blogging platform. The only thing about WP that causes me hesitation is that (unless you self-host) you cannot customize your template and I don't know whether I'm ready to do that. Here at Blogger, we can do what we want with our templates. Yet, the technical issues we seem to experiencing lately, frustrates me to no end.

If I do decide to change domain names, I will let you all know before I do it, so you're aware in case anything gets screwed up.

Question: Do you self-host or simply use Wordpress dot com? And if you do, what hosting service do you use?

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your advice and feedback!

    Have a fab day....X

Um, yea, i don' t know for sure. but i had mine hosted at wordpress as a dot com, then went to self hosted, and just paid like $10 / yr. to have it redirected automatically. not sure how blogger works, but i am CONFIDENT that you can have your domain redirected anywhere, if you self-host.

    HHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Aw...thanks, girl. You're a doll!

Yes, supposedly Blogger will redirect once I purchase a domain name, however I read on several forums that it doesn't always work so smoothly.

I'm actually considering moving over to WP in July. I'm investigating whether or not I should just self-host or use wordpress dot com and have my own domain name. There is SO MUCH involved so I want to make sure I do the best thing.

Thanks sooooooooo much for stopping by and also for your recent email. You're the BEST!

    X
