Post updates by email:

I remember hearing a brilliant line from the movie Postcards From The Edge, in which Dennis Quaid’s character says to Meryl Streep’s character…

“I don’t like this side of you.”

To which she replies….

“I’m not a box, I don’t have sides.”

And I laughed my ass off, because that line is so true.

We don’t have sides.

For pretty much all my life, people have always tried to figure me out; placing me in some sort of definable, all-consuming category.

“Ron is sweet.”

“Ron is a bastard.”

“Ron is introspective.”

“Ron is funny.”

“Ron is serious.”

“Ron is……”

I’ve heard it all. And it truly boggles me that people would think we fit into only one category. Or any category for that matter.

I quite often get that ‘look’ from people. You know the one I’m talking about? Where they tilt their head from side to side like a parrot, with a perplexed expression on their face, “I can’t quite pinpoint you!?”

In fact, at least half a dozen times people who have read my blog shared in their comments, when I posted about something more introspective than humorous, “OMG…I didn’t know you had this 'side' to you!”

As if humor is all that encompasses me.

Or, all that I feel.

I most definitely try to find the humor in what I share with you here, because that‘s pretty much how I am offline. I enjoy discovering the humor in my madness. The humor in my sometimes annoying life experiences. And having this blog has truly allowed me to do that.

Laugh at life.

But, there are also times when I wish to express and share more intimate topics.

Simply because that’s how I feel at that the moment.

Sometimes I feel funny. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel a bit melancholy. Sometimes I feel sarcastic.

And then there are times when I feel more reflective; pondering.

Yup, I can be brash, naughty or humorous at times. And then be soft, sweet or serious other times.

But it’s ALL of who I am.

Like most people, I have many feelings, emotions and moods. I also have many interests and curiosities.

However, I don’t see them as sides.

I see them as layers and textures, that make up the whole of me.

Have a fantabulous weekend everyone!

  2. awwwww.... i won't try to box you in bestie!!! never!

i SO know what you mean though, my gosh. people have always tried to figure me out. i can't tell you how many times i've heard "huh, i've never met a female quite like you. i'm not sure what to think" haha

whether that's good or bad, it's just the truth. i'm the same way, although my blog is humorous mostly, i often feel deep and introspective. there's this whole other side of me that is poetic and artsy, yet i feel sometimes like i can't share that side as much.

it's a struggle. but, you know, then you end up having 8 blogs and you lose your mind! haha.

  3. Hellooooooooooo Dear Linda~

    FAB to see ya!

" do hope but sort of assume i HAVE made the statement to you a time or two. of course, i also know you forgave me my blundering foolishness... heehee..."

HAHAHHAHAAHAHAHAHHHA! Nooooo, my friend...there is nothing to forgive because I like I said, most of my life I seem to puzzle people?!

OMG...don't you LOVE the bed????? When I saw it online, not only did I know I wanted to use it for this post, but also because I want that BED. I want that whole ROOM - HA!

And yes....it's HORRIBLY, and I mean HORRIBLY hot here right now. It feels like HELL! The humidity must be 100%.

And you know me....I'm fighting being paranoid about it too. You know I'm not a summer person.

    I'm all ready for FALL!

Thanks for stopping by, Linda. Have a wonderful weekend!

    (((( You )))))

No, I know you would never think of me in box because I know you are the same.

In fact, I think everyone is the same. We all have layers and textures that complete us.

" i'm the same way, although my blog is humorous mostly, i often feel deep and introspective. there's this whole other side of me that is poetic and artsy, yet i feel sometimes like i can't share that side as much."

OMG...not only do I LOVE the blunt humor you share on your blog, but also the times you do get introspective. And I'm not at all surprised, because most creative/funny people are. And you're VERY creative and funny!

"it's a struggle. but, you know, then you end up having 8 blogs and you lose your mind! haha."

    Bwhahahahaahahahaahhaha! I love ya, girl!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by. Have a grrrrrreat weekend!

  5. I think that "sides" is nothing more than a figure of speech, and that it's interchangeable with layers and textures. We all have different sides/layers/textures to us. Until you know someone completely, there will always be an "aspect" to that person you didn't see before.

The only "side" I want to see you on Ron, is on the "side" of the Phillies.

  6. Hey there Ronnie,

That is one great film quote; thumbs up! I am less of a movie buff than you, so I don't know that film at all( OK, I maybe I live in a box).

I call these so-called sides "facettes"( I like that; like a diamond)and we all have them. We are not static!
We change constantly and even hour to hour, may not be the same.Even if most of us have our basic personality.

I think how adversity has changed me since last year, and I even surprise myself. I found facettes of courage, hardness and independence. Not necessarily a bad thing thing( to a certain degree), in this world.

Look at yourself each day and accept that dude with all his different facettes.

    Big hugs to ya, kiddo
    xoxo

  7. Whatever, I like you just the way you are. Humour and serious sit very comfortably on your shoulders. There's an expression used here that I've never understood ... 'there's no side on her' ... does it mean the poor woman has no layers or what? But I digress. We're all concocted from different recipes... only God knows which one I came from. That's probably why hubs continually states that he doesn't understand me whaaaaaaa.

Thanks for your comment on my latest post. You're right, it should be shared.

Now you'll notice that I'm back to normal (!!!) on the commenting front. I read someone's tip to untick the Google button that says 'stay signed on' ... it worked.

  8. There's many facets to all that you ARE, sir. You're just a gem.

Oh, I know you say tapestry of different colours. I'm oppositional enough to change what you're saying to what I embrace about you--the facets which I'm privileged to know.

    G-d's kiddo.
    You get to shine.
    And you do that brilliantly.

JUST my experience in having been graced to cross paths with you a while back......

Boy....the Big Guy really does do this well, huh.

  9. Layers and textures... yay, keep them alive and coming. Popping up like happy, jolly mushrooms. You are interesting because "you are so many things, and even the ones you and I don'ty know yet". Let's let life surprise us! Just like fashion does - superficially - and good talks with trusted friends do - profoundly.

My mom's coming to visit me this weekend. I know we shall mention you in our conversations too since she adores the comments you leave on my blog. Sweet Ron!

  14. Hey there Barbara~

Isn't the film quote flawless???? Postcards came out in the early 90's. It was a film that was not seen by too many people, but it was wonderful! It was based on a book by Carrie Fisher. Shirley MacLaine was hysterical in it!

"I call these so-called sides "facettes"( I like that; like a diamond) and we all have them. We are not static!
We change constantly and even hour to hour, may not be the same.Even if most of us have our basic personality."

I LOVE how you said that....facettes; like a diamond! Great way of seeing it!

"I think how adversity has changed me since last year, and I even surprise myself. I found facettes of courage, hardness and independence. Not necessarily a bad thing thing( to a certain degree), in this world."

How true...adversity certainly does change us; creating other facettes.

HA! I've never heard that expression before, but I like it! Perhaps it means she has no definite definition to her personality - which I think is a good thing.

"We're all concocted from different recipes... only God knows which one I came from. That's probably why hubs continually states that he doesn't understand me whaaaaaaa."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! But, you're right....we're all concoted from different recipes (love that)....only God knows which one we come from!

  17. Now this is funny because I often say about people. She/he is very kind underneath her whatever. Underneath being the operative word, as in layers. I don't think I ever use the term she/he has a kind side. This was not a deliberate thing. It just came naturally to say it that way. I hadn't thought about it until I read this post, but I agree with you totally. We are made up of many layers and which layer pops to the surface depends on our situation at the time :)

  40. That is so great! I don't remember that line from that movie. I have got to see that one again.
It seems to me that the people who say that kind of thing to me are the same people who say shit like, "You should put a smile on your face." That bugs me to no end. Maybe my dog just died, maybe I'm thinking about something serious. Maybe I just don't feel like smiling. It doesn't mean I'm depressed or pissed off.
This little rodent of a horse trainer used to say to me, "What are you thinking? I can never tell what you're thinking." Then he'd follow it up with "I know you. I know how this is going to turn out, if..." (depending on the situation.) How can you never know what I'm thinking and then claim to know me. It's so annoying and presumptuous.

  45. Oh I'm guilty of saying that occasionally about people and yet I know how complex we all are and can't be defined that easily.
Well, I'm a Sagittarius with Mercury in Sagittarius, Capricorn rising, and a Cancer Moon. Neptune opposes Jupiter, my Sun is in the 10th house and Saturn rules my chart. And that's just a few of the natal placements. Don't even ask what's transiting or where things have progressed... your head would explode trying to figure it all out! We're all very unique and complicated individuals.
Some people who would say they know me best still probably don't know a few things about me. There's even things I don't know about myself yet!

  47. Excellent post Ron,

So true, none of us fit into any particular category and when folks place us into one they miss who we actually are.

There are so many emotions and situations that make up life and like the line from a Tracy Lawrence song “The only thing in life that remains the same, is everything changes” so with constant change in our lives keeps us from being in only one category.

You fit into all categories my friend and in my opinion your layers and textures make you a good friend.

Therefore, how could we ever fit in any category, right?

Thanks a bunch for stopping by! You made my weekend! Please give a hug and hello to Miss Cindy, okay?

    X to you both!

I see them as layers and textures, that make up the whole of me."

Well said! I'd hate being pigeon-holed into a certain category, then having to run my life to live up to such finite expectations. What I'm planning to tell our son when he's old enough to understand is to live your life the way you see fit, be responsible enough to understand right from wrong, have empathy for others, and do your best at whatever it is you wish to do.

I'd like to think that he'll life his live without "sides" (fingers crossed).

OMG...I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what you're planning on sharing with Tyler when he's old enough to understand.

    BRAVO, sir!

And know YOU, I'm sure he'll live his life without "sides" because that's how you are!

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing on this post, buddy! You're an inspiration and a hell of a great guy!

Hope you and the family had a wonderful weekend!

X to you, Karin, and Tyler!

  51. aw, what a beautiful end to that post. layers n textures that make up the whole of you. artistically put as well! i unfortunately, am one of those who referred to all these emotions n even expressions to be "sides". that side of you, this side of you, i wondered from where were we influenced? or perhaps just like you had mentioned, it was so much easier to just throw everyone into one category than another. which we in fact, can never fit perfectly into one!

  52. Greetings Levian~

"i unfortunately, am one of those who referred to all these emotions n even expressions to be "sides". that side of you, this side of you, i wondered from where were we influenced?"

I think we ALL have said that at one time or another, I know I have. I think it may be because it's something we've heard other people say...that side of you, this side of you and we just say it.

But hearing that brilliant retort from the movie...."I'm not a box, I don't have sides" made me rethink it.

Cause we really don't have sides. They're more 'dimensions' that make make up the whole of us.

Thank you so much for stopping by, my friend! Always a delight reading your comments!

Hope you had a MARVI weekend!

  54. Finding humor in life, all of life, is something I strive for, too. It helps keep ones sanity, I think.

Layers is a much better term than sides, Ron.

  56. Layers like an onion.... one of my thoughts b/c I've seen Shrek sooo many times w/the kids... it might be a silly cartoon, but that line always struck me.

I just love your writing - you always make me think, smile and often laugh... !

"Layers like an onion.... one of my thoughts b/c I've seen Shrek sooo many times w/the kids... it might be a silly cartoon, but that line always struck me."

    HA! I LOVE that analogy!!!!!

I once had a Reiki (energy therapy) teacher use that same expression when she said that as we heal, we peel away the layers of our illusions; getting to the core of who we really are. Like an onion!

Thank you so much for stopping by, Katherine. Always so great to see you here!

And thank you for your kind words.

Hope you're having a great week. See you next Monday!
