Okay....Let's Be Gay Today!

If viewing photos of things like, drag queens, a porta-potty, or poodles who’s hair has been dyed the color of the rainbow flag is not your cup of tea, you may want to close your eyes while reading this post.

Two weekends ago, I was part of an outside work-event at the Annual Philadelphia Gay Pride.

One of the companies I occasionally work for had a booth set up, where we sold various products to those attending the festivities.

Let me start by saying, I was not looking forward to this event because it had been ruthlessly hot and humid that week. Therefore, the thought of standing outside in direct sunlight for six hours had me anticipating a complete emotional and physical meltdown.

For those of you who may be new to my blog and don‘t know….. I HATE BEING HOT. Summer is my least favorite season. Yeah, the whole world loves summer, I know. However, I would rather be stranded in Antarctica wearing only a THONG and BAREFOOT, than be subjected to any kind of heat. And heat to me is anything above 55 degrees.

Yet, mother nature took pity on me that day and gave us cooler temperatures and a beautiful breeze.

So, I was a happy camper!

Also, I haven’t attended anything ‘gay oriented’ in so many years, I thought I would suddenly go into GAY EUPHORIA, being surrounded by predominately other gay men and women all day.

I feared that I would spontaneously break into my Diana Ross lip-syncing routine of Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.

I also feared that my dramatic gay chromosome would go into overdrive and I’d become Abba’s Dancing Queen.

But alas, I didn’t. I was very reserved because after all, I was technically at WORK and didn’t want to embarrass myself.

Our event turned out to be a smashing success. And I have to say, the people who organized Gay Pride did an outstanding job. Everything was very well-orchestrated and executed. I had a wonderful time!

Oh, except for the drunk guy who walked up to me, asking my name and then obviously started flirting. But then informed me that he wasn’t gay because he didn’t want me to get WRONG idea.

He finally walked away, but made sure he came back before he left and said to me, “Your name is Ron, right?” I said, “Ron, that’s right.” And then he winked at me.

Yeah, right. Wasn’t gay.

*wink*

Anyway….here are some photos I took during that day.

A group shot of the gang at our booth.

About an hour after being there, one of my co-worker’s and I had to pee. So, we found this HUGE porta-potty that was about the size of my studio apartment. My co-worker used the potty first. And as soon as she got inside and closed the door, she yelled, “OMG Ron, you’re going to die because it’s hotter than HELL in here. It’s like an oven!” And she was right ….I DIED!

There’s nothing quite like watching a drag queen lip-sync to The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia.

A Lady Gaga impersonator.

Poodles who were dyed the color of the gay rainbow flag. How festive is that?

Notice the poodle with dreadlocks. I LOVE it!

A costume designer strutting his stuff onstage. You GO, boy/girl!

This last photo is a fantasy of what I truly wanted to wear to this event…

Have I ever told you how much I adore the color PINK?

  1. Oh that sounds like a fabulous day, I would have so liked to have been there. You don't have to be gay to enjoy things like that do you? :)

    Love the photos Ron. :)

  2. Hello Ron,
I think you look great in pink!! You remind me of the cotton candy at the carnival. The festive mood could be sensed as I looked over the photos. I liked that you took a shot of the toilets. I can relate to how hot it is inside those gigantice microwaves. It is the sauna that I always wanted. That is where the phrase "hot shit" was invented. It has been awhile that I have been on blogs. So, I just stopped by to say hello. We are Maine this weekend and having a great time.

  3. Pink suits you, Ron, but I don't go a bundle on the hair. I didn't know there was a gay rainbow flag... that explains the girl with the multi-coloured legs. Felt a bit sorry for the poodles although I don't expect they minded their coats dyed for a special occasion. Glad to see you're back in harness again and producing entertaining posts. Happy Monday, by the way.

  4. Great photos, Ron. Sounds like quite an event. It's funny, I love the warm weather, but I laughed at how you'd rather "be stranded in Antarctica wearing only a THONG and BAREFOOT, than be subjected to any kind of heat." And I think you'd look great in that last outfit. But you probably shouldn't wear it in Antarctica.

  5. LOVE. THIS. POST. I wish I could have been there! I love LGBT events. I'm not gay myself, but adore (forget adore, I LOVE) my gay friends. They really know how to have a good time. I attend every event they have in my area (albeit few and far between). Thanks for sharing!

  6. Good Morning Akelamalu~

    OMG...you would have LOVED it!

No way, you don't have to be gay to enjoy things like this. In fact, even though it was an event for gay pride, there were a TON of all kinds of people there; having a great time!

The overall atmosphere was very open and friendly!

Thanks for stopping by, m'dear. Hope you had a great week. I can't wait to catch up on your travel posts!

    GREAT to see ya, buddy!!!!

"I think you look great in pink!! You remind me of the cotton candy at the carnival."

HA! Funny, because that's EXACTLY what I thought too!!!!

" I liked that you took a shot of the toilets. I can relate to how hot it is inside those gigantice microwaves. It is the sauna that I always wanted. That is where the phrase "hot shit" was invented."

    Bwhahahahahahahahahahahaha! You KILL ME, MAN!!!!

Oh, we had a great time at this event. And I'm grateful that the temperatures were mild that day, however I DID get a nasty sunburn on my neck and arms.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy! So glad to hear you're having a great time in Maine! I look forward to catching up with you this week!

"Pink suits you, Ron, but I don't go a bundle on the hair."

HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAA! Like Dave shared in his comment, it looks just like COTTON CANDY!!!!

Yes, the gay rainbow flag is multi-colored to symbolize and celebrate diversity.

Aren't the colored coats on the poodles fabulous? I'm pretty sure they use simple food coloring to do it, as not to harm the dogs.

Always wonderful to see you, dear lady. Thanks a bunch for stopping by. I look forward to catching up with you this week!

    Happy Monday!

  9. Can I be an honorary Gay for a Day? Cuz it's so beautiful and colorful when there's a gay event. I love it! I normally laugh myself silly at regular poodles, lose my sh*t at colored ones, but the ones pictured are really cute! Hey, did you put your head on Sarah Jessica Parker, because that really looks like her.

p.s. Heat-hater here, too, but I think you knew that already.

  10. Howdy Rob~

Glad you enjoyed the photos. Yes, it ended up being a great event. And a lot of fun!

OMG...as you know, I hate being hot. But I realize I'm in the minority because most people love summer and the warmer weather. I can hardly believe I lived in Florida for 20 years!!!

"And I think you'd look great in that last outfit. But you probably shouldn't wear it in Antarctica."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I agree, I might scare the penguins!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Always great to see you!

    Oh, you're a sweetheart!

    (((( You )))))

Yes, I kinda had the feeling (just from your wonderful energy) that you embraced diverise lifestyles. And I bet your gay friends LOVE hanging out with you too!

While living in Florida, all of my straight female friends loved going to gay bars with me and my gay friends. And for the same reason you shared....they know how to have a good time.

Thank you for stopping by today. Always so nice read your comments. I look forward to catching up with you this week.

Yes, by ALL means! OMG...you would have had a blast at this event. It was down at Penn's Landing, along the Delaware River.

Aren't the colored poodles faaaaaaaaaabulous??? People were standing around them, snapping photos all day long.

"Hey, did you put your head on Sarah Jessica Parker, because that really looks like her."

    Bwhahahahahahhahahhaahahaha! HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup, I know you're a heat-hater too :) Wasn't it horrible two weeks ago? I thought I was going to MELT. But it hasn't been too-too bad lately. I can't wait for the Fall!

Thanks for stopping by, neighbor. Have a wonderful week!

  17. how deliciously adorable are y'all in that group photo? And what gay man or woman doesn't love a photo op? Am I right about this..? Sounds fun and looks like a great event. So happy that you didn't melt. That would have taken all the fun away - I totally understand. Even though I live in a city that is the summertime equivalent of the exhaust fan of Hell. If you know what I mean. Heat is what makes us TEXAN. Or something like that. Who knows, it freaking sucks. So glad you're back :) xoxo

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yes, you are SO right about that!

Yup...not only was our event a success, but we all had such a GREAT time. It was one BIG party! They truly did such an awesome job putting Gay Pride together. Bravo!

"Even though I live in a city that is the summertime equivalent of the exhaust fan of Hell. If you know what I mean. Heat is what makes us TEXAN. Or something like that. Who knows, it freaking sucks."

I know what you mean because having lived in Florida for 20 years, I know that Texas and Florida share the same humidity and heat - OY!

I hope that the temps are kind to ya. I tell ya; I HATED the humidity over there. So, that makes two + hubby, three(yah see; you aren't alone).

On the other hand, I LOVED the pics of Phila's gay pride!! That looked so fun, except for you that had to work. I wished that I could have experienced the event.
It looks like you have a great work group! I am glad that the biz was good.

Thanks for sharing these cheery shots and big hugs down to Love city xoxo

  23. ok, firstly turned on ms. ross, whom i adore....saw her this year on "O" course, and she is so gorgeous and a gramma too....and she sounds better than ever but this is about you, dawling so i won't go on... laughed and laughed over this one: you'd rather be stranded in Antarctica wearing only a THONG and BAREFOOT....hahahhahahahaha, i so relate as i lay here in a DARK room, fan blasting and it's already 88 @ noon IN THE HOUSE-about 100 outside :*(, feeling ill and nauseated...lord, never gonna make it thru this summer....but these pics are great, except the poor dyed poodles, is that OK for them? and when i saw the group shot, at first i thought it was you in the CENTER-imagine my surprise! he's a cutie, dear boy... anyway, of course, when i blew it up and put on my specs, i could see it was not you as you are the dignified, handsome gent on the end....gorgeous black women there as well. anyway, porta-potties, i suppose, are better than a ditch, you think?
much love, friend xoxoxox and glad to "see" you again and thanks for a little "aint no mountain woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" :)

  24. I don't think you need a dramatic gay chromosome to appreciate the wonder and beauty of "Dancing Queen." LOVE that song - one of my all-time faves!

The event looks like a lot of fun, and I'm glad you were spared that oppressive heat that you (and I) abhor.

Isn't it the PITS???? However, I think the worst humidity I've EVER experiences was while living in Japan. OMG....you could barely breathe, it was THAT bad.

You would have loved Gay Pride Day. It was down at Penn's Landing. It was the first time I had ever attended, and I couldn't believe how CROWDED it was. At certain points you couldn't even move, it was that CROWDED. Oh, but we had a BLAST!

OMG...don't you just LOVE Miss Ross? I saw her in person while I was living in NYC at the Westchester Premier Theater. One of my friends that was with me had drawn a picture of her and sent it backstage; asking if Miss Ross would autograph it. And guess what? She DID!!!!!

"you'd rather be stranded in Antarctica wearing only a THONG and BAREFOOT...."

Tee, hee! And it's the TRUTH. I HATE being hot!

  29. Ron, as much as you HATE being hot, I HATE being cold. It's esp. annoying in the summer to sit in a restaurant or at a theatre and have to wear a freaking coat because the air is turned to like 55 degrees! Went to see 'Music Man' Friday night and thought I was going to become an iceberg.

And WTH are you wearing in that photoshop? A kiddie pool??

  31. Mostly I'm likin' the Gucci Guilty designer t's. Those are cool! Though I'm thinking black in that sun/heat=not so cool.

I feel bad for the porta-pottie victims. And I'm sad for the poodles, though I'll give that the dreds are .... different?
I adore that folks feel they can just be as zany and as conservative as they feel. I get a bit piffy when that's stepped on by the general public period.
I mean, celebrate all that you ARE.

I'm glad the heat backed off for the event. I'm pretty sure you're not the only one who'da melted had it been hotter and more humid.
I mean, look at the layers the fashion designer donned--holy cow.....you'da been scraping him off the stage.
I do hope he didn't go in that porta-pottie....

It was very cool because there were people there of ALL diversities. Gay, straight, bi, transgenders, etc. All celebrating equality together!

The heat wasn't too bad for the first few hours, however it got a bit hot around 3-4 o'clock. Luckily, we had a tent to go under when we got hot, and LOTS of water to drink!

...And that photo of you all in your booth is so sweet! You all look like you could be in an Eddie Bauer ad - beautimous maxximous! ;o)

...Those johnny-on-the-spots are the worst in the summertime! Well actually, they're bad anytime of the year... Nasty. :o\ I once saw a group of people roll someone they knew in a porta potty at a festival. They rocked it until it fell over and it rolled several times with her in it, it was disgusting! I felt so sorry for that poor woman who had to crawl out of that thing when it stopped, I guess they thought it would be funny. I would think that she never spoke to them again after that...

...I'm glad to hear that you had a wonderful time and that you survived the heat! It is a glorious 67 degrees here with the sun making its debut touched by a light breeze - beautiful morning. :o)

...And btw, any chance that we'll get to see your Diana Ross lip-syncing routine of 'Ain’t No Mountain High Enough'? I think that would be a fabulous thing to do for your ever so faithful peeps here my friend. *wink*wink*nudge*nudge* ;o)

  59. ahahahh! i was all over the poodles until i saw your final photo, it was brilliant! i had fun checking it out, n truly for a moment thought it was really you in it! awesome photoshop you did there! you would have looked so adorable in the real thing i bet. ;) we never had any such events held at our place, probably because gay or lesbian are still very much unapproved around here. no matter how open-minded some of us are, or how much we are able to accept them as part of the society. i guess it must have been difficult being different.

    Tee, hee....aren't I silly man? I just couldn't resist!

I actually didn't photoshop the image, I made it on Face In Hole. It's so much FUN!

Yes, I understand. It's kinda the same way here in certain places, however it's gotten much more acceptable throughout the times. Yet, there are those who still have difficultly with it.

    Oh well....

Always great to see you, Levain. Thanks so much for stopping by!
