Saturday afternoon, I was chatting with one of my favorite co-workers about how I was in the mood to rent a good film that night and asked her if she had any suggestions. For some reason, we got on the topic of thrillers and she mentioned one of the best psychological thriller films from the 80’s. Fatal Attraction. I LOVE psychological thrillers! So, after work, I popped into my local video store and rented it. As I sat there that evening, nervously munching on Tostitos and hummus, I immediately recalled how I felt when I first saw the film. Scared. Shitless. I had almost forgotten what an awesome film it is, with stellar performances by Michael Douglas, Glenn Close, and the exquisitely beautiful Anne Archer. I’m pretty sure after this film was released, infidelity throughout the world dropped to 0% the following ten years. The thought of having a one night stand with someone like Glenn Close’s psychotic character, Alex, had every man thinking twice about grazing from the pasture; poking.

The thing about this film which I find sheer brilliance, is that it makes you want to jump into the screen; grabbing hold of Alex and throwing her out of 50-story building window, just to get her the HELL out of his life. I remember watching it on TV with my father once, as he restrained himself from reaching inside the television set and strangling her with 55 yards of dental floss. Fatal Attraction makes its viewers feel totally out of control, because no matter how nicely Michael Douglas’s character, Dan, tells Alex that it’s over….she keeps coming back like a painful case of herpes. The ending, which finally gives the audience a sense of relief was not the ending that was originally written. Did you know that? I discovered this piece of trivia while watching the DVD special features.

 *more is explained here

The original ending was this: “Alex Forrest was originally scripted to commit suicide at the end of the movie by slashing her throat. Her plan was to make it look as if Dan had murdered her, for which he would be arrested. Although Beth (Dan’s wife) is shown to possibly have a way to free him when finding a revealing tape that Alex had sent him and taking it to the police, test audiences did not respond well.” It was said, that while testing the film in various cities, the original ending had audiences leaving the theater unsatisfied. Months later, they reshot the ending to what it is now. After viewing the complete original ending, I gotta say….I liked it better because it was less expected, yet still left me with a sense of satisfaction. Also, it was much less violent. Oh well, either way it was a faaaaaaaabulous film.

So, if you’re looking to watch a great thriller, revisit Fatal Attraction. And for heaven sake, PLEASE remember the moral of this story….. It ain’t worth having one night of hot sex on a kitchen sink.

Poor innocent bunny rabbit!

and I'm so glad you think Ann is beautiful, so do I
I think she's been under appreciated her entire career

  3. I felt sorrier for the rabbit than I did for Michael Douglas. Glenn Close was FABULOUS as a crazy bitch. She actually came very close to Joan Crawford crazy, IMO. You had to cheer when Anne shot her ass. Thanks for reminding me about a GREAT movie!

  4. Great post, Ron. You may not believe this, but I'm one of the few poor souls who has never seen this film. I kept meaning to, but I never got around to it. Now, thanks to you, I'll stock up on Tostitos and hummus and Netflix this film into my life.

  5. I remember going through all sorts of emotion while watching this film but it wasso long ago I can't remember how it ended. Whatever, I'm glad they changed it from the original ... I don't fancy that one at all. Oh well, that's another visit to the hire shop, you've got me going now. Enjoyed The Tourist by the way, thanks for the recommendation. Have an angst free week.

  6. What a film that was! I always find psychological thrillers the most scary of films.

If we want to keep infidelity down this film should go on release annually!

    " SCARY STUFF!"

    HA! Yooooooooooooooooou said it!

Watching it again after all these years, I STILL got scared. Glenn Close is so flawlessly psychotic in this movie! Just the look in her eyes gives me the creeps!

Isn't the Alex Barbie doll faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabulous?? When I saw it online, I almost died!

"one of my all time favorite lines comes from this movie ... "I will not be ignored"
    priceless."

Yes! Yes! Yes! OMG, it gave me CREEPS when she said that!!!!! The DVD special features shows her rehearsing for that scene with Michael Douglas. And even in rehearsals it was SCARY.

"and I'm so glad you think Ann is beautiful, so do I
I think she's been under appreciated her entire career."

THANK YOU!!!! I think the same thing - you hardly ever see her in anything, yet she's a brilliant actress. And absolutely beautiful and sexy.

Thanks for stopping by, dear lady. Have a grrrrreat week!

X to you and the gang!

"I felt sorrier for the rabbit than I did for Michael Douglas."

OMG...me too! I totally forgot about that scene until I saw again. Anne Archer said that it was one the hardest scenes for her to do in the movie.

"Glenn Close was FABULOUS as a crazy bitch. She actually came very close to Joan Crawford crazy, IMO."

HAHHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA! I never thought of that, but you're absolutely right....she does remind you of Joan Crawford crazy!

Holy cow, when Anne finally shot her....I CHEERED!!!!!!

The original ending is good too, just not as violent.

Thanks for stopping by, Sis. Have a great Monday and week!

  12. Good Morning Valerie~

"I remember going through all sorts of emotion while watching this film but it wasso long ago I can't remember how it ended."

The wife (Anne Archer) shoots Alex in the bathtub. The original ending was much less violent, but I found it very satisfying and conclusive. However, the test screening audiences didn't like it.

Anne Archer and Glenn Close both fought like crazy to NOT change the original ending, but finally agreed.

So glad you enjoyed The Tourist! Funny, because just this past weekend I was thinking about you and wondering if you watched it yet. Wasn't it great?

Thank you for stopping by, dear lady. Have a wonderful week!

Meeeeeeeeeeeeeee too! I'm not much for thrillers with a lot violence, I much prefer movies that play with your head. And this one DOES!

"If we want to keep infidelity down this film should go on release annually!"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You said it! Perhaps it should be 'required veiwing' to all couples!!!

  17. That was a very disturbing movie to me. I think one of the only ones that scared me worse was Hand That Rocks The Cradle I think was what it was called with Rebecca DeMorney? That was freaky too. And yeah, I wanted to cheer when she got shot too. She played that character flawlessly!

Hope you have a wonderful week!

Yes, it was a VERY disturbing movie to say the least. But, I loved it - tee, hee!

Ooooo...oooooo....yes! The Hand That Rocks The Cradle was another fabulously scary and suspensive movie, I agree!!!! Rebecca DeMorney was flawless in that role! Scared the hell out of me!

Yes, don't ya still love Glenn Close? I admire how she takes breaks from movie-making to work onstage. LOVED her in Sunset Boulevard!!! Very diverse actress!

Yes, I didn't know about the original ending either, until I watch DVD special features.

  21. Even though peeps, especially pink ones, probably deserve a slow painful death....that doll/bunny picture is really quite disturbing. *shudders*

I, too, LOVED Fatal Attraction. We saw it in the theater forever ago and got there a little late and had to sit wayyyy down in front. Exta horror being so close to the craziness.

Glenn Close is a fabulous actress, one of my very favorite movies is Dangerous Liasons and she rocked that part too!
But if you've got the lovely, sweet, sensuous Beth at home should you ever go with a chick like Alex? NO, not ever... dammit!!!

Interesting tidbit about the alternate ending.

    I like Disney.
    LOTS.
Rather liked Cars, if you must know.

    And Nemo.

    Yes, I know.....LOL W-U-S-S.

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA! That was HILARIOUS! And knowing my utter distain for peeps (especially pink ones), you know how I feel. However, you're right...the picture is quite disturbing. Especially the dolls EYES!!! But, I still found it so clever - tee, hee!

Yes, I too saw Fatal Attraction in the theater the first time. I saw it with a married couple that I use to be friends with when I lived in Florida.

Isn't Glenn Close the BOMB? So diverse! Yup...Dangerous Liasons is SUCH an awesome film and she was pretty dang scary in that one too! LOVED the costumes and time period.

"But if you've got the lovely, sweet, sensuous Beth at home should you ever go with a chick like Alex? NO, not ever... dammit!!!"

Yes, I think you mean Cape Fear with Robert De Niro. LOOOOOOOOOOVED that one too! What can I tell ya....I'm a FREAK!

    "I like Disney.

Meeeeee too! And on the other end of the spectrum I like humorous movies too.

    I LOVED Toy Story!!!!

No, you're not a W-U-S-S....you just don't like scary movies.

I love Glenn Close too! She was nominated for best actress in this film, but didn't win :(

Infact, Fatal Attraction was nominated for MANY awards that year, but didn't win. I think it was because of the topic. Anyway, I LOVED it!

  28. Have you seen the movie "Unfaithful" with Richard Gere and Diane Lane? How do you think it compares? If you haven't seen it, and thus can't answer my question, I challenge you to rent Unfaithful and report back. Similar concept..but I liked it better for reasons that I can't explain other than it's more dramatic when the wife cheats!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Totally in agreement - way at the top of the list of spectacular films from the 1980s. I'm usually too nervous to sit through a thriller, but I've seen this one several times.

I was just thinking about an older movie today on the drive home. I think it was based on a Grisham book and the film was called Runaway Jury with John Cusak. Not really a comparison with FA, but a curious story that I remember enjoying on film. I remembered it because I had jury duty today in criminal court and hallelujah thank the good Lord, was not selected.

Hope you have a mahvelous week! xoxo ~diane

  30. Wow! I never knew about the alternative ending. But after seeing it I still prefer the final cut of the film. Glenn Close was absolutely psychotic in the film. From scene one she had that bizarre off-kilter air about her that gave me the heebie jeebies. One look in her eyes and you knew that she was a ten-pin short of a full rack.

I can't count how many times I've seen the "flick the lights off and on" scene mocked and parodied. Heck, even Family Guy got in on the action recently. Heh...

Yes! Yes! Yes! I have seen that movie and LOVE it! In fact, I've re-rented it several times! I'm a HUGE Diane Lane fan and she was awesome in that movie. So was Gere.

And agree...it is (for some reason) more dramatic when the wife cheats. I think it may be because it's not expected as much, but it does happen.

Thanks so much for stopping by and reminding of yet, another brilliant suspense/thriller film!

Hope you had a great Monday and wonderful week!

  33. Hi Diane~

"I'm usually too nervous to sit through a thriller, but I've seen this one several times."

HA! I know what you mean because it DRAWS you in so fast, and then takes you on a rollercoaster ride that you're scared of, but want to ride it anyway!

No, I've not seen Runaway Jury, but I love movies that have anything to do with law and courtroom drama! And I really like John Cusak. And also his sister!

I'll look for it in the video store next time I'm there, so thanks for the recommendation!

HALLEUJAH! You weren't selected for jury duty....yaaaaaaaay! I've been called in several times, but was able to get out of it because I'm an independent contractor - whew!

Yes, many prefer the final cut, so you're not alone!!!!

"Glenn Close was absolutely psychotic in the film. From scene one she had that bizarre off-kilter air about her that gave me the heebie jeebies. One look in her eyes and you knew that she was a ten-pin short of a full rack."

YES! YES! YES! In fact, Saturday night while I was watching it again, she gave a "look" to a guy in her first scene and I thought the SAME THING....heebie jeebies BIG TIME! I had chills!

Glenn Close was freaking amazing in that role. And to think that they were NOT going to even consider her for the part, blows me away.

"I can't count how many times I've seen the "flick the lights off and on" scene mocked and parodied. Heck, even Family Guy got in on the action recently."

HA! And it's funny you mentioned that scene, because in the DVD special features they explained how they were originally going to shoot that scene (with Glenn Close at the opera), but then changed it to what it was. Which was soooooooooooo much better!

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Hope you had a great Monday. Have a FAB week!
