Post updates by email:

Yesterday, I celebrated my 56th birthday, but the strange part about it is that I actually forgot it was by birthday until I checked my emails in the morning and discovered a dear friend of mine had sent me a Happy Birthday wish.

DUH!

And I immediately thought to myself, “How the hell could you forget your own birthday, Ron?”

But then I remembered a time when I was a kid and my mother said something to the effect, “The older you get the less birthdays seem important.” However, at the time I thought she was NUTS because as a kid, you can’t WAIT until your birthday arrives so you can get birthday cards, a birthday cake, and TONS of presents.

I also remembered a time when I was a kid and my mother had forgotten her birthday, which I thought was totally INSANE because how could ANYONE forget their birthday????

Yet, here I was….forgetting my birthday too!

I pondered this throughout the day and began to wonder if why we get to the point where we forget our birthdays is because, as my mother shared, they just don’t seem so important anymore.

But WHY do they don’t seem so important anymore?

Could it be because of time?

Have you ever noticed how as we getting older, the more time seems to speed up?

As a kid, things like, waiting for our birthday, Christmas, summer vacation, or waiting to be old enough to get our driver’s license seemed to take an ETERNITY.

As kids, we seem to PUSH time away from us.

Yet, as adults, we seem to PULL time toward us.

So, the older we get….time seems to get closer.

And faster.

And shorter.

Therefore, we lose track of time.

Therefore, lose track of our birthdays.

Therefore, lose track of their importance.

Which is a good thing.

Which is why I should continue to forget my birthdays…..

  1. Ooooooh Ron, belated birthday greetings. I wish I could forget my birthday. I hope you had a happy day. Don't worry about forgetting, there will come a time when you actually look forward to the next birthday ... and feel proud that you're still around to enjoy it.... hahahahahaa. You must have heard the oldies bragging about their age! However, that is in the future.... you've got a long, long wait! In the meantime, try the memory jogger on Yahoo or something... it's called a calender..................... rushing out to avoid a kick up the backside. Have a nice day x

  2. I'd love to forget about my birthday, but I don't think my kids will ever let me. Here's my weird thing - I can NEVER remember how old I am.....I have to literally go, "Ok, it's 2011, I was born in 1963, let's see if I can subtract that in my head...." OR I just LIE!

However..........Happy Birthday, Ron! Hope you ate cake!

  3. Happiest of birthdays to you, Ron!

I'm pulling time toward me as hard as I can pull. I am more satisfied with my life the older I get, but still dont want my body to show signs of aging. If only I could stay in a 30 year old body and have the mindset, confidence, and security that the older years bring.

    Hope your week is beautiful.

  4. Happy birthday! It is so true. The older we get, the faster time seems to go by. It drives me crazy. This is why I feel like I need to pack so much in all the time. Which then makes time feel like it's going by faster. It's an endless cycle.
Been sick all weekend so fell asleep before I could call on Sat. night. Will try you this week.

  6. First of all: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RON!! And I wish you many more! You make so many great observations in this post. I especially enjoyed your kid's-eye view of time--Christmas always took forever to get here and now I groan and say, "ugh, it's the freaking holidays again?!?" Still, I believe you're a special person, so your birthday is a special day. It's great to lose track of time, but don't forget to party your ass off! Have a great week, buddy!

  7. Ha ha! Oh Ron that is so funny. I've never forgotten my birthday and I'm a lot older than you. Mind you, I have forgotten other people's :)

You're so right about time speeding up as you get older. I liken it to a ball rolling down a hill, picking up speed as it goes.

HA! You're right, because my mother is now saying the same thing!

    Bwhahahahahhhhahhahahahahha!

Okay, I will. But no kick in the backside, dear lady, because that was HILARIOUS!

OMG! OMG! OMG! I CANNOT believe you just said that because about a month ago I actually had to take a calculator and subtract 1955 from 2011 - I KID YOU NOT!!!!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one!!!!!!

    LOVE IT! That was FLAWLESS!!!!!

But I know what you mean because I too feel more satisfied with my life the older I get. I feel more 'relaxed' about it.

I think the 'key' in getting older is to stay young 'mentally'....and then use A LOT anti-aging cream!!!!

    Bwhahahahahahahhahaha!

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl! So glad to see you. I miss ya in blogland! Hope all is going well.

    So true! So true!

The thing that aging is teaching me the most is to try and live in the moment. I don't always do it, mind you. But when I do, I feel much more relaxed and 'in the moment.'

So sorry to hear that you're sick :( One of girls I work with is sick too. In fact, it was just this past weekend when she ended up getting a very bad cold.

You take care, my friend. And we'll talk eventually, no worries.

  17. "Too old to get laid"?? What is this nonsense you're spewing, Ron? I think your advanced age has caught up with you and caused dementia!!!

Having said that...happy birthday, my friend!

I know it's Monday and you're probably working (since you forgot it was your birthday), but I hope you have a great day! A wise friend once told me, no matter how old you get, your birthday is always a special day and should be treated as one. I have since never failed to take her advice to heart myself.

  19. Well Ray,
Another day of age. Happy birthday Old Man. I hope your day was full of light and love. I wish for you comfort and joy. I know that we all grow and we all age yet that is the body that contains the soul, that experiences the rigors of age. Our soul always stays young and in the now. So as you stand and wait for the pee to start and when you discover that air slips more frequently from you ass just know that this is not what you are. You are the warm breeze, the cloud that brings the rainbow you are the friend that is always there. I wish you a Happy Birthday.

  22. I think birthdays are really for the others in our life. For some reason, it helps all of us "out there" to have a day to attribute to somebody special. So, for you, dear friend Ron, a chance to say "thanks" for all the light and joy you bring to all of us with your musings and postings and bitchings and insightful commentary on all things living. You are a blessing to us all. Kudos on your big day. Again. EFH

It's true, time does seem to speed up as we get older. Perhaps it does because as we get older we get more wrapped up in life and get busier. I know I have. And the funny thing about it is that I still feel like a little girl.

Happy birthday dearest wonderful fantastical spectacular incredible Ron, Happy Birthday to YOU! And many more....

I knew it was sometime during Libra. :)

I know some who don't give their birthday much thought, but can I just tell ya, I'm not one of them!! OH NO, I want the full fanfare, whenever possible. Ron actually took the day off from work last year to spend with me (because he knows I am the sweet pumpkin fairy princess... or however it was he addressed my card one year...ha!) and we went over to Philly and up onto the observation platform of City Hall. If he's unable to spend the whole day with me, we atleast do dinner out. If I'm by myself I'll usually go and do a little Christmas shopping but YES I tell people it's my day while I'm out there.

11/23 is the date! Remember it! Write it down! That's NOVEMBER 23rd, Sagittarian extraordinaire! WooHooooo! hehe

So whether you remember your birthday and celebrate or not, just know that you are loved. And many good wishes are coming your way for a year of happy and healthy. ENJOY!

Oh, how WONDERFUL! Isn't it something how once you get up to the observation deck of City Hall, you realize how HIGH up it is? Yet, looking at it from down below, it doesn't look all that high up. I took a friend up there who was visiting me from Florida and she FREAKED!!!!

Yes! I think you're right because I read in one of Bloggers forums that certain versions of IE are not compatible with Blogger, which is absolutely ridiculous, isn't it? I've also notice that those who use Mac computers don't have problem leaving comments because they use Safari.
