Sometimes when I get mad after I‘ve had enough, I can be quite the Tasmanian Devil.

I’m not one of those cool people who is always in control of my emotions. Therefore, sometimes when I get pissed.…you would never mistake me for being subtle.

It SHOWS when I’m really mad.

That’s not always the most polite way to handle things, I know, but I’ve accepted this about myself because sometimes you just have to get mad to make point - when nothing else works.

Last Thursday afternoon, I had an encounter at a Starbucks that would have tested even the patience of both Mother Theresa and Mahatma Gandhi.

Allow me to say, that this particular Starbucks is the most mismanaged and disorganized store I have ever been to. The staff is BEYOND slow, the drink orders are always getting mixed up, the condiment stand is always out of condiments, and the store in general has a very chaotic feel to it. Customers are always complaining. I myself have called Starbucks Corporate and complained about the service in this store.

I’ve been to MANY Starbucks in my life, yet I have never experienced one that should be rated X.

For X-tra HORRIBLE.

Yes, I patronize this particular Starbucks out of my own free-will, but ONLY because it’s convenient to where I work, so I really shouldn’t bitch. I should just go to another Starbucks during my breaks. But hey, I needed something to blog about, so why not VENT?

The first thing that annoyed me was when I was ordering my coffee and oatmeal raisin cookie, the cashier ABSENTMINDEDLY rang up the order of the customer standing next to me on MY debt card. And I never noticed it until after she had already charged me. I thought the total was a bit high, but since Starbucks is constantly raising their prices, I didn’t think anything about it until I looked at my receipt and saw an extra coffee drink added. And when I brought this to the cashiers attention, she said, “Oooops….I’m sorry, but there’s nothing I can do about it. I already charged your debt card.”

So, rather than cause a scene (because I truly wanted to) I decided to let it go and treat the person standing next to me to their coffee for the day.

Then, after waiting FIVE minutes to get my drink, I had to ask, “Excuse me, but where is my coffee?”

The cashier replied, “Oooops….sorry, but I guess the barista didn’t hear me order it.”

So, she had to RE-order it.

(another FIVE minutes past)

When I finally got my coffee, I said, “And what about my oatmeal cookie?”

She said, “Oooops….I totally forgot about it.”

Well, by this time I was FUMING. You could literally see steam coming out of my ears and a white foam forming on my lips.

I FREAKED OUT and decided it was time to cause a SCENE.

I suddenly held up both my hands and yelled, “ HOLD IT! HOLD IT! TIME OUT! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE???? First, you charge another customers order to MY debt card. THEN, you forget my coffee. THEN, you forget my cookie. Would someone please tell me what is going on here, BECAUSE I’M OVER IT!!!!”

*you could hear a pin drop*

This was when the barista walked over and said, “I’m sorry for the hold up, but I didn’t hear the cashier place your order.”

I said, “This is not the first time that this has happened to me. As a matter of fact, it happens a lot….NOW GET ME MY OATMEAL COOKIE!”

The barista RAN to get my cookie and when she handed it to me, I SNAPPED it out of her hand like mouse trap and shouted, “THE SERVICE IN THIS PLACE SUCKS!”

Just then, all the customers standing in line Boo’d me, saying, “Why don’t you try being more patient, sir?”

It was then that I spun around and snarled, “PATIENT? I’ll have you know that I’m on a 15 minute break and it took me an HOUR to get this order - AND MIND YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS!”

*more Boo’s*

Well, let’s just say that the next day when I went into Starbucks and placed my coffee and oatmeal cookie order….

I got it in less than a minute. And for F-R-E-E.

See…..sometimes you just gotta be a Tasmanian Devil!

  1. Good morning Ronnie,

OMG... I think that the Starbucks place needed a good swift kick for that accumulated bad service. You have my complete sympathy.

Maybe, one loud voice like yours will make them wake up a bit. This is not a rehearsal, people; you are in business and are supposed to be professionals!!
That was nice with all this problem with the debit card that one more coffee was an unexpected treat for someone else.

You see human nature; booing you without even trying to understand the whole story? They don't care; you are slowing the line and so they just boo and put you down in their books as a crank.

Well, you got a free cookie the next day!

Thanks for sharing, dear. We have Starbucks in Paris but I rarely go there.

Have a great Monday ! xo

  2. Bwahahahaha! I am so sorry Ron....I had to laugh!!! This is SO something I would do. Totally!!! I can actually see myself shouting! My daughter has walked out of stores many a time when my temper got the best of me. But, you are correct. Sometimes you just HAVE to be the Tasmanian Devil!!! Good for you...speaking up for yourself! Go YOU!! Glad you got them all straightened out!!

  4. "I decided to let it go and treat the person standing next to me to their coffee for the day."

the customer didn't reimburse you? you paid, that's a date. they owe you something. ha!

now i can't blame you in the least. forgetting coffee is one thing, but forgetting to give you your cookie is flat out wrong. that's why the world has gone made. people are forgetting to pass off on the cookie.

glad they got it right the next time.

  5. She could have reimbursed you on the spot... don't they even know how to do THAT? I would have reacted exactly the same way. No, I don't blame you for having a go ... it's a serious crime to mess up orders, punishable by a sudden attack of unconsciousness. I'm surprised you still go there. Does Starbucks have the monopoly in the States? We have them here, even in my remote area, but I tried it once and won't patronise them again.

  6. You were boo'd??? Did I read that right? OMG.
Customer service in alot of places has gone straight to hell! For the prices of things, especially Starbucks, we should be getting excellent service!
The Starbucks I go to is in a bookstore so one would have to figure that things run a little slower in there because people are hanging out to read, have lunch, etc. but some of the baristas at mine don't seem like they really try to get the line moving at all. And it's those same couple of ones who don't make the one drink I get very well either. It is hard to make in some ways because I get it a little different from maybe how they were taught, but a few of the employees seem to have it figured out fine and I've asked other employees to make it that way and either they won't or they can't get it. So now I only order it when certain people work. LOL Yeah... okay... that does sound prissy, doesn't it. ;) But those drinks are alot of money and they say you can have it your way, right. I don't like to return it although on a couple of occasions I have asked that it be re-made.
As for the wrong charge. They could have absolutely given you a refund! If not on your debit card, then they could have given you cash back OR atleast a Starbucks card loaded with the amount of the coffee you paid for to use at another time. I might not have caused a scene but I would have definitely asked to speak to the manager and they would have taken care of it. It's certainly nice to pay for someone's coffee but not because of that reason.

Sheesh, now when I go for my hot cuppa later I'm going to think of this post. Hope I don't start feeling snarky. haha!

    Have a great day, Ron!

  7. LOL Ron.......you are brave......if it were me, I would have been too embarrassed to go to that Starbucks again! Good for you and I'm so glad you got your order for free.

I lament on a continual basis about the LACK OF SERVICE in America these days. I think that's the biggest change - not morals, not the economy, not addictions, not poor parenting - just LACK OF SERVICE. Businesses don't seem to give a crap about the customer anymore. As a consumer, it's SO DAMN FRUSTRATING!

And it's amazing to me that the person you accidentally bought the coffee for didn't pay you back. That's as rude as the Starbucks employees!

  8. *Standing Ovation*

Doesn't it just annoy you to high hell when people couldn't care less? I have said so many times that it wouldn't do for me to be a manager in any of these fast food places. I would have fired everyone and would be working in the place ALONE!

You are a lot like me, I think. I keep my cool for a long time... but when my gasket blows, it BLOWS. And God help anyone standing around when it does!

Hope you have a wonderful Monday, Ron.

Hahaha "Mohammad Gandhi" I have known a few with that name :-)

Free ? Wait one darn second. You already got charged for the other person's order !

I am so sorry. You know just this morning, I was on the bus passing by my favourite Starbucks and thinking to my self - "Oh there's my favourite Starbucks"
Even when there is one closer to my place I like this particular location.

Alright you devil... see you around. And be nice today !

  10. that starbucks is the absolute WORST I have ever been to! OMG.

I like the one on Broad and Pine, but that is out of your way between home and work. One time the guy forgot to toast my bagel and he gave me a stack of free drink cards. It's like the polar opposite of that one over there near your work. Ugh.

  11. ...Ha! And I'm almost certain that the spit on your cookie was free too...he,he,he ;o)

...I don't blame you for going off the deep end, it needed to be done and no doubt from now on you should be getting top notch service - sans spit. I would've just gone on to another Starbucks, but then that is just me. I'll fill out their customer opinion cards, voice my opinion to the manager and contact the corporate office but if things don't really change then I pretty much move on to the next locale. I'm spineless like that. *giggle* :o)

...I tip my hat to you my dear! You're one of the movers & shakers that make this world a better place. Now I'm off to YouTube to find the security video of a man having a meltdown in a Philly Starbucks...*giggle*snort* I'm kidding, I'm kidding! ;o)

HAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA! Thank you for the correction! And I should be ashamed of myself because Gandhi and I were born on the SAME day - October 2nd.

"Free ? Wait one darn second. You already got charged for the other person's order !"

HA! You're right....so technically I should have gotten TWO for free!

" I was on the bus passing by my favourite Starbucks and thinking to my self - "Oh there's my favourite Starbucks"

Me too. I really like to go to one particular Starbucks by my house because it's truly one of the best run stores in this city. However, the one I'm referring to in this post, is right next door to my work. :(

100% agreed! And the service there just keeps getting worse and worse. They also keep changing employees because nobody wants to work there. It's one of the worst Starbucks I've ever been to.

"You see human nature; booing you without even trying to understand the whole story?"

I really don't think the people in line new the whole story until I FREAKED. So, it looked as though I was being unreasonable. I actually LAUGHED about them booing me afterwards because it was quite funny!

  20. You go, Ron! Customer service and people with more than 2 brain cells to rub together are damn near dead! I'd think in this economy, with so many folks out of work, Starbucks (and many others) could hire baristas that appreciate a paying job. Maybe if more customers would go ballistic, service would improve.

Also, the idiots "booing" you, I willing to bet if they'd been screwed around with like you, they'd be screaming their heads off.

I was raised to give 150% of myself to my job and the service I provide.

"And it's amazing to me that the person you accidentally bought the coffee for didn't pay you back. That's as rude as the Starbucks employees!"

And I agree. I use to be a manager but couldn't take it because of the losey work ethics that MANY employees have. They simply don't care. To them, it's just a job.

"Customer service in alot of places has gone straight to hell! For the prices of things, especially Starbucks, we should be getting excellent service!"

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!! And with the constant price increases in Starbucks, they should do everything in their power to give the BEST customer service. To be completely honest though, I DO usually get great customer service in most Starbucks.

"So now I only order it when certain people work. LOL Yeah... okay... that does sound prissy, doesn't it. ;)"

No, I don't think that sounds prissy at all! Not with the HIGH prices you pay for one of their speciality drinks.

"They could have absolutely given you a refund! If not on your debit card, then they could have given you cash back OR atleast a Starbucks card loaded with the amount of the coffee you paid for to use at another time. Good for you for expressing the customer's opinion. You're paying top dollar for your refreshment. 39. BOO for that Starbucks for forcing you to make a scene in order to get SUBstandard service. I'd have been pissed too! I bet that's the same one that I got that awful coffee at while I was up there. I was about a block or so past your work on the same side of the street as your store if you went out that exit closest to your department and turned left. It tasted BURNED and I still think that was why I got sick that night. AND they were SLOW....

Bravo to you for standing up for yourself. Sometime the squeaky wheel does get the oil!

  40. You were so right to loose it, Ron. We all have jobs and we all have to do what we have to do to serve our clientele. So we deserve the same when on the other side. If you pay, you get the stuff. Point. With a smile and in timely manner. I am the kindest person but do sometimes loose too it if I get bad service - which can unfortunately happen quite often in France.

  41. How funny. I take it this is the Starbucks we had coffee at in Macy's? I haven't had that bad of service in a while but I can totally understand how you lost it. I was really hoping that you were going to say that all the people started cheering for you. It boggles the mind how customer service has totally gone done the toilet. You would think with jobs so hard to come by these people working would be on their toes. You'll just have to see if things get better after a week's time.

  42. Hey there Meleah~

    "I'm glad you flipped out"

    HA! Aren't I a little devil?

Yes, hooray for the FREE coffee and cookie the next day! And I TOTALLY enjoyed them too :)

Thanks for stopping by, girl. Hope you had great Monday and a awesome week ahead!

    HA! Thanks, my friend.

"I bet that's the same one that I got that awful coffee at while I was up there."

YES!!!! That IS the one you went to and got that awful tasting coffee. And I remember how sick you got after that!

    "AND they were SLOW...."

    THANK YOU!!!!!!
"Bravo to you for standing up for yourself. Sometime the squeaky wheel does get the oil!"

Yup...sometimes you just gotta SQUEAK....really LOUD - HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear friend! Hope you had a SUPA' Monday. Enjoy your week!

"We all have jobs and we all have to do what we have to do to serve our clientele. So we deserve the same when on the other side."

Thank you. My sentiments exactly! Honestly, I (and I'm sure you do too) work very hard at giving the best service we can in our jobs.

" I am the kindest person but do sometimes loose too it if I get bad service - which can unfortunately happen quite often in France."

And I don't blame you for loosing it either. I mean sometimes we have to.

Thank you so much for stopping by, beautiful lady. Hope you had a lovely day and week ahead of you!

  45. Hey Babs~

"I can't believe the customers boo'd you! Here they would have applauded you for having the courage to complain - loudly :) I am also very surprised that the person who's coffee you paid for didn't give you the money!"

Well, I don't think the customers that were standing in that line were aware of what went on during my transaction, until I YELLED. So, to them....I guessed it seemed as though I was being impatient and rude. But still, they should have minded their own business - HA!

And the person DID actually offer to pay me back for the coffee that was charged to my debt card, however I decided to just treat them to their coffee that day.

"Some places are just run badly, with little to no service."

You said it! And this place is one of them.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a terrific week!

    YUP...that's the one!!!!

" I was really hoping that you were going to say that all the people started cheering for you."

    No....hardly. Instead I got BOO'd! Tee, hee!

" It boggles the mind how customer service has totally gone done the toilet. You would think with jobs so hard to come by these people working would be on their toes."

Yes, you would think so, wouldn't you? With the economy and job situation that is current, you would think that shop owners and their employees would be working EXTRA hard to be special.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend! Hope you had grrrrreat weekend and week ahead of you!

  48. Good evening Linda~

"and the use of the word "subtle" just never struck me as you...

actors do not strike me as the subtle type but rather taz like!"

HAHAHAHAHAHA! No...I'm anything BUT subtle. And you're right...most actors are not the subtle type, but rather TAZ like.

    DRAMA QUEENS!

"btw where is your French press and the you could boycott them? "

Oh yes, I still use my French press ( I LOVE IT!), in the mornings. However, when I take a break at work, I really enjoy running over to SB for a cup.

" one time i left a cup overnight but hadn't finished it....YUCK'!!!!!!!!!!! after that I gave them up! :) what is all that OIL for?"

HA! Yes...SB coffee is VERY strong and oily! I know MANY people who can't stand it. Yet, I love it because I like my coffee STRONG and FIERCE.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, dear friend! Hope you're enjoying a wonderful start to your week!

  57. HA HA! I am the exact opposite, I take it when things go wrong instead of speaking up. I need to learn a bit from you! Free coffee - BOOYAAAA!!!!!

I'm not in to starbucks that much... I am a dunkin donuts iced coffee with double pumpkin and cream person myself ... but starbucks will do if I need to go. America loves starbucks... I think it is just "ok."

  58. Hey there Katherine~

    "Free coffee - BOOYAAAA!!!!!"

BOOYAAAAA!!!!! And you have no idea how MUCH I enjoyed that FREE coffee AND cookie!!!!

Yes, I can totally understand your not being into Starbucks, because I know MANY people who feel that way. A lot of people simply don't like the taste of their coffee. It's some STRONG stuff!

I too enjoy Dunkin' Donuts. Not only do I like their coffee, but also their bagels with cream cheese.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're having a wonderful week!

  59. Hey there Kathy~

    Aw...thank you, girl.

"Not only because you let them have it where they needed it, but because you freaking went back again. You are a brave, brave man."

Well, not brave...just too damn lazy to walk to another Starbucks - HA!

" I feel like your outburst wasn't just for YOU, but for all of us. For all the shit we've taken over the years from people who know nothing about good customer service."

Ya know, I don't think lousy customer service would bother me as much if I didn't try SO HARD to give the best customer service I can give in my own line of work. It pisses me off that people don't respect their jobs enough to take them seriously.

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor. Have a flawless weekend!

Aren't you LOVIN' this colder weather?????? :)

  60. Man! I thought you were going to say that the customers all cheered when you let loose because the place sucks so bad. Nevertheless, how awesome is it that your steam engine paid off - woo hoo!

  61. I feel the same way -- that I offer the best customer service I can in my line of work. You know what's wrong with us, don't you? We have the bar set too high and we expect everyone else to rise to it. It's a burden being so awesome, isn't it?

Yes, loving the cool weather. Hating the snow forecast. They expect 5-11" in the Lehigh Valley. I'm still in denial.

"You know what's wrong with us, don't you? We have the bar set too high and we expect everyone else to rise to it. It's a burden being so awesome, isn't it?"

You're absolutely right....I DO have the bar set too high and expect everyone else to rise to it.

And by God...they better, or I'll SCREAM!!!!!

    Bwhahahahahahahahahahhaha!

OMG...5-11" in Lehigh Valley?!?! WOW! Here in Philly, we're just getting a mixture of snowy rain.

    Keep warm, my friend!
