Post updates by email:

As most of you guys and gals already know from past posts, I sincerely love my job. And although I’ve been in the beauty industry for 26 years now, I can honestly say that it never gets old. As long as I can remember, I have always wanted to work in this industry. In fact, when I was a kid, I remember walking through the cosmetic department of Gimble Brothers with my mother, and intuitively feeling that one day I would be behind the counter doing the same thing.

I truly enjoy getting dressed up every day and going into my workplace, helping customers select fragrance, skincare and makeup. I also enjoy the interaction I have with people and getting to know them through conversation; building loyal and trusted relationships. I never feel as though my job is a chore, but rather something I enjoy doing and getting paid for it. But like with any job there comes challenges. And not only with the beauty industry itself, but also when it comes to certain customers who can make you so CRAZY at times, that your secret desire is to take your middle finger and place it about 6 inches in front of their face and say, “Can you read this sign?” Yet in all honesty, these customers give you something to laugh about too - especially when you have a blog and can use it as fodder.

Earlier this week, one of the ladies I work with sent me a You Tube video and asked that I watch it, telling her what I thought. Well, after watching the video TEN times and laughing so hard that I actually farted, I went back to work and told her it was the most STELLAR reenactment I had ever seen. Being in this industry, you eventually discover that no matter what state or country you live in, or what retail store you work at, there will always be those ‘stereotypical’ cosmetic customers that you must contend with.

The video that I am about to share with you is a PERFECT example of several of these customers - and ones that I have actually waited on myself – swear to god! It was created by a brilliantly talented young lady named, Kaleena Massaker, who I would love to meet one day and do a comedy show together. Kaleena should be on Saturday Night Live, because she’s THAT good! Her talent reminds me of the great Tracey Ullman. (who I ADORE) Honestly folks, she nailed each and every one of these customers with such precision, I actually thought I was watching REAL customers. And I have to also share that it may seem to you as though this video is a BLOWN UP version of these customers, but it’s not. Cross my heart. This is EXACTLY how these customers look and act.

So, allow me to share with you a day in the life of what it’s like to be ME. Please sit back for 4 minutes and enjoy a hearty, farty laugh. And thank you, Kaleena. You’re FLAWLESS!

Wishing you a stunning weekend everyone!

I followed the exit sign and then it just disappeared.... lol. This video is so typical of all the people I know... but not me, you understand.

  3. That is a HOOT, Ron! And I never even worked in cosmetics! But I do remember the millions of people who would CONSTANTLY ask for a discount or attempt to bargain with you over a freakin' towel, like our dept store was some sort of giant garage sale!!!! And I know this isn't PC, but the folks from other countries were definitely the ones doing it!

I choked on my coffee about the Beyonce looking hot in her fragrance ad!!!! LOL - sorry chick, but you spraying something on your wrist isn't going to make you any hotter!!!!

    Isn't she hilarious? She's brilliant!

"I thought it was only me who didn't know how to get out of Macy's whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. It's the truth, I just could not find the way. I followed the exit sign and then it just disappeared.... lol. "

    HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!

And have you ever been to the Macy's in NYC? It's even MORE confusing because it's so BIG!

"This video is so typical of all the people I know... but not me, you understand."

Honestly, I see people like this almost every single day. Especially the one's who ask, "You have free gift?"

    Bwhahahhahahahahahahaha!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a great day and weekend!

"And I know this isn't PC, but the folks from other countries were definitely the ones doing it!"

But it's true. And I think it's because in their countries they can BARTER. Although, many of these people live here in the U.S. now, yet they STILL think they can barter. There have been times when I just come right out and say, "This is not a flea market, we DON'T negotiate. The price is what it is."

"I choked on my coffee about the Beyonce looking hot in her fragrance ad!!!! "

""lead in it" hahahahahahaahaaaa.... like i'm gonna give up my dior for a little less lead?"

There was actually a time when customers WHERE asking that because of the lead scare in lipsticks.

"oh my i can only imagine what you get yourselves into with humanity of the female persuasion."

Actually, I LOVE working with the female persuasion. Females are faaaaaaaaaaaabulous! And if it weren't for females, we wouldn't even have the cosmetic industry, and I wouldn't have a job. HA!

Yes, isn't she BRILLIANT? Her videos are so professionally made. I read that she use to be in cosmetic industry, thus the reason for this video. But she's also a professional actress; doing stand-up comedy. And I think she lives right here on the east coast.

  24. Oh Ron, crack me up! That was so funny and even though I don’t work behind a cosmetic counter I really can SEE those customers!

“Do you have a free gift?” (ROFLOL)

I can just imagine HOW many of those you get in one day! We’ve been over this already, but I don’t even want a free gift! I go to the department store because they have the BEST make-up!

I LOVE Macy’s. I could be a Macy’s whore—not THEIR whore, but a whore because I could spend all my money in their make-up department!

I really like when you write about your work because your passion shines through. Not many people can say they LOVE their job and if you love it, it’s NOT work! You have the best of both worlds. You get PAID to do what you love! That is so awesome!

And seriously, what do you have for wrinkles?

I can just imagine HOW many of those you get in one day! We’ve been over this already, but I don’t even want a free gift! I go to the department store because they have the BEST make-up!"

I probably get asked that question by at least every other customer in a day. They're affectionately referred to as the, "Free with purchase customers!"

"I LOVE Macy’s. I could be a Macy’s whore—not THEIR whore, but a whore because I could spend all my money in their make-up department!"

If you ever visit NYC, please go the Macy's in Herald Square because their cosmetic department is the BIGGEST cosmetic department I have EVER seen. OMG....it's HUGE. And VERY exciting!

"I really like when you write about your work because your passion shines through. Not many people can say they LOVE their job and if you love it, it’s NOT work! You have the best of both worlds. You get PAID to do what you love! That is so awesome!"

Thank you. I truly love my job. If I didn't have passion for what I do, I honestly couldn't do it. Is my job annoying at times? Yes. But overall I LOVE it!

Yes, customers actually DO that! In fact, we have customers that come in on a daily basis and spray their ENTIRE body with cologne - I kid you not! I once saw a customer moisturize her arms and legs and then spray her body with cologne, and then walk out of the store as if she was ENTITLED.

"I've never heard of customers asking for free gifts. It's hilarious! Bartering is only for boot fairs (garage sales?) here. Not in shops!"

    AMEN!!!!!

This industry is to blame for the 'free gift' thing because they started it as a means to attract customers to BUY their products, but it's gotten WAY out of hand because now customers EXPECT it with every purchase. However, companies like mine don't offer free gifts, therefore it's very challenging to make a sale.

"And sorry I'm late to read this. Seems like I'm ridiculously forgetful lately. Soon I'll be asking for directions to the CVS parking lot (while I'm standing at the register in the front of the store."

HAHHAHAHAHAHA! Oh, how FUNNY! And no worries, my friend, I LOVE whenever you stop by. And besides, I'm getting very forgetful lately myself - especially at the grocery store and wondering why the hell I even went there - HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a grrrrrrreat week!

    X to you and Cristybella!
