Post updates by email:

I owe my inspiration for this post to Pamela, over at Harts Beat, when she commented on my last post about her feelings on city life versus suburban life. And although she adores visiting a city for many reasons, Pamela prefers to live in the wide open space of the suburbs. I understand and honor her feelings because we're all drawn to reside in different environments according to our soul.

Pamela’s comment got me thinking about one of the main reasons why I enjoy living in a city; thus this vent.

So thank you, dear lady!

---------------------------------

I know this post is going to sound odd for many of you because you probably have a car, right?

Well, one of things I cherish about living in this city is that I don’t need to have one.

How can I say this other than just coming out with it?

I DESPISE HAVING A CAR.

In fact, I despise it so much that I would almost rather have a proctology examination from a doctor with a hangnail, than experience the PAINFUL and UNENDING responsibility of having a vehicle.

Most people feel that a car gives them more freedom. I, on the other hand, think of a car as crazed monkey on my back that has an unquenchable hunger for BANANA’S.

Do you have any idea how much money I no longer fork out by not having a car?

Things like: car payments, car insurance, car inspections, gas, and repairs. Because as you know….ironically nothing is EVER covered under the warranty except for something stupid, such as, windshield wiper blades.

Yet, I do know a few people who live in this city and still choose to own a car, always worrying about where to park it and whether it will be vandalized.

No, I would much rather rent a car or use something like, Philly Car Share, if I need a set of wheels to travel a long distance for the day. Other than that, I walk everywhere, but will sometimes use public transportation.

It’s not that I’m not a responsible person mind you; I’m just not responsible when it comes to having an automobile.

I simply do not contain the mental capability to take care of a car. I’m one of those people who actually forgets to put gas in the tank, let alone noticing when to take it in for an oil change, tire rotation, or tune up.

I remember a time while living in Florida, when my car suddenly started smoking out of the tail pipe. And when I say smoking….I mean SMOKING. My car looked like a scene from the movie, The Wizard of Oz, where the Wicked Witch of the West flies across the sky on her broom, writing, SURRENDER DOROTHY. It was so embarrassing to sit there at a red light watching all the other people coughing in their cars around me; quickly rolling up their windows in fear of being asphyxiated from BROOM smoke.

Luckily, I was able to get to a gas station before my car blew up. However, when the mechanic looked under the hood and examined the damages, he said, “Let me ask you a question, when is the last time you checked the oil in this car?” I responded, “Um…like a year ago?” “Well, you don’t have a drop of lubricant in this engine, did you know that?” I inquisitively said, “Whoa…really?!”

Anyhow, needless to say the car was unsalvageable because the lack of oil destroyed the whole engine.

So, do you know what I had to do?

Buy another broom.

See, that’s what I mean….I don’t have any iota as to how to take care of a car. Nor, do I have any interest.

I much prefer to use a car for a few years until it blows up and then buy a new one. Which ends up being MORE of an expense.

No.

I am soooooooooo not a car person.

It’s like a monkey on my back….

Have a SUPER weekend everyone!

I love my car, but I know people (other than you) who don't rate having one. When I was younger I enjoyed handling a car and I still do, although now it's more of a necessity than a luxury. The ageing joints, you know, and the difficulties of walking far. Happy Friday.

  2. I would miss not having a car. MWM and I had one each when we were working, now we have one between us. We probably only use it to go shopping, whenever we travel any distance we either use public transport (we have a free bus pass because we're over 60) or we go on coach trips as you know. :)

  3. Well, Ronnie, as a person who has lived in the suburbs for almost my whole life, I will tell you that I HATE owning a car too! It's a necessity that I could do without!!! For all of the reasons that you mentioned.

Oh, to have the freedom to just walk wherever I needed to go......I couldn't walk to get a single thing where I live now! My neighbor, who grew up in Queens, says what he misses the most is not being able to walk to get a gallon of milk. AMEN!

  4. I sometimes wish I didn't HAVE to have a car. You are right... they are expensive. I am actually contemplating buying a scooter! You know...one of those Vespas? We will only be 4 miles from our restaurant and I could go a whole month or more on a tank of gas! I think they get like 90 miles to the gallon and they go up to 60 so why not? I think it would be cool but Dwight and Erinn think I am crazy!

OMG, I cannot believe you said that because I too have often thought about getting a Vespa, so I don't think you're crazy at all - I actually think that's a GREAT idea! I see MANY people in this city driving around on them and it looks so cool, not to mention a hell of a lot less expensive than a car. So, go for it, Peg!

In many European countries they use Vespa's.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear friend. Have a delightful weekend!

Hope all is going well with the restaurant!

  6. Good morning Valerie~

Me too, when I was younger I LOVED having a car. However, that's because my father took care of everything for me - HA!

But you're right, living outside the city limits a car is a necessity. You truly need one to get around.

I remember when I first decided to move back to a city, the first thing out of my mouth was....OMG, I can get rid of my car!!!!!!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, dear lady. Happy Friday! Have a SUPER weekend!

"I would miss not having a car."

Yes, and I'm sure where you live, you absolutely need a car.

"MWM and I had one each when we were working, now we have one between us."

That's faaaaaaaaaabulous, because I'm sure having only one now, it's much less of expense and upkeep.

"We probably only use it to go shopping, whenever we travel any distance we either use public transport (we have a free bus pass because we're over 60) or we go on coach trips as you know."

That's what I love about the European countries, you guys are much more use to traveling by way of public transportation.

Ooooo....and you just reminded me, in 4 more years I'll be getting a FREE bus, subway, and train pass!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by, m'dear. Have a glorious weekend!

I soooooooooo agree, living in the burbs you MUST have a car or you can't around. Florida does have public transportation, but it's very limited and SLOW.

AMEN is right! That's what I ADORE about city life - I truly enjoy walking everywhere because it's good exercise and keeps me fit. I can't tell you how many of the elderly you see walking through the streets with their little walkers. It amazes me how they get around, but they do!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Wishing you a flawless weekend!

  11. Hilarious post, Ron! And so spot on! I gave up my car when I moved back to NY from Connecticut 14 years ago and I don't miss it at all. Parking grief, endless repairs, road-raging psychopaths--who needs them!?! I can get around just fine on the subway and skip all those wicked "Surrender Dorothy" moments! The only time I'm driving is when I'm renting a car on vacation. of course, it takes me a while to get used to a new car, since I'm used to driving wrecks!

Oh, and by the way you'd "rather have a proctology examination from a doctor with a hangnail, than experience the PAINFUL and UNENDING responsibility of having a vehicle"?!?! Yikes, you'd have a hard time sitting in the driver's seat after something like that!! Have a great weekend, buddy, and keep walking!

  13. Hi Ronnie,

I always try and keep an open mind in life(knowing that some people have no choice due to many factors. D & I are the same when it comes to cars " Don't need one!".
We have tons of mass transit in the Paris area, which is already car and traffic jammed inside and out. Then, the costs also rule against us owning one. We rent when we need one and that is fine!

It actually took a "minor" incident (an accident that totaled the hood) that made us ask what we wanted. It has been over 8 years since we last owned one.

I find that D does not lose the knack after not driving for long months. He says it is "like riding a bike; you don't forget".

Big hugs down to you down to Philly.

    xoxo

  15. Ron, love the photo of Surrender Dorothy! And that last of one of dog and monkey it so cute. Fun post.

I so wish I didn't need to have to car because it's a huge responsibility with the upkeep as you said, and I'm not very good at it either. But unfortunately I NEED one. Sometimes I wish I lived in a city with public transportation available.

    Have a nice weekend, Ron!

Yes, I do understand that having a car is truly a necessity when you live away from any public transportation - you just gotta have one!

  18. Responsibility of a car can be expensive at times.
When my car breaks down, I just hop on my broom, lol!
I am one of the few car owners who generally puts less than ten miles a week on my car, no kidding! I don't mind city driving but I detest interstate driving...actually only getting on and off the ramps! Needless to say I am a nervous driver - I need a chauffeur!

I've always said that if I was ever filthy rich, I would hire a cook to cook for me, and a chauffeur to drive for me. BOTH of which I can't stand to do - HA!

Aw...thank you. I'm SUCH a 'visual person' so I like to include photos with my post because the help to express my point.

"..I for one, am a huge car nut. I drive a Toyota 4Runner and I adore my car. Simply adore. I also have a '69 Pontiac stored in the barn that I've had for too many years. A long time ago I even drove a '46 Chevy Truck. True love my friend. :o)"

I think it's AWESOME that you enjoy having and driving a car, I truly wish I did! And it's so ironic because when I had a car, TWO of them were a Toyota Tercel and a Chevy Nova. And out of all the six cars I've ever owned, those two were the least amount of trouble. They're STRONG cars.

"...I do think if I lived in the city I would still have a car but it would be one of 'em Mini Coopers or something very small. I just love cars and I love driving, it's an escape for me when I drive. "

  21. Buying a new broom every few years can really put a dent in anyone's budget - I so get that! My car is about, let's see, 13 years old I think. Getting close to replacement time, but I'd rather wait it out until I can write my own Surrender Dorothy message in smoke.

On a totally unrelated note, I've been wondering how your negotiations with potential advertisers is going? Still keeping my fingers crossed for you!!

hope you have a lovely weekend, mi amigo!! xoxo

  22. If I lived in the city like you do, I'd probably be perfectly fine without a car, too!

That is, if I lived in YOUR city. Portland? I'd still need one very much. There are too many trips to the coast or the forest or, yes, even the suburbs that I'd be missing out on without one.

Fortunately, while I have gone quite a long time between oil changes in the past, I've never actually blown up a car before. Whew.

  23. Believe it or not, as much as I love living in the suburbs, and long to actually live in no man’s land, I HATE to drive! Yep. I’d much rather have a chauffer. But PLEASE don’t take my car from me because currently I can’t afford a chauffer thus have to drive my own butt around unless my husband or son are kind enough to drive me.

I LOVE your Surrender Dorothy picture! I can just see your car, smoke billowing all around, people next to you winding up their windows, ignoring you (people can be so ignorant). Nevertheless, car maintenance is not my specialty either. I can fill my tank and I do know where to put oil and windshield wiper fluid. But that’s about it. If anything else happens, it’s a good thing I have a cell phone to call my dad! My husband’s not a car mechanic either. The man can do just about anything else though!

But hey, when I come for a visit, I’ll gladly take public transportation with you! It will feel like a fun adventure!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm sure hubby would love not having to pay for insurance and repairs on his truck and motorcycle, my car and my son's car but around here we all need our vehicles. There is some public transportation and he's taken it into Philly occasionally if he's at a job location where he can use it. It does save some money on tolls and parking garages, that's for sure. But it's not often he can really do that and alot of times he needs tools and equipment so the truck is a necessity.
For now, I do like having a car and being able to go all the places I go. It would be neat to live in a city and be able to walk from place to place too but I still think I would probably miss my car eventually. I don't do well on buses/trains or even being a passenger in another car... motion sickness... so being the driver is usually best for me with that.
One thing that drives hubby crazy though is that I am terrible about gassing up my car. I'll wait 'til there's like a quarter of a tank and then still go awhile longer before getting to a gas station.

Have a wonderful weekend! Happy walking! xo

  25. I would think, living in the city now days, a car would be a hindrance too.

When I lived in London, parking was still OK. You could always park outside your house. People were one car families back then, or no car at all. Now, most families have at least three cars! You have to pay for a permit to park, in a lot of cases and not always close to your house either.

You have it right. The city isn't a place to own a car - even if you looked after it :))

"Buying a new broom every few years can really put a dent in anyone's budget - I so get that."

You said it, girl! That's why it's so much better that I no longer have a car - truthfully, I am SO irresponsible with them.

"My car is about, let's see, 13 years old I think. Getting close to replacement time, but I'd rather wait it out until I can write my own Surrender Dorothy message in smoke."

HA! WOW!....13 years old?!?!? That's AMAZING! You must take very good care of it. I think the longest I ever had a car was maybe 4 years?! And I always bought a used, not a new.

"On a totally unrelated note, I've been wondering how your negotiations with potential advertisers is going? Still keeping my fingers crossed for you!!"

Thank you for asking. Ironic you mentioned that because I will posting all about it on one of my two posts next week. It's actually going well. Not with potential advertisers just yet, but with setting up my advertising widget on my sidebar and also my ad/sponsor page. I also signed up for an advertising affiliate which has accepted my blog into their program. I'll tell ya more about it next week.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Diane. Wishing you and Cristybella a flawless weekend!

"I would think, living in the city now days, a car would be a hindrance too."

Yes, it truly is. Not all the cities here in the U.S. have good public transportation, however Philly does. And so does NYC. Actually, NYC has the most AWESOME public transportation system because the city is so MASSIVE, they have to.

"When I lived in London, parking was still OK. You could always park outside your house. People were one car families back then, or no car at all. Now, most families have at least three cars! You have to pay for a permit to park, in a lot of cases and not always close to your house either."

Interesting to hear about London! Yes, they have permit parking here in certain areas (like South Philly). But other than that, people have to drive around until they find a spot, or they have to pay to have their car parked in a garage, which is VERY expensive.

"There is some public transportation and he's taken it into Philly occasionally if he's at a job location where he can use it. It does save some money on tolls and parking garages, that's for sure."

I LOVE the PATCO Line! I use to take it into Collingswood. It's such a fast and easy ride.

I soooo know what you mean because I too am NOT a good passenger in another car. Also, I'm not crazy about riding the buses here. If I use public transportation, it's usually the subway or Septa Railroad. I LOVE train travel!

  31. Ron-- I hate having a broom too. I just finally took mine to Jiffy Lube because some light went on in the dashboard. Actually several lights kept coming on in the week before I took it. But just brief flashes of them and I couldn't figure out which one was having an aneurysm until finally the oil light stayed on permanently. OMG. The guy at Lube said it was "really bad" and chastised me for not treating my car better. The oil had turned really brown and gross and dirty and I was probably thisclose to losing my engine.

I hate brooms, but I live in the burbs and I need it. I dream of living in Paris in my next life, where you don't need a broom at all and you can walk or take public transport everywhere. And the walking? Oh, the walking! Every block is a delight to see. Even the "bad sections" are beautiful!

Yes, when you live in the burbs, a car a necessity. Oh, PARIS!!! I've never been, but hear it's faaaaaabulous! As well as London and Rome.

The thing a I adore about city life is the walking. Because when you walk everywhere you get SEE/NOTICE everything around you, instead of whizzing by on a broom! Plus, it's great exercise.

Ah, yes, they are indeed greedy monsters, aren't they? But you know, if you look after them, they do actually last quite a long time! LOL!

I wouldn't be without my little Toyota Yaris. It's such a great car, and perfect for transporting greyhounds. It's low enough for the oldies or the tripods to jump into the back, and there's plenty of space for them to lie down comfortably for the journey. It would be pretty impossible for me to go anywhere with them on public transport, and precious few taxis will take them.

And I'm antisocial. I loathe climbing on a crowded bus and being squashed up against a stranger and having to try to sit so as to give them enough room but keep at least half my bum on the seat, and balance my shopping. I end up in pain within five minutes AND there's no radio or CD player!!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA! Tracy you KILL ME!!!!!

But I have to tell something, I've actually thought about buying a pair of those, I kid you not! I've seen several kids with them, come rolling through my store and they looked looked like FUN!!!

    Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Thanks for stopping by, girl! Hope you're having a faaaaaaaabulous weekend!

  36. Hey there Jay~

"But you know, if you look after them, they do actually last quite a long time! LOL!"

I know, that's my problem, I DON'T look after them.

    I'm a retched car-neglector :(

"I wouldn't be without my little Toyota Yaris. It's such a great car, and perfect for transporting greyhounds."

Now I will tell you that out of ALL six cars I've owned, my Toyota Tercel was the BEST. Toyota is such a great brand of car. They're very strong and long-lasting. Um....that is unless "I" own one - HA!

    "And I'm antisocial........."

I so know what you mean, Jay, because I too can be antisocial at times, so I identify with your feelings - especially on a crowded bus! It's the pits! However, I would rather deal with that than own a car, that's how much I can't stand having one.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're having a SUPER weekend!

  37. I totally understand Ron! If I lived in a city where I could easily walk or take public transportation, then I'd be all for it. I do not drive very much...it's my husband who does all the driving. I have always lived in the suburbs though, so I don't really know. Guess I'll have to try city life! Let's see...I'm 53...what do you think the chances are that I might do that?? It sure would save a boatload of cash though!! Have a great Sunday!! xo

  38. Gooooooood morning Jeanne~

Yes, if you don't live in a city it's truly impossible NOT to have a car to get around, so I understand what you mean. Before I lived in Philly I HAD have a car.

"Guess I'll have to try city life! Let's see...I'm 53...what do you think the chances are that I might do that?? It sure would save a boatload of cash though!!"

HAHAHAHAHHAHA! OMG, knowing how fun and energetic you are, I think you would ENJOY living in a city. Especially one like Philly, because it's VERY dog-friendly, and more like a small town than a city.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Hope you're enjoying a wonderful weekend!

X to you and the girlz!

  39. I WISH i could be like you. However, I live an hour away from my work so not having a car is not an option. I just took my car in for inspection, oil change on Sat and found out my water pump was leaking and the back wiper was wrecked (yup that part is totally my own fault). To my surprise the wiper was not covered (11 dollars) but the water pump was (350 dollars!). I guess this time it worked out for the good but you are right in most scenarios cars are not worth the money we sink into them!

  40. Hey there Shae~

"However, I live an hour away from my work so not having a car is not an option."

Exactly, and I know that most people NEED a car to get around, it's not an option.

Whew...excellent! So glad to hear that the water pump was! $11 is much better than $350!

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Hope you're enjoying a great weekend!

  41. hello dear ron..
another expose of your idiosyncrasies and i so agree and would be the same if it were not i live too far from EVERYTHING to actually not have one...i do have a driver called husband most of the time tho sometimes nothing's better than driving with my U2 blasting 100mph. yes, i am somewhat irresponsible....

my son lives in the city-when not in singapore and hoping soon-and they plan only to rent when necessary as they don't really need one there. i agree....why bother with all that?!
xoxoxoxo and sorry to be gone lately but this new blog....what to say....it's not like blogger....

  42. Yeah, you must save THOUSANDS of dollars every year by NOT having a car. Seriously.

  43. Hello Linda~

"...i do have a driver called husband most of the time tho sometimes nothing's better than driving with my U2 blasting 100mph. "

    You GO, Linda!!!!!

One thing I DID like about having a car were those times driving on a wide open country road - the windows down, the music blaring, and the wind blowing through my hair. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Hope you're enjoying your new blog home, dear friend. It looks faaaaaabulous!!!!!

Mucho thanks for stopping by. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

  44. Hiya Meleah~

OMG, you have NO idea how much I save in NOT having a car.

Yes, my apartment rent (living in a city) is more expensive than when I lived in Florida, but I figured out that it's still cheaper for me each month, not having a car. I have it very lucky living in the building I do because my heat is included in the rent, therefore my utility bills are much less than when I lived in Florida because of running the A/C all year.

Honestly, I actually spend less living in a city.

However, if I lived in NYC....that would be a whole other story$$$$$

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Hope you're having a great weekend and got your blog fixed.

  45. if i could get by with not having a car, i might think about it. the only reason i wouldn't mind is because i would get to walk or run everywhere, but then i'd be all stinky and sweaty and nobody would want to be around me. kind of a necessity for where i live. i don't like putting gas in the car, oil changes, etc., but it gets done out of necessity - do it or else it'll break down on the road. ha! i am kinda loving my car tho', it's new, before my accident i was driving around in fred flinstone's car and i'm so surprised what cars can do now. only thing missing is my stick shift, but in due time, my dear ron, in due time.

  46. Yup...like $40.00 for a bagel.

" the only reason i wouldn't mind is because i would get to walk or run everywhere, but then i'd be all stinky and sweaty and nobody would want to be around me."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I so know what you mean because during the hot summer months here, I still walk everywhere and sweat like a PIG!

" i don't like putting gas in the car, oil changes, etc., but it gets done out of necessity - do it or else it'll break down on the road.'

Exactly! And I'm a PERFECT example of that. My cars just BLOW UP - HA!

Congrats on your new car, girl! Yes, cars are like computers, the second you buy one, a new one is created; outdating the last with new stuff.

"only thing missing is my stick shift, but in due time, my dear ron, in due time."

I so hear ya, because when I had a car, I ALWAYS preferred a stick shift because you have more control of car.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Val. Hope you had a supa' weekend!

  48. I totally agree with you. If I lived in the city, then I don't think I'd want a car either. But alas, I live in the suburbs, where nothing is as it seems. Being far removed from work, downtown...heck, even the supermarket, a car is a necessary evil.

Now, if I lived in, say, London, with their amazing public transportation system, I'd despise cars as well.

...oh, and your description of a doctor with a hangnail gave me the shivers! ;-) Heh....

    Excellent post, my friend!

Absolutely! If you live in the burbs, you most definitely need a set of wheels.

Ah....London, never been, but I hear that their public transportation (especially The Tube) is remarkable!

".oh, and your description of a doctor with a hangnail gave me the shivers! ;-) Heh...."

    OUCH, right?

Thanks so much for stopping by, bud. Hope you and the family had a maaaaavalous weekend!

X to you, Karin, and Mr. Tyler!

  50. I'm not one to love driving but I have to say that when we lived in London, of all places, it was so great having my car. I buzzed around with the dogs all the time. When we lived in Philly, I didn't have a car and really didn't miss it. When you don't have it, you get used to not relying on it. Being in a city makes it so much easier to not have one.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hey there Jen~

OMG, that's right....I totally forgot you lived in London!

"When you don't have it, you get used to not relying on it. Being in a city makes it so much easier to not have one."

You're right, you do get use to not relying on it. Honest to god, if been in Philly so long now, that I can't even remember what it was like having a car?!?

I wonder if I can still drive? HA!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, my friend. Have a wonderful Monday and week!

  53. Greetings Liza!

Welcome! Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing a comment. So nice to meet you!

"...I just dislike driving them. I think I could say that I despise driving as much as you despise cars? "

Actually, I'm the same way...not only do I despise cars, I also despise driving them. I become very aggressive and impatient when I drive - it's called ROAD RAGE - HA!

Please stop by anytime. You're always welcomed here!

    Enjoy your week!
