There are two things that scare the living hell out of me.

1) This expression on Faye Dunaway’s face as Joan Crawford, in the move, Mommie Dearest.

2) And BUGS.

Do you remember me sharing with you about a year or so ago, how I had encountered one of those HUGE and HORRENDOUSLY disgusting Palmettos (water bugs) in my apartment, and that I had to SQUASH it with my precious small oriental screen that I got in Japan?

Well.

Guess what?

I had THREE more of those heinous bugs invade my apartment over the past two months.

Holy shit….it’s like they’re ganging up with a devious plan to KILL me in the middle of the night while I’m asleep, with those razor-sharp TEETH and thorn-like CLAWS.

I only bear witness to them during of the months of June, July and August, because they savor the hot, moist summer humidity. While living in Florida, it was nothing for me to find several of them in a week, cleverly hiding between the shower curtain and liner; waiting to attack me.

The first one I encounter was this past June, when I heard it FLYING around my apartment which sounded like an army helicopter, just as I was getting ready to go to bed. It took me THIRTY minutes to finally catch it by swatting it with a BROOM as it flew above me, while I SCREECHED like a total Sissy Mary. I finally knocked it down and then smashed it with a BOOK.

The second one wasn’t as traumatic because I already discovered it DEAD when I walked into my apartment the day I came home from Florida. As soon as I opened the front door, I was greeted by its STIFF and UPTURNED carcass on my hardwood floor. Welcome home! When I went to pick it up with a paper towel, I heard it CRUNCH. It must have been lying there since the first week I was gone because it had slowly transformed into a Palmetto potato chip.

The third one I encountered was just a few nights ago, and again, it happened right before I was getting ready to go to bed. I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth, when all of a sudden I saw its reflection in the bathroom mirror as it was climbing up the mini blinds behind me.

Well, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen someone SCREAM with a mouth full of toothpaste. As I jumped 20 feet in the air, the toothpaste shot out of my mouth like a CANNON; landing all over the mirror. I ran to the kitchen and grabbed the bug spray under the sink, and then ran back into the bathroom and sprayed that sucker for TEN minutes. But guess what? It didn’t die! It just fell into the bath tub and began running around like it had just snorted an entire gram of COCAINE. So I grabbed my broom and began SMASHING it over and over again, but it wouldn’t die, it just kept GETTING UP AND RUNNING. I felt like I was in some horror movie about the living dead.

But then I suddenly got an idea.

I opened the bathroom window, and then scooped up the bug with the broom and quickly SHOVED it out my 21st floor window, while yelling….”DIE, DIE YOU WICKED BEAST!!!!!”

You know, it’s times like these when I wish I still had a CAT.

Wishing you a BUG-FREE weekend everyone!

  1. Good morning Ronnie,

Boy oh boy; you have been attacked! I have heard about the heat back East so, this is the time of the year that they multiply in the colder climes. Not like in FL or Hawaii where it is like year long.

One of the big pluses of my move to Europe was... never seeing again those Kamikazi cockaroaches! The huge brown ones like in your pic. Oh yes...In Hawaii, you are fighting a never-ending battle with them because they breed like mad in those hot conditions. Same with termites that will eat you out of the house if you don't do treatments reguarly.

My best buddies against them the roaches were the geckos. Geckos are your silent guardians against bugs as they gobble roaches, flies and all.
    Bravo!!

I will already excuse the violent reactions this will produce but, I was just before on a travel blog. I did not make this up; the writer described watching a fellow traveler eat... fried bugs. The writer was having a hard time staying calm. This was in Bangkok. None for me; I'm on a diet ...

Happy weekend. Enjoy and be happy xox

  2. Heehee it's the way you tell 'em. I couldn't help but see the funny side of the tooth cleaning episode. What you need is a good wasp swatter. I have one and it kills anything that moves with one quick flip. Wham! Dead!

Never heard of a palmetto before, it looks pretty vile. I'm like you, I hate creepy insects. In my house I'm the chief insect killer... and proud of it.

Read barbj92's comment ... had to smile at the statement 'I'm on a diet' whaaaaaaaa!

Hope you're heading for am insect-free weekend.

  3. Boy can I relate to this madness. We suffer giant centipedes here. The damn things are 4 inches long and run at 100 mph. I shower them with Lysol spray, wait for them to slow down, then get out the vacuum! You are braver than me with the paper towel.

My kids still talk about our two encounters indoors with wood spiders. Do not google image those freakish monsters, Ron!

Have a bug free weekend! Xo

  4. We don't get big things like that here but I did have a fright a few days ago when I was busy blogging on my lap top in the lounge and suddenly caught a movement in the dining room from the corner of my eye. Turning quickly I saw a huge black cat which had wandered in through my open back door. Frightened the bejebus out of me it did! I think I frightened the bejebus out of the cat though when I screamed. LOL

  5. Oh, God, Ron, these slimey little bastards have got your number! I hate them so much--like Indiana Jones hates snakes! It's so funny you mention the cat, too, because my sister said her cat used to bring her waterbugs he had killed. It was like, "look, Mommy, see what I did!" I'm sure God had His reasons for creating this abominations, but He's sure keeping it a secret! Good luck driving this filth from your home, buddy! Send them back to Hell from whence they came! And have a great weekend!

  6. When we first moved to Kent from London, we were horrified one day. When we went to the local station to catch a train, everywhere you looked you saw huge, hard bugs flying around and walking on the ground. Some were as big as baby tortoises! When we asked the stationmaster, he told us that they called them 'June Bugs' and you had to be careful because they 'cling' if they land on you and you can't get them off! A friend of mine had one cling to his nose and had to go to hospital to get it removed! We avoided those bugs like the plague, I can tell you! They looked rather like your bugs.

Our cats won't catch anything we don't like, but I am always trying to save moths from their waiting jaws!

  7. oh dear ron,
i soooooo hear you and imagine living where i do? and spiders that are the size of my hand that only come out at night...in my house! they run around on the floor doing heaven knows what and scaring the crap out of me. BUT i cannot squash them either. i have to yell for husband, who then must rescue me again from the fiends. and the potato bugs...do you know what that is? well they are a beetle but not any beetle. they are about 3" long and they bite! and if you squash some of them, for whatever reason, long white worms fall out of their bellies and THEY start squirming all over the floor!!!!!!!!!! i only had this happen once to me and i will never recover from my shocked horror. it was the most horrifying bug experience of my entire life. oh.... that and walking into a 20th floor hotel room in Hawaii and discovering it was covered in cockroaches in the middle of the night....................... yes...when i went to bed, pulled back the sheets and there was the first....of course, night time is their witching hour. after an hour to recover from that shock, i went to bed and laid there. about an hour later i had to pee...of course.. so i pad into the bathroom and yes, turn on the light. THEY ARE SCATTERING EVERYWHERE FROM FLOOR TO CEILING! THERE'S SO MANY THEY ARE FALLING ON MY HEAD! O>M>G. i died ... then i came back but had no bug spray or broom or man to help me. i called the maids, the staff, poked every button on the phone and had the whole hotel cleaning staff in my room in minutes.

of course by then, there wasn't a bug in sight.... damn, i hate bugs...have a glorious weekend my friend and stay out of the wind and the heat and be bug-free.

    XOX ;)

  8. Those palmetto bugs are the worst ever! I'd never seen one until my hubby returned from a work site in Savannah...I swear, those things came home in his boxes...I freaked when I saw the first one. I thought it was a mouse/roach mutant!

" Oh yes...In Hawaii, you are fighting a never-ending battle with them because they breed like mad in those hot conditions. Same with termites that will eat you out of the house if you don't do treatments reguarly."

Yes! Yes! Yes! That's right, you lived in Hawaii so you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about when it comes to those retched BUGS!!!!

"My best buddies against them the roaches were the geckos. Geckos are your silent guardians against bugs as they gobble roaches, flies and all.
    Bravo!!"

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA! Florida has those geckos too, which I loved btw, not only because I thought they were cute, but because they ate ALL the bugs! So maybe that's what I need to do....buy a couple of geckos and let them roam free in my apartment as "bug guardians!"

"I did not make this up; the writer described watching a fellow traveler eat... fried bugs. The writer was having a hard time staying calm. This was in Bangkok. None for me; I'm on a diet ..."

    OH. MY GOD. ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!

I don't care if I was starving to death, there is no way I would eat a fried bug!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend! Have a happy weekend!

  10. Gooood morning Valerie~

OMG...you should have seen that toothpaste SHOOT out of mouth! By the time I had gotten back to clean it off the bathroom mirror, it had dried so it was a bitch to remove - HA!

"What you need is a good wasp swatter. I have one and it kills anything that moves with one quick flip. Wham! Dead!"

Thank you for your suggestion, I really do get one of those because using a bug spray is so messy and it really doesn't kill them quickly. Plus, the smell is horrible.

"Never heard of a palmetto before, it looks pretty vile. I'm like you, I hate creepy insects. In my house I'm the chief insect killer... and proud of it."

You GO, girl! And I bet your hubby is HAPPY about that!

Yes, palmetto bugs are VILE! Not only are they HUGE, but they FLY - it's scares the living crap out of me. You should be so glad you don't have them in the U.K.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, dear lady. Have a terrific weekend!

Bwhahahhahahahaha! OMG...that made me HOWL!!!! Yes, I've seen those centipedes you speak of, but not since living in Florida. I've never seen them here in the northeast - at least where I live.

And funny you mentioned using the vacuum cleaner, because when I lived in Florida (where they have a TON of spiders), I would use the vacuum cleaner hose to SUCK them off the wall because I couldn't go anywhere near them!

"My kids still talk about our two encounters indoors with wood spiders. Do not google image those freakish monsters, Ron!"

Ewwwwwwwwww!!! But I may have to google them later today, just to see what they look like.

Thanks for stopping by! And again, congratulations on selling your house. Wishing you the best in moving!

    Have a grrrreat weekend....X

You should be so happy you don't experience these bugs in the UK because they're hideous-looking!

Now I love cats, but that would have scared even ME, to have a cat just suddenly appear like that!!!

"....my sister said her cat used to bring her waterbugs he had killed. It was like, "look, Mommy, see what I did!"

Yes, that's what I LOVED about having my cats - they were my own personal bug-patrol - HA!

" I'm sure God had His reasons for creating this abominations, but He's sure keeping it a secret!"

You know, I've thought about that myself, they must have a purpose/reason for being here but, what that is....I have no idea!?!?

Oh yeah, I know....to SCARE THE HELL OUT OF ME!!!

    OMG.....ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!

Well, I just googled 'June Bugs" to see what they looked like and discovered that I had seen them before. We had them in Florida too!!!! They're a form of a beetle, but didn't realize that they could 'cling' to you!!!!!

"Our cats won't catch anything we don't like, but I am always trying to save moths from their waiting jaws."

I know, my cats use to do the same thing...they loved catching MOTHS too. But they also loved catching those dang Palmettos, thank god! I really hate to kill anything, but I can't help when it comes to those horrible water bugs because they scare the hell out of me.

Thanks for stopping by, Babs! Have a lovely weekend!

"I'd never seen one until my hubby returned from a work site in Savannah...I swear, those things came home in his boxes..."

Yes, the south is NOTORIOUS for having them because of the massive humidity down there. And I'm sure they DID come home in his boxes because they LOVE paper - they actually EAT it - I kid you not!

Yes, as you might have read in Barbs comment, she lived in Hawaii and experienced these bugs too. They seem to thrive in places that have high humidity and water surrounding them, like Florida and Hawaii. Florida too is a haven for spiders!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your bug stories. LOVED them!

"I had to giggle at the thought of toothpaste shooting out of your mouth. That must have been some clean up."

Yeah, I used a ROLL of paper towels to get it off yet, ironically I discovered that toothpaste not only cleans jewelry very well, but also MIRRORS - HA!

Wonder why in the world they're getting into a high rise building? that's so not what I would expect. Funny about the cat - I used to have a couple of cats that caught all sorts of bugs, but the only ones they ate were cicadas. Left the rest of them dead or dying all over the front porch. Like an insect cemetary. Never understood that :) Hope you have an awesome weekend!!

And you just gave me a GREAT idea....perhaps a good way to get rid of the bugs is to play that scene in "Mommie Dearest" on my DVD player, this way it would scare the crap out of those bugs into leaving!!!!

"oh so gross. yikes! hate those bugs too, they give me the willies. *shudder* "

    Aren't they HIDEOUS????

I know (living in Texas) you must get these bugs too because of the heat and humidity. I had a friend who use to live in San Antonio and she said she saw them a lot.

"Wonder why in the world they're getting into a high rise building? that's so not what I would expect."

That's the same question I asked myself. The only thing I think of is that they must come from the basement by climbing through the walls. I have radiator heat in my building, so I think they also come through the radiator pipe openings that lead into each apartment.

"Left the rest of them dead or dying all over the front porch. Like an insect cemetary."

    OMG, that's so funny!

Whenever I saw one of those Palemettos in my apartment in Florida, I would grab one of my cats and show it to them and say, "Get it!' Within 5 minutes it were GONE - HA!

Thanks for stopping, girl. Have an AWESOME weekend!

they just run back and forth telling me to do something

Hope is afraid of bugs yet she has also inherited my no kill policy so whenever she sees one she starts screaming "it won't hurt me, it won't hurt me" while looking as if she's about to pass out
then she calls for me or her Dad to "come right now with a cup and get this thing"
then she discusses the incident for an hour with anyone who will listen, calmly telling them she caught a bug and sent it back to its family

we used to get palmettos in Brooklyn

  29. That first photo of the naked man running after that bug with the spray is hilarious, Ron! And I have to admit, I'm not at all fond of bugs myself, especially those big water bugs. Not only are the scary to look at, but just the fact that they can fly scares the bejesus out of me. And I agree, cats are great for deterring bugs. They're like having your very own roach patrol. I miss my cat.

  30. Hey there Matt~

When I saw that photo online, I laughed my ass off because that's exactly what I looked like trying to spray that bug!!!!

" Not only are the scary to look at, but just the fact that they can fly scares the bejesus out of me."

Me too! Not only is it totally freaky that they FLY, but it also freaks me out how FAST they run! One time in Florida (right after it had rained heavily), I woke up in the middle of the night and found SEVERAL of them IN BED WITH ME. I kid you not! They were running all over my sheets. OMG...I just about had a heart attack!
Then next day I fumigated my entire apartment with moth balls, because they HATE the smell of moth balls.

"And I agree, cats are great for deterring bugs. They're like having your very own roach patrol."

Oh lordy, there is a little one in the basement right now and I don't have the heart to kill it but it's parents and friends will be showing up any time now. What's especially creepy is that I have some bedding down there and I KNOW that's the perfect place for them to hang out, underneath and in between, GAHH!!! Atleast they stay mostly in the basement. 34. Wow, Ron. How traumatic for you - and quite the visual you paint, I might add. I feel that way about ants, so I can sort of relate. And just a few weeks ago there was a fly in the house. Guess who ended up with a between-meals snack?

  38. Awwwwwwwww! Poor little Palmettos!!! You do know I love insects, right?

Seriously, I do feel for you. I know all about phobias and how 'bugs' can set some people off. After all, I am always running round picking up fine examples of tegenaria domestica and taking them outside so that OH can breathe safely again. I confess there are some even I don't like much - cockroaches would be among their number, plus anything that wants to bite me - but on the whole, I'm a live and let live kind of gal.

You do need to be careful with that bug spray though. Most of them do work on mammals as well, you know, and we don't want you running round the bathtub as high as a kite. ;)

You have your bug.....I have mine.
    I don't wanna swap.
But I think I might wanna borrow Joan for relocation of the cicada killer that's taken up stakes in the side yard. That's IF himself fails--which he will cuz he'll be screaming the moment he sees the size of that sucker!

Thinkin' he might outscream you--but it'll be close! Hahahaha!!

  40. Hey there Jay~

"Awwwwwwwww! Poor little Palmettos!!! You do know I love insects, right?

but on the whole, I'm a live and let live kind of gal."

I know, aren't I HORRIBLE???? Normally, I truly don't like to kill any living thing, but these roaches scare the holy crap out of me.

"After all, I am always running round picking up fine examples of tegenaria domestica and taking them outside so that OH can breathe safely again."

OMG....I just googled that and didn't realize it was a SPIDER!!!!! You are so BRAVE to pick them up and take them outside, because there is no way I could do that. Thank god OH has you!!!!

"You do need to be careful with that bug spray though. Most of them do work on mammals as well, you know, and we don't want you running round the bathtub as high as a kite. ;)"

HA! Yes, I always open the windows when I spray that stuff and then thoroughly wash my hands afterwards, because I know how how toxic it can be :(

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're having a super weekend and that Sid and Jeffie are doing well!

  41. Goooood morning Mel~

"If a cat works, I'm all for it. However, most cats I've been......blessed.....to know (ha!) can't be bothered, dontchaknow."

It's funny because some cats are really good at taking care of the bugs, but then others (as you shared) couldn't be bothered. Luckily, both the cats I've had were GREAT bug catchers! :)

"But I think I might wanna borrow Joan for relocation of the cicada killer that's taken up stakes in the side yard."

Holy cow, are you dealing with bugs too?!?!!?

"That's IF himself fails--which he will cuz he'll be screaming the moment he sees the size of that sucker!

Thinkin' he might outscream you--but it'll be close! Hahahaha!!"

HAHHAAHAHAHHA! What is it about 'us guys' and screaming when we see bugs??? I know more guys than gals that are soooooooooo afraid of them - HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Hope you're enjoying a fantastic weekend!

    OMG...aren't they the WORST?

I can handle snakes, mice, rats, even a grizzly bear, but if you place a bug or spider in front of me....I become a totally SISSY MARY - HA!

Hope you a fantabulous weekend, girl! Mucho thanks for stopping by!

  44. Yeah, it's the same thing over here with the wife. Whenever there's a bug in the house I'm the one who's tasked with moving said beastie from the house. Usually it's simply harmless water spiders (at least that's what I call 'em). I'll just cup these in my hands and toss 'em outside. For the bigger baddies, believe me when I say that I spray 'em with Raid from a good twenty feet away. You can't fool me. I've seen some of these bugs jump and attack me. They're fearless, I tell ya!

  48. YOU CRACK ME UP! Toothpaste and mirror.... and BUGS! We live across the street from the water... when it is colder weather and we get a HUGE rain, about four times a year we get a "water bug" ... palmetto bug... giant flying roach - whatever - the same thing! And they FLY! AHHH! I save bugs when I find them in the house. But when I see one of these guys, I scream like a girl for my oldest son, who takes great pleasure in killing them. LOVE THIS POST!

  50. Man, just the visual of you trying to get that bug is hysterical! Listen, I spent some time in Florida, so I can attest that those palmettos are the scariest looking things. Any bug that's THAT big and flies should be outlawed!

    Love your selection of photos!

    yelling….”DIE, DIE YOU WICKED BEAST!!!!!”

OMG Ron! You are totally awesome. I love the visuals that you create. I want to say that I would be so much more manly, but I would probably be poking it with a broom from across the room myself. I found a HUGE (wolf) spider in the sink at my new beau's cottage and tried to wash it down for about 10 minutes, before I finally gave up. The water was on full blast, and I swear I heard it guffawing at my efforts.

LORD! Yuck. Needless to say, I had to get my big strong man to save me from this creepy crawly.

    shivers...

Have a great week! Stop by anytime.

HAHAHAAHHAHAAHA!..."I heard it guffawing at my efforts"

When I lived in Florida I saw a TON of spiders. I don't know if they were wolf spiders, but they were HUGE too. I use to capture them by using the vacuum cleaner; sucking them up with the hose - HA!

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're having a spectacular week!

  56. Ooops, sorry - should have warned you that it was a spider! I had no idea you'd Google it, which just shows where my brain is sometimes.

Yes, OH IS lucky to have me, isn't he? I often tell him so. ;)

Thanks for the good thoughts for Sid and Jeffie - it's working, because Sid is much better today. He has only had half his Tramadol dose, and almost managed his usual walk this evening! :)

  58. oh I hate them. And I hate that people try to give them cute names like Palmetto (sounds gorgeous!) or water bugs (sounds adorable!). they are ROACHES. Big nasty ROACHES.

And I know that when my cats are having parties in the middle of the night, they found one. And I know when I find one or two of those nasty jointed legs in my bed my cats thought they were doing me a favor.

I've seen five this summer in the house. FIVE! It makes me feel dirty.

"or water bugs (sounds adorable!). they are ROACHES. Big nasty ROACHES."

    Exactly....big nasty ROACHES!!!!!!

"And I know that when my cats are having parties in the middle of the night, they found one. And I know when I find one or two of those nasty jointed legs in my bed my cats thought they were doing me a favor."

Bwhahahahahahhaha! Hilarious! Aren't cats something? It's like they get pleasure in bringing their "catch" back to you as if to say, "HE, LOOK WHAT I CAUGHT, AREN'T YOU PROUD OF ME????"

"I've seen five this summer in the house. FIVE! It makes me feel dirty."

OMG, I know...isn't that horrible? But the strange thing about it is that I only see them during the summer months.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, girl. Hope you're having a great summer.
