Post updates by email:

I owe my inspiration for this post to my good friend, Jen, over at When Pigs Fly.

So thanks, girl. X ya!

Last week, Jen shared a very honest and eloquently expressed post about confidence, and how at times we seem to misplace it; wondering where it’s hiding.

I know this feeling all too well because of the various careers I’ve had in my life, which have involved wavering levels of confidence – stage acting, being the most challenging.

It becomes like a vicious cycle because after auditioning time and time again and not getting cast, you start to lose your confidence; questioning….do I really have talent? And that in turn causes you to lose your inspiration, so then you’re tempted to just stop auditioning altogether.

I had a lot of hard knocks when I first started in the theater – people telling me that I was a limited actor and could only do certain roles; never giving me the chance to show my ability. There were many times I wanted throw in the towel and walk away, but something kept pushing me to do it.

If there is one thing I’ve learned from stage acting, which really pertains to anything we do in life, is that confidence must come from within. We can’t look to the world to validate us because let’s be honest, there are a lot of people in this world who, due to their own insecurities, will never validate us because they don’t want us to “be” confident. They somehow believe that if we’re confident, it will make them feel less confident.

I would like to bring this post topic to blogging, because most of us can identify with that.

We all blog for different reasons. Some of us blog as a means of journaling our lives or to practice our writing skills. Others blog because of a passion they have for a particular topic. Some of us blog to entertain. Some of us blog to allow others to think. And then there are others who blog for all those reasons combined, like myself.

Blogging is not easy because it’s similar to life – it continually moves forward and needs to be updated - so it’s not always effortless to come up with something to share on the days that we blog. There inevitably comes a time when we feel dry, unmotivated and uninspired, which can cause us to lose confidence.

And this is where my training in the theater helps me.

You see in the theater, whether there were times on a particular night when I felt uninspired and less confident to perform, it didn’t matter, because the show MUST go on. So I had to get out there and just do it.

I use to think that as a creative person, I had to wait to be inspired or it wouldn’t be authentic.

But I realized that sometimes I have to push myself to take the first step, so that inspiration can be ignited.

Now I’m not saying that we shouldn’t take occasional breaks from blogging, or take time off to attend personal matters away from the Internet. But what I am saying is that blogging takes a strong commitment and that we might not always feel like doing it because we go through periods of feeling less inspired.

I myself have gone through this many times. But it’s ironic because when I made myself do it, sure enough, I discovered a post. And often times those posts ended up giving me a wonderful feeling of accomplishment; restoring my confidence.

I would like to conclude this post by sharing that whenever you feel uninspired or less than confident about something, try giving yourself a push and do it anyway. Because the longer you shy away, the harder it becomes to regain your confidence.

It’s kinda like giving birth to a baby and going through labor.

You gotta push sometimes to get to the creation.

Have a faaaaabulous Monday everyone!

  3. Many thanks Ron! I agree with you on so many points. There is something to be said for just doing it. Even when you don't think you can or don't want to, putting something on the page is important. It's so true that the longer you stay away the harder it is to get going again. And, in my case, losing confidence in one area of my life starts to seep into other areas. We have to find strength from within and only looking for external validation will always trip us up. Glad I could inspire this one.

  4. What a fantastic post, Ron! And it comes at such a critical time in my life, sihce I'm racking up a series of rejection letters from literary agents. I'm starting to wonder if I should continue submitting my work, but I know that regret for not trying hurts even more than rejection. As you say, the confidence has to come from within.

Blogging has helped me such much. In addition to introducing me to great people like you, I think it has given me a better eye for detail and shown me that meaningingful stories can come from anywhere.

"We can’t look to the world to validate us because let’s be honest, there are a lot of people in this world who, due to their own insecurities, will never validate us because they don’t want us to “be” confident." Now that is a seriously true statement. Thanks for posting this, buddy, and have a great week!

  5. You are so, so, so, so RIGHT. But you know, Ron, there are bloggers who inspire confidence in others... you being one of them. Whenever I've felt a downer coming on you step right in and give me a boost. That's when I push into the next thing on the mental agenda.

It's exactly the same with writing... I'm never sure about mine even after about six edits... and then I think No, don't publish, and then I think Yes, you must, and I do, although it is often with extreme apprehension. And you come along with your boosting machine and I feel GREAT.

Yes, you inspire confidence so please will you get off your backside and tell me what to do next....hahaha.

I can relate to this when it comes to writing. I joke sometimes that I could wallpaper my living room with the rejection slips I received for my various manuscripts, and it's true. But rather than give up and let my dream die, I published the book myself - and tomorrow is the one-year anniversary of that happening!

Great post, Ron. Keep on blogging!

  7. Hi Ronnie,

Thank you to Ronnie and to Jen to touching on a concept that is very familiar to many of us, me included. It is about finding my path that leads to self-fulfillment,happiness and the rest then, firing the spark that gets us going.
We all lack confidence and some of us unfortunately let ourselves stay in our world of fears.I fell in a deep funk last winter. I felt the powerful quicksand that is fear.

Ronnie is very correct to say that one has to push outwards. If we don't push, we don't find some urgency and need to do, and it just becomes an idea or a wish.

I am pushing. I don't want to be in the same place one year from now, just out of love and respect for the person I am.
I wish everyone that is struggling to make their goal also to make it.
May the force be with ya!! :)

Hugs to ya, Ron x .

  8. Hey there Jeanne~

Thank you for your sweet words, dear lady.

Quite often, like in this post, I get inspired to write things by what other bloggers write about on their blogs. Sometimes they'll post a topic that causes me to wanna embellish my own thoughts and feelings. That's what I LOVE about blogging - we all inspire each other.

I mean if it wasn't for YOU, I would have never discovered PicMonkey, so thank you!

Have a super week, Jeanne! And thanks for stopping by!

This is so true! I have experienced this constantly through my life. I had to look to the accounts I gained in my work and the awards I won with our puppet theatre to gauge the quality of what I did.

Blogging is hard for me at times, because I write about things that happen in my life. If nothing interesting or humorous happens I'm stumped for a post. I must admit that I am lazy at times though :)

    Hiya Jen!

And thank YOU because if it hadn't been for your awesome post, I wouldn't have had the inspiration for this one. As soon as I read your words, I felt inspired.

"There is something to be said for just doing it. Even when you don't think you can or don't want to, putting something on the page is important."

I agree. Like I shared, I use to think I had to wait to be inspired, but sometimes I just have to ACT inspired and then it happens.

Again, thank you so much for your honest and eloquently expressed post!

"I think it has given me a better eye for detail and shown me that meaningingful stories can come from anywhere."

Meeeeeeee too! Blogging has taught me to be more observant to whats going on around me because as you shared...stories can come from anywhere. And sometimes the best stories come from real life.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing on this post, Rob. And I must say that you have been a HUGE inspiration for me because you have done a lot of new things this year to pursue your interests, in spite of being afraid. I'm proud of you!

"I have experienced this constantly through my life. I had to look to the accounts I gained in my work and the awards I won with our puppet theatre to gauge the quality of what I did."

You GO, girl! And I've had to do the same thing throughout my acting career. There is a lot envy and competition in that career, so I had to find confidence on my own; inwardly. But it taught me not to look for validation in others.

"Blogging is hard for me at times, because I write about things that happen in my life. If nothing interesting or humorous happens I'm stumped for a post. I must admit that I am lazy at times though :)"

I so hear ya, Babs, because it's the same for me. I think personal blogs are a bit more challenging because we write from LIFE, so if there is nothing happening around us that's interesting or humorous, it's very hard sometimes to come up with a post. It's at times like that, I go back to my childhood and revisit something that may have happened to me that might be interesting.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. You have no idea how happy I am that our paths have crossed. And I am also happy that you continued to blog when you had some major technical difficulties with your blog because you PUSHED through it. I admire you for that! AND, you're an awesome writer!

    *two thumbs up*

  17. Ron, you truly spoke the absolute truth on this one.

"because let’s be honest, there are a lot of people in this world who, due to their own insecurities, will never validate us because they don’t want us to “be” confident. They somehow believe that if we’re confident, it will make them feel less confident."

Oh my, how right you are. I had to learn that the hard way because I always judged my accomplishments by the validation I got from other people, not realizing that some people could never validate me because of their own insecurities. True, it has come inwardly by knowing it ourselves.

Thank you for this post. Have a wonderful week, Ron.

"I had to learn that the hard way because I always judged my accomplishments by the validation I got from other people, not realizing that some people could never validate me because of their own insecurities."

Same here, girl. And it was through my acting career that I began to learn this myself because, as actors, we put ourselves in front of people all the time; asking for validation. It was such a wonderful lesson for me in discovering that I have to validate myself first. Confidence comes from within.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Denise. Have a super-duper week!

  23. Wow she wrote that well. I had to go read--you know how nosy I am. LOL And truly....I hear probably noted most what was true for ME. I can see the warning signs and totally ignore them.......or excuse them.

I LET things rob me of the very thing I'm trying to find/protect. Note the 'LET'......cuz I know the only one who can hand confidence over is me. And do I really WANNA hand it over to someone? Nah.....I'm kinda selfish that way. LOL But I have a 'few' human qualities to me, apparently. And on occasion, I do hand over MY happiness, MY self esteem, MY confidence......sheeeeeeshhhhh......how insane is THAT?!

    Sucks to be human. LOLOL

Somehow when I frame it that way, I get determined in the opposite direction. I do NOT hand things over easily. I work HARD for my stuff, handing something over willy nilly starts to irritate me.......WITH me.

So thanks for that. LOL Apparently I needed 'disturbed' cuz I was obviously getting comfortable in what I was doing.

WPIML tells me "It ain't require to WANNA do something to DO it.....DO IT ANYWAY" There's a whole lotta simple truth in that. And then he wraps it up with a shrug and a meek "If that's what you believe G-d wants you to do......".....which just irritates the by-jeepers outta me cuz he dang well KNOWS that ain't what I believe the Big Guy wants me doing.
Yeah......LOLOL.......double whammy kinda guy he is....it's quite effective with me.

I'll stop looking under couch cushions and blaming the world around me and take a good LONG and HARD look at me.
Gawddddddddd....I just LOVE when people post something that fits for me and I have to look at ME.

Couldn't we just go back to tattling to MOM about you flashing your undies on the world wide web? :-/

HAHAhaha..... Sorry.....just ONE MORE deflection before I do some serious looking at mememe! ;-) HAD to, dontchaknow!

I am soooooooooooo glad you went over to Jen's and read her post, wasn't it awesome? It immediately hit home for me; causing me to think and feel. And then write something.

" But I have a 'few' human qualities to me, apparently. And on occasion, I do hand over MY happiness, MY self esteem, MY confidence......sheeeeeeshhhhh......how insane is THAT?!"

We ALL do that at times. And I shared this post as a reminder to myself as well.

"WPIML tells me "It ain't require to WANNA do something to DO it.....DO IT ANYWAY" There's a whole lotta simple truth in that."

I LOVE THAT! You've spoken of WPIML several times on your blog and every time you share something that he's said, I think, "Yeah...he's right!" Not always easy to do, but I can see that he IS right.

"I'll stop looking under couch cushions and blaming the world around me and take a good LONG and HARD look at me.

  27. Confidence is key, especially when interviewing for a job. Lemme tell ya, there's no more nerve-wracking experience than going for a job where ten other applicants are trying to snake the position out from under each other. It's brutal out there...

Now, I have tons of confidence, but not nearly enough to get me on a stage in front of people. That requires confidence *and* bravery. That, my friend, is a rare combination Kudos to all actors who gladly step into the spotlight!

  33. Ron, another thought-provoking, heartfelt post, which I LOVE!

I also loved Jen’s post and see why it inspired you to write yours!

Confidence is a rare commodity, that’s why we must find it within ourselves and when we do, cherish it like a rare precious gem because as you said some people “don’t want us to “be” confident. They somehow believe that if we’re confident, it will make them less confident.”

That is really sad. Everyone should feel confident since there is an abundance of it! Those who aren’t confident are missing out on one of life’s best emotions! It enhances our happiness, making our lives more complete—making us shine more. When we shine others notice and it helps to make them shine (as we’ve said before in another post).

I think the best way to achieve a good healthy dose of self-confidence is to be YOURSELF and not worry about what others think. Every one of us is special. There is no one else on earth like US and we need to believe in ourselves and treat ourselves special, because we ARE. And if someone tries to put us down, we need to treat ourselves like we would a good friend—with kindness and gentleness…and love.

Great post, Ron, I hope it resonates with others because it’s so important!

    Have a fantabulous week!

  35. Excellent post Ron, it is so easy to let others make you feel like you are unimportant, as you mentioned a lot will never validate us because they don't want us to feel good about ourselves, too bad some have to make you feel bad for them to feel good.

the majority of people I have met through blogging are great, and I do enjoy writing, sometimes I have to walk away but coming back is so rewarding especially when I see good friends like you never gave up on me.

"...a lot will never validate us because they don't want us to feel good about ourselves, too bad some have to make you feel bad for them to feel good."

    You're so correct!

And that's sad, because if these people only realized that surrounding yourself with confident people, only inspires you to BE more confident.

For me, I love to surround myself with talented and confident people...LOVE it. Because it's like an 'energy' that's contagious.

  43. hmmm, how timely to read this, at a juncture when I am feeling much less enthused by writing or even reading blogs. Not sure what the outcome might be, but I did decide not to be judgmental with myself during this slowdown. Probably a good approach to anything - withhold judgment and allow events to unfold organically.

let me express my gratitude for your message. As always, it's a message with many layers of complexity and your friendly style of delivery allows me (all of us, actually) to take away the wisdom that I/we need just now.

  44. Hey there Diane~

"I am feeling much less enthused by writing or even reading blogs. Not sure what the outcome might be, but I did decide not to be judgmental with myself during this slowdown. Probably a good approach to anything - withhold judgment and allow events to unfold organically."

Yes, I know exactly how you feel because I've gone through the same thing with not only blogging, but other things as well. And I think it's wise not judge yourself. I think with blogging and creativity, we sometimes go through periods of creative gestation; when our creative energy is shifting and moving us into a whole new area (or topic) of creativity.

    You're right...allow it unfold organically.

With me, I intuitively know when I need to stand back and wait, and then know when I need to give myself a little push to move forward.

But we're all different. So honor yourself....X

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing yourself on this post, girl. I ALWAYS love reading your thoughts, feelings, and input.

Hope you're enjoying a faaaaaabulous weekend!

Much X to you and Cristybella!
