I adore ladybugs.

I think they’re the most precious and sweetest-looking little beetle.

Cute! Cute! Cute!

To me, a ladybug always looks so happy and joyful as they fly around; filling the atmosphere with their vibrant and festive polka dotted wings. And their happiness and joy is contagious. Admit it, what do you do when you first see a ladybug? You SMILE.

And I find it the most magical experience to have a ladybug gently land on me. I somehow feel blessed, as if a celestial being has visited me because (and I know this sounds odd but), the experience feels almost spiritual.

Earlier this week I was thinking about ladybugs, and wondering….

“What do you call a male ladybug?”

Well, I did some research online and discovered a bumper crop of information because apparently I’m not the only one who has wondered this.

Here are some humorous answers I found on a ladybug forum, in which people gave their opinions…
*Laddiebug

*Manlybug

*Hermaphrobug

*Mr. Ladybug

*Dragqueenbug - (this is my personal favorite, because if they’re a male ladybug who does a drag act, then they’re already dressed for the part)

*Shemalebug

*Tranvestibug

*A crossdresser

And after doing more research I discovered that whether it’s female or male, a ladybug is called a LADYBUG (or Ladybird).

The males are slightly smaller than the females but, other than that…they look very similar.

So I thought to myself, the next time I see a bunch of ladybugs in the park, how will I ever differentiate between the females and males?

Oh wait, on second thought, I’ll know how….

Wishing a ladybug lands on you this weekend everyone!

  1. I love your enquiring mind, Ron. I prefer to call them ladybirds rather than ladybugs but I had to smile at the variations in name.... especially Mr Ladybug and Dragqueenbug. Yes, I know it is supposed to be lucky for a ladybird to land on a human. When I was a kid I used to try all ways to get one to come on my hand. Heehee I've always thought I was lucky in life, maybe that's why. May your weekend be blessed with good luck and happiness.

  2. Oh I so agree with you about ladybirds! They are such beautiful creatures and I do always smile when I see one. I like the name 'Laddiebug/bird' for a male - it seems appropriate somehow. :)

Have a great weekend Ron. xx

Yes, in England I read that they prefer calling them Ladybird, which I think is a faaaaabulous name!

    HAHAHAHAHAHHA! Wasn't Dragqueenbug HILARIOUS???

  9. Love this post, Ron! I didn't know they were all called ladybugs. When we were kids my mom used to say this little ditty about ladybugs. It went something like "ladybug, ladybug, sometimes you walk and sometimes you fly..." Can't remember the rest of it, but mom didn't get into the whole gender thing. That's YOUR department, buddy! Take care!

  10. Hey there Rob~

"I didn't know they were all called ladybugs."

Me neither, so I when I did some research this week I was surprised. For some reason, I though that all ladybugs had only ONE gender and they just reproduced via immaculate conception!

    Bwhahahahahhaahahaha!

""ladybug, ladybug, sometimes you walk and sometimes you fly..." Can't remember the rest of it, but mom didn't get into the whole gender thing. "

Oh how cool, I'm gonna look that up online!

Tee, hee....I edited that photo over at PicMonkey.

I've always wondered the difference between a female and male ladybug, and if the males looked different or if you called them something besides, ladybugs. But apparently they're pretty much the same.

    Isn't "Dragqueenbug" hysterical???

"Have you seen my little ladybird on my blog header? I adore them!"

Yes I did! As a matter of fact, I was sooooo thinking of YOU when I wrote this post. I have always wondered why you chose a ladybug in your header as well as the theme for your blog. It's brilliantly original!

Aren't ladybugs just the cutest little things?

"Unfortunately we don't see as many as we used to, so when we do I grab my camera."

We don't see them as much here either. This summer I may have only seen them a couple of times when I was out in the park.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Babs. Have a wonderful weekend!

    Hope you see a ladybug!

I will try and notice the gender of this wonderful little creature the next time I encouter one. And if it is a male and his tiny testes are swing in the wind I will just call him Fred.

I too LOVE ladybugs and always say they are GOOD LUCK—ESPECIIALLY if they land on you!

During the summer I normally have at least one flying around my house… sometimes TWO and I just feel so darn lucky! I don’t know where I came up with that lucky thing, but it sure makes me feel nice and fuzzy inside so I just go with it, and besides, you’re right, there IS something about ladybugs that makes me feel joyful when they fly around! They must have good energy!

  26. Hey Ron, We had a slew of male ladybugs out back a few days ago, Cindy and I were wondering the same thing here as to what they should be called, Cindy said that they should be called Ron.

I asked her how she knew they were male and she picked one up and turned him over, and said yep it's a male, I'm still not sure how she could tell that by looking at the bottom of their feet :^0

  28. Hi Ronnie,
Oh my goodness; how studious you have been; gold star, dude!
I have never stopped to answer the question about this. OK; a ladybug or bird of the male gender is still a ladybug or ladybird.
Your photo made me laugh!! Looks like a dude to me. :)

I see ladybugs all the time in the garden. I have many a time taken one on my finger and placed it among aphids(little plant suckers on roses and flowering plants) or have driven the lawn mower away from one in the grass. (Yes, it is moi who powers the lawn mower here).Because, I would never squish one on purpose.

Happy weekend and enjoy your free time.

    Sending love!!

  35. Awwwww...... I'm one who stalks, waits and tries to get 'em to land on me. LOL True.
Last year we had a nest of them out front and I was excited thinking they'd be around all spring/summer long. Not so! (that's what I get for being a selfish Sally!) Off they went, spreading joy, I'm sure.

They're to be confused with the irritating Japanese Lantern Beetles who are NOT joyful at all--they bite! But they're orange, not red--the little boogers..... They get flicked and told to go about their business.

    Oh!!

And in this household, it's Mister Ladybug!
I name everything so I'm sure when we got up-close and personal it'd be Lawrence or Leo or Lyle....LOL

  40. Heh...I actually like the term "Manlybug". That's so simple it's genius!

What really intrigues me is that you can mail order ladybugs. In five days I can have thousands of ladybugs sitting on my doorstep. And now that I'm thinking about it, that might be a fun thing to do someday. Order a grip of ladybugs, take them to the park with Tyler, and release them.

Now, is there a ladybug "season"?

Yes! I read that on one of the websites I visited. They ship them at the time they go into hibernation. Many schools will order them for Science classes.

What great idea...I think Tyler would LOVE that!

  48. Hahahahaahahahaha!!! I almost CHOKED myself laughing at that cartoon!!

Yes, male ladybirds are still called ladybirds and it's because of the reason for the name; they were called ladybirds after 'Our Lady'. Apparently, in early times, Mary was often depicted in red, not the familiar blue, and the seven spots had some significance in terms of her joys and sorrows. They are called something similar in a LOT of different countries, including 'Mary Beetle' in Germany (can't remember the translation!).
