Well, tomorrow, Ronnie turns 58.

Can you believe that?!?

It’s actually not a bad age if you split the numbers in half because I do feel between 5 and 8 years old.

Funny, because when I was a kid and my mother turned 40, she said, “I know I’m 40 years old now, but I still feel like a teenager.”

At the time, I thought, “Hell woman….you’re OLD!” I didn’t know what she meant until I turned 40 and still felt like a teenager myself.

There is a part of us, that no matter how old we get, stills feel like we did when we were a child.

Yes, you do start to notice how your body shifts and changes as you progress in age. Like, the need for reading glasses, or the need to change your diet in some way, or constantly forgetting why you walked into a room because your memory is only working on 1 GB.

These things will inevitably happen to all of us because it’s a natural part of the physical aging process.

Our hair turns gray and thins; we start to notice lines on our face; our breasts deflate and our testicles hang down to our knees.

But do you know how I honestly feel about those things?

I wouldn’t ever want to trade those things to be a youngster again because back then I didn’t know shit. Yes, my skin was tighter and my reading sight might have been better, but getting older has given me a GREATER vision. Not with my eyes, but with my soul.

I also feel like I have more energy, more passion, and more of a sense of playfulness than I did when I was younger.

Additionally, I feel like I know myself better.

I think the important thing when it comes to aging is to embrace the physical process of things we can’t control. And at the same time, never letting go of the child within because that’s what keeps us forever curious, forever growing, and forever young.

Allowing ourselves to graduate in age.

But also allowing space for the child.

Thank you all for being a BIG part of my life. I look forward to spending my 58th year with you...X

  1. Hey Ron! You and I are about the same age! Well...actually I just turned 54...but close!! I so agree with you about the whole passion thing...Wouldn't it be great if we could have the benefit of all of this wisdom at a younger age! Ah yeah...the good old days! You enjoy yourself on your birthday Ron because YOU deserve it!! Happy, Happy Birthday!! xo

  2. Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns for tomorrow my friend - I hope you have a wonderful day!

I often wish I was 18 again but know what I know now, but that is only because I didn't have any health issues then and was able to dance all night! LOL

  3. 58, get out! you don't look a day over 8. ha! well i wouldn't want to be too much younger, i like the age i am now. slightly wiser, tho not by much, and i don't feel as old as kids would make me seem. yes anything hoovering around 40 and they think that's ancient. i know i did when i was younger, but now that i've reached 40 and beyond, i feel young as if nothing changed. if it weren't for my broken down body, i'd be outside doing wheelies on my bike right now and running up and down the street. really. :)

  6. Hey, Ron, first of all: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BUDDY!!! I wish you nothing but the best on this very special day! You're such a tremendous person with a real zest for life and I'm very happy that I know you--even if it is only in Cyberland.

Secondly, I really appreciate this post. You make some tremendous insights about aging and "never letting go of the child within because that’s what keeps us forever curious, forever growing, and forever young." That's brilliant! And it sure beats the hell out of whining about getting old!

Can't thank you enough for this great post. And I want you out there and party you keester off, buddy, because you deserve it! Happy graduation day and may be forever young!

  7. Happy Birthday, Ron!!!! Oh, man. How much do I love this.... "...but getting older has given me a GREATER vision. Not with my eyes, but with my soul." Wow, so profound you are. I feel perpetually 18! Of course, wish I had the body I had then, but whatever. I'm happy with myself and that's really all that matters.

Hey, if I was with you, we could toast to your birthday with a teeny tiny glass of wine and then promptly fall asleep. That too comes with age, eh?

Have a fun day, my friend!

  8. Happy Birthday to you! You should go celebrate the way someone between 5 and 8 would...getting any ideas?

  9. The expression 'older and wiser' comes to mind, and how true that is. 58 huh? Dare I work out the difference between you and me...haha. Remind me what it was like to be 58...

Love your rationalisations, Ron, on all subjects. Long may they continue. Happy birthday, as Jeanne said 'you deserve it'.

  10. Hey there Jeanne~

"..Wouldn't it be great if we could have the benefit of all of this wisdom at a younger age!"

Yup, but I guess that's part of the aging process. The 'life experiences' that eventually bring us to that wisdom.

Thanks so much for stopping by and for birthday wishes, dear lady. Have a spectacular week!

X to you and the girls!

Isn't that the truth? If we only THEN what we know NOW, we could have bi-passed so many frustrations. But hey, I guess that's part of the growth process of aging.

And m'dear, you still look faaaaaaaaaaabulous! You're such a pretty lady.

Have a super week and thank you for stopping by!

Yes, that would be AWESOME! I have a very soft work schedule the second week of October (the week of the 7th), so perhaps we can make a plan to meet up for lunch one of those days.

Is SURE does! And I think you're that way too. In just knowing you these past two years, I've watched you grow, take chances, and stretch yourself. And at they same time, never losing your playful childlike quality because I can feel it in your words within your posts.

  19. Happy Happy Birthday, Ron! Love both the photos of you. How funny you are!

"but getting older has given me a GREATER vision. Not with my eyes, but with my soul." What wonderful insight! You inspire me as age myself. Gosh, I always think of you as younger than what you are because of the playful way you write.

Have a wonderful day tomorrow, Ron. Happy Birthday!

  20. Oh what a wonderful up-coming day tomorrow! The day of YOUR birth. The day our world was blessed with YOU!

“At the time, I thought, “Hell woman….you’re OLD!”...”

I think we all felt that way looking at our parents (or any adult!) as youngsters. Now that I’m 47 and my parents are 69 and 70, I think…WOW, WE’RE young! Although my mom and dad ACT younger than me. They are so active—I can’t keep up with them! I adore being around them and watching him too. They give me hope that I’ll have a happy, healthy life when I’m “mature”.

I wouldn’t want to go back to my twenties or even thirties either, Ron. I look back and think “Shit, girl, you were dumb!” I’m sure I’ll look back on my forties in a similar fashion because, as you said, age gives us greater vision!

I would like to find a way (besides surgery) to help the sagging and wrinkling, though. I may want to live to be at least one hundred, but that doesn't mean I want to look it! ;-)

    Happy Birthday my dear friend!

    ((YOU))

P.S. I’m sorry I haven’t been around lately. I missed commenting on a few of your posts :-( I'm so run down. Although I’m taking my vitamins! I just need to find a way to balance what little free time I have right now AND learn how to de-stress. I'm in a constant state of worry right now and it's wearing me down. I have to change that and quick!

  21. Hola Denise~

Thank you for your sweet birthday wishes, girl.

I edited those photos over at PicMonkey last night and had so much fun. I'm literally addicted to that website. I spent over TWO hours there and had to PRY myself away because now they have a whole HALLOWEEN photo editing theme. FUN!

"Gosh, I always think of you as younger than what you are because of the playful way you write."

Funny, I had a reader who used to read my blog several years ago, and when she found out I was in my 50's, she said, "I thought you were around my age....I'm in my 20's."

    Bwhahahahahhahaha!

Thank you for stopping by and have a fantabulous week!

  22. sending the happiest birthday wishes to you! I appreciate your essay today so very much. Perhaps it's not so much the birthdays that matter as much as what we do in between the birthdays. Sharing, connecting, learning, creating and caring. Wait --- that all happens here! Happy birthday Ron, I'm forever grateful I met you through the internet. You've enriched my life.

  23. Hey there Pam!

Aw, thank you, dear friend :)

" Now that I’m 47 and my parents are 69 and 70, I think…WOW, WE’RE young! Although my mom and dad ACT younger than me. They are so active—I can’t keep up with them! I adore being around them and watching him too. They give me hope that I’ll have a happy, healthy life when I’m “mature”."

Isn't it funny how that happens? You don't realize how young you were until you get older - HA! You're parents are a perfect example of what I mean in saying that as I've gotten old, I actually feel MORE energetic. I think the thing about aging too, is that we don't get into the mindset of, "Okay...now I have to retire from life because I'm older." The more active we stay, the more energy we have.

"I would like to find a way (besides surgery) to help the sagging and wrinkling, though. I may want to live to be at least one hundred, but that doesn't mean I want to look it! ;-)"

I always say, "I don't want to look younger, I just want to look the best I can for the age that I am."

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a FANTABULOUS week!

Happy Birthday to YoUUUuuuuuUUUUU ♫♪ (and me!) !!!!!

Yaknow.....I spent a whole lotta time trying to get the privileges of an adult--takin' 'em even. And once I got to 'adulthood', I was 'too cool'. TOO freaking cool to do the fun things. And then.......something happened and I changed my mind.
Innit just like me to need that 'external something' to get my attention and point out what's probably really, really, REALLY obvious to other people.
Life's precious and it's SUPPOSE to be FUN.

I gave up the 'too cool' club and decided **** 'em--I'll be who I was created TO be and celebrate that I get to be on this planet.

*laughing* And that's pretty much how it's remained for me. I'd hate to have to 'relearn' that lesson--it was painful enough learning it the first time, tyvm.

You're right....it's cooler to just be where you really ARE--and way funner.

And you're one of the people on this planet that I know 'gets it'. Ain't about who you know, what you know and whatcha have. It's about being all you ARE and loving.
You do both really, really well.
I'm proud to call you friend.
And I'm proud enough to share my birthday month with ya! LOL

    Bubbles! Sidewalk chalks!! Trolls!! Barbies!!

This, my friend, is an epiphany that many people simply never get, or choose to ignore. Those are the people who walk blindly through life, doing the bare minimum to get through the day. They never look within or without to learn, and in the end learn nothing that life has to teach them.

And then there's people like you, who get it, are in tune, and strive to understand things greater than themselves. You, my friend, are a rare breed. Congrats!

  59. Oh DAMMIT... I MISSED your birthday!!! DAMMIT! Will you forgive me, my dear friend? If I lived near you, I would show up at your home with a homemade cake, a birthday barbie, some new crystal wine glasses and a pair of droopy testicle holders. I would get them at the same place I get my bras for droopy ta-tas! Happy Birthday Ron... and many many more! XXXOOO!

  61. I hope all your birthday wishes came true, my friend. I agree with you about age. Life just keeps getting better. Although I have become one of those people who say "Youth is wasted on the young," you couldn't pay me to relive those angst-filled years of trying to figure out who the hell I am again. Besides, we may be getting older, but we'll always be immature. :)

A-MEN!!!!!!!!! When I think back to how confused and angst I was back then, there is no way in hell I would EVER want to go back either.

"Besides, we may be getting older, but we'll always be immature. :)"

    HA! You said it, Jayne!

Thanks so much for stopping by. Hope you're having an awesome week!

  63. Here via Bijoux. I have been posting about my birthday, too, having just hit 50. Honestly I have mixed feelings about it - I wouldn't trade, either, but sometimes... Still, I'm glad to be healthy and here, and I do feel extremely grateful for all the experiences I've had so far.

A belated happy birthday to you!

Yes, that's the thing....you finally get to the point where you just sorta relax into your life; grateful for the experiences, being healthy, and knowing more about yourself.

    You're gonna LOVE your 50's!

Again, thank you for stopping by. Have a terrific weekend!
