There comes a time in the lives of certain Catholic school attendee’s, when they consider becoming either a priest or a nun.

Yeah I know, for all the complaining I’ve shared over these past 6 years, in which I’ve expressed to you how much I disliked going to Catholic school, there was a time when I actually considered becoming a “man of the cloth.”

No, allow me to correct myself. Not a man of the cloth, but rather a “man of the habit.”

Yes, I wanted to become a MALE nun, which I knew would be impossible. However, I was utterly fascinated by the way a nun dressed, more so than a priest. I always thought it would be kind of cool to wear a nifty headdress and a floor-length gown, with a set of long-hanging rosary beads dangling from the waist, which always made a loud clanky noise every time a nun walked down the school corridor; causing all the students to shake in paralyzing fear they were going to get cracked over the knuckles with a wooden ruler, or be made to stand outside in the freezing snow and clap chalkboard erasers to clean them, as a means of cleansing away their HORRIBLE SINS.

Oh, how I dreamed of having such divine power!

And being someone who glorifies the color black, that only added more intrigue to the whole ensemble.

I mean come on ladies, admit it, is there anything more classic and chic than a simple black dress with a built-in white bib?

*can you imagine eating LOBSTER in this?

My thoughts of becoming a nun all started when I saw the movie, The Trouble With Angels, while I was still in Catholic grammar school. It was one of the only films the Catholic Archdiocese allowed us to watch during our annual "movie day", because it starred, Rosalind Russell (as Mother Superior), and didn’t contain any nudity or curse words. It also starred, Haley Mills and June Harding (as students).

It is a charming movie about two young ladies who attend an all-girls Catholic high school, with the option of becoming nuns after they graduate.

The story takes you a humorous journey through all the trouble the two girls get themselves into, being sentenced to detention (washing pots) almost every week.

Towards the end of the film, you begin to see that Mary Clancy (Haley Mills) is experiencing some kind of epiphany because she feels spiritually called to the vocation, which is totally unexpected because she seems the least likely candidate to become a nun.

And I have to say, the ending is very touching.

Yeah, so after I saw this movie, I decided I wanted to go into the nunhood.

I even used to practice being a nun (hiding in my bedroom with the door closed and listening to Bobby Sherman records) by placing one of my black T-shirts on top of my head, pretending that it was a nun’s headdress.

Hmm…but then I had my own epiphany about becoming a nun.

You see, it really wouldn't work.

Because my habit would also include a Marlboro Light…

Wishing you nunsense weekend everyone!
X

  1. Bonjour Ronny(err, Ronette),
You got me onto a wonderful laughing mode. OMG; the sisterhood will never be the same since sister Ronette and her Marlboros!!
I do not have the same educational background as you, hon. I was public school from K-12... my parents only saw the necessity of perhaps putting my brother in private school at one point(it naver came through).
I think that there are entire generations of adults who are no terrorised at the thought of Catholic school of years past. Religion is sadly lost on on many of these people. They were imposed rigid religious practices as children. Not to speak of fear and anger...
I never heard about "The trouble with angels". But, it sounds like it is indeed stamped with the "Nun seal of approval". Haley Mills did a lot of the Disney films and I remember her.
Thank you for sharing on these very personal memories... Yes babe; black so becomes ya ;)

  2. Church of England school for me, Ron, so I wasn't plagued by desires to be a monk, or whatever... grins. But I did see nuns around the area and it often struck me that a lot could go on under those robes. Terrific hiding places for crime minded individuals. I'm kind of glad you got out of the idea of becoming a male nun, you're so much nicer as you are.

As an adult I had dealings with nuns when I visited families on probation and I was always amazed at their poor attitude to those not so well off. That''s when I realised that a lot of the 'stories' were true.

    Fab Friday Felicitations

  3. I think you would have made a wonderful nun! Not having been brought up in the Catholic faith, I wanted to be a ballet dancer not a nun. ;)

  4. Lobster? How about a spaghetti dinner? I'm not Catholic, so I probably didn't even know what a nun was till I was about 12! I thought it was a bizarre get up and I also thought calling someone who is not your dad, 'father' was weird too!

Maybe they aren't smoking Marlboros, but I bet they're throwing back plenty of Frangelico! Lol, have a fun weekend, Ron?

  5. Oh...things are frightfully Catholic in this area. I'm a short drive from the Abbey/Monastery/Convent in any direction I point the car--'cept for south--which is where all the heathens reside, apparently. ROFL

I visit the Monastery at least once a year--it's a wonderful place that just exudes peace and spirituality. I go, and wander, sit and visit and don't wanna leave. They have a very disciplined schedule they keep. Very quiet--ougtha be, it's Trappist. And it's one of the few places that I actually just SHUSH. (yes.....a very difficult task in other places--but (wow!!) not there!)

I quite like the t-shirt over the head look! And I don't see how the 'habit' should interfere--I think you're already being 'used' and it doesn't. So I'm good with you keeping that t-shirt there. Okay....you might get a few stares going to work, but that just opens more doors! Or....closes them as people stare from behind 'em locked..... LOL

I remember the movie! OH my gosh. I'm impressed you got to WATCH movies. Notsomuch calling up a memory of getting to do that in school--but I do recall the principal having a 'board of education'!
Funny the things that pop up in that brain of mine, huh? ;-)
You have an awesome weekend, sir.
And can I tell ya I LOVE the photo for the 'photography' link. Amazing shot! And the Barbies still make me smile....

  6. I just about shit myself when I saw that first pic of you!!!

Oh boy, you'd have turned the Catholic church on its ear had you made it to sisterhood!

  8. Ron, the two photos of you are so funny, I'm at my work laughing so hard! And the part about eating lobster was hysterical. I never went to Catholic school, but a few of my girlfriends did and the stories they shared were all about how strict the nun's were.

Even though you make a great looking nun, I'm glad you didn't enter nunhood because we would be missing out on all this fun!

Have a wonderful weekend, Sister Ronette.

  9. Bonjour Barb~

" OMG; the sisterhood will never be the same since sister Ronette and her Marlboros!!"

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA! Can you imagine ME as a nun?!?!?!

" I was public school from K-12... my parents only saw the necessity of perhaps putting my brother in private school at one point(it naver came through)."

Yes, it was the same for my brother Tom. By the time he went to school, my parents placed him in a private school because one of my mother's aunts (who WAS a nun) recommended NOT sending him to Catholic school.

"I think that there are entire generations of adults who are no terrorised at the thought of Catholic school of years past. Religion is sadly lost on on many of these people. They were imposed rigid religious practices as children. Not to speak of fear and anger..."

    Exactly!

"I never heard about "The trouble with angels". But, it sounds like it is indeed stamped with the "Nun seal of approval". Haley Mills did a lot of the Disney films and I remember her."

It actually is a very cute movie. I have the film on VHS and watch it from time to time. And OMG...it brings back SUCH memories!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fantabulous weekend!

  11. I had a Bobby Sherman album!! Hmm... I think he was leaning against a tree in the cover photo.

So, becoming Sister Ronette, the multi-talented, open-minded, bearded smoking Nun could still happen. Maybe the new Pope could use a fabulous assistant. Send your portfolio to the Vatican! And keep me in mind for the job of your assistant. I've got the right name anyway. Mary Catherine .... I think my mother named me after a Nun. Oh, but then she saw my personality and probably wept. hehe

That movie only sounds slightly familiar. I must have seen bits of it years ago. Hayley Mills, I do remember her from 'The Parent Trap'. That was a cute movie.

    Have a nice weekend, Ron!

Bwhaahhahahahahaha! OMG...that was beyond hysterical!!!! And do you know what's funny? I used to wonder WHAT they had under those robes myself because they were always 'fiddling' with stuff!!

"As an adult I had dealings with nuns when I visited families on probation and I was always amazed at their poor attitude to those not so well off. That''s when I realised that a lot of the 'stories' were true."

Yes, sad but true. I'm sure there are some churches that are not this way, but many of them are all about the MONEY. They've turned into a BUSINESS/CORPORATION.

Oh yes, and you HAD to refer to them as "father."

"Maybe they aren't smoking Marlboros, but I bet they're throwing back plenty of Frangelico!"

Bwhahahahahahaha! You are SO right! And what I always found very contradictory was that the priests were permitted to smoke AND drink, but the nun's couldn't do either - talk about chauvinistic rules!

Yes, back when I went it was VERY strict, but supposedly it has changed - less discipline. In fact, you can't even tell a nun from a regular person anymore because they no longer wear habits.

Yes, there have been several monasteries/churches that I have visited in which I actually enjoyed spending quiet time in meditation. We have a church close by which is "Franciscan" and I must say, there is a very different "feel" to their order.

"Okay....you might get a few stares going to work, but that just opens more doors! Or....closes them as people stare from behind 'em locked..... LOL"

  26. Ron,

I loved Bobby Sherman! I remember buying cereal just because it had a Bobby Sherman 45 on the back of it. Also, I spent 8 years in Catholic school and I always wondered if nuns really had hair. It was intriguing. I even considered becoming a priest, because the sex I wanted to have was forbidden, so why not just go without?

Thankfully, here I am, a recovering Catholic, enjoying the life I never thought possible with the man I never thought would love me. I am blessed.

  38. Man oh man you crack me up. Yes, I too being a product of a Catholic education wanted to be part of the clergy. I went so far as getting an application for the local seminary. I was going to be the best priest' hey maybe even Pope. (Pope Dave the 1st). But it was at the same time my hormones were raging. I discovered I had a ruler of my own behind the zipper of my black pants. I too had the desire to get into the habit if you catch my drift. So I made a choice the priesthood or hornyhood I opted for hornyhood. I even have a crush on a beautiful young nun when I was in high school. (not too many of them; beautiful and young). I would have wonderful dreams of me, the priest and her, the nun going off to start our own religion. Ah wonderful times of youth. Then I was mortified by these thoughts and just knew that I was on my way to hell for just thinking about this. Now I know that God is sitting in his big leather chair and laughing his ass off about such kinky thoughts of a young man. So needless to say I did not become a priest and I did not hook up the Sister Monica. But I think that I did create the my own religion. The Religion where all things and every one is the product and the example of unconditional love. All we have to do is let Love be our way. There is no way to live but in love.

  42. You kill me, Ron. Really you do. Your writing is funny enough, but then I practically choke to death when I scroll down and see your hilarious pictures. I think I've told you once before, but you have -- BY FAR -- the funniest blog post pictures I've seen anywhere.

  43. Seriously? I always thought the habits were kind of hideous. But I love the sweatshirt version on you! That's too funny.

YOu know what's odd? Even though I wasn't Catholic and never went to Catholic school, there was a time when I was young that I thought it would be cool to be a monk. Not a nun, a monk.

  44. Helloooooooo Secret Agent Woman!

Great to see ya, my friend! I just saw on my reader that you had posted, so I'll be by tonight to have a read. Glad your back, you were missed!

" I always thought the habits were kind of hideous. But I love the sweatshirt version on you! That's too funny."

    HA! Aren't I a silly man?

"Even though I wasn't Catholic and never went to Catholic school, there was a time when I was young that I thought it would be cool to be a monk. Not a nun, a monk."

No, I don't think that's odd at all because about 6 years ago, I had thoughts of joining a Franciscan order of priests that were not really priests, but more of an outside order of people who wanted to sever in the order, but still live their outside lives. Needless to say, I never did it.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Hope you had a great time off.

  45. I think you would have been a wonderful nun and exactly what the Catholic church needed. Oh well, you're doing God's work in your own way by sharing all of your thoughts with us. Plus, you can still throw on the habit if you feel like it.

  46. Hey Jen~

"I think you would have been a wonderful nun and exactly what the Catholic church needed."

You think? I'd be one CRAZY nun!

" Oh well, you're doing God's work in your own way by sharing all of your thoughts with us. Plus, you can still throw on the habit if you feel like it."

    HA! Exactly!

Thanks for stopping by, girl! Have a super week!

  47. Hellooooooooooo Katherine!

You're a Catholic school attendee too????

OMG...another one of us - HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

No, I haven't seen the movie you shared, but I will go over to You Tube tonight to see if I can find it because it sounds HILARIOUS!!!!

Thanks for letting me know, my friend!

  48. Bwahaha! Yeah, that last pic did it for me. Heh.

Thankfully I was spared the catholic school route. I personally don't think I could have survived in such an environment, what with the rulers across the knuckles and the hail Mary's. Heck, the only thing I know about Catholic school is Cheech & Chong's "Sister Mary Elephant" routine.

Now that I think about it, in high school I was more into Cheech & Chong and The Firesign Theater's album "A Child's Garden Of Grass" (side one was hilarious) then I was into homework. But then again, school bored me. Thank God computers became prevalent, providing me with an outlet and an eventual career!

You are sooooooooooo fortunate because the only thing good about having gone to Catholic school is that those of us who have...can now BLOG about it - HA!

" Heck, the only thing I know about Catholic school is Cheech & Chong's "Sister Mary Elephant" routine."

YES! YES! YES! I used watch Cheech & Chong movies too!

"I was more into Cheech & Chong and The Firesign Theater's album "A Child's Garden Of Grass"'

    HILARIOUS title!!!!

"But then again, school bored me. Thank God computers became prevalent, providing me with an outlet and an eventual career!"

Honestly, I was the same way. School BORED me to no end. And back then, we didn't even have computers. The only we had we're electric typewriters - Whoop de doo!

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Hope you had a SUPER long weekend!

X to you, Karin, and Mr. Tyler!

  50. Hey Sister Ronette, I wanted you to know that I saw The Trouble With Angels last night and enjoyed the hell out of it. I found it on sale at an fye near my apt. They had one copy, so I grabbed it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Robert that's AWESOME!!!!! Isn't it a FUN movie? I have it on VHS, but I really need to see if the F.Y.E. where I live has a copy on DVD. Glad you enjoyed, buddy!

  52. "I always thought it would be kind of cool to wear a nifty headdress and a floor-length gown, with a set of long-hanging rosary beads dangling from the waist, which always made a loud clanky noise every time a nun walked down the school corridor;"

OMG! ME TOO! And I'm a Jew!
But I have ALWAYS wanted to dress up like a Nun at least ONCE in my life.

Hmmm… I've never seen or even heard of the movie, The Trouble With Angels. And now I'm all curious about it.

I am DYING over your habit with a Marlboro Light in your hand!

PS: I still put t-shirts on my head like that and pretend it's hair.

You look so good as a nun. I almost wish they'd let you join up ... but then the Jake Thackray song comes to mind. If you haven't heard 'Sister Josephine', do hop on over to YouTube and listen. You'll wet yourself with laughter, I promise you.

"I am DYING over your habit with a Marlboro Light in your hand!"

Tee-hee...thank you, my friend. Don't I make one crazy-looking nun?

" If you haven't heard 'Sister Josephine', do hop on over to YouTube and listen. You'll wet yourself with laughter, I promise you."

I tried clicking on the link you shared, but for some reason it says that the video is blocked in certain country's. I will try to see if I can find a different video with the same name on You Tube later tonight.

    Thanks for stopping by, Jay!

Just search for 'Sister Josephine' by Jake Thackray. He has a strong accent - Yorkshire I think - but you should be able to understand him. Mostly. It really is a riot. ;)

Have you seen Change of Ha it with Mary Tyler Moore and Elvis? I love the scene where she looks back and forth between Jesus and Elvis. Which one to choose!!

  59. I hear Father Guido Sarducci is a frontrunner for the job of next Pope. If that's true, surely there'll be room in the Vatican for you to be his Mother Superior.

  61. ron you are too much and always make me laugh. i've never seen that movie, of course, but will add it to my list - though i don't have netflix anymore, maybe they will have it at the library. why do nuns wear that garb, really? what's the significance? the ONLY reason why i want to wear the outfit is because when the cop pulls me over for speeding and he actually sees who it is and what i'm wearing, i want the pleasure of saying, "what".

do nuns get tickets. heck do they drive.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hey there V Girl!

" the ONLY reason why i want to wear the outfit is because when the cop pulls me over for speeding and he actually sees who it is and what i'm wearing, i want the pleasure of saying, "what"."

    Bwhahahahahahaha! That was HILARIOUS!

And come to think of it, I wonder if nun's ever GET tickets, or are they pardoned because they're "of the habit?"

Yes, now they do drive because I've met several nun's who have cars and lead everyday normal lives like you and I. However, when I was a kid, I don't think they did. Heck, back then they weren't even permitted to have a mirror in their rooms because it caused VANITY - HA!

Thanks for stopping by, girl! Hope you're having FABU weekend!

P.S. don't you love the yo-yo weather we're having? one day it's 75, the next it's 35 and snowing. but hey, I'd take the cold over the heat any day :)

  64. Ha ha ha ha! I love that bottom photo :)

I remember the nuns at our school. They were very strict. Thankfully, I was a good girl and didn't ever get punished by a nun. My physical punishments came later, at the older school.
