SURPRISE!

Yup….I spent the past five weeks giving this blog a bit of new interior decorating. I usually do a blog design makeover once a year, which technically should be this coming April, which is when I did my last one. But hey, it’s February, so that’s close enough.

I actually started this project last month when I had off, but just finished putting on the final touches this week.

Once again, I used a template that was designed by Chicablogger and customized it to suit my own needs. She really does an AWESOME job in designing both Blogger and Wordpress templates, which are easy to use and customize. So again…thank you Claudia!

Like my previous template, I wanted something that was bright, fun, and would also have some of the same features, like: a slider, footer, and a nice wide sidebar and content section area to accommodate large photos. I also wanted one that came with a readmore feature.

Well, let me tell you…it wasn’t easy to find. It took me FIVE weeks.

Yet, even with this template, I had to adjust the widths of the content section and sidebar section, but it was really easy. I also tweaked things here and there.

The navigation system on this template is similar to my last one, so you should find it easy to use. The only thing different is that the navigation bar is now above the header - along with my feed burner icon.

Oh yeah, and one more thing. I normally like to use Verdana font on my blog because it’s seems to be the easiest to read. This template came with Helvetica, but the font size seems large enough to read, so I decided to keep it. But please let me know how it reads for YOU because that is the most important thing on a blog – readability.

Is it big enough, dark enough, etc.

Before I decided to use this new template, I viewed it on my desktop computer (which has a large screen), and my laptop (which has a small screen), and it looked good on both. So I’m hoping it presents itself good on your computer screens as well.

If you can believe this, the hardest time I had with this template was making the header banner with my blog name on it. Because no matter what I did, I couldn’t figure out a way to make the background transparent so that all you would see would be the lettering.

It was a friggin' BITCH, but I finally found a way to do it. Praise baby Jesus!!!!

Also, you will notice that I changed my blog caricature at the top of the sidebar. I created him over at Face You Manga. So, that’ll be my new caricature face with this template.

Anyhoo, there you have it folks – a new interior design for Vent.

Please make yourself at home and enjoy!

And have a super-duper weekend everyone!

  1. Hi Ronnie,
Yes, I did the double take! Very nice. And look at that lil' dude hogging the jumbo popcorn.. Cutie pie :)
To return to the new Vent...
A bit of red around the title that sets off the grey beautifully. I also like a sober background( I did grey, too, as you may recall).
    Readability and characters, check.
Don't you find that when you start a blog, you get excited and add all sorts of widgets and gadgets but later tend to downscale? That is how I am now.
    Trying to keep it simple!

Wishing you a happy week end and lots of joy.

  2. *stamping foot* I WANT ONE!
It's really nice, Ron. I am, as you can see, totally jealous. The font is easy to read and I was happy with the colour. But oh that header is something else... eye catching as well as being attractive. And I LOVE the new caricature.

I can't believe it's Friday already. Hope you have ave a great weekend.

  7. HOLY cow--talk about a surprise!! But it's a pleasant one.
    Yes--easily read.
Yes--very easy to navigate.......'cept.....the darn slideshow that gives me the post options zips through and I can't quite respond that fast! (just sayin' I'm slow.....LOL)
    I like it.
I'm going to miss the old you--but as long as the new you has popcorn, I'm good with it! ;-)
The red, black and gray makes it all pop, btw. Very bold header--made me go 'whoaa......' when it popped up. (so VERY worth the effort!)

Yup. I LIKE it! And I like that you're such a brave, caring soul.
    *laughing*
Trust me--if it wasn't read-able, I'd be the first in line to kvetch about it! ;-)

    Ya done GOOD!

"And look at that lil' dude hogging the jumbo popcorn.. Cutie pie :)"

Tee, hee....isn't he cute? I found that "avatar creator" on the web earlier this week and had so much fun playing around with it.

    "Readability and characters, check."

Great, glad to hear that because the readability was my primary concern when trying out a new font.

"Don't you find that when you start a blog, you get excited and add all sorts of widgets and gadgets but later tend to downscale? That is how I am now.
    Trying to keep it simple!"

Exactly! And the thing about widgets and gadgets is that the more you have, the slower the page download.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a happy weekend!

Thank you. Glad you like and that it's readable.

If you ever decide to use a template from Chicablogger, I think you'll find them really cool. She also offers a variety to choose from. There are not many people who can design templates and work properly with Blogger. Claudia is truly one of the most detailed and accurate web designers that I have found. AND her templates are FREE to use and customize.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a grrrrrrrreat weekend! Yes, can you believe it's already Friday!?!?

Thank you. Glad to hear it's readable because that was my main concern. I've tried using the new template designer with Blogger, but for some reason I can't get it to work properly for me if I need to adjust different things within the HTML code.

Actually, customizing a template is very easy. I've taught myself little things here and there over the years by just investigating how other people do it. I never thought I would EVER be interesting in web design because I'm NOT a technical person at all. But there is a certain amount of creativity involved, so I think that's why I ended up getting so interested.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a wonderful weekend!

"......'cept.....the darn slideshow that gives me the post options zips through and I can't quite respond that fast! (just sayin' I'm slow.....LOL)"

Yes, the slider on this template runs a bit faster than on my last one. I need to see if I can slow it down somehow. However, I didn't finish setting it up yet, where you can click on the photos and have them take you to the various categories. I will be doing that sometime this weekend.

"I'm going to miss the old you--but as long as the new you has popcorn, I'm good with it! ;-)"

I know, but I still kept him on my computer, so that I can use him again in the future.

  27. I like it a lot! Great redesign, and it reads just fine to me. Helvetica is a popular font, so I'd stick with that.

Oddly enough, I've been thinking of a blog redesign, too. About once a year I start itching for something new...even though I like what I have! Change is good, right? I'll just keep an eye out for any new themes that come along and strike my fancy.

  29. Go Dude! WOW, I really like this new design a lot, Ron. And as others have shared, the font reads well and easily. I like that this is mainly black and white with some red and grey thrown in. Bright and clean.

  30. Hey Ho Robert~

Much thanks, buddy. Glad to hear you like it and that it reads well. I was so apprehensive about trying this new font because I so enjoy Verdana because (for me) it seemed like the easiest to read. However, I really like the Helvetica font.

Years ago, I had a primarily all black and white blog design with some red in it and really liked it. So, I thought I'd go back to it.

"The popcorn is just too perfect."

HA! I was so freakin' excited when I saw that I could add different accessories to the caricature, and when I saw the popcorn...I died laughing.

finding a theme or a new look is hard work. i'm never happy because there's always one thing i want to change about it but can't unless i pay someone to do it and well it's just not THAT serious (cheap, cheap, cheap),so i live with it. glad you found something you like.

"my eye, loves red and is always demands attention. the gray background works well with the red too"

I like how Claudia combined the black, white, grey and red together because it's a nice and clean look. I had those colors waaaaaay back when I first started this blog and loved them, so I thought I'd try it again.

"your avatar/caricature is just too cute. i'm going to look at the site and see what i can find."

You'll LOVE it because you can create your own little face, and add clothes, a background, accessories, etc. You'll have so much fun!

"finding a theme or a new look is hard work. i'm never happy because there's always one thing i want to change about it but can't unless i pay someone to do it and well it's just not THAT serious (cheap, cheap, cheap),so i live with it. "

Yup, I know exactly what you mean because I had the hardest time finding one that had all the things I wanted. I was going to pick a different one than this, but like you said, there were things I wanted to change but couldn't because they were already built into the template. However, this one was more adaptable so that's why I chose it. That's one of the main reasons why I stay with Blogger because you can download different templates for free and then adapt them to your liking. On WP you have to pay to do all that unless you self host or pay to customize. I like WP and had a blog with them for a year, but switched back to Blogger because I wanted more freedom.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl, and for your kind words. Have a faaaaaabulous weekend!

    Enjoy your new digs!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hiya Matt~

Thank you. I felt like doing a bit of rearranging last month when I was off, so I went on a search for a new design. I'm really happy with this one because it was so much easier to customize than some of the other ones I was looking at.

"And what I noticed is that is matches the font in your comment section."

Yes, you're absolutely right...it does match the font in my comment section now. And that's one of the reasons I decided to keep it. The older version of Disqus would automatically adjust to the font you were using on your main section, but this new version you have to change something in the code to do that and I'm not quite sure how to do that.

Thanks so much for stopping by, bud. Have a terrific weekend!

Yes, I'm still on Blogger, but the past three templates I've used have been from outside designers who offer their templates to use for free. That's one of the things I love about Blogger, they allow you to download and customize any template. I've learned so much about self-customizing by having my blog here.

Until I'm ready to pay for self-hosting, I'm sticking with Blogger.

  55. Geez...I leave for a few days only to find that you've re-arranged all the furniture, and damn it if I can't find the remote!

But I like it! Looks fantastic! Puts my blog to shame. I need to address my lack of template updates someday. I guess I just need to take the plunge.

Again, it looks great around here, Ron. Great job!

" only to find that you've re-arranged all the furniture, and damn it if I can't find the remote!"

    Bwhahahahahahaha! That cracked me up!!!!

Yeah, I got a bit creative this past week and decided to download and primp a new template. It was work, but I really enjoyed it.

Oh, but I really like your blog template!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Hope you had a great weekend with the family!

  57. The new look of your blog is wonderful, Ron! Simple and very neat, easy to navigate, I like it! I didn't have problem loading it on my laptop using Google Chrome. The font is just fine, I didn't find any problem with it. I like blogs with white backgrounds as I find it more comfortable to read. The couch was comfortable too but I didn't find drinks served for the visitors :)

  58. Greetings Zunnur!

Thank you :) So glad you enjoy the new look. And I'm also glad to hear that you didn't have any problem reading it and that it loaded quickly. Those were my two biggest concerns.

Yes, I too prefer blogs with a white background in the content section because it makes it so much easier to read.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The next time you stop by I'll have a mini bar set up next to the couch, okay?

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Hope you had a super weekend!

  59. As usual, I'm behind in blog reading .. but I'd say, so far, your new digs are totally cool and easy peasy to navigate and read. I'll probably never change my blog as I am not tech savvy at all so will just have to admire those who are, or who teach themselves to be. Great job! I like it. :)

  60. Hiya Mary!

Oh, no worries, my friend. Feel free to stop by whenever you choose.

And thank you. Glad you like it. I was really in the mood to change things up a bit last month, so I decided to do a blog makeover a bit earlier than I normally do each year.

I've learned so much having my blog on Blogger, because it taught me a lot about customizing. Which I NEVER thought I would enjoy, but ended up loving it.

Thank you for stopping by and reading my previous posts. You're a sweetheart!
