For as child-like as I am, I don't watch a lot of cartoons or animated films. But there are two that I worship.

The Jetsons and Toy Story (the first one).

I can still remember the night I went to see Toy Story with a friend of mine in Florida, not ever imagining I would enjoy it as much as I did.

Not only was the computer-animation BEYOND brilliant (such as, the army men), but I also found myself laughing so hard at the hilariously clever dialogue throughout the entire movie.

Truthfully, I think Toy Story was also geared toward adults because much of the quick and subtle humor went over a young child’s head.

I know that anyone who has ever seen this film probably has a favorite character, which is so hard to choose, because they’re all so wonderfully delicious. However, my two favorites were Mr. Potato Head and Buzz Lightyear.

Mr. Potato Head

When I was a kid, I loved playing with Mr. Potato Head, rearranging his body with various eyes, ears, lips, arms, and accessories. My favorite silly thing to do was to place his ears where his eyes belong and his eyes where his ears belong, and also switched his nose and mouth, making him almost look like a Salvador Dali painting.

I think the most ingenuous thing about the movie Toy Story was that they gave Mr. Potato Head a voice, which to me, sounded exactly how I thought he would talk if he were to come alive - with a thick, New York accent - kinda like a New York City cab driver.

I also loved his sarcastic and snarky sense of humor. My favorite Mr. Potato Head moment was when he proceeded to take off his lips; giving an “ass-kissing” gesture.

Every time I see this, I HOWL!

Buzz Lightyear

I have to confess….I’ve always had a ‘boy crush’ on Buzz Lightyear.

I mean come on, have you ever seen such an adorable plastic hunk of man in all your living days? I loved the way Buzz raised his eyebrows whenever he talked. And I also found the little cleft in his chin, so damn cute.

The thing that was so endearing about Buzz was that he took himself so seriously; believing to be a real space ranger on a mission to return to his home planet, rather than an action figure. Yet, I will never forget how it broke my heart when he finally discovered that he was a TOY.

The expression on his face was priceless.

There is a wonderful life lesson in the character of Buzz.

Because regardless that he was a toy, Buzz had the spirit and inner belief that he could accomplish anything.

And because he believed that, he did....

You GO, Buzz!

    Er ... No! *giggling*

I haven't seen the film even though it is repeatedly watched by hubby, who apparently has a fascination for modern cartoons. Me, I go into the other room and read or something 'cause I like the peace and quiet....hahaha.

I sneaked a peak before going off to pay last respects to my aunt ... thank you so much for starting my day on a good note. Happy Monday, my friend.V

  2. I've caught bits of Toy Story when my grandchildren are watching it and it seems like a lot of fun. I remember having a Mr Potato Head when I was a child and I used to LOVE watching the Jetsons on TV too!

  3. I usually didn't enjoy taking my kids to see movies, but Toy Story and Shrek were two I did enjoy. And funny, but I didn't remember the kiss ass scene! That is hilarious. My kids had the Potato Head, Buzz and Dog toys. I just remember them trying to pull that dog around the house, but it's back end would just turn and twist and it never worked. More of a sit on the shelf toy!

  4. I had a Mr. Potato Head when I was a kid. Such a cool toy. And loved, loved the movie. We had a tape of it, of course, since we had young kids when it came out, and I've watched it roughly a bazillion times. When I went to Puerto Rico with someone from Idaho, my ex laughed and said, "Way to o, Idaho!" like Hamm, the piggy bank. And the scene where Buzz realizes he is just a toy - made me cry! There is just so much greatness written into that movie. "Well, good riddance, ya loonie!

  5. Ron, I absolutely LOVE "Toy Story"!!!

The films are funny, but, as you point out, quite touching as the characters learn some of life's harder lessons. Each one of the films has at least one scene that brings me to tears.

You make great observations about Mr. Potato Head and your boy toy crush Buzz Lightyear, who really does have "the spirit and inner belief that he could accomplish anything."

I like Buzz, too, but I'm also a fan of Woody because as we all know, you can never get enough wood!

Oops! I better go now. Great post, buddy. Take care and I'll see you at the movies. To infinity and beyond!!

  6. Ron, I own all the Toy Story movies, but my favorite one is the first. Sometimes on a rainy Saturday afternoon, I will cuddle up with a blanket on the couch with a cup of tea and watch them. Toy Story is one of those movies that just puts you in a happy and sunny mood.

The scene when Buzz finds out he's a toy is such a heart breaker. I actually cried. Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head were hilarious. And the part when he kisses his ass is one that I will sometimes play over and over again. This is a movie that you really need to watch several times to catch all the little nuances that you misssed the first time around.

Fun post. Have a wonderful week, Ron.

    HAHAHHAHAHAAHA! Not your type, hu?

"I haven't seen the film even though it is repeatedly watched by hubby, who apparently has a fascination for modern cartoons."

As I shared, I'm not that keen on cartoons or animated films, but for some reason, Toy Story is one that instantly drew me in and became one of my favorites. I believe Toy Story was the first one that Pixar made in conjunction with Disney. Brilliant animation!

"I sneaked a peak before going off to pay last respects to my aunt ... thank you so much for starting my day on a good note."

You are in my thoughts and heart today, Valerie.

Toy Story is truly one of the most brilliantly animated films. And it's funny because no matter how many times I watch it, I will always see something that missed the time before.

" I remember having a Mr Potato Head when I was a child and I used to LOVE watching the Jetsons on TV too!"

    The BEST!!!!!

  9. Hey there Bijoux~

I can't believe I've never seen Shrek, but have heard from many people that they LOVED it. I really need to buy a previously viewed copy at F.Y.E. and watch it because they're prices on used copies are awesome.

" And funny, but I didn't remember the kiss ass scene! That is hilarious."

Isn't that scene HILARIOUS??? And I don't know if you noticed, but if look at the little computer that's next to Mr. Potato Head in that scene, the words HA HA HA HA HA appear on its screen after he does the kiss ass gesture. Brilliantly clever!

" I just remember them trying to pull that dog around the house, but it's back end would just turn and twist and it never worked."

Yes, the Slinky Dog!!!!! I had a slinky when I was a kid and that darn thing would often get twisted up.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a terrific week!

"I had a Mr. Potato Head when I was a kid. Such a cool toy."

One time I used an APPLE instead of a potato because my mother didn't have any potatoes in the kitchen at the time. So I called him Mr. Apple Head - HA!

" When I went to Puerto Rico with someone from Idaho, my ex laughed and said, "Way to o, Idaho!" like Hamm, the piggy bank."

    HILARIOUS!!!!

"There is just so much greatness written into that movie. "Well, good riddance, ya loonie!"

  12. I loved The Jetsons as a kid and watched it all the time! I agree that Toy Story has just enough adult humor references that it's always enjoyable to watch....and having the excuse to watch it with a kid just makes it that much better, right?! And yes, there are wonderful life lessons to be learned through Buzz...and the others as well.

  13. Hey there Rob~

Yup...I had a feeling you LOVED Toy Story!!!!!

"The films are funny, but, as you point out, quite touching as the characters learn some of life's harder lessons. Each one of the films has at least one scene that brings me to tears."

Yes, that's the brilliance of this film. It's a mixture of both humor and life lessons. The scene when Buzz finds out he's toy, brought tears to my eyes.

"I like Buzz, too, but I'm also a fan of Woody because as we all know, you can never get enough wood!"

Bwhahahahahahahahaha! Rob, that made me HOWL!!!! And it's funny you mentioned Woody and "wood" because that was a running joke with some of my friends at the time.

Wasn't Tom Hanks AWESOME as the voice of Woody? And I loved the little facial expressions he would would give to Buzz like, "You are one crazy-ass dude!"

You are soooooooooo right, girl! Sometimes if I'm feeling out of sorts with a cold or flu, I will watch the movie and it instantly makes me feel GOOD.

"This is a movie that you really need to watch several times to catch all the little nuances that you missed the first time around."

Absolutely! The movie moves so fast, that you really can't catch everything each time you watch it because there are so many subtle things going on that it bypasses you.

I have to agree, I saw two and didn't care for it as much, so I never watch any of the others.

  16. Hi Lisa!

"I loved The Jetsons as a kid and watched it all the time!"

Meeeeeeeeee too! And do you know whats really ironic about that cartoon? So much of the 'modern technology' that was shown (such as microwave ovens, moving sidewalks, electric toothbrushes, and telephones where you could see the person you were talking to) actually came into being in real life.

" I agree that Toy Story has just enough adult humor references that it's always enjoyable to watch....and having the excuse to watch it with a kid just makes it that much better, right?! "

Right! I remember walking out of the movie and saying to my friend that it was a perfect blend of both adult and child humor.

  17. Ron, the part about you rearranging Mr. Potato Head's features into resembling a Salvador Dali painting made me crack up. You are so funny, man!

I have to agree that Toy Story was pure genius. And back then, they just started using computer-animation so it was even more impressive for me. The army men were just the coolest.

Thanks for sharing the video clips because it's been some time since I've watch this movie. Mr. Potato Head was one of my favorites as well.

  19. You brought back memories of playing Mr Potato Head as a child. Or was I playing with one of my niece's sets as an adult? Who knows, but I loved it too ;)

We've never been into cartoons either, but we did watch and enjoy The Polar Express at Christmas. Happy Feet is another we loved. Maybe we do like cartoon movies then ;)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ooh, I love toys that go BUZZ!! Oops, wait a minute, you were talking about something else... ahem... right... Toy Story. Loved it!! Since my kids were young when it came out we definitely saw it, many times! It still plays on the cable stations and I'll watch for a little while if I see one of them while channel surfing.

Fav toys from the movie? Hmm... not really sure. Maybe I'd go with Rex and Bo Peep (Annie Potts is cool).

I used to watch The Jetsons! They still play it on the Cartoon Network. And I still like the Flintstones too.

    Fun post to start the week! Have a good one, neighbor! {hug}

"but we did watch and enjoy The Polar Express at Christmas. Happy Feet is another we loved."

I've seen The Polar Express, but not Happy Feet, which I should because I LOVE penguins! And didn't you love Tom Hanks voice in The Polar Express? He's got such an awesome voice for doing voice overs and cartoon characters.

" It still plays on the cable stations and I'll watch for a little while if I see one of them while channel surfing."

Toy Story will go down as a "classic" many, many years from now, when people look back and say...."Amazing piece of animation!" Just like they do with the old movies and where technology was then.

"Fav toys from the movie? Hmm... not really sure. Maybe I'd go with Rex and Bo Peep (Annie Potts is cool)."

Yes! Yes! Loved the Annie Potts as Bo Peep!!!!!!

LOL Seriously...Buzz and Mr. Potato Head--totally loveable. And tearful material when Buzz discovered he was a toy.....poor thing....
Of course we have the Potato Head stuff here--I have the GHOSTIE guy who turns into a vampire or a Frankenstein of your choice depending on where you put the body parts. LOL AND the vampire teeth glow in the DARK! (eatcher heart out.....LOL)
You KNOW I adore the Jetsons....I was upset when your George avatar went by the wayside--but you kept him, so it's all good and you're forgiven. :-/ Innit funny how some of those 'things' that were an 'idea' have become reality? I still want a Rosie of my own! But I have he-who-does-everything, so it's a bit like having Rosie, I guess.........sorta kinda?

Man. NOW I wanna play with toys.

Yes, I know how MUCH you adore The Jetsons :) And yes, I will ALWAYS have my avatar as George, from now on. One of my friends on Facbook told me I should ax him and use a real photo. I told him...."No, because I AM George Jetson!" HA!

  29. You know, I had forgotten how great this movie was until I read this post, Ron! Watching these two clips reminded me of how detailed the animators were in capturing all the reactions each character made. Like in the last clip, where Mr. Potato Head and his two friends moved their heads in circles in unison, watching Buzz fly around the room. Hysterical!

  35. I loved Mr. Potato Head and Toy Story! I remember having one as a kid. I'm not sure if he would appeal to kids these days. Those were the days when you had to use your imagination and create imaginary friends not on a computer. Ah, those were the good old days.

I guess I had a special place in my heart for Woody. Perhaps because he was a cowboy, perhaps because as a child most of us have a "favorite" toy. I also loved Slinky the dog.

You know, I thought the same thing. In fact, I think that a lot when comes to the toys we played with as kids. Quite often we had to use our 'imaginations' and create something from nothing - like a sock puppet. Can you imagine a kid playing "Jacks" nowadays? 41. Hey Ron, You just have to love a good production like Toy Story, I agree 100% that most of the humor is directed right at the adults and over the kids heads, that is a sign when you can tell that you have passed from childhood to adulthood, when you laugh at a cartoon you always loved but for entirely different reasons.

Slinky the dog would be a favorite of mine, along with Astro from the Jetsons.

  45. Some animated movies are far better than normal movies. I do watch a lot of animated films and besides Toy Story, some of my favorites are Up, Monsters Inc, Battle For Terra, Wall-E, Dragon Hunters and many more. I never have stopped watching cartoons since childhood :)

Some of these films are made so well that they could make you laugh out loud or feel so sad. Some of the characters are very well created and seem alive. I agree with you about Light Buzzyear, he has a lot of confidence built in him.

  46. Oh, I'm crossing my fingers on the snow deal and hoping the trip is an enjoyable one for you. You get to go to NYC! (I'm sure you took the camera and an additional memory card! LOL) Safe journey. I'll hope the snow flies after you're safely returned. Although.....snow AND NYC could make for some awesome photos.. :-/

  47. Hey there Ronnie,

Hoping that you had a busy & happy day in NYC. Oh boy; I would have loved to hop on over to grab a cuppa with ya!

I have seen Toy story and it is really really FUN! Guess who started watching that on TV? D! He gets really goofy with some films(included so called "kids" films. I need to get warmed up( hehe).
I think that I did have a Mr Potato head and I gave one to a friend's daughter(brought it from the US) awhile before the critters were even imported!
    Good clean fun :))
I have been a bit out of commenting this week on the blogs. Catch you soon!! xox

Oh, doesn't everyone love Buzz Lightyear? Funnily enough, I have a friend in the US who always calls me Buzz!

Mr Potato Head was very funny - and you're right; there was a lot of humour in the movie directed at adults, and quite right too!

Now I feel like digging it out and watching it again!

  50. Hiya Mel~

The snow deal held off to and from NYC today, thank god! The only thing we got was strong winds and some rain. The weather was actually better in NYC than it was here.

It's been a loooooooooooong day, so I can't wait to take a shower and jump into bed. I'm pooped.

Thanks a BUNCH for stopping by and checking up on me, dear lady!

    (((((((( You ))))))))

    X ya!

Thank you for recommending those animated films because I haven't seen them but will look for them in my video store.

'Some of these films are made so well that they could make you laugh out loud or feel so sad. Some of the characters are very well created and seem alive."

I sooooooooooo agree! Some of the characters are very well created that they DO seem alive. Especially with computer-animation....it makes them look so REAL!

Always great seeing you, Zunnur! Thank you for stopping by!

    Have a super week!

  54. Bonjour Barb!

Yes, I just got back from NYC about a half hour ago and had a blast. It was a fast and furious trip though, because I got there; had some lunch; went to work; and then jumped back on the bus to Philly. I'm pooped. But we had an excellent meeting!

" Guess who started watching that on TV? D! He gets really goofy with some films(included so called "kids" films. I need to get warmed up( hehe)."

Please tell D that I LOVE his taste in films :)

"I think that I did have a Mr Potato head and I gave one to a friend's daughter(brought it from the US) awhile before the critters were even imported!"

  57. Did your friend work in the animation department?

    ReplyDelete
  58. No he didn't. He had several different jobs at Disney, one being the host to the movie stars who came to Disney for special presentations. It was a faaaaaaaabulous job because he met so many celebrities!
