As most of my longtime readers know, one of my many careers was as a professional makeup artist.

My background in makeup comes from the theater, but I later went on and took what I had learned about stage makeup and applied it to my career as a makeup artist for photo shoots, weddings, and several retail makeup lines, such as: Nars, Chanel, Bobby Brown and MAC.

Makeup application is the same whether using it for stage or everyday life, it’s just a matter of knowing when to bump it up or tone it down; understanding how to use it. But the basic principles of makeup are the same.

My approach to makeup was to always share with my clients that it should be used to enhance a women’s natural beauty. Or, to simply have fun with it.

I see nothing wrong with a woman wearing makeup if she chooses to do so.

I find the art of makeup fascinating. Because it's like painting on a canvas of flesh.

One of my makeup muses was Kevyn Aucoin (who was also a photographer). And not only did I admire his amazing talent as a makeup artist, but also his attitude about makeup, women, and life in general.

Kevyn possessed a gift that went beyond his occupation as a makeup artist - he was a spiritual teacher as well. He had a gentle and sweet, yet very powerful energy that drew people to him.

For all his acclaim and success, Kevyn was a humble gentleman; never forgetting where his priorities of true importance lie.

His soul.

Here are some quotes from Kevyn:

“It's our hearts and brains that we should exercise more often. You can put on all the makeup you want but it won't make your soul pretty.”

“Glamour is not self-conscious; it's not trying really hard. It's just expressing your own truth. I think that's what the essence of glamour really is - expressing your uniqueness"

"Perfection is boring. If a face doesn't have mistakes, it's nothing."

“'I'd rather have huge success and huge failures than travel in the middle of the road.”

Kevyn was a makeup artist for countless celebrities, fashion magazines and runway shows, then later when on to create his own high quality line of cosmetics.

Sadly, on May 7, 2002, Kevyn passed away from complications due to prescription drugs he was taking for pain, associated with a tumor on his pituitary gland. He was only 40 years old.

Kevyn left behind a beautiful legacy that went beyond cosmetics.

He left behind a piece of his soul that will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

I would like to conclude this post with photos from two of his books: Making Faces and Face Forward.

Here are some phenomenal transformations of Kevyn’s masterful art.

Each one of these is a beautiful painting...

Lisa Marie Presley as Marilyn Monroe

Isabella Rossellini as Barbra Streisand

Christina Ricci as French singer, Edith Piaf

Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis

Gena Rowlands as Ava Gardner

Demi Moore as silent film star Clara Bow

Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins as Josephine Baker

*Male to female makeup transformation

  2. Hellooooooooo Lady Nitebyrd!

Hey, you're my first comment because I JUST this second finished publishing this post!

    Yes, wasn't Kevyn BRILLIANT?????

    He was a TRUE artist.

Honestly, it was so hard deciding on WHICH photographs to use because they were ALL faaaaaaaaaabulous!

Yes, if you have time this week, PLEASE watch the video because just hearing him talk will touch and inspire you.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Sis!

    Happy Memorial Day!

    X ya!

  3. OMG those transformations are absolutely A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.! How sad that he passed away at such a young age. :(

For some reason I can't comment on your blog as myself which is why this says guest post. Pearl

  5. Those transformations are amazing, Ron, especially the last one. How sad that such a talented man died so young. I had a hard time with the lookalikes ... they were so perfect I couldn't decide which was which. Going to watch the video now. Thank you so much for sharing this post.

Okay, I watched the video and I am so glad I did before signing off from here. That man was an inspiration. God should have let him live longer so that others could benefit from his existence.

    Have a pleasant Monday.

  6. My goodness, Ron, what an incredibly talented man he was. I'm so glad you wrote this post because it gives me a chance to know more about this wonderful artist.

"I'd rather have huge success and huge failures than travel in the middle of the road."--what a great line! And so many creative people look at their art in the same way.

It's such a shame that Kevyn died so young. Thanks for posting, buddy! Take care and have a great holiday!

  7. Hey there Bijoux~

Aren't they freakin' remarkable???? In some of them, I can't tell the REAL person from the model.

"I'm always surprised by the negativity many people have towards makeup, as though not wearing it makes a person more 'natural and real.

but knowing how to skillfully apply makeup to enhance your features is just smart, in my opinion. I love to see people who REALLY know how to use eye makeup. They are quite stunning."

I totally agree! And if a woman chooses not to wear makeup that's fine too. But WEARING it doesn't make a woman any less real. In fact, yesterday I saw a woman in the Walgreens that did such beautiful job on her own makeup, that I actually walked up to her and said so.

Thank you for stopping by, my friend. Have a wonderful week and Memorial Day!

"Wow. Hard to tell which photo is which! Seriously.....amazing transformations with make up."

HA! I felt the same way! Especially the ones of Barbra Streisand and Ava Gardner. It's totally uncanny how MUCH they LOOK like the celebrities!

"I wear...nothing......all the time. Oh, occasionally some mascara, other than that....zilch. I just can't be bothered."

That's totally cool. But it's nice to know that you have the option of doing so if you wish.

Thanks oodles for stopping by, dear lady. Have a GLORIOUS Monday and Memorial Day!

  10. Ron, I am totally amazed at these transformations. Oh my god, you honestly can't tell the difference between the two! What an unbelievably talented man he was. And so sweet. I watched the video clip and was very moved by his words. And I loved his last sentence about women ruling the world. He's right!

I love wearing makeup. And I think if a woman feels comfortable and knows how to apply it, why not? Like you said, it can be used to bring out a woman's natural beauty or just have fun with it. I love being a woman and having the option of wearing makeup.

Great post, Ron. Have a wonderful week. And Happy Memorial Day!

  11. Hola Denise~

    Aren't the transformations AMAZING?!?!?

"Oh my god, you honestly can't tell the difference between the two!"

Right? The one's of Streisand and Gardner BLOW ME AWAY! Also, the male to female is so awesome because he DOES look like Linda!!!

So glad you enjoyed the interview video clip. It's so great to actually hear him speak, isn't it?

"And I think if a woman feels comfortable and knows how to apply it, why not? Like you said, it can be used to bring out a woman's natural beauty or just have fun with it. I love being a woman and having the option of wearing makeup."

Yup, my sentiments exactly. If you know how to use makeup properly, it can be a wonderful tool of discovery.

Thanks for stopping by this morning, girl. Have a super week and Memorial Day!

  12. What a fascinating and enjoyable post, Ron! You will often post things that I have no awareness of (like makeup), but end up walking away educated. Not only are these transformations phenomenal, but his attitude and outlook on life is really inspiring. No matter what we do in life, Kevyn's principles can be applied to all of us. What I liked about the video was his perception of 'deciding to be who you are, not what you want to be.'

The photo of Barbra Streisand is uncanny. WOW!

    Thank you for sharing, Ron.

  13. Hiya Matt!

Thank you. Glad to hear you enjoyed this post. I got so much pleasure and enjoyment putting this post together. I took his photographs and added the smaller thumbnail photos within them. It was a challenge trying to find photos that matched HIS photos.

" No matter what we do in life, Kevyn's principles can be applied to all of us. What I liked about the video was his perception of 'deciding to be who you are, not what you want to be.'"

Exactly! Everything he shared is Universal and can be applied to ALL our lives.

Isn't the one of Streisand freakin' UNCANNY???

Thanks for stopping by, Matt. Have a great week and Memorial Day!

  14. Wow, talk about talented! It's almost impossible to tell which is which in those Before and After photos!

I love his quote about putting all the makeup you want on but it won't make your soul pretty -- very profound.

Perhaps it's easier putting makeup on somebody else than it is putting it on yourself??

  15. what's up ron. wow, never heard of kevyn, but my mouth was open looking at the comparison shots. he was truly gifted.

it's really sad he died so young, and from complications from pain killers. that scares me more than you know. that last one is amazing!

i don't wear make-up though some people would love it if i did, i just don't want to make the time in the morning to "paint my face."

thanks for sharing. have a great evening, friend!

  16. Hey there Debbie!

"It's almost impossible to tell which is which in those Before and After photos!"

Right? The ones of Barbra and Ava are so amazing because they are so close to what they look like, it's almost scary.

Don't you just love his attitude and outlook on life and makeup? Profound indeed!

"Perhaps it's easier putting makeup on somebody else than it is putting it on yourself??"

I think it depends on the person. Some women are very savvy at applying makeup on themselves. I used to give makeup lessons to women by applying just half the face, and then had them apply makeup to the other half, so that they could learn. It seemed to work.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day! Enjoy your week!

  17. Hey there V Girl!

"wow, never heard of kevyn, but my mouth was open looking at the comparison shots. he was truly gifted."

Wasn't he SO talented? And he was also an amazing photographer as well. In fact, it took several of these photos himself. Don't you just LOVE lighting in these photographs? It adds to the whole FEEL of the image.

Yup, isn't the last one AMAZING? He really DOES look like Linda!

"it's really sad he died so young, and from complications from pain killers. that scares me more than you know."

It was so sad, he was taking so many painkillers because his whole body was in so pain because of the tumor, that THEY are what really caused his death.

"i don't wear make-up though some people would love it if i did, i just don't want to make the time in the morning to "paint my face."

That's totally your call. As I shared in some of my comments, not all women choose to wear makeup. Besides, I honestly don't think you need to wear makeup because your face is GREAT the way it is!!!!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, girl. Hope you had a nice, relaxing Memorial Day! I was outside all day, enjoying the weather because tomorrow it's supposed to rain.

  18. 'I don't want to be tolerated, I want to be celebrated.' What a fabulous quote. I love it. You are right, I could tell from watching the video, that he certainly did have a gentle but powerful energy. A wonderful self-confidence that probably allowed him to help many people, women especially, find their own power.
Those photos are amazing! I'm sure I've seen his work before, a few of the transformations looked familiar. I probably just didn't know his name.
Well, I've joked a lot that the way I do my makeup is to throw it up and run under it. A girlfriend used to say that many years ago, but it seems to fit me more than her I think. LOL Sometimes I would like to spend a little more time than I do applying makeup, have even watched a few tutorials online about doing more dramatic eyes, etc. But then I go right back to the 3 minute job I usually do and that's that. Atleast I care enough about not scaring young children and the elderly to put some on, ya know! Haha!

Nice tribute. He had a real talent, shame he died so young!

  19. Ronnie this is an amazing post! I have to say for one the transformations are absolutely amazing my favorite being the gorgeous Marilyn Munroe. The quote that really struck me was :
"Perfection is boring. If a face doesn't have mistakes, it's nothing."
This is so true in so many aspects of life. If there aren't mistakes or imperfections life would be boring it would be a lot like that movie Pleasantville and I don't think anyone would want that! Thanks for sharing this post!

  20. "My goal in life is to have women take over the world." Okay, sold. He seemed like a happy soul and it also sounds like he had a very understanding mother. Maybe that's why he thinks so much of women?

I'm not much of a make-up person myself, since I'm more the natural sort with hippie leanings. (Although, I am a fan of the new tinted moisturizer/sunblocks - what a great idea!) But, looking at it as an art form, it's just fascinating. He really was incredibly talented. The look-alikes were wild. I'm not sure I'd want to be able to be transformed into Edith Piaf, though - those eyebrows scare the bejeebers out of me!

"My goal in life is to have women take over the world." Okay, sold."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Isn't that faaaaaaaabulous? And honestly? I feel the same way.

And yes, he did seem like a happy soul. And yes, I think that because of his mother and sister, is why he thought so much of women. I think many gay men feel the same way. They adore women because they truly understand women on a very deep level.

"I'm not much of a make-up person myself, since I'm more the natural sort with hippie leanings. (Although, I am a fan of the new tinted moisturizer/sunblocks - what a great idea!)"

Tinted moisturizers are the BOMB! Because you get two things in one - moisture and a bit of color.

Yes, wasn't he a very talented man? These transformations (as an art form) are UNbelievable.

"I'm not sure I'd want to be able to be transformed into Edith Piaf, though - those eyebrows scare the bejeebers out of me!"

Bwhahahahahahaha! Yes, they are kinda scary. But that's how women worn their brows back then. Personally, I like a fuller brow.

  25. Helloooooooooo Pam!

"I had to get that out."

Bwahhahahahahaha! I know, aren't his makeup transformations UNbelievable??? He was a true artist in every sense of the word.

Yes, he passed away sooooo young. But in the time that he had on this earth, he accomplished so much. I think in some intuitive way, he knew he would not live long. He had the tumor on his pituitary since he was a child, but they never discovered it until he got older.

"I've always believed that we shouldn't follow trends because they aren't for everyone. We are different, therefore we should do what is right for us, individually."

A-MEN! I've never been one to follow trends. It's more important to know what looks good on YOU and be an individual.

"That is awesome! I wish more young girls would read those words and believe them. Maybe they should listen to his interview. He's wise...and handsome!! ;)"

Yes, wasn't he handsome? And it's funny, because so many young girls NOW are reading his books and listening to his words, following his attitude about individuality and being true to YOU. So, his legacy lives on!

I wanted to share this post this month, as a tribute to his passing in May 2002.

This is a very profound statement. All the make up in the world can't cover an ugly soul. When caustic comments come out of an otherwise beautiful face, the magic disappears and what's left is a hideous creature. His transformations are nothing short of amazing, and he certainly possessed a rare gift in that industry (next to you, of course!). :-)

It's true! And what I find really interesting about Kevyn is that for as much he was INTO cosmetics, he had a reality check on what they could and could not do.

Are these transformations beyond amazing? And yes, he did possess a rare gift in that industry because he knew where true beauty came from...the soul.

I have just been so busy since returning home from Bourges. I can't belive that I missed 2 of your posts (Mon Dieu!). But, that's OK. Today is finally a calm day.

I never knew Mr Aucoin. His work is art!! The Photography is stunning, and man, that makeup!! These were fabulous works of transformation.

Speaking as an "average woman", looking herself in the mirror some mornings and say "how do I change the look?", I would love just to have an ounce of Mr Aucoin's knowledge.

What an awful loss to lose this brilliant man so young.

"I am so glad I did before signing off from here. That man was an inspiration. God should have let him live longer so that others could benefit from his existence."

Yay! Soooooo glad to hear that you watched the video because just hearing him talk, you get a true sense about the man and his beautiful spirit. He accomplished so much in his 40 years. And it's even more sad, because his mother passed away about 7 months after.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Happy Monday to you and have a lovely week!

  49. Good morning Pearl!

Aren't they AMAZING????? I first discovered Kevyn's work back in the early 90's. He also made brief guest appearances on various TV shows, like "Sex In The City."

" How sad that he passed away at such a young age. :("

I know, 40, can you believe it? And his month passed away about 7 months after.

Yes, Disqus just went through an update on their interface, so it's been acting a little weird lately. Sorry about that.

Thanks so much for stopping by, m'dear! Have a glorious Monday and week!

  50. WOW! What a wise and talented man! Thank you so much for including the video. I've always been amazed to see the transformations of actors/actresses into other people for movies. He did an incredible job with each of these. What a joy this post was for me this morning!

  51. Remarkable transformations!!! And all so beautiful.

I'm always surprised by the negativity many people have towards makeup, as though not wearing it makes a person more 'natural and real.' Sure, no one wants to look like a clown, but knowing how to skillfully apply makeup to enhance your features is just smart, in my opinion. I love to see people who REALLY know how to use eye makeup. They are quite stunning.
