I've always had such an interest in photography and pictures.

To me there is something so fascinating about a moment captured in time - especially vintage photos.

A photograph is not only visual, but also contains an energy that you can feel.

And it’s odd, for as much as I love photography, I have never felt the desire to take a formal class. I will sometimes read books on the subject, however, I learn best by just doing and figuring it out on my own. It’s the same with how I learned to customize the HTML and CSS code within my blog - trial and error.

I also enjoy learning by listening to and following my intuition.

I’ve only had four cameras in my life. I will get a camera, learn how to use it, then upgrade to another camera; learning more.

Here was my very first. Could you just DIE?

A Kodak Polaroid Swinger

My mother bought me this same camera for Christmas when I was about 13-years old. She also bought me four Polaroid film cartridges, all of which I used to take pictures of my younger brother, Tom. However, my mother eventually got so tired seeing pictures only of him, she finally said, “Ronnie..can you PLEASE take some pictures other than your brother???”

Back in the ‘90’s, I purchased this camera (which I still have).

An Olympus Infinity Zoom 210

This is actually a great film camera that takes fantastic photos.

When digital cameras first came out, I was resistant to getting one because the whole idea of taking photographs without film; viewing them on a computer monitor seemed so cold. I preferred actually touching and holding a photograph. And I still do.

Although, 2 ½ years ago, I gave in and bought my first digital camera.

A Nikon CoolPix L22

This is pretty much a point and shoot, but man, does it take some awesome photos. I learned a lot from this little camera but felt myself craving something more advanced, which would allow me to control the camera.

So this month I did some research (with the help of my friend Val), and finally decided on this one, which I just got last Friday.

*doing the happy dance*

A Canon Power Shot SX 160 IS

I’ve only had a few days to play around with it, but I am VERY happy with my choice! You can’t believe the powerful optical ZOOM this camera has. And the photographs are sharp and crystal clear. It also has a manual setting so that I will learn more about the technicality of photography.

Lately, my creative muse is beckoning me towards expressing what I see through my eyes and photography. So I may be adding a mid-week post in which I simply share a single photograph I’ve taken.

I have no idea where all this is leading me, but I’m just going to flow with it and enjoy the creative ride.

Which by the way, today I'm heading out on another day trip with Val. I will also be meeting up with another blogging friend, Rob, who I can’t wait to finally talk with in person!

I won’t be getting back to Philly until late, so I'll be responding to comments and visiting your fabulous blogs either tonight or tomorrow. Thank you for your patience and understanding everyone...x

Have a SUPER Monday and week!

Rerun: Here is a crazy video I made 3 years ago. Many of you have already seen it, but some not. Enjoy...

  1. Ron! Congratulations on hour camera! I ADORE my Canon! It is an older model, but it takes great pictures!! The screen is huge! I would like to upgrade...but for now I actually use my iphone most of the time! Thanks so much for stopping by with your good wishes. Still waiting on final results. And YES...I could just DIE...I think I had that very same first camera! Xo

  2. Look out, Frank Sinatra, you've got some serious competition!

    Love those old cameras, man.

I think my first camera was an Argus and I've always specialized in the PHD--"Press Here, Dummy" type of cameras. I was late in getting a digital camera, too, but I finally cracked down and CooPix a few years ago.

Looking forward to seeing you today, buddy, but please don't anger any gypsy ladies! There are laws against unleashed dogs!!

  3. So excited that you got a new camera! I am dying for a camera with a real zoom but really I dont use my digital one enough the justify the cost. I always say I want photographs so I can remember everything but I am so bad at keeping up with it. I hope you have fun playing around with it and cant wait to see what you come up with!

  4. Hey, you got a new camera. It looks great. Hmm a lot less bulky than mine. I'm with you with learning as we go. I'd much rather find things out for myself than ask questions. I probably wouldn't understand the answers anyway....haha. It's more fun out way, isn't it? Can't wait to see the pictures from yet another day in New York.

Now about the video. It was before my time so I hadn't seen it before... already I've watched it twice because it was so HILARIOUS. Loved, loved, loved it. You are clever.

You made my day, Ron, Enjoy yours xx

  5. Ron, you must have posted this video before I started reading your blog. It's hilarious! I watched it two times and then showed it to one of the girls I work with and she and I sat here laughing until we were crying. Oh my god, you are so creative and funny!

Congratulations on our new camera, it looks like a great one. I really enjoy your photographs, so I look forward to seeing the ones you take with this new Canon.

Have a wonderful time on your day trip today with your friend Val and Rob. Can't wait to read and see all about it.

  6. How fun to meet up with Val and Rob! Hope you three have a great time. Your first camera is pretty impressive. My first one was really cheap......a pocket instamatic with 110 cartridges. It worked though!

  7. Congratulations on your new camera, Ron! The one you recommended to me in the picture, I'm really enjoying. It does take awesome photos, you're right. And it's easy to use.

And dude, that video was hysterical! How did you do that with the animated street and the dog?

Enjoy your day trip today, Ron. Looking forward to your photographs and stories!

  8. Great camera choice Ron! I am a huge Canon fan. ALL of my cameras have been Canon, except for my very first digital and I hated that one.

That video is hilarious! Love it :)

  9. I don't even wanna THINK about purchasing a new camera. I'm really, really comfy with this one--and I can't tell ya what it is without retrieving it and abandoning the cuppa coffee. *laughing* FAT chance of that! This will mark the second--the first had the floppy disc you could insert and remove. *laughing* Twice replaced--ocean water does nothing for a digital camera. What can I say--certainly not 'live and learn'. :-/ But yippee! Oh, and the 'stand by' camera that sits in the bag is the same as the one you're graduating from--which I'm far from mastering cuz I'm spoiled by the one I've had for years. That's how scared I am of being without the camera...LOL.....I have a second one I don't use! I was reminded of that one existing cuz it's smaller than the one I tote here and there...but I just don't use it. *sigh* Maybe I'll work on that while I'm 'down for the count' again? Probably not. I'm a 'use it til it dies' kinda gal.
Enjoy your time out and about. Hoping you take that new camera so I can see it in action!

  10. A new camera!! How wonderful! Oh, I know you're going to love it. We feel the same way about photos... the old ones, especially. They are so cool. Makes me sad that they get so faded. I've always loved taking pictures. One of my first cameras was a Polaroid instant camera. How cool was it that you press a button and the pic just came right out?! Seemed like forever to wait for the shot to develop and it was only a few short minutes. lol

I can't remember the assorted cameras I've had, but am currently using 2 Canons. The pocket variety is a Canon PowerShot SD1300 IS and the bigger one is a Canon PowerShot S5 IS. I like them both. For as much as I love taking photographs I've never really learned about lighting and what setting they should be on for different shots though. I just play around and sometimes get a decent capture, other times not. That's the beauty of the digitals and the delete button!

I know you will have an awesome time with Val and Rob.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with your new camera. Enjoy it!

  11. Hi Ronnie,
You are on a roll with your summer trips with Val to NYC! Yay; another blogger is joining you guys. Hi Val & Rob!
Congrats to you, dear! You are the proud owner of a new Canon! Just wait and see; you will be getting more creatively challenged.Remeber, it comes slowly; I still make errors!
What a cool evolution for your cameras. I had a Kodak Poloroid style camera as my high school graduation gift. It was a fun choice but also an unfortunate one. Kodak got dragged into Court on a class action suit and I signed on. If I remember well, I got coupons off on developing & cameras.
Great news that you will start with a weekly photo. Go man,, go!!
    Big hugs,
    xoxo

  13. you are too freaking funny. ron, gotta love you. enjoyed the video. glad that curse didn't work too. whew. oh wait....

i remember the olympus stylus film camera i had. it was so awesome and the photos were sharp and punchy. i too didn't want to go digital, but went in kicking and screaming.

great choice of camera and good job getting one with manual settings. that's where the additional creativity comes in. can't wait to see the photos you capture.

    ReplyDelete
  14. me too, babs. i love canon because that's when i started learning with my ae1. i am however, an olympus fangirl too. i will NEVER give up my olys completely. i am looking at a mark II later this year.

  15. How funny! I started with an AE1 too. I loved that camera and was sorry I ever sold it to go digital. Big mistake.

  16. I've always loved taking pictures, too! Those polaroid cameras were fun back in the day!

  17. My first digital camera was a Nikon Coolpix. I remember it well; it had something like 1.6 megapixels but seemed totally cool and futuristic at the time. My latest camera has 14 megapixels and is probably better in every way, shape, and form - yet I still sometimes miss that first camera.

Enjoy your trip with Val! Looking forward to seeing the photographical evidence of your misadventures.

  18. Hey, buddy, it was GREAT meeting you and Val outside my office today! At last we meet! Let's doing it again soon, either in your backyard or mine!. Take care!

  19. Love your new Canon and can't wait to see how you like it (and the photos you share with it!)

I, too, have run through my share of cameras (especially the digital ones). It seems like somebody is always coming out with something "new and improved" in the technology field.

You are soooo lucky, getting out on another day trip so soon after the last one! And here I sit, up to my ears in work, with a plate so full I don't know when I'm going to get a break! Sigh. And I need a vacation so badly. Sigh, again.

Enjoy your day hanging with blog friends!

  20. Fabulous! I'm so glad you got a new camera. You have such a talent for taking pictures. You deserve a kick ass piece of equipment. Can't wait to see all the photos you take with it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Loved the trip down memory lane!

Yeah, that Canon Power Shot SX 160 IS is one snazzy camera. I was actually looking at that model for the wife. Have yet to decide, but will keep your review of it in mind!

For my travel camera I used a Canon PowerShot SD440 IS, but after bouncing around in my pocket for years, surviving multiple trips up Mt. Whitney, and a long stint in my car it's beginning to look and act its age. I'm thinking that another small camera is in my near future!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Helloooooo Jeanne!

Thank you! This is the first Canon I've ever owned and I REALLY like! It's a very sturdy-feeling camera and has a hearty amount of settings, which I can't wait to play around with. And yes, the screen on this one is HUGE as well. It's bigger than the one I had on my Nikon.

" I would like to upgrade...but for now I actually use my iphone most of the time!"

Hey, the photos I see that people take with their iphones are AWESOME! My brother just got one and the quality of both his photos AND videos look so professional!

You had a Kodak Swinger too? Those were the rage back then!

Thanks for stopping by, dear lady. Sending ya "good vibes" about your test results...

  24. Hey there Valerie!

OMG...I'm so excited about this new camera!!!

" Hmm a lot less bulky than mine."

I wanted a camera with more manual features, but still wanted one that was somewhat small, so that I could carry easily. This one is bigger (thicker) than my previous one, but it's still easy carry.

"I'm with you with learning as we go. I'd much rather find things out for myself than ask questions. I probably wouldn't understand the answers anyway....haha. It's more fun out way, isn't it? "

You said it, dear lady! I enjoy learning through trial and error. In fact, I'm one of those people who never reads the directions in the box when putting something together - I just put it together on my own - HA!

OMG...you never saw that video? I'm glad to hear that because I thought that probably most people did. So glad you enjoyed it. I made it on the software in my laptop computer.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a GLORIOIUS week!

Thank you. I am so excited I got a new camera too! I've been wanting one for the longest time, so when it arrived in the mail last Friday, I was DANCING around my apartment!

" I am dying for a camera with a real zoom but really I dont use my digital one enough the justify the cost."

The ZOOM on my previous camera was not very strong or clear. So if I wanted a close up I had to CROP the photo close. The ZOOM on this new camera is AWESOME!

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a super week! I'll be stopping by your blog tomorrow!

Me too! But now that I'm shooting digitally, it's great because if you don't like a photo, you can erase it and start over. And think of the money we now save, NOT using film!

I am so looking forward to using this new camera. And thanks so much for helping me make my choice!

And the cool about this trip was that Val and I also got to meet ROB!!!! He was so nice and took us all around where he works in lower Manhattan today. SUPER guy!

And thank you, yes, I am really enjoying having this new camera. There is still so much for me to learn, but as you shared, it comes slowly.

We had an AMAZING time in NYC today. Walked our feet off for 7 1/2 hours, but we saw SO MUCH. I will be posting photos either this week or next.

  38. Hellooooooo Debbie!

Thank you. Yes, I'm LOVIN' this new Canon! There are still so many things I need to learn, but I'm looking forward to that. It's all about the 'journey' right?

"It seems like somebody is always coming out with something "new and improved" in the technology field."

Exactly! It's just like getting a new computer - the next year something BETTER comes out with more technology. I am so far behind in technology. I don't even have a CELL PHONE - HA!

I have off work for the whole month of July, which is why I'm REALLY taking advantage of this time and doing a lot of day trips. Because once I go back to work, it's going be insane, getting ready for the Fall season and CHRISTMAS.

  39. Hey Herman!

HA! Aren't the old cameras a TRIP???

"Yeah, that Canon Power Shot SX 160 IS is one snazzy camera. I was actually looking at that model for the wife."

So far, I'm lovin' this camera! And the thing I really like about it is that you can just set it to 'auto mode' and the pictures come out GREAT. Or, you can set to 'manual' mode and do your own thing. And it also has a lot of cool effects you make with your photos WHILE taking the photo, instead of doing it in post editing.

"For my travel camera I used a Canon PowerShot SD440 IS."

I'm going to have to Google that one because I don't know it. But if it's a Canon, I'm sure it's a great camera!

The thing I really like about these Canon Power Shot models are that they are small. I like being able to carry a camera in my hand, or place it in my pocket for easy transporting and traveling. However, one of these days I have a feeling that I will be upgrading to a larger model; carrying around my neck with a strap.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy! Hope you had great Monday and week ahead of you!

  40. Hey there Mary!!!

OMG...I'm so damn excited about this new camera, I could POOP!

And today, I had more time trying it out in NYC. It's just a super little camera!!!!

"e feel the same way about photos... the old ones, especially. They are so cool. Makes me sad that they get so faded."

You're absolutely right, they DO get faded. In fact, all the old photos I have of me as a kid are very faded. That's one of the things that's GOOD about digital - the life span is longer.

"One of my first cameras was a Polaroid instant camera. How cool was it that you press a button and the pic just came right out?!"

Yes, that's what I LOVED about Polaroids - they were INSTANT!

"The pocket variety is a Canon PowerShot SD1300 IS and the bigger one is a Canon PowerShot S5 IS."

Thank you so much for mentioning the models you have because eventually I know I will want to upgrade to one of the bigger models.

"For as much as I love taking photographs I've never really learned about lighting and what setting they should be on for different shots though."

Same here, so that's why I'm looking forward to learning more about lighting and such, because I can adjust those things with this new Canon camera. Like you, I just play around and try different things. And yes, that's the beauty of digital, NO worry about getting a bad shot. Just DELETE. There's no film to waste.

We had a super time in NYC today. I will be posting photos either this week or next.

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor! Have a maaaaavelous week! Isn't the weather beautiful?

  41. Congratulations on your new camera, Ron! And I am so happy to hear that you upgraded to something more advanced because you have such a talented eye for photography, no lie! And I can just imagine how much more you're going to learn from having this new Canon. You're going to be shooting like a pro!

I remember seeing one of those Poloroid cameras at my uncle's house a few years ago and thinking how far photography technique has evolved throughout the years. Now with digital, people don't even need to use film anymore.

And I have to tell you how much I enjoyed watching that video clip, curse of the gypsy woman. How the hell do you ever think of stuff like this? The dog at the end made me laugh my ass off! You are such a trip, Ron! And you know I'll have to come back later in the week to watch it again. And again.

  42. Hey ho Robert!

Thank you, buddy. And thank you for your kind and supportive words. I'm hoping this camera teaching me more about the 'behind the scenes' aspect of photography, rather than just allowing the camera to do all the work. I love photography, so it's time I learn more.

"Now with digital, people don't even need to use film anymore."

You're right. Hardly anyone using film anymore. It's like a lost art. But like with anything, I bet it comes back in a few years.

Glad you enjoyed the video. I made that clip with the software on my laptop computer about 3 years ago. One day, I just turned on the camcorder and starting talking and making up a story. I had no idea where it was going to go, until I discovered that I could actually change myself into a dog, using one of the effects.

I never had a Polaroid! I started off with a really cheap, tacky, GIGO camera, but it sparked my desire for more. Then when I met OH, he impressed me no end by lending me his Pentax without having known me more than a day or two and letting me use up all his B&W film! He even developed the pictures for me and I LOVED the results!!!

I too resisted digital for a while, but then the first digital cameras weren't very good, were they? I can't get rid of my old film cameras (I even have my father's old bellows camera!) but I'm now sold on digital. We have a Canon DSLR (what you call the Rebel) but I looooove my Panasonics. I have a DMC-TZ30 and a Lumix bridge camera.

  52. Hey there Jay!

".... but I'm now sold on digital."

Me too! Isn't it great to be able to take a photo, and then if you don't like it, you can just erase it?

    AWE-SOME!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Jay! Hope you're having a SUPER week!

  53. It will come as no surprise to you, Ron, that I also resist being taught to take photographs. I want to figure it out as I go, and did the same with blogging and HTML.

I had a little Kodak instamatic that I got for CHristmas when I was 8. But I didn't really care anything about cameras much until digital photography. Oh, the freedom of not having to buy film or pay for developing! Now I have two cameras I use - a Sony Cybershot DSC and a Canon Powershot SX 20. Love them both.
