Yes, I’m a trash picker.

Well, not exactly a trash picker as in someone who goes through Philadelphia city trash cans; picking out cigarette butts or half-emptied bottles of beer and wine.

No, I’m more of a trash picker as in someone who, if I spot something in the trash area of my apartment building that’s REALLY incredible, I will most definitely pick it out and give it a new home.

You see, that's my way of being green and recycling.

And let me tell you folks, since I’ve lived in this building, I have found some super items that other tenants have disposed of. I live in a building with a lot of college students who when they vacate after graduation, just toss things.

Things like:

-A Hewlett-Packard printer/scanner. I couldn’t understand WHY someone threw that out because it was like BRAND NEW. I’ve had it for over 4 years and it still works. Btw, I'm a huge HP fan.

-A Eureka vacuum cleaner that looked as though it had just come off the sales floor. And at the time I found it in the trash area, I NEEDED a new one. I've had this vacuum cleaner for 2 years now and it still works great.

-An Emerson microwave oven that looked as though it had NEVER been used. I got that about 2 months ago. And it’s funny because my old microwave died, so I was just getting ready to buy a new one.

I’ve also picked up some really nice lamps and wall art.

Now there are certain things I draw the line on picking trash.

Such as a mattress.

Ewwwwwwww! God only knows how many people slept on it and what they DID.

Or worse...BED BUGS.

Nope, sorry, no previously-owned mattresses for me – or things like bed pillows.

Well, as luck would have it, Tuesday afternoon before I got into the elevator to go to my apartment, I spotted a suit coat on a hanger, which looked as though it had just been dry-cleaned because it still had the clear plastic bag over it.

I picked it up and lifted the plastic to see what it looked like, and OMG…it was faaaabulous!

The coat was of a rich, deep bluish-black color, that had a slight sheen to the material; handsomely tailored from a company called MIVO. And not only did the hanger contain a coat, but also a pair of matching pants. AND…it also had a brand new tailored white shirt!

I quickly looked at the measurement of the coat, but it didn’t have a size tag. However, I could tell that it might be a good fit, just from the shoulder width and overall cut.

So do you know what I did? I recycled it!

And when I got into my apartment, I tried on the coat and guess what? It fit like a glove; almost as if it was custom-made. The pants fit me in the waist but the length was definitely too long. But who cares because I can always have them altered. And the shirt was a slim fit in MY size.

Here, take a peek...

Whoever previously owned it must have been OCD because the coat and shirt were spotlessly clean.

And do you know what’s hysterical? I’ve been looking to buy a new suit coat, but have had the worst time finding my size.

It's ironic, because it seems that whenever I'm searching for something, the object just APPEARS in the trash.

Gee...I wonder if that'll work when I start looking for a boyfriend to have a deep and meaningful relationship with.

Perhaps I'll just wake up one day and there he'll be.

In the TRASH...

...is another man's treasure!

Have a delightfully trashy weekend everyone!
X

  1. Ron, I read your post with amazement but you should have seen my grin at the end. You must have the luck of the angels to find so many workable and usable things. I can't believe someone threw that lovely suit away. Heehee now I'm trying to fix on the scenario... lovers tiff, failed interview, stolen goods. I'd get those trousers shortened pretty quick if I were you. It's a fabulous looking suit though and just right to attract a decent looking guy. Hmm if multi-storeys contain such excellent trash I guess I'd better consider moving.

Weekend is upon us, have a good one x

  2. WOW! I can't believe you found all that! Although they do say college kids do pitch brand new items their parents bought them because they are too damn lazy to move it back home! I'd kill my kids if they did that!

I can't think of anything I've ever picked up in the trash. I do remember my old neighbors picking up four really nice wooden benches from the trash behind a local Ice cream store one time. We were shocked at how nice they were.

Have a super weekend, Trash Man!

  3. Snazzy suit, sir. Why someone would give that a heave is beyond me--but so be it! I'll just be glad for your treasure.

I'm not so fortunate to be near a trash bin where college students are dumping the stuff they didn't use. (oh, the good intentions of parents....LOL) I do, however spot things set out for the trash fella's and wonder if snagging it and saving it from the evils of the landfill would be a good call. Of course, by the time I convince myself that it'd be 'okay' to retrieve the item in broad daylight, with witnesses.....(oy.) the item's been plucked by someone else.....or, it's well on the way to it's new home at the landfill.
One of these days I'm just gonna slam on the brakes and DO it!
Or....I'll go to the door, ask if they mind my salvaging the item and THEN do it!
OR....I'll just keep showing up at garage sales and flea markets cuz I'm a wuss! ROFL

  4. hey ron, i am not made at you for looking in the trash. in my hood on bulk night and in other areas, people drive around with trucks looking for items people discarded and usually there is nothing wrong with them and they're not broken. the previous owner simply got something new and toss the other one. i have put out working items and no sooner than it hit the ground someone was there to get it. makes me happy someone can use it.

now tell me THAT suit in that picture is NOT what you found. heck no, i would grab that myself. it's gorgeous.

i don't think you want your man from the trash, unless his pants are stuffed with money.

  5. Haha this is hilarious! I do not go as far as trash picking but I think if something jumped out at me, like that gorgeous suit you found, I would certainly snag it. I guess the trash in my area just isnt nearly as interesting as yours!

  6. I can't believe what you find in the trash!

To be honest with you, we don't have anywhere for trash here. It all goes to the huge tips for recycling and clothing usually goes to the charity shops. If anyone puts stuff out like that, it's called 'dumping' and is against the law. We are only allowed to fill our black bins with household rubbish, our blue bins with paper and anything else we must dispose of in the proper manor.

We have often put things out, on our front wall, that are in good condition, and someone always takes it. If they didn't, we'd have to take it to the tip and throw it, to be crushed.

We also have a lot of 'Freecycling' web sites, where people give stuff away. I'm telling you, that most of it, I wouldn't give house room to though.

I can't understand why people throw out good as new stuff, but good for you that they do ;)

  7. Sounds like the universe knows what you need and your size. Since the pants were too long I think the universe is telling you that you need to wear stilettos, lol!

  8. WOW that suit is beautiful! Are you sure it had been put out for the trash Ron and not just put there whilst it's owner was taking more shopping to their apartment???? I think you must live in a very 'well-to-do' apartment block if people put things like that in the trash! LOL Anyway well done to you. Piccie of you wearing it now please. x

  9. Ron, once again you made me laugh. You have the most hilarious sense of humor! I just about fell of my desk chair at the end of this post. Too funny.

And I have to say that the suit coat and shirt you found in the trash is so sharp. Nice find! It looks like a very expensive suit too. I love the color and texture.

Yes, I would never trash pick a mattress either. Ewww. But I have found some nice pieces of furniture in the waste area of an apartment building I used to live in several years ago.

Thank you for always starting my morning with a laugh or something to think about.

    Have a wonderful weekend, Ron.

  11. Hey there Bijoux!

    Isn't it a GREAT-LOOKING suit? I couldn't believe someone tossed it!?!?

" Although they do say college kids do pitch brand new items their parents bought them because they are too damn lazy to move it back home! I'd kill my kids if they did that!"

They have even pitched A/C window units, dishes, glasses, books, shelving units, etc. I could probably refurnish my entire apartment at the end of each school year from what I find in the trash.

"I do remember my old neighbors picking up four really nice wooden benches from the trash behind a local Ice cream store one time."

WOW...now those sound GREAT!!!! Good find!

Do you live in a shopping mall?!?

Maybe you should start ordering ahead--yo, I need a sofa!

In Brooklyn all I find is the trash and nothing but the trash...and the occassional dead gangster.

You must post a picture of yourself wearing that suit! And while you're looking around for a boyfriend in the trash bin, please let me know if you find any supermodels!

    Have a trashy weekend, buddy!

"One of these days I'm just gonna slam on the brakes and DO it!"

You GO, Mel!!! I'll tell ya, I have found some of the most incredible treasures that were other people's trash.

As I shared, I have found some of the coolest things in the trash area of this apartment building.

"now tell me THAT suit in that picture is NOT what you found. heck no, i would grab that myself. it's gorgeous."

Yes...isn't it GORGEOUS? And you should see it up close because the texture and color are stunning.

  17. Hiya Babs!

I know, can you BELIEVE that?!?!

" If anyone puts stuff out like that, it's called 'dumping' and is against the law. We are only allowed to fill our black bins with household rubbish, our blue bins with paper and anything else we must dispose of in the proper manor."

Yes, it's pretty much the same here. And the only reason I was able to find these items was because we have an 'area' on the first floor of this building that has a HUGE trash disposal room that's kind of like a 'waiting area' inside the building, just before the trash guys pick it up. So if you're lucky, you can sometimes grab things before the trash men get here and dispose of it.

We also have a recycling area down in the basement for things like glass, cans, plastic and paper.

"I can't understand why people throw out good as new stuff, but good for you that they do ;)"

Me either. I was so LUCKY to find this suit.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, Babs! Have a lovely weekend!

Isn't it BEEEAUTIFUL? I was in SHOCK that someone was throwing it out!?

"Are you sure it had been put out for the trash Ron and not just put there whilst it's owner was taking more shopping to their apartment????"

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Yes, I'm sure because it's an area specifically for waste. Also, there were other items as well.

"I think you must live in a very 'well-to-do' apartment block if people put things like that in the trash!"

It's just that I live in an area where there are a lot of universities and colleges, so the things I find are most likely purchased by the parents of the students whilst in school.

"Piccie of you wearing it now please."

Yes, I may post photo wearing it in another post.

  25. Ron, that is one gorgeous suit! Looks like something you'd seen on a model in GQ. And it looks in mint condition too.

I can't believe all the great items you found in the trash over the years. Doesn't it just kill you the stuff that people throw away, especially how tight money is with the economy?

"You see, that's my way of being green and recycling."

You slay me with your clever logic!

And yo, if you find a guy in the trash that looks like the one in the photo, ask him if he has a twin!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey ho Robert!

Thanks, isn't it GORGEOUS? Yes, it IS in mint condition, which was what impressed me the most. It looked like it had been worn ONCE! The material is so cool because it has a slight sheen to it which makes the suit look bluish-black, depending on the light.

Yes, it blows me away what some people throw out. If I want to get rid of something, I will ask a friend if they want it. In fact, I did that with an old printer I once had.

"And yo, if you find a guy in the trash that looks like the one in the photo, ask him if he has a twin!"

Speaking of HP printers, I love their products too, but the ink cartridges here in Canada are often more than buying a whole new printer, that comes with starter ink cartridges, That may explain why that printer was in the trash. It should have at least been recycled though, if they didn't want it.
Your suit coat looks great, what a find. You're an expert at this, I can tell.

Don't you just LOVE anything HP? I have only had HP computers and printers, and they have lasted me FOREVER. Both my desktop and laptop are HP's and they work like a charm. Never had any problems with HP.

But yes, I agree, the cartridges are SO expensive. I used to go to a place that would refill the cartridges instead of having to buy them. However, they closed :(

  35. Ron, someone is definitely looking out for you! I've heard it said that one man's trash is another's treasure, and you've just gone and proved that!
You're so right about the college kids. When a semester is finished, they throw out nearly EVERYTHING! On Domer's campus, they had what was basically a HUGE garage sale; the kids would toss out what they didn't want (or couldn't haul back home with them), and the town folks (and underclassmen) would show up to pick the leavings. There were ALL kinds of things available.

HA! How true, Mark! What we considered good stuff as a kid is so different as an adult.

Thanks so much for stopping by and catching up on my post. Appreciate that, buddy!

    Have a great week!

    X to you and Tara!

  49. Helloooo Lisa!

"Peanut's Daddy, while working for a company that flipped rentals, would come home with the most fantastic finds. New boots (never worn and just his size), mini frig, 6 foot Christmas tree in a box, nice decorative metal shelving."

    WOW!

"College students are the worst....or best, depending on how you look at it I suppose!"

You're right, I think we were all that way when we were younger. We didn't see or appreciate as we do now.

  52. We've put things on the trash before and then noticed people at the curb picking whatever it was up not to long afterwards. Once an old stove... it didn't even really work... but the interest in it was for scrap metal. We have a recycle yard not too far from us so on trash night a lot of people canvas the area for good finds.
Sounds like you've gotten just what you needed when you needed it. Being in tune with the Universe is a good thing. Beautiful suit.
And 'Dumpster Dan'... lookin' good! ;)
