Post updates by email:

While I was in Kmart last weekend, I just so happened to walk through the main aisle on the second floor and spotted the Back-To-School highlighted area.

You know the area I’m talking about, right?

The area that used to contain all the summer highlighted items, which has recently been transformed into book bags, construction paper, crayons, glue, and pencils.

And I smiled because I was reminded of how much I dreaded school, yet LOVED shopping for school supplies at the start of a new year because everything was so fresh. There is nothing quite like the smell of a freshly sharpened new pencil!

Later that afternoon, I was also reminded of how much I enjoyed my final year in high school. And that’s strange because I had just moved from Pennsylvania to Florida right after my Junior year, which meant that my Senior year would be in a new residence and new school; not knowing anyone.

I was somewhat apprehensive and nervous because back then I was extremely shy, especially when it came to new surroundings and meeting new people.

Growing up I didn’t have many friends. I was a kid, happy and content enjoying my own company or spending time with a few close comrades.

But any reservation I had anticipated was quickly dissolved, as I was welcomed at my new school with open arms. And not only was I welcomed, but I became extremely social.

Yes! I suddenly found myself going to beach parties, bars, getting involved in school activities, auditioning for plays; spending more time socializing than I could have ever imagined.

Moving to Florida was one of the biggest life-altering and positive experiences for me because it was like taking the cork out of a champagne bottle, allowing my bubbles to rise to the surface.

My inner voice, my personality, my talents and passions had all been first realized, embraced and ignited during that single year.

And my family members were delightfully shocked to say the least.

“Is this the same Ronnie who was once quiet, shy and had no interest in socializing?”

I went from not talking much, to Chatty Kathy the Socialite.

It was truly a time of abundant joy and discovery for me, and I will always be grateful to my parents for making that move to Florida because it came at the right time and literally changed my life.

So today, I would like to share some pictorial highlights from my Senior year in high school with you guys and gals.

I edited these photos to make them a bit sharper, yet some are still fuzzy.

But hey, we're talkin' 1973-74.

Please enjoy…

I took this photo of my high school last July, when I visited my mother and brother in Florida.

I would like to conclude this post by saying thank you to the friends and teachers I met during my last year in high school, who were a HUGE part of my growth and development.

Because they were all there during a very important time in my life; nurturing me as I bubbled forth.

And to Florida, because I will always hold these fond memories in my heart.

Lately, and I know it has to do with missing my mother, I have been very conscious of my childhood and young adulthood; feeling reflective and grateful for the time in which I was born and for the wonderful life that both my parents provided for me.

They gave me everything I needed to bring where I am today.

I am blessed.

Have super cool weekend everyone!

  1. Oh, the plaid, plaid, plaid! That is SO awesome that you were able to have such a great senior year. I think it's hard for anyone, popular or not, to make a change so late in the game. Loved the pics! What a cutie you were! (are)
That's so funny because I was at a 5 year old's birthday party last week and we were all talking about how fun it was to BUY school supplies but the actual GOING to school? Not so fun.
Big hugs for missing mom. I hear ya.
    Have a great weekend!

  2. Terrific post and great memories, Ron. I like the school prom pictures, you looked a real dandy. And I see you were getting drama awards even at school. Obviously the move to Florida was a winning one for you and it's great that you have happy memories to look back on. As for buying school supplies, I used to drool over new pencils and new books and it's something that stayed with me. I still like to browse in stationery shops. Perhaps I never really grew up...haha.

Happy Friday, and have a grand weekend.

  3. Fabulous post, Ron! It was a bittersweet start of the school year for me because its the first year I didn't have someone going to public school. I was one of those weirdos who loved going back to school. Home was boring! I'm soooo glad the move to FL changed your life. Sometimes we need to start fresh somewhere new to break out of our shell. I remember that happening to me a few times in life.

Hugs from this mom to you, Ronnie. I know you're missing her.......XO

  4. Wow--you've got some great memories to draw from. That move for the senior year was a life changing move....definitely for the good. One would have thought it the opposite, but boy.....I'm glad it turned that direction for you. Looks like a happy you! HOLY moly that's one huge grill.....how fun to be flipping burgers on that! And the hairstyles and plaids..wide belts and crop tops. Oh yes.....LOL I remember them well. :-)
What I don't remember well is much of my growing up years. Maybe because that's yet to happen? LOL I do remember bits and pieces. And there's a yearbook or two shoved in a box somewhere. Nonono--I'm not going hunting for 'sharing' purposes. OH my gosh, more like 'where is it so I can destroy it'. We keep those things, why? LOL

Happy weekend to you, sir. Betcha do miss your mom. But boy are you graced to have such great memories to pull up any time you like.

  5. Great post! There is a huge difference in your last school year and mine, in a relatively short time, things changed so much.

Going to school in London, meant not many friendships were made. People travelled from a wide area to schools back then. We didn't have any social activities in our school. No drama, no music studies. Nothing at all that helped forge real friendships. It was a pretty non-eventful year in my life. Just waiting to leave and start work.

It's great that you have those memories and photos.

  6. blessed indeed. these pics made me smile. i totally can't imagine you being shy and quiet. you are a social being now. i guess we all go through that shy and quiet stage. i dip in and out of it myself, still.

great too that you have those pics. it's nice to look back. a few months ago, i looked through some old school pics and yes, i had a camera with me even back then, but not every day. i often wonder what happened to my schoolmates though i'm not interested in a reunion.

  7. I really hope at some point in time I can look back at highschool as fondly as you do. I think for me its still a little too fresh- although long enough away- that I don't want it to come back and thinking of it makes it seem like it just might! I was the anti social girl who no one really bothered to mess with. Now though, I connect with people in my own way on my own time. I really like this time in my life more than any school years I have experienced.

  8. What a lovely post, Ron! I'm glad you had the chance to pop your cork and let those bubbles fly!

And these photos are so cool! I wish I could've gone to high school in Boca Raton, as opposed to the medieval dungeon in Brooklyn that I went to.
I love the sight of all those fresh notebooks on the store shelves. I feel like they're just waiting for me to grab them and fill them up with all my brilliant ideas!
You truly are blessed, buddy. I was feeling really cranky and bummed this morning, but after reading this post I realized that I am blessed for knowing you!
Have a bubbly weekend, my friend!

  10. Ron, this made me tear up thinking of your mother. What a beautiful post! I could feel your joy of this school year through your words. And these photo of you and your friends are so great. I love the way you put them together. How clever! Great photo of you in your prom tux.

I was a lot like you when I was a kid, shy and to myself. It was when I got into my Junior and Senior year did I become more social and blossom.

Have a wonderful weekend, Ron. X

    "Oh, the plaid, plaid, plaid!"

HAHAHAHAHAHA! I know, can you BELIEVE that? And the big yellow bow tie!!!

"That's so funny because I was at a 5 year old's birthday party last week and we were all talking about how fun it was to BUY school supplies but the actual GOING to school? Not so fun."

Amen! After the excitement of buying my school supplies worn off, reality hit me....OMG, now I have to actually GO to school...bummer!!!"

"Big hugs for missing mom. I hear ya."

Thank you. I am really missing her right now.

  12. Goooood morning Valerie!

Thank you :) I had a lot of fun putting these pictures together for this post. It was like taking a walk back to my past.

" And I see you were getting drama awards even at school."

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA! Yes, my mother used to refer to me as, "My DRAMATIC son."

"As for buying school supplies, I used to drool over new pencils and new books and it's something that stayed with me."

Meeeee too! And it's funny because I think of today and how everything is primarily done on a computer, I wonder how much schools supplies (like pencils and pens) are even used in school anymore.

Much thanks for stopping by, dear lady. Have a GRAND weekend too!

No, I don't think that's weird at all, I think it's AWESOME that you loved going to school!

" Sometimes we need to start fresh somewhere new to break out of our shell. I remember that happening to me a few times in life."

Yes, it was definitely for the GOOD. And I told my parents many times how grateful I was for that move because it made me blossom.

"HOLY moly that's one huge grill.....how fun to be flipping burgers on that!"

Yes, isn't is HUGE? That was in public beach park in Boca Raton, where we would have our picnics on the weekends. FUN, FUN, FUN!

"What I don't remember well is much of my growing up years. Maybe because that's yet to happen? LOL"

HA! Same here, Mel! I'm STILL growing up.

"And there's a yearbook or two shoved in a box somewhere."

I am so BUMMED because I left my high school yearbook in NYC when I moved back to Florida.

"We didn't have any social activities in our school. No drama, no music studies. Nothing at all that helped forge real friendships. It was a pretty non-eventful year in my life. Just waiting to leave and start work."

That's how I felt about my years spent in Catholic school because back then, Catholic school was focused primarily on traditional education. Years later, did they begin to filter in more studies that had to do with creativity. By the time I had gotten to my Senior year in high school, that's when they were offering 'elective' courses - such as drama.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a wonderful weekend!

"a few months ago, i looked through some old school pics and yes, i had a camera with me even back then, but not every day."

Oh, me too! It was like I wanted capture the MOMENTS. And I'm glad I did because I wouldn't have these pictures.

"i often wonder what happened to my schoolmates though i'm not interested in a reunion."

I went to my 10-year reunion and had a BLAST, but didn't go to any after that. I still keep in contact with one of my high school friends who still lives in Florida.

Yes, that's the way it was for me too, Shae. I really didn't start looking back at high school until much later. I think I was probably in my late 30's.

" I was the anti social girl who no one really bothered to mess with."

Yes, me as well - for most of my school years. But then suddenly in my Senior year, things changed.

"I wish I could've gone to high school in Boca Raton, as opposed to the medieval dungeon in Brooklyn that I went to."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You crack me up, man! But, really, that's how I felt moving to Florida - going from the grayness of the north east, to the bright sunshine of Florida. And yet, I ended up moving back here, isn't that funny? I'm glad I'm back though, to my roots.

"I love the sight of all those fresh notebooks on the store shelves."

Aren't they the coolest? And I STILL love those original marble copybooks, which they still have.

Thank you. I myself teared up thinking of not only my mother, but my father as well while looking at these photos and putting this post together these past few days. I was reminded of what a wonderful life they provided for me.

I put all these photos together over at Picmonkey. They have a whole 'school theme' going on over there that is so much fun!

" It was when I got into my Junior and Senior year did I become more social and blossom."

Did you inwardly cringe at the prospect of moving to a new school? I bet you did, being a shy kid and all. But looking back on it, what a blessing in disguise!

    Great post, dude!

  28. Hiya Matt!

"And I am so digging those checkered pants and jackets!"

HA! Yeah, checkered prints where the RAGE back then. I remember shopping with my friend (in the photo) for our prom tuxedos and both of us wanting checkered, however, I decided to just let him get it, and went with a solid.

"It's so hard for me to think of you as shy and not social because you're so outspoken, open and social on your blog."

When I first started this blog 6 years ago, I was WAY shy of sharing as much as I do now. That has come through my years of blogging. But I will say that blogging has kept me very social, meeting other bloggers in person; becoming close friends offline as well.

So glad your adjustment to a new state/school/friends went so well.
I, too, loved all the new school supplies and their smells. Mmm... fresh crayons, sharpened pencils, construction paper, GLUE. haha!
My grandson is starting 1st grade (can you even believe it!?) and I offered to get him all the items on the supply list. It was fun shopping. Of course, these days, instead of just crayons and pencils... they need dry erase markers and hand sanitizer.
Great old photos, thanks for sharing! Have a wonderful weekend, Ron. xo

  40. Hi Ron. Great post as usual and some fine photos too.

    Two things.
    1) I always hated those Back To School displays, they always appear about two weeks prior to school actually restarting and all they did was serve to remind us that we'd HAVE TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL.
    2) "I just so happened to walk through the main isle on the second floor" Isle? I can only assume that this is,
    i) a typo
ii) yet another American twist on the "English" you speak over there
iii) a rather quaint display, located on a small grassy mound surrounded by water.

    Yours pedantically,

I would say that I was the opposite from you. I hated high school. Never socialized in the school setting. Apart from a few skater friends I didn't really dig people. That all changed when I joined the Air Force. Those four years were the best years of my life, and I wouldn't trade them in for the world!

I do have pictures from that time, but they would only serve to incriminate me in some questionable behavior that Karin wouldn't laugh at. Heh... Yeah, good times. good times.

"I do have pictures from that time, but they would only serve to incriminate me in some questionable behavior that Karin wouldn't laugh at."

    Bwhahahahahhahahaha! OMG...that made me HOWL!

    And I could ONLY imagine!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, buddy. I was thinking of you and the family these past couple of days and wondering how your trip to Disney with Tyler was.

Can't WAIT to read and see all about it!

X to you, Karin, and Mr. Tyler!

  55. "Moving to Florida was one of the biggest life-altering and positive experiences for me because it was like taking the cork out of a champagne bottle, allowing my bubbles to rise to the surface."

    Awww! I love that.

    And these photos? ABSOLUTELY priceless!

  56. I so love the photos! You were very cute in high school. It is fun to look through old photos. I was not a big fan of high school. I guess I was ready to get out and find my way in college.

Actually, me too. It was really only my Senior year in high school that I enjoyed. But even then, I couldn't wait to move to NYC after that summer.

  60. Those are great pictures! I cannot believe we lived so close for so long!

I always love the way you write about your parents. It's nice to know that someone loved their mother and father and appreciated the way they were raised. Having a son as kind, caring, talented and funny as you is a true testament as to how wonderful your parents were.

My memory lane trick is to smell a box of crayons - never fails to bring back the good childhood memories. The weird looks from the kids in the aisle is a plus!

  61. Hey Lady Nitebyrd!!

"I cannot believe we lived so close for so long!"

I KNOW, can you BELIEVE that?!?! And I bet we met each other in passing in Florida at one point, but didn't know!

Aw....thank you so much for your sweet words. Lately, I've been missing both my mother and father, and reflecting on the wonderful life they provided for me. Truly, I had AWESOME parents.
