Post updates by email:

About a week and a half ago, I took a walk over to Love Park because I wanted to check out the Christmas Village.

Love Park is home to the Christmas Village, which is a traditional German Christmas Market, featuring more than 60 vendors in decorated booths and tents with all sorts of holiday goodies including presents, ornaments, jewelry, food and more.

Unfortunately the day I chose to go, most of the vendors were closed due to the heavy snowfall earlier that day. However, I enjoyed myself immensely by just walking around and looking at all the Christmas decorations; taking a slew of photographs.

The thing I love most about the Christmas Village is that it's simple and modest - nothing flashy or commercial - just a homemade and old-fashioned Christmas feel.

And just as I was about to leave, I walked passed a wooden wall (the one you see in the picture above), which had ornaments hanging on it with handwritten wishes.

So I stopped, and began reading some of the wishes. Actually, I read ALL of them. And about halfway through reading, I decided to take pictures of the ornaments and share them with you on my blog. I really didn't know how I was going to present these ornaments, but something inside told me to take the pictures and I would know what to do with them later.

So I did.

Now here's the cool part.

As I was looking through the monitor screen of my camera, I was suddenly overcome with emotion because I could actually feel the energy behind the words on the ornaments written by the people who wrote them; realizing that we are all interconnected to each other, having similar experiences no matter where we live on this earth.

We all experience loss. We all experience pain. We all go through periods of feeling vulnerable and small; needing support from our fellow-human beings, whether it be physical, emotional, a kind word, or even a silent prayer.

So we wish.

At one point, I brought my camera down from my eyes and just stood there crying. But they weren't tears of sadness, no, they were tears of sobering love.

This has been a very enlightening Christmas for me, especially being in retail and seeing how challenging it's been for so many people, financially. People are being tentative with purchases because they simply can't afford it. People seem to be going back the basics of this holiday season; spending time with friends and family, and keeping their gift giving to a minimum.

But then again, perhaps this is what we're learning.

Christmas is not about stuff. It's about giving a gift that costs nothing.

It's about sharing the love within our heart.

So before I left the Christmas Village that day, I said a silent prayer, sharing the love within my own heart to all the wishes on the wall with the intention that they come to be.

It seems that through this experience, I received more than I gave because it taught me something.

Simple. Modest. Just an old-fashioned, Christmas feel.

Love...
And thank you all for your comments while I've been gone last week. I look forward to catching up with you soon! X

That is so true, Ron. As you know my need for support has been huge lately and all the love and good wishes shown to me has been a tremendous help.

Reading those wishes was sobering, there are so many people with worries and heartache in the world. No wonder you were emotional as you read them.

Today is my wedding anniversary and Christmas is two days away so I'm introducing a programme of good cheer into family life. Hopefully Joe will soon tread the path to recovery and we can start to smile again.

Wishing you a peaceful and happy Christmas, and thank you for being there for so many people xx

  3. Oh, Ron, I'm weeping as I type this comment. These wishes are so heartfelt you can actually feel the emotion coming out of them.

I'm so glad you shared these with us. People's feelings tend to get lost at this time of the year when we're supposed to be happy.

"Christmas is not about stuff. It's about giving a gift that costs nothing."

That is so true! The message has gotten lost in the madness to buy things, but the real meaning of Christmas comes from the heart.

Terrific post, buddy! Merry Christmas to you and all your loved ones!

  5. Cheers Ron. Have a good Christmas.
We're not doing anything at all - no tree, no presents, no turkey, nothing.
Although on the upside, we will be able to eat and stay warm, so that's a bonus.

  6. What a beautiful wall! I've been feeling a bit sad because my oldest has to work on Christmas Day, and it will be our last Christmas as a family before she marries. However, I know that her visits to patients' homes on Christmas Day may be the only visit they get, so I'm glad that she is able to brighten their holiday.

As your wall proves, there is both sadness and love associated with the holidays. Thanks for an important reminder to pray for and help out our fellow mankind.

  7. Oh Ron, what a touchingly beautiful Christmas post! And could feel the emotion from the people who wrote these wishes on the the wall, too. They brought tears to my eyes.

You are so correct. It's not about buying things, it's about spending time with those that we love and sharing simple blessings. Simple blessings that many people don't even have.

Thank you for sharing this today, Ron. It's the perfect Christmas post.

    Merry Christmas to you!xo

How true. And I don't know what it is about this particular Christmas for me, but I've really been struck by that realization. I've been very emotional this past week; crying at the drop of a hat. But they're good tears because I've learned something, Christmas is not about stuff, it's about sharing the love within our heart.

Perfect timing on the Universe's part, huh?

What an amazing thing. I adore the wall and the ornament 'wishes'. I find myself wanting to replicate it in a visible spot for\with this little community. I don't know why sharing wishes is so diffict for us...feeling raw and "named", I'd guess. Oh...but we all need that huge slice of love and a dollop of compassion...every day. ;-)

  46. i'm glad the holiday spirit was good for you, ron. i wish the world and people in general would be a lot more kind to people and always display the love they do around the holidays. i don't bother with the holidays because, well you know, but i went out for breakfast this morning and our waitress was so kind to us and volunteered to come in, i wanted to do something nice for her and tipped her 50% of our bill. it made me so happy to be able to do so. her gift to us was coming in to work today, sharing her time, sure it was her job, but we were very appreciative of her service and attitude. little things like that make me happy, so i understand your emotions standing there at the wall. going back to the basis is nice, my wish is for people to go back to being kind to one another. thanks for sharing.

As you say, it isn't about the "stuff" that so many people seem to think will bring happiness and a sense of fulfillment to their lives. Christmas should be a time of renewal and hope. And of reaching out, modern miracles and wishes that still come true.

  57. Hmm, "awesome" is perhaps an exaggerated way to describe being completely broke, (irrespective of my antipathy towards Christmas, I'm sure Elaine and Sam would quite happily relieve me of presents if I was in a position to buy them) but having got used to the idea, it does seem like the more realistic approach.

Ps - Anyone who wants to send me massive wads of free cash to enable me to test this theory may do so c/o Ron. In the mean time I'll go with the skint option.

  59. Hiya Matt!

"This has been a very challenging year for many people I know, both financially and also health-wise. I have several friends who have lost their jobs this year or have family members or friends who are seriously ill or have passed."

Same here! This has been such an eye-opening Christmas for me. I have found myself getting very emotional and reflective, and in a good way. And it's been that way for several people I know. As I shared, perhaps this is what we're learning. Christmas is not about the 'stuff', it's about sharing the love in our heart with each other.

Much thanks for stopping by, buddy. Wishing you a beautiful and heartfelt Christmas!
