Post updates by email:
If any of you ladies or gents who are on Google+ have sent me an email notification to join a circle or connect, and noticed that I haven't respond, it’s not because I’m ignoring you. It’s because I didn’t intentionally join Google+, but rather accidentally clicked the wrong button on my You Tube account associated with that email address.

Google has a way of doing that. They confuse you so that you don't know WHAT to click on; hoping that you'll click on the thing they WANT you to click.

And because I'm not sure I want to get anymore involved with Google+ until I'm 100% certain I want to, I haven't touched a thing on my Google+ page in fear of what it will do. Which is why I haven't joined any circles or connected with anyone. I haven't even set up my profile page because I don't want to mess with it.

The only thing I'm HUGELY grateful for is that my blog is not connected to Google+ because my blog is on a different Google account.

To be honest, I have always had strong reservations about joining Google+ because of the horror stories I’ve read about not being able to unjoin without losing all the services you have connected to that account because they make it nearly impossible to do it. Also, I find Google+ to be VERY invasive. It’s like it wants to get into all your business and merge all your accounts into one; forever using pop-up notifications, asking you, "Would you like to use the same name on this account? Would you like to use one email address?"

And I'm not interested in doing either of those things because I want to keep my two accounts separate.

Sometimes Google gives me the creeps because it’s like they’re always monitoring and watching what you're doing...

As you can tell from the social media buttons on my sidebar, I don’t belong to many. And even the ones I do belong to I don’t really use them to socialize, I use them more for either hosting my pictures and videos, or use them for research. So truthfully, I don't need another social media account.

For me, blogging takes up most of my time. And blogging is where I find the most quality of online socializing, community, and creativity.

Anyway, the reason I wanted to share this post is to get your feedback on Google+, if I could.

Do you use it?
Do you like it?
And if you do use it and like it, what do you use it for and what are some of the benefits?
Or...do you regret ever getting involved with it?

Thank you for your feedback, peeps!

*Note: I'm sure after Google reads this they will delete all my accounts associated with them and abolish me from the Internet. So if I suddenly disappear, please know that I'm probably floating around in cyberspace without any name, rank or serial number.

I'll just be an Internet void. Lost in space...

Have a SUPER weekend everyone!

  1. Ron, you have touched on a subject that needs dealing with ... if I only knew how.

'Do you use it?Do you like it?
And if you do use it and like it, what do you use it for and what are some of the benefits?
Or...do you regret ever getting involved with it?'

    Answers in order of questions:
    No, to both.
    I haven't discovered any benefits!
    Yes!

Like you I was tricked into it though how it happened is a mystery. I didn't look for it and I didn't want it, but suddenly there it was. Mine!
Have you noticed that Google+ snatches your pictures and messes about with them? I recently posted a pic on the blog about Redwing birds and next thing I knew someone or something had turned it into a moving gif. I didn't ask for it and I didn't want it but I couldn't stop it.

As for circles, I am still trying to find the point of them! I gave it a go, thinking it might be interesting ... have now switched off. I'll stick to blogging, thank you very much.

Okay, it's Friday... let's cheer up haha. Have a nice one, dear friend.

  2. Hey, Ron! I don't have much dealings with Google + and after reading your post I don't think I want to, Sounds a bit too 1984 for me.

"Blogging takes up most of my time. And blogging is where I find the most quality of online socializing, community, and creativity."

Sounds fine to me, buddy! You do a great job as a blogger, so why not stick with what works? Take care, have a great weekend, and watch out for the Google-roids!

  4. I feel the same way you do, Ron. I've had multiple issues with it on my iPad and sometimes it won't let me log into Blogger without requesting my cell phone number!!! WTF? I then have to log out and start over as I'm not about to give them a phone number.

I was really pissed last week when I got an email saying that one of my husbands ex-girlfriends from over 30 years ago put me in her Circles. I have no idea how she got my personal email, but suspect it was through another inlaw who must keep in touch with her and she was somehow linked to me. So invasive!

Thanks for allowing us to vent on the topic! Haha

  5. Hi Ron. I have a Google+ account which I use purely to promote Diary of an Internet Nobody and to follow other blogs. I'm not sure I get much traffic from it, but I do know I get a whole shitload of email notifications when anyone I follow posts anything. On average I get about 60 emails a day from Google+ alone.
Absolute ____ing pain in the arse.
    My advice, don't do it.

  6. In a word - Don't.

Of course it's an 'each to his own' thing, but I did join it and only used it for a very short time. Just long enough to make all my various circles and then stopped using it, as I did with almost all the social media sites I've joined, over the years. Facebook is the only one I use and I don't really do a lot on that. I basically continue with Facebook, because I have blogger friends that seem to use Facebook instead of blogging now.

I found Google+, and many others, just a place for people to self promote. I came across a blog, during my photo challenge, that only let me comment using Google+ and it posted my comment to my Google+ account. I was not happy about that.

I fear that Google is becoming just like Big Brother. I think we would be shocked at how much it knows about us and our behaviour. It's even taken over our blog feeds now and I mean self hosted blogs.

There seems to be no way of escaping Google.

  7. P. B******* S! I just opened my account and I've found tons of posts of comments I have made on blogs and Youtube, that I DIDN'T post! How do they do that? I may look to see if there is a way to close my account.

  8. I understand know many people with the same reservations. I was unaware Google collected information and monitored accounts until AFTER I joined!

  10. Ron, I've heard the same thing about Google+, which is why I haven't used it. I know a few people who do use it and said that once they joined, they hated it because all their information was being used after they posted it. So my advice is to not get involved.

Google on the whole has gotten way too invasive and pushy.

Love the last picture of you floating is space!

Have a wonderful weekend Ron x

Great, thanks for letting me know that. And in all honesty, I can't see the benefit it either.

"Like you I was tricked into it though how it happened is a mystery. I didn't look for it and I didn't want it, but suddenly there it was. Mine!"

OMG...can you BELIEVE that?!?! I somehow clicked on something on my You Tube account one day and SUDDENLY...there it was!

"Have you noticed that Google+ snatches your pictures and messes about with them?"

Yes! Yes! Yes! The same thing happened to me! And I couldn't understand HOW that was happening because I hadn't even posted anything on Google+, they were snatching my photos from my blog posts in DRAFT on a practice blog that I use, before I ever even posted them on THIS blog. I did however, figure a way in the settings how to block that from happening.

"I'll stick to blogging, thank you very much."

Yes, I know of other bloggers who use Facebook the same way, just to touch base with either their family members or friends. I had an account on FB for about a year, but deleted it because I never used it.

"I came across a blog, during my photo challenge, that only let me comment using Google+ and it posted my comment to my Google+ account. I was not happy about that."

You know, it's funny you mentioned that because I've been noticing on blogs that I read, but don't usually comment, that they are using the Google+ commenting format. Which I can only believe that those comments are being posted ON Google+ as well.

"It's even taken over our blog feeds now and I mean self hosted blogs."

  20. Ron, the picture of you being lost in Internet Space makes me laugh! I know just what you mean -- there are FAR too many social media options right now, leading the majority of us to sit on the fence and remain undecided.
I have a Google+ account. I think at one point I actually messed with my profile page and put a few peeps in circles. But the whole thing became WAY too cumbersome and time-consuming. When you run your own business, write, blog, and have a life, you can't afford to keep signing up for a gazillion different accounts (too many passwords, ha!)
Besides, as you said, blogging is probably my favorite form of online social interaction. The blogging community is interesting, supportive, creative, and just plain FUN -- why, I'd love to scoop up all my blogging friends, put 'em in a room (with plenty to eat!), and let us communicate to our heart's content!!
Have a fabulous weekend, my dear!

Yes, that's what Google+ seems to me too....WAY cumbersome and time-consuming.

" When you run your own business, write, blog, and have a life, you can't afford to keep signing up for a gazillion different accounts (too many passwords, ha!)"

I soooooooo agree! I mean how many different social media sites can we keep up with and at the same time...do the others things we do? Too much social media seems to distract us from doing what like to do...write, create, and socialize with quality.

  23. Ron, don't do it! I made the mistake of setting up an account on Google+ because practically everyone I knew was doing it. The only thing I can say is that I wished I hadn't. Way too intrusive and all too difficult to figure out how it works. And the emails are non-stop.

  29. I have an account but never use it. I work with social media on a daily basis, as part of my job, and I am not a fan of Google+. More than anything else, I find it unnecessary. We've already got Facebook, which I think Google+ is trying to emulate (and rather poorly, at that). Plus, like you said, they're invasive as hell. They wanted me to link my YouTube account with them, which I might have accidentally done in frustration myself.

"They wanted me to link my YouTube account with them, which I might have accidentally done in frustration myself."

You nailed it right there Ron. I couldn't agree more.

I don't like the direction that Google + seems to be heading. IMO, they are getting way too pushy (for lack of a better word) trying to get bloggers to commit all their content to one place etc...not for me.

With three blogs going and a gazillion projects on the go, I don't need anymore online places/groups to join. That being said, I am on Google + because they gave me no choice with my blogger acct.. But I don't use it unless I have to.

I too want to focus on enjoying posting and reading my fav blogs, not worrying about circles to join, likes, etc..I'm not a FB or Twitter fan either.

WP reader works great for me btw, that I'm fine with. A quick and easy way to keep up with all the WP blogs I follow. That is a timesaver.

"That being said, I am on Google + because they gave me no choice with my blogger acct."

Yes, that's the thing...when you're on Blogger (which IS Google) they give you no choice, or they make it so confusing that you mistakenly click the wrong button which MAKES you join.

  47. Most folks were thrilled when google maps happened--you could see your house,
your garage--and whatever you hadn't killed off on the patio. Frankly, it
creeped me out. It's great for having a close up look at the places you didn't
get around to investigating at The Grand Canyon and Yosemite. And that's the
only thing I really use the 'satelite' view for. I'm probably a bit 'hyper
sensitive' to the privacy deal--and the wrong one to ask an opinion about when
it comes to google+ or FB or any of the other social medias out there.

    I don't use them. I don't FB. I don't Tweet. I don't + my google.
    *laughing*

I'm one who goes back it to redo my preferences/settings after doing a
cleanup of the laptop/desktop. Some of them return to 'default' when you do
that. What I'm interested in purchasing is NONE of my computer's business--or
Microsoft's or Googles or Amazon's. And I really don't care to be seeing
advertisements for cameras for a month of Sundays just cuz I was researching
prior to purchasing mine. And given mine's in the SHOP already--I REALLY don't
    wanna see the advertisements, tyvm.

    *sigh*

There's a whole lot going on in the world of technology--and it's GOOD
stuff. Unfortunately, some of that good stuff gets used as a means to an end
--and it's really (In my NOT so humble opinion) hurtful, invasive and
    disrespectful.

"What I'm interested in purchasing is NONE of my computer's business--or Microsoft's or Googles or Amazon's."

OMG...don't you just hate that? It amazes me how after Googling a product online, the next website I go to has the exactly THING I was Googling for in their advertisement! It's like Google is WATCHING everything you do!

"There's a whole lot going on in the world of technology--and it's GOOD stuff. Unfortunately, some of that good stuff gets used as a means to an end.."

    I TOTALLY agree!

Much thanks for stopping by, dear lady! Hope you're having a maaaaaavelous weekend!

  50. Hellooooooooo Lauren!

    "I don't understand Google+."

Me neither. I honestly don't understand it and how it all works. It's VERY confusing and WAY too hard to get the hang of.

"Just when I had my email inbox the way I liked it, they changed the entire format."

OMG...THANK YOU VERY MUCH and I AGREE! Google is forever changing stuff. And not only with their email format, but with everything else too. They're always changing something on Blogger. Always.

"We are all slaves to Google, the omnipotent Internet overlord."

    Yup...sad, but so true!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Lauren. Always a delight to see your comments! Hope you're having a super weekend!

  51. Okay as far as Google+ is concerned:

    Do you use it?
I have an account, but I barely use it. I only post my new post blog links there, much like I use twitter. Aside from my blog, the two main social media sites I use are Facebook & Instagram.

    Do you like it?
I don't use it enough, or understand enough of the features, to "like" it or "dislike' it.

And if you do use it and like it, what do you use it for and what are some of the benefits?
    I have NO IDEA! lolz

Or...do you regret ever getting involved with it?
Not really. I mostly ignore the activity happening so it doesn't interfere with my life.

  52. Meleah, thanks SO MUCH for sharing your feedback!

I knew you were on Facebook and Instagram and enjoyed them, so I always wondered if you had tried Google+ and whether you found it to be anything great. People seem to either REALLY like, not like, or like you...feel so-so about it.

To me, it just seems way too confusing and invasive. So, I think I'm gonna just let it be as is and not get anymore involved until I can find a way to delete it without deleting my other services associated with it.

Again, thanks for your feedback, girl!

  54. At one point I decided to try Google+. Bad, bad, bad decision. I hated it. And the worse thing was trying to get rid of it was like trying to get out of jail after being wrongly convicted of a crime.

You are so right about the way Google does things. They constantly try to get you to join that piece of shit application by any means possible.

Sorry I'm late commenting. Have been really busy the last few days.

  55. Helloooooooo David!

No worries, buddy. Please stop by whenever you have time. And I totally understand because this weekend I was very busy myself.

"At one point I decided to try Google+. Bad, bad, bad decision. I hated it. And the worse thing was trying to get rid of it was like trying to get out of jail after being wrongly convicted of a crime."

Yup, that seems to be the general consensus from the comments here about Google+.

"You are so right about the way Google does things. They constantly try to get you to join that piece of shit application by any means possible."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You are soooo right, man!

Thanks so much for stopping by. Hope you're weekend was awesome!

  56. Jeezy Creezy...you ain't kidding. Google is trying to shore horn its way into our lives more and more each day. I have a Google+ account, but I'm not sure how I came about getting it. I use it to leave blog comments, but for nothing more. And, quite frankly, I'd like to drop the thing completely, but it makes things just too convenient when blogging. Argh! What to do? What to do....

  57. Hey there Herman!

"Google is trying to shore horn its way into our lives more and more each day."

    You got that right, man!

"I have a Google+ account, but I'm not sure how I came about getting it. I use it to leave blog comments, but for nothing more."

Yes, I've seen Google+ commenting on some blogs as well. They even suggested it for those of us who use Blogger as our platform, but I refuse to use it. I know of one other Blogger blogger who did try it, but it took them forever to get rid of it.

Much thanks for stopping by, buddy. Hope your weekend was awesome! Enjoy the Super Bowl tonight!

X to you, Karin, and Mr. Tyler!

  58. i use google+ but sometimes i forget i have it. regardless, i think google or sites will find a way to track us.

i'm careful about what i post and as long as i don't put anything out there that i wouldn't want anyone to know, track on google. my life is rather boring.

i don't like it or hate it, it's just there. if anything it's a cross post of what i have already posted somewhere else.

you are smart to limit yourself from a time perspective. these social sites take time to manage. i don't have the time i use now to do what i do socially so adding something else is really a waste of time. when i don't have time, i don't post and really don't care about maintaining it. probably there to show case my photography and maybe keep in touch with one friend.

  59. Hey there Val!

"i use google+ but sometimes i forget i have it. regardless, i think google or sites will find a way to track us."

I know, doesn't that amaze you? Google will always find ways to track us. It's like they're Big Brother.

i don't like it or hate it, it's just there. if anything it's a cross post of what i have already posted somewhere else."

Yes, I've noticed that on some Google+ pages, a cross post of what has already been posted on someone's blog.

"these social sites take time to manage."

Amen! I don't how some people do it!? I read one blog, where the author is on EVERY SINGLE social media there is - and she updates them daily.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your feedback, girl. Appreciate it! Have a grrrrreat Monday!

  66. g+ is proof that Google has decided go drop the pretense of acknowledging what the user wants and instead dictating to people how they will use the Google-controlled internet.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I was just about to share one of your Zazzle pictures on G+. I will share on Pinterest instead as I see that's a network you use. I'm okay with G+ but with all the stuff I'm doing with my business it's kind of hard to stop using these networks. I have to say I'm so over FB. I'm still on there for the business stuff, a little, and will check personal things here and there but it's become totally small business unfriendly. The reality is that all of these networks have the goods on us. If you've got a digital footprint at all you're kind of screwed. Hate to say it.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Aw...thank you, Jen :)

Yes, I just started with Pinterest about 3-4 months ago and I like it because I've discovered some really stuff there. As I shared, I don't use it to socialize much, but more so to research things I might be looking for and to promote some of my product review posts and photographs.

"The reality is that all of these networks have the goods on us. If you've got a digital footprint at all you're kind of screwed. Hate to say it."

You are sooooooooo right about that! Once you get online and begin using these networks, the goods are out there. But the thing that really bothers me about Google+ is that it's so aggressive and invasive.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your knowledge on this post!

  69. Hey there Dale!

" I have a Google+ account which I use purely to promote Diary of an Internet Nobody and to follow other blogs. I'm not sure I get much traffic from it..."

Yes, that's another thing I've read online. People are not seeing any results from using.

"...but I do know I get a whole shitload of email notifications when anyone I follow posts anything. On average I get about 60 emails a day from Google+ alone."

HA! Me too, and I don't even USE it. I constantly get emails.

"Absolute ____ing pain in the arse."

Amen! And I will take your advice and not get anymore involved.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your feedback, buddy. Appreciate it.

    Have a super weekend!

  70. I accidentally clicked on joining Google plus a couple of years ago and haven't touched it since. No interest. I have several gmail accounts and want them completely separate. The only social media accounts I have are facebook and blogger, and I keep those separate as well. Oh, and now and again I've done online dating sites, which I DEFINITELY want separate from the rest of my on-line life!!! A friend of mine suggested google plus as "a great way to consolidate your online presence." I wrote back, "But I don't WANT to consolidate my online presence!"

  71. Hey ho Robert!

"I think they must have changed the interface 100 times in the past two years. Every time I use it something has either been added or subtracted."

HA! OMG...you are sooooooooo right about that! They are forever changing the interface and how you send an email! I remember when they changed it the last time and I couldn't find where the attachment icon was. I kept clicking on all the icons to find it. Also, the various text buttons were all different.

"No, I won't be joining Google+ because I really don't have a use for it. And after reading what you and others have said about it, it sounds like a nightmare."

It IS a nightmare!!!!!!! And if I can ever find a way to delete that service without deleting my other services, I will!

Yup...Google is taking over the Internet world!

Thanks for stopping by, bud. And have a most excellent weekend!

  72. Ron, the only service I use from Google is their email, and even that I find frustrating. I think they must have changed the interface 100 times in the past two years. Every time I use it something has either been added or subtracted.

No, I won't be joining Google+ because I really don't have a use for it. And after reading what you and others have said about it, it sounds like a nightmare.

Google seems to be taking over the Internet world!
