I know that summer doesn’t officially begin until June 21st, however, in my own mind I believe it begins on June 1st. So for me, summer started a week ago.

Now if you’ve been reading my blog for the past 6 ½ years, you know that summer has never been one of my favorite seasons because high heat and humidity cause my body as much physical pain as does the cold of winter for most of you. Yes, I realize that makes no sense whatsoever, but what can I tell you, my body would rather be cold than hot.

I was a penguin in a past life.

Yet, since there is nothing I can really do about summer, outside of complaining about it, which I’ve decided not to do anymore because it only makes it worse, two years ago I changed my attitude and began embracing summer. And do you know what? I’ve really started to enjoy it! In fact, I actually began sitting outside in the sun back in May, just to get a bit of sun-kissed color and Vitamin D. And I must say that it really made me feel good, inside and out.

Yup, even though summer may not ever be one of my favorite seasons, I’m learning to see all the good things it offers.

So, to honor the start of summer, I took my camera outside yesterday, which was a stunningly gorgeous Sunday and snapped photographs of summertime in Philly.

Please enjoy...

Rooftop swimming pools on hotels and apartment buildings in the city, opened on Memorial Day. Don't you just want to dive in?

Now that the weather is warmer, all the outside cafes are filled to capacity with customers. Oh, and btw, right before I took this shot of the attractive couple you see in this photo, he gave her a kiss. Which is why he's smiling. Awwwww

Four young ladies having Sunday brunch at an outside cafe, not far from where I live. This photo reminds me of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte from the TV show, Sex and the City.

It was Gay Pride in Philadelphia this weekend, so these next two photographs are of street vendors selling their rainbow flag items. Notice his tulle rainbow tutu. I would have purchased one and twirled around the streets, but I only carry a debit card.

Don't you freakin' love those umbrella hats? Aren't they a HOOT?

Doesn't this cafe just glow with a summertime feel?

I love seeing all the people in the public parks, walking their dogs.

This little cutie was sitting next to me in the grass. I asked him to smile for the photo, but all he gave me was a distance stare.

I spotted this group of daddies in the park. And what was so beautiful about them was that they were so tentative, gentle, and loving with their children. It was so touching to watch them.

PRODUCE. One of my favorite things about summer. Yummy!

Happy pre-summer, y'all!

  1. Oh I loved these photographs, daddies and dogs in particular. Thank goodness you are now amenable to summer, think of the Vitamin C and D you'll get, which we all need. I'm told the body doesn't retain Vit.C. so we need to top up as often as we can. I wonder if those umbrella hats are destined to arrive in the UK... I'll have one if they do.

Great post, Ron, it made me feel quite lighthearted x

  4. As always your pictures make me so jealous! They are so gorgeous and you know how to capture a moment. For some reason I was really drawn to the couple in the outdoor cafe. It really captures the essence of young love. Such an amazing feeling and summer is definitely in the air!

  5. Hey, Ron, so glad you're finally warming up to summer. It's time to suppress your inner penguin and enjoy the heat and humidity!

Love these photos--they really do tell the story of summer. Everybody's outdoors loving life. You can't beat it!

And that reminds me--I gotta out and get me one of those umbrella hats!

Have a great week, buddy, and enjoy the summer!

  6. Oh Ron, the photographs of the daddies with their children are so sweet because you can really feel the tenderness. I love to see fathers with their children, it's so precious. The second photo of the daddy is especially touching.

Your pictures always impress me because you really know how to capture a feeling, particularly the ones with people in them, like the one of the couple sitting at the cafe and the four girls having brunch. They do look a scene for Sex and the City. I miss that show.

And I love the gentleman in the tulle tutu!

Fun post, Ron. Have a wonderful week x

  7. Good morning Valerie!

Aren't the daddies sweet? I was sitting there watching them being so tentative and gentle with their children. It was so touching.

"Thank goodness you are now amenable to summer, think of the Vitamin C and D you'll get, which we all need."

Yes, you're absolutely right. I feel like a born-again summer person - HA! The only time summer really gets to me is around July, when it's very, very hot and humid. Oh well, there is nothing I can do about it, so why not focus on the enjoyable stuff, right?

" I wonder if those umbrella hats are destined to arrive in the UK... I'll have one if they do"

    Aren't they faaaaaabulous?

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a lovely week!

Thank you :) I had so much fun taking these photos yesterday. It was a gorgeous day, too.

God, do you remember you and I in NYC last June and how HOT it was; ducking inside any place that was air-conditioned? I think we must have drank 10 bottles of water each - HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a SUPER week!

  9. "See I told you summer is good!"

Yup, is sure is, Pearl! And do you remember how many posts I wrote over the past 6 1/2 years, whining about it? But I have to say, I'm really enjoying summer much more now.

"especially the ones of the Daddy's with their children."

Are the daddies so sweet? I just had to get a few pictures of them with their children.

Thanks so much for stopping by, m'dear. Have a lovely week!

  10. Hey there Shae!

Thank you :) I had so much fun taking these photos yesterday. There were so many people on the streets, enjoying summer, so they were very easy photographs to capture.

"For some reason I was really drawn to the couple in the outdoor cafe. It really captures the essence of young love."

Yes, it certainly does. I was watching them from across the street and smiled when he kissed her. I'm SUCH a romance freak.

Me too, and you're so right...it's time to get out there an embrace summer and put my inner penguin on hold - HA!

" Everybody's outdoors loving life. You can't beat it!"

Yes, and you, living in a city as well, know how the streets get filled with people enjoying the summer.

  12. Hola Denise!

" I love to see fathers with their children, it's so precious."

OMG...meee too! Because there something so beautifully touching about seeing a father being so tender and gentle with his children. It's like strength and gentleness combined.

I so enjoy pictures with people in them because they seem to tell a story, captured in a single moment. Also, people photos seem more active.

" and the four girls having brunch. They do look a scene for Sex and the City. I miss that show."

HA! That's the first I though when I saw them sitting there - a scene from Sex and the City! I miss that show too!

All your pics are fab, but boy, that cafe with all the pots is magnificent! And now I can't wait to eat some fresh corn! I made a strawberry rhubarb pie yesterday. Soooo good! Isn't summer GRAND?

Thank you, that shot of the cafe is where I snapped the photograph of the "milk crate light fixture" in my post last week. It's such a charming cafe.

" I can't wait to eat some fresh corn!"

Meeeeeee too!!!!! LOVE me some corn on the cob!

  15. If you were a penguin in a past life, then I was a polar bear who mated with an Eskimo. 'Cause you know I feel the same way you do about heat and humidity!

Having said that, like you, I do find some things about summer appealing. Like the produce, and the women who like to show off a little leg, and...umm...the produce....

  16. "If you were a penguin in a past life, then I was a polar bear who mated with an Eskimo."

HAHAHHAHAHA! Mark..that's HILARIOUS! And yes, I think you and I are probably the only two people who feel this way about the winter and cold. We LOVE it!

"Like the produce, and the women who like to show off a little leg, and...umm...the produce...."

HA! I had a feeling you would mention something about their LEGS. And doesn't the girl in the first cafe photo have gorgeous legs?

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, buddy! Have a faaaaaabulous week!

    X to you and Tara!

  17. "I was a penguin in a past life." lol! Ron, I'm the same way. I would much rather be cold than hot. And high humidity is the worst. Maybe it's a guy thing, but so many other men I talk to don't mind the cold, but can't stand to be hot. I don't mind summer, but I just don't care for the end of July and August when it's sweltering. Thank god for A/C!

Great pictures, dude. Beautiful shot of the cafe. And that is one BIG poodle!

  18. "I was a penguin in a past life." HaHa, got a kick out of this, Ron! My former MIL was just the same -- crank the heat past 70 and she was miserable. I guess some people's inner thermostats just don't do high temps and humidity.

Lovely photos once again. The dogs really captured my attention, particularly the fuzzy little starer and that white poodle! Dallas loves to go for walks when the temps warm (but not too warm -- he has a double-coat, you know!)

Pass me some of that fresh watermelon -- mmmm!

    Have a super Monday, too!

  19. Hiya Matt!

" Maybe it's a guy thing, but so many other men I talk to don't mind the cold, but can't stand to be hot."

Yes, I think it must be primarily a guy thing, yet I've also met several women who can't stand to be hot as well. They're much more comfortable cold.

"but I just don't care for the end of July and August when it's sweltering."

OMG...I agree! As it moves into July, the heat and humidity get sweltering. Thank god for AC is right.

"And that is one BIG poodle!"

Yes, isn't it? I thought the same thing. I think it might be a show dog because of its stance and they way it's so perfectly groomed.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a most excellent week!

  20. Hellooooooooo Debbie!

Yup..I think I was a penguin in a past life because the cold doesn't bother me at all, even when the temps reach single digits. I love it.

"My former MIL was just the same -- crank the heat past 70 and she was miserable. I guess some people's inner thermostats just don't do high temps and humidity."

Yes, you're right...I think people's inner thermostats are different. Some feel more comfortable cold, while others prefer the heat. Now what's really funny is that I used to LOVE the heat, but after turning 45, it really started to bother me.

" The dogs really captured my attention, particularly the fuzzy little starer and that white poodle!"

Aren't the doggies faaaaabulous? I was so thinking of you when I took those photos. Yesterday, there were so many dogs in the park.

"Pass me some of that fresh watermelon -- mmmm!"

Amen! I had some watermelon about two weeks ago and it was delicious!

Aren't the little babies precious? And to watch those daddies taking such sweet care of their children was so touching to me. You could feel all the love.

Isn't it a charming place? That cafe is where I took the photograph of the 'milk crate light fixture' which I posted last week. I haven't actually been inside yet to look around, but I will. It looks so cozy and inviting.

"I don't enjoy the high heat and humidity either, but I also don't enjoy the dead of winter. My favorite seasons are fall and spring because they're right in middle."

Yup, I know many who feel the same as you, so I understand. I love fall and spring as well. Especially FALL. OMG...I love it! But I have to say, I'm getting to enjoy summer more and more.

I love summer fruit too, but have never liked any time of melon - I know most people look at me like I've grown a second head, but I just cannot stand the taste or texture of melon.

That first photo made me want to dive right into the past and swim in our local neighborhood's hangout, Bayonne Pool, where my family, friends, and I were kids singing and dancing around the jukebox to the Four Seasons! And just blogged about the film FOUR SEASONS.
And absolutely stunning photos, Ron! In my opinion, your canine "cutie" was playing coy. ;)) And your rainbow colored photo immediately reminded me that gay pride is coming up in NYC where my niece and g/f have attended for some years...

Good plan Ron re: embracing summer. I'm going to work on that myself this year. Although, this year in BC, there hasn't been anything to complain about so far. It's been glorious weather here, warm but with a nice, cooling breeze to go along with the sunshine, every day. Love it! And as you might remember, I am also NOT and in a big way, a fan of really hot weather.

I loved your photos, the doggies and the food most of all...what a beautiful city you live in.

"And as you might remember, I am also NOT and in a big way, a fan of really hot weather."

Yes, I do remember you mentioning that on your blog. Isn't the really hot weather (around July and August) the worst? But I'm glad to hear that you've have some gorgeous weather in BC so far, this year. It's been the same here. In fact, today I was outside all day - sunny, breezy and cool. YAHOOOO!

Me as well, Mary! And that's one of the things I enjoy about living on northeast coast again, the change of seasons. In Florida, it's just one looooooooong summer. And even though I love winter, I don't think I would love it as much if it were constant, without Spring, Summer, and Fall.
