Primarily if I drink coffee to go, it’s Starbucks. However, every once in a blue moon I’ll grab a cup of Dunkin’ Donut’s coffee, at which time I will usually grab one of their delicious sesame seed bagels with cream cheese as well.

One night last week I was on the phone with my nephews’ wife, Grace, (Hi, Grace!) and we were talking about different brands of coffee because the two of us are java lovers. In fact, we love it so much that we can't even begin to think about starting our day without having a cup. Except for me, it's more like an IV drip into my arm for 30 minutes before I can string words together to form a coherent sentence. Anyway, somehow we ended up discussing Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and both felt that it wasn't hearty enough for our taste because we like a richer, stronger coffee. Yet, we agreed that is was probably the HOTTEST coffee you could ever drink.

And I’m not just talking hot….I’m talking CENTER OF THE EARTH HOT.

Dunkin’ Donuts coffee is like sipping lava from a volcano that erupted in Pompeii.

It’s the kind of hot that melts your lips, tongue and teeth, while singeing off your nose hairs, causing you to hail a cab and drive to the nearest burn treatment center.

It seems that whenever I get a cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, I have to take the lid off, throw in a 5 Ib. bag of ice cubes, and then let it cool down overnight before I can take my first sip.

Don’t get me wrong, I like my coffee hot, but not when it’s so hot you can’t even taste the coffee because it scalds your taste buds to the point of feeling like they've been individually burned off with a soldering iron.

I often think, “What kind of high-powered coffee brewer do they use that makes their coffee so hot and KEEPS it hot?”

Because whatever brewer they do use, their coffee appears to have been brewed to 1,292 to 2,192 °F and what I imagine the temperatures to be in HELL.

Well, I guess that’s what Dunkin’ Donuts tagline means when it says, “One Taste And You’ll Understand.”
What bitchin' HOT is...

Wishing you a cool Mondayy'all!

  1. '1,292 to 2,192 °F'... gosh that IS hot. Judging by your description of this coffee it's a wonder you have any mouth left after taking a sip. I used to love hot coffee but obviously never as hot as Dunkin Donuts 'cause we don't have them here..at least I don't think so.

Gone are the days when I could drink coffee...when I took it black and hot and often ... like maybe twenty cups a day or more, sometimes in a mug and sometimes in tiny cups, you know the sort. Then one day I began to wonder why I had an upset gullet and finally discovered it was the hot coffee. I stopped drinking it there and then.... BUT as I later learned it wasn't the coffee it was the heat. I can't drink anything hot now.

Love that photo of the erupting volcano.

    Happy Monday xx

  2. It is totally freakin' unbelievable how HOT it is!!! I am a daily customer and have had MANY conversations with the DD folks about this!! I ALWAYS order WITH ice to COOL it down so that I do not BURN my tongue off!! They said it is a Corporate Rule that they have to brew it to a certain temperature...whatever....I agree with you...it is like BOILING! Happy Monday Ron!!

  3. I've never had a Dunkin' Donuts coffee, but can't drink anything too hot. Mo's cup is empty before I even start drinking mine and I call her asbestos throat :)

  4. Oh, I know what you mean Ron! Since I used to get my DD with cream and a bit of sugar I never got the full effect though. It was hot, but probably more like 800-1000 degrees. hehe I used to really like their coffee because it wasn't as bold. That was always what I didn't like about Starbucks. Whew.. it was so strong it could help you grow hair on your chest! ;) Then they came out with a 'blonde' roast, which I liked at first, but then it gave me heartburn. LOL Lately though, I've been into a darker roast kick... sipping Chock Full of Nuts dark, bold 100% New York variety right now actually. But since I still put non-dairy creamer and raw sugar in it, I'm not really tasting the full flavor of the coffee either. Atleast the home brew isn't melt your face off hot though!

  5. I'm sitting here cracking up at your descriptions! I guess they didn't hear about the time someone sued Mickey D's over their too hot coffee?

We are just now getting Dunkin Donut franchises in our area. I have never had their coffee, but was disappointed in their donut selection. If you have the word 'donut' in your title, you should have more than 6 donut choices in your store!

I like Panera's hazelnut coffee if I'm getting coffee out.

  6. Whoa, Ron, this post is hot to trot!

I love your descriptions of the Dunkin' Donuts coffee:

"Dunkin’ Donuts coffee is like sipping lava from a volcano that erupted in Pompeii."

Brilliant! I'm not even a coffee-drinker and I completely get it!

Incidentally, my doctor recommends drinking hot tea to fend off colds and other illnesses, especially during the winter months.

He says it keeps the throat and nasal passages moist and prevents germs from sticking around--literally! Of course, me, being Mr. Overkill, I put my hot tea in the microwave, just to make sure it's scalding and then I guzzle it until I have smoke coming out of my ears! i think the germs are too frightened to hang around me!

Great post, buddy! Hope your week is hot, hot, hot!

  7. Super hot (like super cold) does not enhance the flavor - masks it actually - maybe that's why they serve it at volcanic levels?

  8. Ron, I'm sitting here at my work desk and laughing so hard at this post. Your descriptions are always so funny! How do you come up with these things? It's true, DD coffee is the hottest coffee ever. I like their coffee, but prefer to buy it by the pound and brew it myself at home. I love their bagels too!

Great post, Ron. Thank you for the laughs. I needed this today. x

  9. Goood morning Valerie!

"'1,292 to 2,192 °F'... gosh that IS hot."

HA! That's a 'slight' exaggeration, but not by much :)

" I used to love hot coffee but obviously never as hot as Dunkin Donuts 'cause we don't have them here..at least I don't think so."

I love my coffee too and prefer hot over cold, but OMG...Dunkin' Donuts' coffee is waaaaaaaaaay too hot to even taste.

"Then one day I began to wonder why I had an upset gullet and finally discovered it was the hot coffee. I stopped drinking it there and then.... BUT as I later learned it wasn't the coffee it was the heat. I can't drink anything hot now."

Interesting you mentioned that because hot things do the same to stomach, which is why I can't eat anything spicy. If I eat Mexican food (which I love) it has to be mildly seasoned.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a lovely week!

"I am a daily customer and have had MANY conversations with the DD folks about this!! I ALWAYS order WITH ice to COOL it down so that I do not BURN my tongue off!!"

Yes, I've had conversations with people about this too and MANY agree....it's waaaaaaaaay too hot.

"They said it is a Corporate Rule that they have to brew it to a certain temperature..."

When I was putting this post together, I spotted several articles online which said that customers have tried to sue them for being burned from their coffee, so you would think that they would alter the temperature.

Much thanks for stopping by, my friend. Happy Monday and week!

HA! Yes, Mary, I know so many people who feel the same way about Starbucks versus DD. But I think because I've been drinking Starbucks for so long, DD coffee just doesn't have the 'heartiness' that I enjoy in coffee. However, I will drink it every once in a while. I LOVE their bagels, muffins and donuts!

" I've been into a darker roast kick... sipping Chock Full of Nuts dark, bold 100% New York variety right now actually."

OMG...Chock Full of Nuts is probably my favorite brand of coffee to purchase in the grocery store. Sometimes Super Fresh will have it on sale ($2.99) so I'll buy a couple of them.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, neighbor. Have a super week!

  13. Hey there Bijoux!

" I guess they didn't hear about the time someone sued Mickey D's over their too hot coffee?"

Ironic you mentioned that because while putting this post together, I spotted several articles online where customers tried to sue Dunkin' Donuts over their too hot coffee. So you would think that they would have altered their temps.

"I have never had their coffee, but was disappointed in their donut selection. If you have the word 'donut' in your title, you should have more than 6 donut choices in your store!"

You're right. I think what's happened is that DD has gotten more and more items in their stores (bagels, muffins, croissants, and breakfast sandwiches) that they've cut back on their selection of donuts.

"I like Panera's hazelnut coffee if I'm getting coffee out."

Yes, and not only do I enjoy Panera's coffee, but their food is faaaaaabulous! In fact, they just recently opened a Panera Bread in Philly.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a super week!

  14. Hey there Rob!

The first thing that came to my mind when describing DD coffee was lava from a volcano - HA!

"Incidentally, my doctor recommends drinking hot tea to fend off colds and other illnesses, especially during the winter months."

Yes, I've heard that. And I do drink hot tea as well, but mainly in the winter because it feels so wonderfully warming and cozy. I love Chamomile tea!

"Of course, me, being Mr. Overkill, I put my hot tea in the microwave, just to make sure it's scalding and then I guzzle it until I have smoke coming out of my ears! i think the germs are too frightened to hang around me!"

HAHAHAHHAAHAHA! Rob, that cracked me up! I'm a microwave user too, and damn, doesn't it make things soooooo HOT?

" I like their coffee, but prefer to buy it by the pound and brew it myself at home. I love their bagels too!"

I've done the same thing. In fact, someone actually GAVE me a pound of DD coffee last month because they bought a ton of it. I enjoyed it more than buying it to go because I was able to add more coffee grounds and make it stronger. Also, it wasn't nearly as hot.

My favorite way to make coffee is by French pressing.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a fantabulous week!

  18. I wouldn't know, Ron. Dunkin' Donuts is about as rare in these parts as the dodo. Seeing one would be like locating the Holy Grail. On my road trip 3 years ago, I even tried to find one, but to no avail. I do have to say, I'm surprised to hear they sell bagels. Maybe they should just change their name to Dunkin' Things With Holes In Them instead.

    ReplyDelete
  19. No Dunkin' Donuts here so I can't compare. I prefer my coffee brewed at home in my little Keurig machine because then I can have the flavor I want (this morning I'm drinking Butter Toffee), with a little Truvia (stevia sweetener) & a little milk. I find the flavored coffees taste better with some "fixins."

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ron, I don't drink coffee but this post was hilarious. "Dunkin’ Donuts coffee is like sipping lava from a volcano that erupted in Pompeii." ROLFLMAO. No one tells a story like you and with as much dramatic flair! But I trust you that it's bitchin' hot.

    Great post, dude!

Benze, more and more people I talk with say that they use a Keurig machine. In fact, my nephews' wife uses one and she LOVES it. And for the reasons you mentioned.

I use a French press to brew my coffee. It takes a little longer but I like the taste.

  23. Another thing we seem similar on. It is only in the last couple of months that I've been able to eat the slightest hot spicy food! I love food with plenty of flavour, but hot spices have always burned my mouth too much. Chilli is a big no for me :)

  24. "I love food with plenty of flavour, but hot spices have always burned my mouth too much. Chilli is a big no for me :)"

Same here, Babs! And sometimes I think when a food has so much spice in it, you can't taste the food. You're right, there is a difference between "flavor" and just plain "spicy."

  25. Hey there Ronnie! Now I know I am biased here, but I have to say I have no idea how coffee could ever be too hott! I am a Dunkin lover through and through. I will admit I had a fling with Starbucks in my college years but that was a time to experiment, it didn't mean anything, and Dunkin understands. But coffee too hott? That is just silly to me. I think you may have inspired Friday's blog post my friend...

" Now I know I am biased here, but I have to say I have no idea how coffee could ever be too hott! I am a Dunkin lover through and through."

To me, a coffee is too hot when I can't actually taste the coffee. But hey, we're all different, so if you like hot, hot coffee...then Dunkin' Donuts is perfect :)

  27. Ron, I'm woefully inadequate at weighing in on coffee. I haven't drunk it since I was a kid (and took it with so much milk and sugar then that it didn't taste much like coffee at all!)
I'm a tea-drinker. Black. With sugar. I know honey would probably be healthier, but I can't abide the smell, ha! (even though I LOVE honey apart from tea!)
Perhaps it's for the best that I'm not a coffee-person. We don't have a Dunkin' Donuts in my little town (we do have Starbucks); my visits to Dunkin' are for the DONUTS!!
    Happy week to you!

  29. I'm not sure if I can remember having Dunkin Donuts coffee. But I don't care for Starbucks myself. Too bitter. It tastes like it's been burned to me. I drink coffee every single morning (and some evenings a cup of decaf if my son is here and he wants some). But I grind my own beans and make it fresh so that it's exactly the way I like it. I drink my coffee black with sugar, usually. Hot, but not of the Pompeii-level of hotness. And I only drink un-flavored coffees. No hazelnut, no moccachinos, no vanilla lattes, no caramel-whatchmacallits. I think the only flavor coffee should be is coffee-flavored.

  30. Ron, I read your post at work this morning but didn't have time to leave comment, but I'll tell you it made me laugh!

"I have to take the lid off, throw in a 5 Ib. bag of ice cubes, and then let it cool down overnight before I can take my first sip."

    You're a pisser!

I'm not a coffee connoisseur by any means because I'll drink anything. But I agree that Dunkin' Donuts coffee is HOT. We will sometimes do a group takeout at work, and even by time it gets to the office I still have to take the lid off and let it cool down before I can drink it. I'm even one of those coffee drinkers who will drink my coffee after it gets cold, yet I don't care for iced coffee. That doesn't make sense does it?

Love the picture of the volcano in Pompeii!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hiya Debbie!

"Perhaps it's for the best that I'm not a coffee-person."

Yes, I know plenty of people who are not coffee drinkers, but instead prefer tea. I drink tea as well, but mainly herbal tea's. I like a cup of Chamomile tea at night sometimes because it's very relaxing. I used to drink a lot of iced tea when I lived in Florida but found that it irritated my stomach, so I stopped drinking it. I read somewhere that regular tea (not herbal) has more acid and caffeine in it than coffee, which is why it probably bothered my stomach.

"my visits to Dunkin' are for the DONUTS!!"

Yes, I love their donuts and bagels. Yummy!

So, back to the subject at hand...java...omg, I'm thinking of the scene now! Yikes!
I love Dunkin Donuts' boston crème pie and always have a cup of their coffee with it. It must be a Pavlovian donut thing, because I'm not crazy for their coffee. Perhaps it's a blessing, because I can do without a boston crème pie donut every day! ;))

I.....am NOT a casual coffee drinker. And I want what I want....NOW. So having to be placed on pause while I wait for it to become drinkable......ain't happening!

I remember the McDonald's lawsuit and the subsequent warning we now get on every cup of coffee sold in a drive through (apparently drive thru joints think everyone is dumb and NEEDS the warning printed for them). I thought that was the epitome of the 'we're not responsible for our choices' idea that seems to run rampant in our culture. We have to be told the contents are "HOT" when we ordered it and woulda screamed and shouted were it cold?! *kicking soapbox* I'll shush........and work on the cuppa french pressed that himself just delivered, bless his heart....
