Change is like walking through a new door, you never know what's on the other side.

I am such a dichotomy because I'm someone who prefers a schedule, or at least a basic outline of each day, week or month, so that I can be more organized. And I think that has to do with my Virgo rising (HA!) because Virgos are notorious for being organized. And yet, I’m someone who enjoys flying by the seat of my pants; staying open to things I didn’t prepare for because I will often discover wonderful adventures in not always adhering myself to a strict schedule.

And when it comes to change, it scares the shit out of me, yet I’m a person who loves change and will delve into my fears. I am both fearful and daring because I don't like being paralyzed by fear.

When I look back on my life and view all the various careers I’ve had, I see they were occupations that were not typically secure and forever changing (such as being an actor) which caused me to learn a lot about fear, change and uncertainty. As an actor, you never know what’s ahead because it fluctuates so much. However, I did it anyway because I loved it.

So I guess in a way, the careers I’ve chosen have all been stepping stones in preparing me for what is happening in the economic world today, being that there is no longer such a thing as "job and financial security." Employees are being let go left and right without any loyalty because companies are downsizing in fear of losing money. So, it's either you go or they go. You know, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if employment eventually turns into "on call" jobs, in which companies put you on a list and contact you only when they need you.

As you know, I just got a new part time job in addition to my other job. And I did this for two reasons. One being that I could see the handwriting on the wall for those of us in my position that are having our work hours greatly reduced, so I took this job as a backup, just in case. And the other reason is that I’ve been wanting a change in my line of work because I’ve stopped growing. And for me, whenever I feel as though I’m not growing it’s like a slow, painful death.

I can’t tell you enough how much I'm enjoying this new job because I feel rejuvenated and vital, by being able to tap into all my previous knowledge of this business and making use of it in one job.

But it hasn’t been without challenges or fears because going into a place that’s already established as a newbie, it’s been, well, new. I’ve had to learn new procedures, work with new coworkers, get a sense of ‘rhythm’ in how the place flows, and remain open to change. And not only have I had to adjust to the new place, they have also had to adjust to me being a newcomer.

Blessedly, the staff there has been extremely welcoming, kind and helpful, so it’s made this change a joyous one.

Also, the time spent in my personal life has changed because I’ve had my other job for over 9 years and have gotten use to a certain schedule. So having this new job has changed the time I spend blogging, the time I do my grocery shopping and laundry, the time I go to bed and wake up, and the time I spend in quiet. My whole schedule has been reconstructed.

But I have to say, it’s all been positive because this change has given me a kick in the ass, got my brain ticking again, got my creative juices flowing, and has given me a overall lift.

In addition, I have made it known to my manager that I would like grow within this company and have recently applied for a different position. I can’t exactly say what that position is right now because it’s still in the process, but I will definitely let you guys and gals know what happens.

Yes, this new gig has been very good for me. And I am sincerely grateful for it.

Because once again I am walking through some new doors; learning to stay open, remaining adaptable, and embracing change.

Thank you, life!

Have a super Monday, y'all!

  1. Good morning, Ron. First of all, good luck with the new venture. I hope it works out for you.

About change. It is always good to have change in our lives otherwise it could get a bit dull. But you should see me when I'm facing change, I have what I call collywobbles. Now, there are two definitions of collywobbles: intestinal cramps or intestinal disturbance, or a feeling of fear, apprehension, or nervousness. I get both, yet I adore challenges. I've had more in later life than I ever had as a young adult and they've wound me up, if you know what I mean.

Hoping you have a rewarding week x

  2. I'm so glad that you're happy with your new job and that everyone there has been so welcoming. From our conversation the other night, it sounds like the Universe has big plans for both of us!
    Have a great week! xoxo

  3. Wow! Fantastic news about more possibilities in your new job! That sounds very promising! It's easy to be complacent; I sure know that! I tend to find excuses to not do things all the time. I look forward to hearing more about your new job. Do you have to be discreet at your old job about all of this?

  4. Oh man Ronnie I got scared that this was a good bye to blogging letter! I need to catch my breathe...

Okay phew. Anyways so glad this new job is doing such great things for you! You deserve it! Sounds like you are off to a great start for the week :)

  5. Good morning Valerie!

    Thank you :)

And sound a lot like me!

" I get both, yet I adore challenges."

" I have what I call collywobbles. Now, there are two definitions of collywobbles: intestinal cramps or intestinal disturbance, or a feeling of fear, apprehension, or nervousness."

OMG, I love that....collywobbles! And the way you described it is exactly how I get when facing change, you said it perfectly. You should have seen me on opening nights in the theater, I used to get very quiet because I was so scared to even talk before going onstage. And yes, I had major intestinal disturbances too - HA!

" I've had more in later life than I ever had as a young adult and they've wound me up, if you know what I mean."

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. Yet, isn't it wonderful how these changes make us stronger and more daring when facing future changes?

Much thanks for stopping by, dear lady. Have a super week!

"It's easy to be complacent; I sure know that! I tend to find excuses to not do things all the time."

Yes, and I think many of us do the same thing, I know I do. But it gets to point where I need to give myself a push and be daring because when I stop growing, it feels worse than being afraid to make a move.

"I look forward to hearing more about your new job. Do you have to be discreet at your old job about all of this?"

No, in fact, my other boss knows of this new job because I told her. And in the type of work I do, many of us have additional jobs.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a super week!

Yes, this new gig has been good for me in many ways. I'm glad I decided to do it, and look forward to see where it takes me. I feel blessed.

  9. The best of luck to you, Ron! If anyone deserves it, it is you. I both love and hate change too. I am at a point right now where I know I should leave my job and seek out something new, but I know I'm great at what I do, and fear leaving.

I'm so glad things are going well for you!

  10. Ron, I'm so happy for you and how this new job seems to be something that you can not only grow with, but is also something you feel passionate about. I'm like you, if I stop growing I'm miserable. I need to be challenged in my work.

You're right about change, it can be very scary. But it change is necessary if we want to grow. And sometimes change is inevitable, so we might as well embrace it for the best.

Inspiring post, Ron. The best to you in this new position. Have a wonderful week x

" I both love and hate change too."

Isn't it something how many of us are like that? And I think because of my previous careers, they've taught me that nothing is ever static and can change in an instant. So I'm used to change happening. Yet, it still scares me.

" I am at a point right now where I know I should leave my job and seek out something new, but I know I'm great at what I do, and fear leaving."

I think you'll just intuitively know when to seek something new. This new part time came to me at the perfect time and I could just 'sense' that it was something I needed to try.

I fear change, too, even when I know the routine has turned into a rut and will soon become a grave if I don't do something about it! .The timing of this post couldn't be better for me, since I've been feeling really down lately--even for a Monday, it's bad!

And that's what happened when I decided to start applying for additional work back in January. Eventually, the right job just presented itself to me.

  19. "You know, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if employment eventually turns into "on call" jobs, in which companies put you on a list and contact you only when they need you." Ron, I have thought the same thing because it seems to be getting that way in many lines of work, so I wouldn't be surprised either.

Great news about applying for a different position! And I think it's impressive considering you really haven't been there that long, so they must think well of you.

Change scares the shit out of me too because it makes me vulnerable. But like you said, change can be rejuvenating. I remember a quote I once saw on a poster, "Change is the only constant in life."

    Great post, dude!

  20. Congrats and well wishes for the new application opportunity! Sometimes I think we over-analyze things which, for me at least, leads to paralysis by analysis….and that's when I start to feel a bit terrorized by a situation. Gotta work on that………………. But here's to walking through those new doors and embracing whatever change is on the other side.

  21. Look at us, traveling along the same wavelength in our posts today! (I, too, explored "fear" this morning!)

So you have Virgo Rising, huh? Well, my Sun Sign is Virgo, but I have Cancer Rising -- guess that means we'd probably get along! I certainly know and empathize with your desire for organization and a schedule, but I love how you're embracing change, trying to step out of that comfort zone. New things and changes can be scary, but they broaden us and help us grow.

Love your door pictures, too, especially the turquoise one.

    Happy Monday to you, dear!

Me too, Matt! More and more people are talking about this same thing when it comes to their work, either their hours are being reduced or they're being placed on call, when needed.

Yes, change makes me feel vulnerable as well. VERY vulnerable.

"I remember a quote I once saw on a poster, "Change is the only constant in life."

Yes, my sun sign is Libra, but I have a Virgo rising and my moon is in Aries. And it's funny because many people first guess me as a Virgo.

  25. Ron, congratulations on your 2nd job! Promotions sound promising! I love your idea of on-call employees! That would work great for our business as we really only have one to two weeks of demanding work.

  26. Thank you, Jean :) I'll be sure to let you ladies and gents know the outcome.

"I love your idea of on-call employees! That would work great for our business as we really only have one to two weeks of demanding work."

I honestly think more and more companies will start doing that. In one of my jobs (the older one) I don't work on call, but work independently. When I first started the job, I was given a set amount of hours that I could count on, however, those hours have been reduced over the past year, so I've had to look for other work to supplement my income. Personally, I wouldn't mind working on call as long as I had a sufficient amount of companies I could work for.

  27. I'm surprised I'm not a Virgo, because I am much like you: I prefer an organized schedule. I have really stepped out of my comfort zone recently, and I owe much of that to Tara. I am learning to be more spontaneous and less structured, and I have to admit, I like it. So maybe I'm just as much a dichotomy as you are, Ron, with my fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants mentality, too. I actually DO believe that change is good, and I've learned to welcome it...once I get used to it.

    That's AWESOME, Mark!

It's funny because in my day to day life, I prefer structure. However, if I take a trip somewhere like NYC or even on a vacation, I don't like structured tours and doing things at specific times, I prefer the freedom to just fly by the seat of my pants and explore on my own.

  29. The 'job' situation started to change back in the 80's, here in the UK. With the onset of computers, the work place started changing and jobs disappearing at an alarming rate. You had to be open to change, or you could easily find yourself out of work. It's good to welcome change in our lives, or we could easily stagnate. Good for you, Ron. I'm glad that you are happy with your new situation :)

  30. Great example, Babs! You're right, when computers started to make their way into the workplace, people had to embrace the change and learn how to use them, or else.

Change is scary because it moves us out of what we feel is comfortable. But I think it's good to feel uncomfortable because it stretches us to grow and develop.

  33. Talk about tapping into some of my life, my fear, my still raw emotions... As you know, I experienced a large shift in my work circumstances. I probably should have made the move, but my employer determined the need to make the dramatic change. I'm still struggling with the change. And I'm struggling with getting back into a routine.
I admire your choice to initiate the change. I might not feel the way I do had I initiated it. Good for you to take charge and honour that intuitive knowledge that something needed to change. I was too wrapped up in the external noise to listen....and as a rest someone else made a determination. Now I deal with the fear of that repeating.
Stay true to that intuitive knowing, it will serve you well.
    It already is.

  34. Hiya Mel,

I think because I've had so many careers that have never been typically secure, I've had to rely on my intuition to let me know what I need to do and when I need to do it. I've been seeing things changing for sometime in my line of work, so I decided to make a change as a backup plan. It was very scary and unsettling at first, because I've been in the same job for over 9 years and didn't want to lose that sense of routine and schedule that I've been so comfortable with for so long. But I needed to do it. Plus, I've stopped growing, so that in itself pushed me to do it even more. It was time for a change.

  50. I hope everything goes extremely well for you Ron! You deserve a rejuvenation!
I love doors! Whenever I am riding in a vehicle & come upon a building, it's the doors that interest me. Sometimes I try to figure out what is going on inside a particular door. I don't know why doors intrigue me, but I think they tell you so much about what happens in a particular building or home.

  51. Thank you, Benze :)

So far, I am REALLY enjoying this new job. It's been good for me because it's enabled me to make use of the various jobs I've had that encompass this whole business.
