Someone asked me on this post, after I mentioned something about having an afro when I was younger, if I really did have an afro.

And yes, I really did. Although, I had no idea that I could have an afro until I got my hair cut in a NYC salon.

Up until that point, I had been using a hot comb (remember those?) to straighten the waves in my hair because not only was it wavy, but also very FRIZZY. Yet, what I didn’t realize was that using a hot comb was actually making my hair frizzier. So yes, my hair may have been straighter-looking, but it looked like I had a headful of straight frizz instead of wavy frizz.

Anyway, when I moved to NYC in 1974, I had my hair cut by one of the stylists at the infamous Paul McGregor Hair Salon. And what was interesting is that instead of blow-drying my hair, he suggested that I sit under heat lamps and allow it to dry naturally because he could tell, just from cutting my hair, that if I did this I would have a killer afro – which back then was a very popular style that people were paying big bucks for by having their hair permed.

So, I did as he suggested and ended up loving it! From that point on, I never took a hot comb to my hair, I just let it dry as it was.

Here is a photograph that was taken of me back in the ‘70’s. It’s a photo I used as a headshot when I first started out as an actor. I was about 19-years old then.

Now before you look, I have to warn you that you might do one of two things: either laugh, or scream in horror. Or, you might even do both.

Are you ready?

Okay, here it is…

Alright, shut up, I can hear you all laughing and screaming right now.

But hey, I don’t blame you because I am too. And not so much about the hair, although it does look like an afro in the shape of a well-padded crash helmet, but more so about the whole picture in general and my POSE. Would you look at how WRINKLED my shirt collar was! And what on earth ever possessed me to put a wool sweater over the shirt is beyond me. I look like a college student in this photo who went to an Ivy League school in some godforsaken state that didn't sell clothing irons.

And please take note to my EYEBROWS. They appear as though they were drawn on using a black Sharpie marker.

Looking at this photo now, it’s no wonder I didn’t get many calls to audition for parts because the only role I would have ever been cast as would be for one of the Marx Brothers...

Either that, or a stand-in double for the role of Greg Brady in TV show, The Brady Bunch
Yes, I really did have an afro once.

Have a-fro of a Monday, y'all!

  1. Heehee I was going to say 'never mind the afro, what about those eyebrows' but you beat me to it. Are you sure they were real haha. Joking aside, I think you looked good with an afro. It was stylish at the time. I think we can all look back with a certain amount of disbelief when we see how we used to look.

    Have a great Monday x

  3. ha! i could not have imagined you with an afro at all, but wow, you look like you could have played greg brady or been greg brady years later. didn't realize how bushy his brows were until looking at the pics you posted.

oh and that poor dog. what a funny haircut.

  4. Ron, you are handsome no matter the hairstyle or clothes. OMG on your eyes! Beautiful!

I think we all wore the wool sweater over a collar shirt back then. Remember those Peter Pan collars? I thought I was so preppy wearing those with a pitiful skinny bow and my sweater! And as a woman who could never imagine needing an eyebrow pencil, I salute you! Bahahaha!

  5. Oh Ronnie I cannot stop giggling. How did you ever get your eyebrows that way?!? That is definitely different! I gotta say I like the hair on you! It looks good. I couldnt picture it but you certainly pull it off well :)

  6. Well I'm glad you mentioned the eyebrows - I didn't want to. And lordy you do look like that guy in The Brady Bunch...Back in the day we would not have called that an Afro - we had another name for it which I won't repeat here - not that it uses profanity or anything but we weren't all PC back then and I'm sure someone would feel offended.

  7. Ron, I started laughing just from your post title and dog photograph before I even read the post. You are one of the most funniest people I know. And I bet you were a wonderful actor!

I think you look cute in that photograph. Your eyes are beautiful, regardless of your brows. And you did look a lot of Greg Brady, especially the eyes.

Many years ago I tried a perm because my hair is so straight, but it was more of body wave and I really liked it. But the upkeep was getting expensive and I noticed that it was starting to dry my hair out. Now I just use a big curling iron when I want a different look.

Thank you for the giggles this morning, Ron. Have a wonderful week x

Afro or not, you are a handsome gentleman! I have to admit that before I even scrolled down, my first thought on your picture was Greg Brady! I always thought he was a cutie!

  9. Good morning Valerie!

"I was going to say 'never mind the afro, what about those eyebrows' but you beat me to it. Are you sure they were real haha."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Weren't they some BIG eyebrows? And yes, they were real. My father had the same brows, which we referred to as "a unibrow" because they grew in one complete line above our eyes. Several years after I got into acting, a photographer suggested that I tweeze my brows to groom them a bit, but also because they were creating a heavy shadow over my eyes. Ever since then, I've been tweezing them. But OMG, it's so time-consuming because I have to do it ever single day.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a fantabulous Monday and week!

It's so wild looking at photos of our younger selves. My Facebook friends have been bugging me to post a photo of myself with hair for Throwback Thursday, but I haven't done it yet. Once thing I like about my current hairdo is the easy maintenance.

Great post, buddy, and a fabulous photo. Shame on the "Brady Bunch" for not giving you the stand-in gig!

Can you believe those brows were REAL? I did nothing to get them that way, but I did plenty to un-get them that way. I have to use a tweezer and a comb with scissors to groom them to what they look like now. I swear to god, grooming my eyebrows has turned into a full-time job - HA!

  17. " It suited you, probably because it was your natural hair."

You're right, Babs. When I finally just allowed my hair to be the way that it was (naturally) it suited me more. And it was so much easier to take care of too, without having to use a hot comb on it everyday.

" I have to say that I've never seen eyebrows like yours and plenty of men would kill for them now. They seem to be drawing large eyebrows on nowdays."

Weren't those brows HUGE? And it's ironic you mentioned that because I too have noticed how some people are drawing their eyebrow on LARGE nowadays.

Much thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a lovely Monday and week!

Yes, that's the challenge of having perm - the maintenance. And also, the damage they create when done over a period of time. I used to suggest to my clients (when I was a hairstylist) to take a break from perming every once in a while to give their hair a rest.

Isn't it amusing to look back on the different periods of our life and see how we've changed? I have wavy hair but keep it cut very short because it's easier to take care of and just think I look better with shorter hair. I get my hair cut by barber and it's so cheap. I pay $15.00.

  23. Hiya Matt!

"Isn't it amusing to look back on the different periods of our life and see how we've changed?"

Yes, it sure is! I have pictures of me from way back before even this one and go, "OMG...was that really ME!?!"

" I have wavy hair but keep it cut very short because it's easier to take care of and just think I look better with shorter hair. I get my hair cut by barber and it's so cheap. I pay $15.00."

I know many guys who go to a barber for their haircuts and they look awesome! And yes, the price is way less than going to a cosmetologist. I cut my own hair because it's just easier than making an appointment. I use a clipper and scissors and cut it very short. I like myself in shorter hair as well. I cut my hair about every two weeks.

Thanks so much for stopping by, bud. Have a most excellent week!

What I said on that one was both my brothers had Afro perms in the 70's, as did most of the boys here in England, they were emulating Kevin Keegan and English footballer! I have to say your eyebrows do look at bit startling m'deario. LOL

  26. Ha! That's GREAT. My first thought was, Mike Brady meets Mr. Kotter. I will never understand why afros were all the rage back then, but I remember it well. Thankfully, my own hair was much too straight for that...although BRIEFLY in the 80s I might have taken to using a curling iron on it. Once or twice. For a few short weeks. Heaven knows why.

    Have a delicious week, Ron!

Omg, Ron, the critter catcher is what we used to call afros! It seemed so many I knew tried to have one in those days, men and women alike. Not everyone could pull it off, Ron. And do you realize how many young ladies were in love with Greg Brady? Btw, did you carry a pick in your back pants pocket? ;))
But seriously, Ron, such a beautiful snapshot which so reflects the times. Funny, because what I first noticed was your great smile with perfect pearly whites as I was scrolling up before even getting to your eyebrows. And your signature twinkle in your eyes! :))
I hope you had a wonderful 4th, Ron!

  29. OMG, Ron. No, wait. We call you Greg now, right? I cannot believe the resemblance. I know all about letting the curls relax and dry on their own, but I can't really leave the house with a wet head, now can I. So I break out the hair dryer and ruin everything because that's what I do. Or, like lately, I just get all lazy and pull it back into a pony tail. I do love your curls, I would have never pegged you as a curly top knowing you as I know you now. I shan't say a word about the eye brows. Nope. Not going there.

Hope you had a fantastic day, despite the heat and grossness, although I recall from a recent post of yours that you seem to have come to terms with summer. I'm not there yet.

HA! That's GREAT! And here I was trying to make my hair straight, while everyone else was trying to make theirs curly! I had my hair longer in the 80's, so it was still curly. However, by the end of the 80's, I began cutting my hair shorter, so the side's were straight, but the top was curly.

" I know all about letting the curls relax and dry on their own, but I can't really leave the house with a wet head, now can I."

I know I've told you this before, but I LOVE your curly hair. Curly/wavy hair is actually my favorite. It was also my favorite hair to cut when I was still a stylist.

"I would have never pegged you as a curly top knowing you as I know you now."

I know. Over the past 10 years, I've cut my hair shorter and shorter because of my receding hairline, so the curl is no longer visible. I think when that starts to happen to a man, shorter hair looks better because it balances out the face.

" I shan't say a word about the eye brows. Nope. Not going there."

    Bwhahahahahaha! One word.....STARTLING!

And speaking of the weather and the heat. I cannot believe how gorgeous it was over the weekend, but then suddenly, today, it went right back to how the heat was earlier last week. 37. You and Greg - separated at birth.

I could live with your "afro" because it actually looks like it was very soft. Your hair looked healthy. You were probably killing it with the iron! The eyebrows however would have to go. My fingers are just twitching to get at them with some wax and tweezers! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hey ho Robert!

"Ron, I can't get over how much you did look like Greg Brady, it's uncanny!"

HA! I know, is it not soooo UNCANNY? We would look like twins if my hair had been darker. But our curly hair and brows are almost identical. Even our faces were similarly shaped!

"It's amazing to see photos of you now, compared to back then. What happened to all those curls?"

Well, what happened was that as my hair started to recede on the sides, I began cutting my hair short because nothing looks worst to me than a man with a receding hairline and long hair everywhere else.- it just doesn't look balanced. So, the shorter I cut my hair, the more curliness was cut off. If I were to let my hair grow longer again, you would definitely still see the curl. But I've gotten so used to my hair being short that I really like that way.

Yup...you are so right about that. In many cases people wear better over time. It's like wine...we only get better tasting - HA!

"My hair is stick-straight and fine as corn silk. I shudder at how much product I'd need to pull something like that off."

When I was still doing hair, fine, straight hair (along with curly hair) was my favorite to work on. I enjoyed the challenge of learning how to cut and style fine hair, so that it had more body.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Happy Wednesday!

  55. Glad you found something you really like. Even though I am at home all day, I can never find the time to do a skin care regime. I have always been blessed with lovely, clear skin (got all my teenage acne on my bottom), so for me I never had a really good reason to get into a habit. From a very young age I read about the germs in face cloths, so I only ever use a face cloth one time before laundering or I enjoy the disposable wipes to clean my face. A little bit of moisturizer & I'm ready to go.

  56. The first thing I noticed in your pic was your eyebrows! OMG Ron! I have very fine hair, but I have a lot of it, so back when it was fashionable to get perms I would get one & my hair would triple in size. I would let it dry in the tight curls right out of the shower, then lightly pik it to give some volume. If I pikked too much my hair would be out past my shoulders!

That's GREAT, Benze! Sometimes doing less is more. And if you find a way that works well for your skin, then stick to it :)

Meeeeeee too! I'm also that way about using a bath towel to dry myself off. I change them often.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend! Have a great week!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I know, Benze, weren't they HUGE? Almost like a BILLBOARD.

"I have very fine hair, but I have a lot of it..."

That's the BEST kind of fine hair to have! You are so blessed!

" I would let it dry in the tight curls right out of the shower, then lightly pik it to give some volume. If I pikked too much my hair would be out past my shoulders!"

It was the same for me when I still had longer, curly hair. If I picked it too much it would look like BOZO THE CLOWN!

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're feeling much better and having a super week!

  61. First of all, I LOVE the new look of your blog! The header is fabulous! And thank you for still having my book posted. :-)

You looked adorable but your eyebrows are WILD! They're like Frieda Kahlo meets Brooke Shields. So funny that you have Greg Brady on here. I just saw him on Celebrity Wife Swap tonight and he's kind of a tool!

Hope you're surviving the storms. We had a few tornadoes west of me yesterday. xoxo

  62. OMG...Chrissy...it's sooooooooo GREAT seeing ya, girl!

And thank you. Glad you like the new look. I was finally able to find a template that I really liked, which would be clean and simple. I found this template on Pinterest and instantly fell in love with it. It came with with the header (the water colors), but I added my own text.

And you are so welcome, I'm going to leave your book on my blog for the rest of the summer!

"but your eyebrows are WILD! They're like Frieda Kahlo meets Brooke Shields."

Bwhhahahahahahaha! OMG, I have tears running down my face from laughing so hard at that. And you're absolutely right. I totally forgot about Frieda Kahlo's brows!

" I just saw him on Celebrity Wife Swap tonight and he's kind of a tool!"

Yes, I agree. He's still cute!

We didn't get the storms they anticipated here. Just a lot of wind and some rain. But 4th of July was gorgeous - breezy, cool, and sunny. It almost felt like fall weather.

You got a few tornadoes west of you?!? YIKES! You take care and be safe.

Thanks so much for stopping by and enjoy the rest of your week.

X to you and the gang!

  63. What's it say that I noticed the wrinkled collar before the eyebrows or the hair? Probably more proof that I don't do people well! LOL. Oh, the hair is close to what I lived with, growing up. I ironed my hair, paid to have it straightened at the salon, and then figured out I could let it air dry AND be fashionable AND save big bucks AND quit toiling forever!! Woohoo! And then I had chemo therapy, lost all my hair....and had it come back straight as a board. LOL. G-d has a funny sense of humour, huh?
But, I must say, since that experience, I've learned what a "bad hair day" REALLY is.
    Happy Hump Day!!

HA! Mel, it must be a "Libra thing" because that's what I noticed first too!!!!

"and then figured out I could let it air dry AND be fashionable AND save big bucks AND quit toiling forever!!"

    Yahoo! isn't that the BEST?

" And then I had chemo therapy, lost all my hair....and had it come back straight as a board. LOL. G-d has a funny sense of humour, huh?"

Yes, the same thing happened to my mother after she had chemo. Her hair grew back completely different.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Happy Hump Day to you too!
