It may be because today marks the first day of autumn, but I’ve been especially inspired to take photographs of images that seem fallish.

This time of the year things start to slow down, get quieter, and moodier-looking. And I like that.
I’m probably one of the only people on this planet who enjoys when the days get shorter and the nights longer because deep down inside I’m a creature of the night.

I savor this time of the year as we move into my favorite season of all. And already I can feel the shift. I can feel that tiny bit of cooler air moving in and the humidity lifting. I anticipate the day when I can wear turtlenecks and jackets and start eating cinnamon chip and pumpkin scones from Starbucks. And heartier comfort foods, like: warm soups, stews, chili, and breads. And let’s not forget about hot apple cider and darker, full-bodied red wines.

I have even seen pumpkins on sale in the grocery stores and it made me smile. Aren't pumpkins the cutest damn things? They always look so bright and happy. Whenever I see a pumpkin I want to hug and kiss it.

Oh, and one more thing, which I know will make most of you go, "OH...HOW GROSS!" I love candy corn. And not only do I love how it tastes, but candy corn holds such fond Halloween memories for me when I was a kid and went Trick-or-Treating. In fact, whenever I eat it I feel like a kid.

Over the past couple of weeks I took my camera and roamed around the city, capturing images that felt autumn-like. However, I did cheat a little and used a bit of editing to enhance the mood in some of these photographs.

Please enjoy…

#1- Light from within

#2 - Old chairs

#4 - Tavern

#5 - Window

Happy Autumn, folks!

Well, I really love all of your photos, but the one of the black cat is amazing! Love the stained glass window too. I wish I had places that close to me that I could photograph!! I have never lived in a city....always pretty rural living. Happy Monday to you, my friend...and let's enjoy our favorite season!! I had THE best cinnamon chip PANCAKES at Bob Evans Restaurant the other day. Talk about AWESOME!! xo Jeanne and the girlz

  2. I really, really, really love this set of photos. All of them. The cat one is a fantastic catch.

I love the night, but I prefer warm summer nights to winter ones. But there are some pleasures of fall and I do love breaking out my boots every year. I'm glad I live somewhere with four seasons.

About pumpkins. My older son brought me a big pumpkin he grew as a housewarming gift and it sits proudly on the island between the kitchen and dining room.

And I won't be one of the people saying gross to the candy corn. Isn't it a great taste? I was just eyeing a bag of them the other day and wondering if it was to soon to buy them.

  3. I think I'd like fall a lot more if it wasn't followed by winter. But I do love some of the foods you mentioned, along with squash, apple picking, and the smell of leaves.

Your pictures are great......love the one with the old chairs and number 5 with the box of pasta in the window is fabulous! I just made Cincinnati chili yesterday as a here-comes-fall dinner.

  4. I am no longer a creature of the night, tucked up in a warm bed is where I like to be... smiles. Yes, I'm a huge fan of autumn even though in that season things happened to me that shouldn't have. It's what I call a comfortable season.

Great, GREAT pictures, but then you knew I would like them. The one with the cat silhouette is brilliant and I particularly like the wrought iron gate and the rain drenched floor.

I got my camera out the other day and tried a few shots without using the auto setting!! What do you mean, not before time... grins. Happy Monday, have a great week x

  5. Ron, what beautiful photographs. You have such a gift for photography because you know the exact angle to shoot a picture. Your photos are always so interesting to look at because there is a lot to see in them. I love all these images, especially 1, 5 and 6. And the last one of the cat silhouette is amazing!

Autumn is my favorite season too and I miss it not living in the northeast anymore. The seasons and holidays here in Florida just don't feel the same. But I can live them vicariously through you.

Love the photograph of you as a vampire! How did you do that?

Have a wonderful first day of autumn and week, Ron x

  6. It's Count Ronnie of Transyl-Philly!

Fabulous photos, Ron, especially that last one with the cat. I swear that would make a fantastic Halloween card. I don't share your love of autumn or candy corn, but I enjoy your enthusiasm. And candy corn certainly does bring back a lot of memories.

You're such a skilled photographer, Ron. You really bring so much life to your photos. It's an amazing gift.

Great post, buddy! Enjoy your week and stop making out with the pumpkins!!

  7. These photographs are so impressive, Ron! I like each one for a different reason but they all depict the feeling of autumn. The one of the cat is amazing. The black silhouette against the yellow background is so cool. Is that one you edited?

"deep down inside I’m a creature of the night." That's me. I thrive at night.

And speaking of pumpkins, my girlfriend and I will be picking up one at our local market in October so that we can carve it as it gets closer to Halloween. And I'm with you on the candy corn. Once I start eating them, I can't stop.

    Happy autumn, dude!

  8. "Creature of the night?? That is ME!!! No wonder we get along so well!!"

Jeanne, I had a feeling you were a creature of the night as well because often when I publish a post at midnight, you're the first one to leave a comment a few minutes later :)

" I wish I had places that close to me that I could photograph!! I have never lived in a city....always pretty rural living."

Your photographs are awesome! And that's the great thing about blogging because we all share different photographs of where we live - some rural, some urban. We get to see different areas of the world.

" I had THE best cinnamon chip PANCAKES at Bob Evans Restaurant the other day. Talk about AWESOME!!"

    Sounds faaaaaabulous!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Happy Autumn!

X to you and the girlz!

  9. Thank you :) The one of the cat was caught totally unexpected. I was walking down a back alleyway and saw it sitting in the window. I took about 4 photographs, but liked this one the most.

"I love the night, but I prefer warm summer nights to winter ones. But there are some pleasures of fall and I do love breaking out my boots every year. I'm glad I live somewhere with four seasons."

Yes, I agree. I'm so glad I live somewhere with four seasons as well. Since moving back east, I've learned to appreciate and enjoy all fours seasons because they each have something wonderful about them.

"About pumpkins. My older son brought me a big pumpkin he grew as a housewarming gift and it sits proudly on the island between the kitchen and dining room."

    Yaaaaaaaay pumpkins!

"And I won't be one of the people saying gross to the candy corn. Isn't it a great taste? I was just eyeing a bag of them the other day and wondering if it was to soon to buy them."

You like candy corn too? We bought a big bag at work to snack on because one of the other managers loves it as well.

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Happy Autumn and have a super week!

Yes, I understand because I know many people who feel the same way. They like fall, but not what follows. And yes, isn't the smell of leaves heavenly? I like walking through them and hearing them crunch beneath my feet.

" and number 5 with the box of pasta in the window is fabulous!"

Thank you. And it's funny you mentioned the box of pasta because that's what first drew me to take the picture.

"I just made Cincinnati chili yesterday as a here-comes-fall dinner."

    Yummy! Bon appetit!

Happy First Day of Autumn, my friend. And thanks for stopping by!

"I am no longer a creature of the night, tucked up in a warm bed is where I like to be... smiles."

    HA!

" It's what I call a comfortable season." Yes, that's a perfect word...comfortable. Autumn is so cozy and comfy.

" I particularly like the wrought iron gate and the rain drenched floor."

Thank you. Philadelphia has a lot of little alleyways tucked between the row homes. I like peeking in them and seeing what's there.

"I got my camera out the other day and tried a few shots without using the auto setting!!"

*clapping* You GO, Valerie! I'm so proud of you!!!!

Happy Autumn, dear lady, and have lovely week!

"Autumn is my favorite season too and I miss it not living in the northeast anymore. The seasons and holidays here in Florida just don't feel the same. But I can live them vicariously through you."

Yes, that's one of main things I enjoy about living in northeast again, the change of seasons. In Florida, it just seems to be one long season of the same.

I made that vampire photograph over at Face In Hole. It was originally in color, but I edited it to black and white.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Happy Autumn and have a wonderful week!

Rob, you crack me up! That was hilarious!

Thank you. The one of the cat was so unexpected. I saw it sitting in a window and quickly took about 4 photographs.

"I don't share your love of autumn or candy corn, but I enjoy your enthusiasm. And candy corn certainly does bring back a lot of memories."

Yes, doesn't candy corn bring back a lot of childhood memories? Basically it's made of sugar and corn syrup. GREAT for the teeth - HA!

"Enjoy your week and stop making out with the pumpkins!!"

    Ha! Will do!

  15. Hiya Matt!

Thank you. And yes, that's one of the photographs I edited to bring out the silhouette of the cat. I also bumped up the colors.

"deep down inside I’m a creature of the night." That's me. I thrive at night."

I actually become more energized and creative at night, yet at the same time, more relaxed.

"And speaking of pumpkins, my girlfriend and I will be picking up one at our local market in October so that we can carve it as it gets closer to Halloween."

I usually buy several of those tiny pumpkins and place them around my apartment. They're so cute!

"And I'm with you on the candy corn. Once I start eating them, I can't stop."

Same here. They are sooooooo addictive!

Pumpkin pie is my favorite pie of all. And yes, those teeny ones are so damn cute. I usually buy a few and place them around my apartment for the holidays.

  17. Hey there you creature of the night, fantastic photographs! Love all of them. The cat one is brilliant. And I agree with Rob, it would make a fantastic Halloween card! And #5 - The window, is awesome! What an eye you have.

"Whenever I see a pumpkin I want to hug and kiss it. Lol. They are cute, aren't they?

I share your enthusiasm for fall and wish it would last longer. It seems that fall comes and goes so quickly, then it's on to winter which I'm not a fan of. Does it appear to you that spring and fall are not as predominate as they used to be? When I was younger, they seemed to be more definite.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hey ho Robert!

Thanks :) The cat one was a totally unexpected surprise. I was so hoping it wouldn't jump off the window and run away before I snapped my camera. But it just sat there and allowed me to take it's picture. Meow!

"Does it appear to you that spring and fall are not as predominate as they used to be? When I was younger, they seemed to be more definite."

Yes, I agree. Spring and fall are not nearly as definite as they once were. I can remember that by mid-October, all the trees had changed color and it was very cold. Now, the trees barely change color and it's not nearly as cold. Then it jumps right into winter. Spring is the same way. It happens so fast.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Happy Autumn and have a fantabulous week!

  19. I'm with you...candy corn rocks! Autumn is the best season ever; oh how I could feel it in the air this weekend. Love that first shot of you, and the other shots are great, too. I haven't gotten to get and and take pics lately....I can't miss the colors though as the leaves are just starting to change and drop here.

  20. LOVE the cat silhouette! It doesn't get much more Halloweenish than that.

"I’m probably one of the only people on this planet who enjoys when the days get shorter and the nights longer."

Well, count me in, too! But you probably already knew that. Also, hello, candy corn ROCKS! I'm the only one in my house who likes it, and I have no idea why. People who don't like it are missing out big time.

    Bring on fall!

"Well, count me in, too! But you probably already knew that."

HA! Yup, I knew you kinda felt the same way. I think you and I must be the only ones who like shorter days AND winter.

Don't you think Autumn is the most sensory season, Ron? I mean, yes, Spring with its burst of flowers and blooms, but Autumn in its glorious colors and delicious breezes of cooking squash. There is nothing like a bowl of pumpkin soup on a crisp night! And Halloween and Thanksgiving. My goodness, between the five of us trick or treating, there were bags of candy of all kinds one can imagine, including candy corn. Yum.
Am going to purchase Stanley Tucci's cookbook per your recommendation. The kind of food I adore this time of year along with lots of delicious soup!

  30. Hellooooo there Petra!

Thank you :) I couldn't resist sharing that vampire photo which I made over at Face In Hole. I always tell people that I think I was a vampire in a past life because I love night and all things GOTH - ha!

"The Tavern immediately brought me back to Scotland where pub hopping was the weekend activity."

Philadelphia is notorious for its pubs/taverns, and because of the old architecture, they all look very much like European pubs. Which I LOVE. The one pictured here (Tavern on Camac) is actually a gay pub/bar/restaurant. It's located on a small side street, not far from where I live.

" I mean, yes, Spring with its burst of flowers and blooms, but Autumn in its glorious colors and delicious breezes of cooking squash. There is nothing like a bowl of pumpkin soup on a crisp night! And Halloween and Thanksgiving."

I totally agree with you. I love Spring as well, but Autumn is my absolute favorite. And for all the reasons you mentioned.

"Am going to purchase Stanley Tucci's cookbook per your recommendation. The kind of food I adore this time of year along with lots of delicious soup!"

Please let me know what you think about his book after you read it. As I shared, I'm not a cook but the book looks really interesting, fun, and easy to follow recipes. Plus, he shares a lot about wine paring as well.

OK... now I'm gonna look at the pictures. "please hold"

I'm back and WOW. I started at the bottom and scrolled up and I tell you what. The cat one can't be topped... that is CRAZY AMAZING. SO SO AMAZING. It doesn't look real! It is stunning! How in the world did you get that!?

The others are all so beautiful. Your talent is never ending. You know I love love love your photos with peeled paint... anything old. But a lot of these are so shiny and new and lovely.... I am looking "out of my comfortable old box" at your photos and am loving all of them!

"THEY MAKE CHOCOLATE CHIP PUMPKIN SCONES!?!? WHAT!!!??!?! WHAT!?!?!??!?!" ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?" "

But NO, not CHOCOLATE CHIP PUMPKIN SCONES, they make a cinnamon chip AND pumpkin scones. Two separate ones. And they are to DIE for because they're the perfect taste for the Fall.

I got that shot of the cat while walking down a alleyway one night last week. It was just sitting there and I was so hoping it wouldn't jump of the window when it saw me taking pictures. I got about 4 shots, but this is the one I liked most. I edited it by making the silhouette appear more pronounced. Then I bumped up the colors.
