Are one of those people who eat three standard meals a day - breakfast, lunch and dinner – and you’re satisfied with that?

Or are you like me, someone who eats whenever they feel like it, by nibbling on food all throughout the day?

I'm a person who needs to consume small portions of food all day long to sustain my energy. But that’s not to say I don’t also eat a breakfast, lunch and dinner, because I do, yet they're not enough.

For a little guy, I can eat a lot of food. Often times while dining with someone, they will say, “Holy cow…where do you put all that food?”

And many people who I work with, will say, “Ron, anytime I look at you, you’re always chewing on something.”

Yes…I eat ALL. DAY. LONG.

And if I don't eat, I become a cantankerous grizzly bear with a bad case of painful hemorrhoids.

Here is a basic outline of how I eat in a day:
*note: I don’t eat these same things all the time because I like to change things up a bit

  1. Breakfast: a big bowl of granola cereal with a banana and a cup of French pressed coffee. Sometimes I’ll also have a cup of Greek yogurt with honey. I’m always hungry in the morning. Always.
  2. Mid-morning snack: hummus and pita crackers with some fruit (usually sliced apples or grapes), or sometimes I'll eat sliced cheese with crackers.
  3. Lunch: I will usually have a hearty bowl of white rice mixed with pinto beans and a salad, or if I’m at work, I’ll order a vegetarian burrito from Qdoba with an iced green tea.
  4. Afternoon snack: a small bag of pretzels or tortilla chips with bottled water.
  5. Dinner: a LARGE salad with two veggie burgers, or some kind of pasta dish with a salad.
  6. Evening snack: tortilla chips with hummus and black olives, or a sliced apple dipped in natural peanut butter.
  7. A glass of red wine.

And no, I’m not a fanatic who only eats healthy stuff because I love sweets – chocolate, cookies and pie. I also eat meat, but mainly chicken. However, I do enjoy a big FAT hamburger with French fries every once in a while. Additionally, I'm a "carb" lover – soft pretzels with mustard, bread, and pasta.

I eat everything, but in moderation. I don’t believe in denying myself anything I enjoy eating.

And I find that if I listen to my body, it will tell me exactly what I should eat, and how much.

Perhaps it’s because of my high metabolism that I need to consume food every couple of hours. And I've been this way my whole life.

I eat like a holy COW...

Have a bon appetit weekend everyone!
X

  1. I've read that it is better to eat small amounts throughout the day than three big meals. I eat very small amounts, but I also don't deny myself butter, steak, and pie on occasion. I love most of the foods you mention, esp. hummus , olives and Greek yogurt. Have you had the Chobani pumpkin? It's to die for!

One thing I never skip is my bedtime snack! Chai tea and a treat like cookies or granola. I can't make it to morning without something.

  2. Ron brace yourself for a shock ... I agree! ;)

Seriously, I eat all the time. I'm variable about it, though, because I've been known to skip breakfast when I'm in a hurry. But once I start eating, I eat all day long. I get hypoglycemic if I don't and pretty irritable. I keep things like nuts, cheese sticks, fruit leather, and granola bars at work and I eat every time I get a chance, in addition to more regular meals. I even keep emergency granola bars in my car! I also have a snack or two after dinner. And if I wake up in the middle of the night, I'll sometimes get a snack then, too. Mostly healthy foods but certainly not always. I have a sweet tooth and I also like chips and such. And of course, wine and beer. And in spite of the constant eating, I sometimes have to work to keep up a healthy weight. When I was a kid, I used to worry that maybe I had a tapeworm inside me. But now I think I just have a kick-ass metabolism.

  3. Ron, the way you eat is the healthiest, small meals distributed throughout the day. I should eat more like that. My appetite fluctuates, some days I'm ravenous and eat constantly, other days I'm not hungry at all. I don't usually eat breakfast, other than drinking a cup of coffee and "maybe" and a toasted English muffin with butter. I'll usually have a sandwich or salad for lunch with an iced tea, but then eat a pretty big dinner. They say that lunch should be the biggest meal of the day.

    Btw, I love Greek yogurt.

"I eat like a holy COW..." Lol. You are so funny! Cute picture.

Have a wonderful weekend, Ron x

  4. Ron, what is it about us little, skinny guys who eat a lot because I'm the same way? My girlfriend is always telling me that she's envious of my metabolism because I can eat and eat yet, never gain any weight. I have to fight to keep weight on. I'm like a bottomless pit.

I'm trying to be more health conscious lately because I tend to eat a lot of crap, and excessively.

"And if I don't eat, I become a cantankerous grizzly bear with a bad case of painful hemorrhoids." ROFLMAO

  5. I really SHOULD eat like you. When I eat I REALLY eat. However, I learned to eat less because it costs less. Kinda a silly thing to cut but it worked for me at the time. I really should eat little things like you do though because my metabolism is crazy!

  6. Good Afternoon, Ron. There's nothing like a little nibble, is there haha? I'm told that your style of eating is the right way. A little and often. Much healthier than overfilling three times a day. However, for those who tend to be overweight small frequent snacks become big ones and that's where the danger lies. My regime apparently is just right for my age but it's too boring for words. So carry on eating and enjoy. Excuse me while I grab a biscuit or maybe a French Fancy! Enjoy your weekend x

  7. I, too, must graze a bit. If I don't have something on my stomach I get nauseous and then a headache follows.

  8. My eating habits have changed a lot over the last year because of my COPD. I now eat much smaller meals but eat more often because getting too full can interfere with my breathing. I don't eat set meals except dinner which I usually eat with hubby. I usually need to be up for at least 2 hours before I can eat for the first time (probably has something to do with the horrid morning sickness I experienced with my daughter). At that time I will eat a bowl of Frosted Mini Wheats, a toasted bagel or a peanut butter & banana sandwich. I eat like a kid so shoot me! I drink 1 cup of caffeinated coffee when I first get up with a bit of Truvia (stevia) & a dash of milk & then drink nothing but decaf coffee for the rest of the day. About 3 - 4 p.m. I start experiencing low blood sugar so I will often have an apple or some grapes & if I don't have any fruit I'll drink a Dr. Pepper.

  9. I'm a grazer as well. Unfortunately I tend to graze on stuff that is less than healthy! It's good for metabolism to eat small meals throughout the day. Hey, any excuse to eat, right?!! :-)

  10. I'm down with most of what you'd eat, though I'd strike the word "veggie" from my list. I have to say though, you have inspired me with your white rice and pinto bean combo. That sounds like it would be right up my alley. I'd have to reheat it in the office microwave, but it sounds about a million times more interesting than a boring ol' sandwich. Thanks for the idea! And have yourself an amazing, grazing weekend.

  11. Because I live with someone I have to have dinner at a specific hour - I hate that. I eat when I am hungry and it's usually something easy. I hate to cook and I hate to even think about food...wasn't always this way - getting old makes me cranky.

  12. Oh, this was interesting to read Ron. I'm kind of a night person all around and even though it's not the best idea, I DO eat more, towards the end of the day and into the evening.

    A typical day for me:

1/2 bran muffin with light cream cheese and organic decaf for breakfast. Half my supplements for the day too: multi, vit c, milk thistle etc...

A handful of cashews or pumpkin seeds and a big glass of water, mid-morning.

Small sandwich on rye for lunch and another cup of decaf or spearmint tea.

Glass of wine or a beer before supper (not every day but most!) ;-)

A couple of good servings of what's for dinner, usually a slow cooker soup, stew, chili, pasta, sometimes veggie burgers and veggies roasted...you know how much I love to cook. I do splurge at supper. All vegetarian fare for me.

Bowl of cereal, organic cheesie snacks or popcorn with a fruit spritzer in the evening.

I eat a LOT but I am tall and that helps. I've always had a high metabolism too so don't tend to getting fat.

Anyhoo...I think overall that you eat very well and sensibly but I agree, we've all gotta splurge sometimes. For me, that's usually an organic brownie or organic coconut ice cream.

Have a fabulous weekend Ron, thanks for another very interesting post and wooohooo..more snow here, sending it down your way now!!! Take care out there if you've got icy streets. Those can be treacherous when the first snow arrives!

  13. Me: Breakfast- Large mug of coffee, 1/2 English muffin with all-natural peanut butter and organic blueberry preserves. Mid-morning (sometimes), a bowl of bran flakes with fresh fruit; Lunch: 1/2 tuna sandwich on whole grain bread and a whole orange; mid-afternoon (sometimes) Fage low fat plain yogurt with fruit or a glass/cut of green tea; Cocktail hour: a glass of wine and celery or red bell pepper with hummus or 5 crackers with gouda or Cotswald cheese. Dinner: More wine, grilled chicken breast and steamed broccoli or steamed string beans w/almonds OR turkey meatballs from Trader Joe's with veggies and for dessert two squares of dark (72%) chocolate and... more wine. :)

  14. Hey, Ron, what moooving post. It sounds like you found the perfect way to nourish yourself. The frequent small portions approach to eating is a good idea. You keep your energy levels up and you--hopefully--don't feel hungry,

"I eat everything, but in moderation. I don't believe in denying myself anything I enjoy eating."

Great plan! You're not stuffing yourself with crap, but you're not a granola head eating bark and weeds either. Food is meant to be enjoyed!

    Have a delicious weekend, buddy!

  15. Ron, it sounds to me that you know your body well enough to sense what it needs and how much to eat and you honor that, which I think is awesome!

Because I'm a night person, I have a tendency to eat more food later in the day, up until I go to bed. I honestly don't feel hungry during the day. Like you, I eat most anything I want. I get bored eating the same things all the time, so I like diversity. Sometimes I'll feel like eating a lot of salads and veggies, other times I'll eat meat or seafood.

I love sweets too. Chocolate candy is my all time weakness.

" I eat very small amounts, but I also don't deny myself butter, steak, and pie on occasion."

We sound the same! Except, sometimes I can sit down at diner (especially if I'm dining out) and eat HUGE portions of food. I eat that way a lot if it's a buffet-type restaurant where you can go back and get more. OMG...can I eat!

"Have you had the Chobani pumpkin? It's to die for!"

No, but I will have to Google that and see what it is because you have me VERY curious now. I LOVE anything PUMPKIN!

"One thing I never skip is my bedtime snack! Chai tea and a treat like cookies or granola. I can't make it to morning without something."

Meeeeeeeee too! Which is why I don't brush my teeth until I'm ready to go to sleep because I will eat up until I get into bed, I kind you not.

" I keep things like nuts, cheese sticks, fruit leather, and granola bars at work and I eat every time I get a chance, in addition to more regular meals. I even keep emergency granola bars in my car!"

I have granola bars in my locker at work, just in case I get hungry and need a snack. And when I had a car and drove, I kept them in my car as well!

"And in spite of the constant eating, I sometimes have to work to keep up a healthy weight. When I was a kid, I used to worry that maybe I had a tapeworm inside me. But now I think I just have a kick-ass metabolism."

    "Btw, I love Greek yogurt."

"I can make a meal from a big salad or fruit."

I can do the same thing, especially during the warmer summer months when I like to eat lighter foods that are "watery."

I'm not a big meat eater (such as a steak) because it feels too heavy. However, i love a burger now and then. No, I don't eat pork either. I don't care for how salty it tastes - especially ham.

Absolutely adoreable. And have I mentioned how I have this rather dysfunctional relationship with food? LOL. I don't like it and it pretty much doesn't like me either.
*sigh* Gotta love a gluten free diet. Not sure WHY ya gotta love it though.
I mean, what's TO love about it?!
Eating is a functional thing for me. Gotta eat to live. And I live with himself who just lives to eat. LOL. I mean, the man watches the food channel and makes "those"noises....I quit checking to make sure it's not some type of erotica and offered to buy him a bib, THAT'S how "into" food he gets.
I'm one who can get through the day and suddenly realize I've had a few grapes....maybe? So having structured times for meals is sorta required for me. And it's helpful for himself to have it that way since that gluten free deal kicked in.
I do envy people with active metabolism, ya know, the thin ones who didn't have to work to have that. I'm clear there's a downside to that....but boy woulda sold my soul to have that once upon a time!!

  36. Hey Ron, You are a human food vacuum all that food you should be around 527 lbs. I just look at a picture of a green bean and I put on 49 lbs. I too love to eat and eating is what I have done in the past. Before the hip replacment (s) yes I had to have it done two times, first one had a hematoma and burst open at the incission. Then my bladder was going crazy had to have a catheter in for about 7 months. Was in and out of the hospital so many times that I had a line of hospital johnnys designed just for me. But I did manage to loose 138 lbs, and I am on the recovery road. I missed being on the blog scene and connecting with my Philly Friend. Today was the day and here I am. I also lost my job and now I am hunting for a new job. But I love all the challenges that I was given and it helped me grow and let love enter in. I now have a sense of calmness about me that has developed into a self liking. The 11 glasses of Red Wine I had for breakfast helped also,
Ron I saw your post and I laughed and I felt good. I know a lot of people who are like you that can have a meal of about 5 lbs and a shit of 11 lbs. You are the metabolic heroes in this world. I on the other hand have been full of shit for so long that it takes its toll.

  46. Too much hummus for me!
I also eat whatever I want, but I do it differently. I eat very little during the morning and daytime and do the majority of my eating from about 8 PM until midnight. I know it's kind of odd, but it seems to work for me.

Hey, if that works for you I think it's great! We all have different ways of eating. I eat late at night too. I know you're not supposed to, but I'm always hungry at night.
