Post updates by email:

I noticed this past Christmas that the men’s grooming area of our store was very popular in gift-giving. And it didn’t actually dawn on me how popular it was until about a week before Christmas, when many of our customers (both men and women) were frantically shopping for these beard kits, which we eventually ran out of.

Yes, it seems that beards are the rage right now. But not just beards, particularly those long and bushy Grizzly Adams beards, which personally, I’m not fond of. I like a beard to be tailored and trimmed. I don't want a beard to look as though it's got rodents living in it.

Anyway, with the sudden popularity of beards, I feel as though I'm being a copycat in having one myself. When, in fact, I've had one for years and years.

For most of my adult life, I’ve had some kind of facial hair. Whether it was a moustache, a goatee, or a beard, like I presently have. I prefer myself with facial hair because I think it balances my long, narrow face and features.

Plus, I think facial hair is sexy. I’m usually attracted to men who have either a perpetually visible 5 o’clock shadow, or a moustache or beard.

Women can do a lot more than a man when it comes to making changes with their hair or using makeup, so experimenting with facial hair is a way that men can change or enhance their appearance. Beards can do a lot for a face.

However, I do know that many people don't care for facial hair on men, but prefer a smooth, shaved look.

Here are three photo collages I created, showing the kinds of beards I like...

Oh, and here's my VERY favorite...

I give him an A+ for creativity and his use of moustache wax. And is it just me, or are you also wondering how he sleeps at night without poking himself in the face?

Have a delightful weekend everyone!

  1. I like a goatee or five o'clock shadow look because it's sexy, but I can't handle it in the bedroom.......hahaha.....I'm being serious! I have very sensitive skin!

But holy crap, I hate that bushy look! Nasty! I think that dumb Duck Dynasty show made it popular. Unless ZZ Topp has made a comeback that I'm unaware of.

    Happy Friday!

  2. Ron, I Lol at that last photograph, as well as the first. How funny! I'm with you, I am attracted to guys with facial hair too, as long as it's kept clean, neat and trimmed. I think beards are super sexy. And it's evident in the ones you've chosen for your collages. Who are those two guys in the second collage? Hot!

Fun post! Have a wonderful weekend, Ron x

  3. Ron, my husband has had both a clean shaven face and either a moustache or beard. And I have to say that I prefer him with some kind of facial hair because even at his age, he's got such a baby face and the beard gives him more of a distinguished look, like the gentleman in the second collage on the left. His only complaint is that having facial hair takes more time to groom than not having it.

Great selection of beard photos. Loved that last one. You have such a great sense of humor.

  4. Ron, I wish I could grow a beard because I think they're really cool. But I'm one of those guys who only needs to shave every couple of days because I don't grow a lot of hair on my face. And what I do grow, it's thin and patchy. I'm hoping as I get a bit older my beard comes in fuller because I would like to grow one. A lot of my guy friends say I'm lucky that I don't have to shave much because they can't stand it.

    Hilarious last photo!

    Entertaining post as usual, dude!

  5. This is hilarious timing Ron! Just yesterday I posted an article from Buzzfeed on Facebook about the things all people know when dating a man with a beard. My boyfriend is sporting some new facial hair for the colder weather and it is so funny to see it is "trending". I think he did it just to warm his face, and cause he is lazy in the winter months.

If you grow a beard like the last picture I want a picture posted! I think that would be hilarious? Maybe a little Face in Hole action for Ronnie with different beards?

  6. Beards are really popular these day. Both of my sons have recently grown them...I think they look great, makes them more mature looking. The hubby grew one years ago...while I liked how it looked I didn't like the feel of it. I loved his mustache, but now without it I think he looks better without facial hair.

  7. I like a beard to be tailored and trimmed. I don't want a beard to look as though it's got rodents living in it. Oh em geeeeee! I so agree. It does seem like there are a lot of Duck Dynasty wanna be's running around now. Not attractive. At. All. Unless you live in the Great White North, I see no useful purpose. Getting down from my soapbox now........

  8. Hey, Ron, this post is weird with a beard! Just kidding! Love the photos. I had a beard when I was younger and I agree that they look better when they're trim and neat.

It was too much of a hassle to take care of mine, so I got rid of it. I've had goatees and mustaches, but since I've shaved my head, I'm really down on facial hair. Hell, some mornings I'm tempted to shave my eyebrows!

I'm not surprised that the latest beard craze is over the top (over the lip?). We live in an age of excess. Let's hope we don't all end up looking like the last gentleman in your post, It could be very dangerous.

    Have a great weekend, buddy!

  9. Ron, the guy with the rodent on his face is hilarious!! That said, I'm becoming quite used to seeing men with some facial hair. Back in my late dad's day, men typically were smooth-shaven and seemed to see beards, etc. as marks of poor and homeless men.

Not so today. Why, even Domer now and then sports the "scruffy look," and it's most becoming! It's easier and consumes less time on those frigid mornings, too.

As for the guy in the pink suit, frankly, he looks like he just might have too much time on his hands, ha!

Have a splendid weekend, my friend!

  10. Such an individual personal preference (is that redundant?) I dislike facial hair and hair in general LOL Many men grow beards and mustaches when they are young to look older and then they forget to shave it all off when they get older. It's amazing how much younger a man will look without all the hair! (And ladies - get your eyebrows done professionally - instant face lift!)

  11. I have always been a fan of beards & mustaches on men, but not the couple days growth which seems to be so popular now. To me, it looks scruffy until it's a proper beard. My favorite beard is the 2nd to last because when it hits this stage it's soft on my overly sensitive & kissable face!

  12. BTW Ron, I used my other email address to reply to all your other posts & haven't seen anything - did you get my replies? These are replies from my benzeknees email address.

  13. I like facial hair on a man. My dad always had a chin beard. He often trimmed it into slightly different shapes and even grew his sideburns slightly bushy once. Maybe that's why I like beards, as long as they are nicely trimmed and not a trap for food. I hate long, bushy beards.

  14. Portland has been at the forefront of the beard craze. Seems like everybody here has facial hair of some sort. In fact, the World Beard & Moustache Championship was held here last year - check it out if you're interested. I like beards, too - just haven't yet worked up the nerve to grow one myself. Have a great weekend, Ron! http://www.worldbeardchampionships.com/2014-2/

  15. Ron, this is hilarious! The picture of the guy with the rodent on his face is genus. I wonder how they did that?

I agree, I like facial hair on a man. Sexy. Those are some great shots! Years ago I had a goatee but have never tried a full beard.

"And is it just me, or are you also wondering how he sleeps at night without poking himself in the face?" Lol. He probably sleeps on his back!

    Great post!

  16. Hello there Valerie!

"I quite like facial hair on a man but, like you, I can't stand those that look as if they're growing a new type of fungus. Mind you, it's given me an idea for getting rid of those destructive squirrels.....whaaaaaa."

    Bwhahahahahahaha! OMG...that made me HOWL!

"They make a man look distinguished and I like that.... a lot. But more than that, they look more romantic ... and I like that, too. Sigh!"

Yes, that's the perfect word...ROMANTIC! And they sorta make a man look as though he's from another era.

"The man in the last picture has to be very, very brave, methinks."

HA! Yes, can you believe not only his beard, but his whole outfit? His hat looks like a lampshade!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have grrrrreat weekend!

I agree, a beard can make a man look very distinguished, especially if he's got a baby face. Beards can so amazing things for a face.

"His only complaint is that having facial hair takes more time to groom than not having it."

Same here! It takes A LOT of time for me to have beard. Not only do I have to shave around it, but I also have to use a clipper to keep it short cropped.

OMG, and I have the opposite issue. My beard is so thick and fast-growing that I could literally shave TWICE a day. I usually won't shave on my days off to give my skin a break.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy! Have a most excellent weekend!

Yes, beards do seem to be VERY popular lately, don't they? I've been noticing more and more men on the streets sporting them!

"The hubby grew one years ago...while I liked how it looked I didn't like the feel of it."

Yes, they can feel rather rough.

"I loved his mustache, but now without it I think he looks better without facial hair."

Isn't it something how facial hair makes such difference in how a man looks?

I have to agree with you because having a beard DOES take a lot of time and effort to keep it looking trimmed and neat. It's so much easier to just completely shave your face in the mornings. My beard takes so much effort.

"Let's hope we don't all end up looking like the last gentleman in your post, It could be very dangerous."

"Back in my late dad's day, men typically were smooth-shaven and seemed to see beards, etc. as marks of poor and homeless men."

Yup, it was the same back in my father's day as well. I used to remember watching my dad shave every morning in the mirror and I couldn't wait until I had to shave my own face.

" Why, even Domer now and then sports the "scruffy look," and it's most becoming!"

I agree, there is something becoming about the scruffy look. It looks rugged.

"As for the guy in the pink suit, frankly, he looks like he just might have too much time on his hands, ha!"

" Many men grow beards and mustaches when they are young to look older and then they forget to shave it all off when they get older. It's amazing how much younger a man will look without all the hair!"

Yes, and it blows me away how much facial hair ages a man. But then again, I've always been more attracted to age than youth (even when I was younger), so I prefer an older-looking man. I think it's sexy.

  28. Shaved head.....shaved face. That's how I like he-who-lets-me-buzz-his-head. But he's ancient and shouldn't be donning that 'ain't quite grown up' beard look (though, omg if we were 20 years younger....). I call him "scruffy" in the mornings and I'm off limits til he makes his face 'right' again.
He'd look like some vagrant if he had a long one.....and the way he manages to drop food on to his shirt---eww it'd be in hair and that would be sick and wrong.
He's got too coarse of facial hair to pull it off....any of it.
And he's got incentive to keep it zackly as is. :-/

Now, I think your look is excellent for you.
And those gents you chose as fine examples are FINE examples...holy mama are the FINE examples! LOLOL. BUT.... As trendy as beards might be, I'm liking himelf exactly as he is. Clean shaven, bald....and mine. Ain't I lucky!!

Bwhahahahaha! Mel, that CRACKED ME UP! I take it you don't care for facial hair on Himself? That's okay because many women feel that way :)

And I too like either a bald look or short hair on a man. SEXY!

Aw...thank you. I like having a beard, although I will say it's a pain in arse to keep groomed.

  32. Okay, I'll grant you that all the guys in the collage are cute. Bit not the one at the end. That's just creepy.

Myself, I like the way some beards look, but am not keen on how they feel. It's more pleasant to kiss a man who is clean shaven. (Although I also like the sandpapery feel of a face the next morning). But... I don't like the weird beard thing that is popular lately. Particularly ones involving wax. Igh. It just looks dirty to me.

Yes, Petra, it must take him HOURS to get that beard to look like that. I think it would be easier if he could just put it on and take it off like a mask!

"do I adore men with a 5 o'clock shadow ala Javier Bardem. mmmmm. But, Ron, why 5:00 as opposed to 6:00 or 7:00? Is there that much difference?

My former mother in law could have used some good wax. She was always at war with her mustache. I advised her to just let it grow, because I thought she would look gorgeous with a Fu-Manchu. I don't know if she had anything to do with it, but I was divorced shortly afterwards...
