Post updates by email:

I am no wine expert. Nor do I judge the price of a bottle as to how good it may or may not be. I’ve tasted expensive wines that I didn’t care for, and wines with tags as little as $7.99 which I thought were amazing. I don’t believe that price makes a wine good or bad. I think it's all relative to the drinkers individual palate.

However, I personally have certain things that are no-no's when it comes to drinking wine.

First, allow me to share that I primarily enjoy wine because of the ritual. I enjoy selecting a wine; pouring a glass; smelling it; then taking my first sip. I don’t think I’m a wine snob, but there is an immense pleasure I receive from the ceremony; savoring it. I don’t just drink wine for the buzz. Although I will admit, the buzz is quite nice.

My No-No’s

  • I won’t drink wine from a BOX. I apologize if any of you are boxed wine drinkers and enjoy it, but the one and only time I had a glass of wine from a box, it tasted like a rubber GARDEN HOSE. Perhaps it was psychological, but the whole idea of pouring wine from a cardboard box with a plastic bladder and nozzle makes me feel like I’m at a freakin' frat party in the movie, “ANIMAL HOUSE.”
Nope, no boxed wine for me.

  • I won’t purchase wine with a twist-off cap. I want a wine bottle with a cork in it. Again, perhaps it’s psychological, but it feels sacrilegious to twist off a cap from something so sacred as wine. I enjoy removing the seal and cork from a bottle by using a corkscrew. Amen.
  • I like to drink wine from a glass with a stem. I can’t drink it from a juice or water glass, or god forbid...a paper Dixie Cup. I need the stem because I like holding a glass of wine that way.

Wait a minute. On second thought, I do sound like a wine snob, don’t I?

Oh well…I guess I am.

Anyway. I wanted to share some things I found online pertaining to all things wine.

Please enjoy...

This is the type of corkscrew I use. I believe it's called "a waiter's corkscrew."

My favorite style of glass to drink wine.

Below are some other glasses I found interesting...

Festive!

GORGEOUS!

HA! Perfect for drinking wine at a sporting event. And at least they have a stem.

Here are some wine bottles cleverly used as light fixtures...

How fierce are these?

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!

I could so see these lights in a wine bar!

Here are some great ways to make use of wine corks...

Wine Cork Wreath

Wine Cork Candle Holder

And imagine sitting in this while sipping a glass of vino!

I leave you with some wine humor...

Have a winetastic weekend everyone!

I don't like boxed wine either. I much prefer a red wine - and a bottle with cork - but these days it's hard to find corked wines. I dogsat for a friend and she gave us two very decent red wines (with screw tops).

  2. Yeah, nobody likes to go to a restaurant, order a bottle of wine, and then have the waiter return just to unscrew it! However, there is a science behind the screw top use (prevents oxygen from entering and also prevents the musty cork issue) so I'm learning to live with its increased use by more and more wineries.

I don't mind the new wine tumblers for reds, as your hand can slightly warm it up and bring out more aroma. But definitely need the stems for white!

I can be very picky about my wines and I always ask what brand the house wine is before ordering it at happy hour!!! I've visited at least 50 wineries in the last decade, so I'm probably a bit of a snob myself.

  3. Haha this was such a fun post! I will admit that wine is not my strong suit. I am more of a beer girl. But Shark Tank does having me eyeing one boxed wine. I wonder if it is still something that you wouldnt like? Here it is:

I think it is all the colors that has me interested. Plus the sharks said they taste amazing and the Sharks really give harsh truth so...I dunno could this be the exception to your boxed wine rule?

  4. I do like corked wine bottles and have a selection of openers, one gadget so complicated it defies the human brain. There's no need to worry though since corked bottles seem to have gone out of fashion. It was interesting to read the comment by Bijoux about the theory behind screw tops. As for boxed wines, I wouldn't touch one with a barge-pole. I was given a box of wine once and hated it. The contents didn't even taste like wine.

I'm thinking of changing to red wine, which I don't like.... people tell me it's better for me than white. I wonder if I will ever get used to it.

  5. Those all sound perfectly reasonable! Sign up to the wine snob list, please! Cork, check! No box, check! And if you can add, it has to be Malbec. Thankyouverymuch. Oh, and I don't mind the glass so much. I've been known to drink from a tumbler. Ooops! Happy Weekend, Ron!

  6. Hey, buddy, you really uncorked a great post!

I, too, will not drink wine from a carton and I truly prefer drinking my wine with a glass with a stem.

Of course, I'll drink it clean out of the bottle if I have to, but I'd rather get my buzz in a more refined manner. Love those photos, particularly all those cork shots! That cork chair was incredible. If I sat in that thing, I don't think I'd ever get out!

    Have bubbly weekend, buddy!

  7. I refuse box wine as well. Like you, I never bought wine with a screw top; that is until my favorite gourmet wine store explained it to me. Screw tops are for wine that has reached perfection and does not want to continue aging; even knowing that I'm still funny about screw top bottles...I have to test it at a tasting first, ha! By the way, I have no problem admitting to being somewhat of a wine snob...I say somewhat because I do like GOOD wine though I don't think the price tag always determines the quality.

  9. Ron, your thoughts about wine are just like mine. Lol. I cannot drink wine from a BOX. Although, I have a GF who loves it because it's cheaper and can get more for the money. Whenever I go to her apartment for dinner, I bring my own bottle of wine because I refuse to drink hers. I feel the same way about a twist off cap, I want a cork. I save all my corks and place them in a big glass bowl. I love the idea of making them into a cork wreath!

Beautiful selection of wine glasses you shared. The second ones are Gorgeous! I like a glass with a stem as well. Drinking wine is all about the presentation. And I love those wine bottles made into wall lights.

    Hilarious cartoon!

    Have a winetastic weekend, Ronx

  11. Ron, you sound a lot like my husband when it comes to wine. I definitely think he's a snob, but then again he's also Italian. He's also very particular about his food.I could never see him (or me) drinking boxed wine. I would just rather not drink it. I've drank wines with a screw-top before and was surprised by how good it was.

Love the cartoon. It made me LOL!

Have a great weekend, Ron. It's supposed to warm up a bit.

I have had great tasting wine from a twist-off cap bottle.

Yes, that's what I've heard from many people. And I've seen wine bottles in the store that looked like very interesting wines, but wouldn't purchase them because of the screw-off cap - HA! I wonder if someone poured me a glass from a screw-off cap and I didn't know it, couldn't even tell the difference?!?

"I don't mind the new wine tumblers for reds, as your hand can slightly warm it up and bring out more aroma. But definitely need the stems for white!"

Yes, and as you know, I only drink red wine. I will sometimes even hold the glass by the base to warm it up if it's been kept in my fridge. But once it's warmed though, I like to hold it from the stem.

"I've visited at least 50 wineries in the last decade..."

I LOVED your posts on your blog about the different wineries you and your husband visited. Can't you believe for as much as I love wine, I've never been to winery!?!

"There's no need to worry though since corked bottles seem to have gone out of fashion. It was interesting to read the comment by Bijoux about the theory behind screw tops."

YES! I thought it was extremely interesting because I had never heard that.

As you know, I only drink red wine. I tried white before but it makes me extremely tipsy very fast. I wonder if it's the sugar?

  21. Hey Ron! I know what I'm about to say will make wine connoisseurs shudder, but when I drink wine, I like it cold and in a glass full of ice. Almost always white.

I REALLY like the lamps made from wine bottles, the middle one (with flames) are awesome. The glasses that I really don't like are "standard" wine glasses, that come without a stem.

Isn' the wreath cool? I used keep my wine corks in a glass bowl as well. Then one day I just threw them out. But I should have saved them to make a wreath. I also like the cork candle holders.

"Drinking wine is all about the presentation."

I agree! The ritual and presentation. That's what makes wine so special.

  25. Ooh, Ron, I have a very rare disagreement with you. First, although I vastly prefer corked wines, there are apparently compelling reasons to use twist off caps on some. (http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2014/01/02/259128689/cork-versus-screw-cap-dont-judge-a-wine-by-how-its-sealed) I noticed in Tasmania it was almost impossible to find wines withOUT caps. I have a waiter's corkscrew also, and it's the only kind I like to use. While nothing beats that moment when you pull the cork out, I wouldn't turn down good wine just because it has a twist-off cap. Also, I have some stemless wineglasses I love - they are engraved with the logo of a winery that shares my family's name. But I'd sure take those glasses with the trees on them - they're gorgeous. All those wine bottle lihts are beautiful, too.

" I have had great tasting wine from a twist-off cap bottle."

OMG, Pat, I used to work an Italian girl from South Philly who drinks her wine the same way. She likes it cold and uses ICE during the hot summer months.

Oh well, that's the thing about wine that's really cool, everyone has different tastes and enjoys drinking it in their own way. I've drank cold red wine myself, not iced, but right out of the fridge.

"the middle one (with flames) are awesome."

Both you and Bijoux share almost the same article link on twist-off caps versus corks. I should probably try one someday, just for the hell of it. Like I shared, I think with me it's psychological

"I have a waiter's corkscrew also, and it's the only kind I like to use. While nothing beats that moment when you pull the cork out..."

You said it! I used to work for Williams-Sonoma and they sold these fancy corkscrews of $125.00!!! However, I like a simpler corkscrew.

I with you, I will NOT drink wine from a box. At all. I have had wines with a twist-off cap and really enjoyed them. Like you through, I was hesitant to try it because I though it would make a difference in the way the wine tasted. But it didn't, it tasted like corked wine!

  32. Wines from Spain, especially reds, are usually very good and super cheap. My latest everyday fave is Terrenal Cab. $3.99 at Trader Joe's. Current everyday fave white is a Sauvignon Blanc from Chili. Wish I could recall the name. But also $3.99 from TJs. Fave Viognier that you won't find outside Santa Barbara County is Calzada Ridge. Grown on one acre, they only produce about 50 cases a year @$22/bottle and are neighbors and friends. I live on a ranch where the owner has Highland Oak Vineyard and produces the loveliest Syrah/Grenache blend ever. About 150 cases a year at about $25 a bottle, but you're also unlikely to find it out of the area. Love the cork chair. :)

Oh Jayne, I WISH the Trader Joe's here in Philly sold wine because those prices are AMAZING! But alas, PA only sells alcohol in wine and spirits stores. When I lived in Florida, you could purchase wine ANYWHERE - grocery stores, drug stores; even convenient stores.

Enjoy the adventure and the ritual! I have the two-armed corkscrew as I've nearly dropped a couple of bottles with the "waiter's?" corkscrew or couldn't get the cork out or got blisters. Lol. But remember the scene in the Godfather where Michael meets Sollozzo at the Italian restaurant in Brooklyn? Have noted in the past the waiter using the corkscrew.
Fabulous crystal! And amazing lighting fixtures. I could see one of them in my office. And that cork chair is to die for! All it needs is a massage thingy! :)) When I think of it, I could probably have made an entire dining room set! ;))

  40. I'm not much of a wine drinker, Ron, but your style and ceremony are definitely things I can appreciate!

Drinking wine from a cardboard box sounds gross (sorry, but that's my opinion!). And using a Dixie cup or a fruit juice glass is equally tacky. If one is going to drink, one should do so with CLASS, don't you think??

Hope your weekend was spectacular, dear!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh wow... I WANT those "festive" glasses... WOW!!!! Gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love wine... love red... white... but my FAVORITE is white wine that tastes super oakey from the barrel. The more oak the better... it is hard to find!

I have definitely used a box... Price Club had those along time ago. I would buy one and we started calling it, "The Happy Box." I haven't had one in ages!

From what I understand, the wine with the caps can be better, right? Mom read some article about that. But I love a good wine with a good cork. I used to use the kind of opener that has the prong on either side. BUT... it broke and I just got an old fashioned bottle opener at the thrift store.. I had never seen one like it.. and it works GREAT!!!!

A friend of Mom's got one of those wine aerator things for her. I really don't taste the difference but it sure is fun to use. :)

If I did drink white wine, I think that's the kind I would want - something oakey and not overly sweet. But most of the whites I've tried were too sweet for me.

"From what I understand, the wine with the caps can be better, right? Mom read some article about that."

That's okay. Embrace it! I'm a food snob, and will happily admit that.

I bought my mom, who is a big wine aficionado, boxed wine from Target one year for Christmas. I meant it as a joke, but damn if that wine wasn't really good. We all enjoyed it. Just goes to show that price sometimes doesn't matter. I also prefer wine with a twist cap, just because it's so much easier to open. Plus, corks can spoil. But I will admit, telling somebody to "put a screw cap in it" does not have the same ring as telling that person to "put a cork in it."

Many good wine producers have already switched to plastic 'corks' and I hate those, but in fact I don't mind a metal twist-off cap. It makes no difference to the taste .. though I have to say that deep in my brain is the nostalgic memory of sherry and whiskey bottles being undone at Christmas and they all had corks - with plastic (or bakelite?) tops, it's true - but corks nonetheless. They made such a delicious wet squeak when you un-popped them!

OMG, me too, Jay! Because the plastic ones don't fit back into the bottle the way a REAL cork does - they seem to expand too much, once opened.

Yes, and that's it. I LOVE that ritual of a real cork!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're having a fantastic week!

  50. LOL! Love your photos and I agree with many of your requirements. I don't like box wine, but I suppose you could consider it an adult Capri Sun and be okay with it. :-) I typically don't drink wine from twist-off caps, but have been pleasantly surprised at times at some that are actually pretty decent. However, I AM willing to drink wine in anything that holds liquid!! love, Love, LOVE the wine glass selections and now have some recycling ideas on what to do with those corks and bottles that are piling up around the kitchen! Great whimsical post today. I needed the distraction.

  51. Hey there Lisa!

"I typically don't drink wine from twist-off caps, but have been pleasantly surprised at times at some that are actually pretty decent."

Yes, so many people here have shared the same thing. So perhaps I need to try one.

Aren't they faaaaabulous? I need to start recycling my wine corks and doing some DIY projects!

  52. Another enjoyable post... as if there was any question that I'd have much good stuff to catch up on here.
Boxed wine. Haha! I don't drink that variety, but my friend and her mother do. It might be all they buy. lol Whatever gets a buzz on.
I actually have bought twist off bottles. Sure, I prefer a corked wine, but some brands aren't available anymore that way.
Also, I like to use a nice wine glass but have occasionally used one of my little decorative Moroccan type glassware.

I was telling you in another post way back that I liked Apothic 'Dark'. It was a limited release. Did you ever get to try that? Ron got me a case for my birthday knowing that it was eventually going to sell out. And last week.. he just bought the final 3 bottles the store we go to had. While there, he noticed Apothic had another one out called 'CRUSH' so he got me a bottle. It's pretty good, but I can't think about it toooo much because it was also a limited release blend.
I posted that wine cork chair picture on FB a little while back. Love it!!
It had a caption on it.... 'Not sure whether to go to an AA meeting ... or just sit down with a glass of wine and start working on the sofa' LOL!

So many people here have mentioned that they enjoyed twist off bottles, so perhaps I need to try one. However, BOXED wine is out of the question - HA!

" was telling you in another post way back that I liked Apothic 'Dark'. It was a limited release. Did you ever get to try that?"

Yes, I did and it was faaaaaaaaabulous! OMG...it was delicious! I have not tried the one called, CRUSH, but I'll look for it. Have you tried "Carnivor?" It's a cab and my latest craze. It's heavenly. Also, Menage a' trios has one called, "Midnight" and it's awesome!
