The reason for this post is because last week I went through a "Vintage Hollywood Movie" phase, in which I selected films from my classic DVD collection and watched them almost every single night.

In as much as I respect and admire many of the movies and actors of today, there was something much more alluring about the Hollywood of yesterday. Even though we currently have access to more advanced technology in today's movies, creating movie magic, movies back then felt more magical. And I think that's because much of the technology of today is often over-done and over-used that it's so blatantly obvious; therefore loses its magic.

Also back then, movie stars were considered movie stars because they had a certain sparkle that made them special. When you saw them on the silver screen, you knew why they were a star.Today we don't even use the words movie star, we say celebrity.

Today, movies are going for more realism and television seems to be more interested in producing reality shows.Yet years ago, people went to the movies and watched television to forget about real life. Personally, if I want to see something real, I'll watch a documentary. However when I watch a movie, I want to lose myself and be entertained by something that may or may not be real.

And lastly, where has all the glamour gone? Not only in films, but life in general.

So whenever I want to be reminded of a time when things were much different, I pop in one of my DVD's and look back to an age when movie stars were movie stars and Hollywood was still so synonymous with the word "glamour."

Please take a journey back in time with me, as I share some of my favorite leading ladies and men from the 30's, 40's and 50's.

Hope you enjoy....

Dorothy Dandridge

  1. Oooher, you just made my day. When I looked at Laurence Olivier and Paul Newman my stomach positively flipped.

I agree with you about the loss of glamour. When I see pictures of today's 'stars' all I see are attempts to reveal as much nakedness as possible. It takes the class out of stardom. We all have bodies, some better than others, but there is more attraction in NOT seeing it all. No, I'm with you on this one.... bring back the old-style glamour.

  2. Ron, what an excellent post! You're so right about today's movies--they're loud, expensive and filled with special effects, but they are simply NOT magical.

You made some excellent choices from Hollywood's Golden Age. My mother adored Paul Newman! Great post, buddy, have a great week and keep going for the glamour!

  3. Ron, I agree 100 percent -- Hollywood back in the day was sooo much more glamorous than today, and the actors and actresses oozed class. Yes, some got into trouble; some tossed away their talent and admirers, but on the whole? These were special people, weren't they? Today's "stars" seem to feel that outrageous behavior and making the covers of trash-magazines is the be-all and end-all of fame. Sad.

I love the photos you've selected here. Vivien Leigh, when she raised one eyebrow the way she did playing Scarlett O'Hara, was just fabulous! You've left off a few of my favorites -- Audrey Hepburn, Clark Gable, the young Steve McQueen, Rex Harrison, Gregory Peck, Jimmy Stewart, etc. -- but hey, you couldn't possibly include everybody. And besides, you've done an outstanding job tickling our appetites to rent some old movies ourselves!

Thanks for getting my morning off to an excellent start -- have a wonderful week! xx

  4. WONDERFUL post, Ron! I agree with what you said, "much of the technology of today is often over-done and over-used that it's so blatantly obvious; therefore loses its magic." Give me the classics from the Golden Age of Hollywood because they not only had interesting storylines, but were also works of art. They had less technology to work with yet, they were so exquisitely filmed.

Love the photographs you chose. How handsome James Garner was!

  5. A great photo collage, Ron! And I always get a kick out of a James Garner reference, as my grandma loved him!

I miss people dressing up, or at least, not dressing like they are ready to workout 24/7. Is it too much to ask, when you are paying $30 an entree, for people to NOT be wearing tshirts and sweatpants?

It's sad that people think wearing jeans is dressing up these days!

  6. I also like how actresses back there looked like real women instead of the stick figures we see today. There was a definite glamour and beauty back then that just does not exist today. (For the most part. Scarlett Johansson is a babe no matter how you slice it.)

"Years ago, people went to the movies and watched television to forget about real life." Ha! So true. Nowadays we turn on the TV and see...real life. Or an unrealistic version of real life. So much for escapist entertainment!

Hope you're having a great week, Ron!

  7. Oh Ron, I loved reading this post and seeing the photographs you selected. OMG...they're positively GORGEOUS! And I couldn't agree with you more, there is no such thing as glamour, and movies AND television are pretty much crap. I adore the styles of the 1930's and 40's! What I love about the picture of sexy Lana Turner is that she was sexy in a very classy way. That ensemble she's wearing is so sexy without being trashy.

Cary Grant was so handsome wasn't he? What a profile! And James Garner, sexy!

Thanks for sharing this today, Ron. I needed a bit a glamour because I'm having a very tough day at work. This post made me smile!

    Have a wonderful week X

  8. Hey there Valerie!

"When I looked at Laurence Olivier and Paul Newman my stomach positively flipped."

HA! Aren't they both stunning? One of my favorite Olivier movies was, Rebecca, because he looked drop-dead gorgeous! I love his cleft chin. So sexy!

"When I see pictures of today's 'stars' all I see are attempts to reveal as much nakedness as possible. It takes the class out of stardom. We all have bodies, some better than others, but there is more attraction in NOT seeing it all."

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING THAT because I feel the exact same way. Case in point: there are two versions of the movie, The Postman Always Rings Twice. The first one was made with Lana Turner and John Garfield in 1946, and the remake in 1981 with Jessica Lange and Jack Nicholson. Even though the 1981 version was more graphically sexual, the older (1946 version) was more powerful and sexy because left more to your imagination.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a super week!

  9. Hey there Rob!

The movies of yesterday were technically more simple yet, they had a more powerful effect when you watched them. They were MAGICAL.

I had such a hard time selecting the choices I made because there were so many I wanted to choose.

    "My mother adored Paul Newman!"

I MANY woman adored Paul Newman because he was so good-looking and such a great actor.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a fantastic week! Hope your first day at work yesterday went well. I'm so happy for you!

  10. Helloooooo Debbie!

I LOVED reading your first paragraph because I couldn't agree with you more!!! And yes, it is sad because the attention their outrageous behavior brings only makes them (to me anyway) uninteresting and unattractive. Hollywood back in the day wouldn't allow such ill- behavior.

"Vivien Leigh, when she raised one eyebrow the way she did playing Scarlett O'Hara, was just fabulous!"

OMG...yes! And she was the perfect choice for Scarlett. She captured every detail of the character and made her come alive. Flawless performance!

"-- Audrey Hepburn, Clark Gable, the young Steve McQueen, Rex Harrison, Gregory Peck, Jimmy Stewart, etc. --"

Those are some awesome favorites! Love them all!

"Give me the classics from the Golden Age of Hollywood because they not only had interesting storylines, but were also works of art. They had less technology to work with yet, they were so exquisitely filmed."

Yes, you are SO RIGHT ABOUT THAT. They movies back then were like works of art. And when you think that they only shot with black and white film, it makes those movies even more impressive because they had to know everything about shadows and highlights in selecting the right colors.

Wasn't James Garner a handsome man? What a great face!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a faaaatabulous week!

  12. Thank you :) I had so much fun selecting these photographs.

"And I always get a kick out of a James Garner reference, as my grandma loved him!"

HA! Me too! I thought he was the sexiest man. And even when he got older, he still kept his sex appeal. I loved his dark brown eyes and hair.

" Is it too much to ask, when you are paying $30 an entree, for people to NOT be wearing tshirts and sweatpants?"

AMEN! And is it also too much to ask that when you pay good money for a live theater production that the audience members dress up instead of looking like their attending a football game?!?

"It's sad that people think wearing jeans is dressing up these days!"

    I know :(

  13. Hola Denise!

So glad you enjoyed :) I had a blast selecting these photos and putting this post together. However, I had a very hard time picking just these because there were so many to chose from.

I've never been a TV fan. There is just something about television I don't enjoy. I used to watch it when I was a kid, but as an adult, it holds no interest for me.

"What I love about the picture of sexy Lana Turner is that she was sexy in a very classy way. That ensemble she's wearing is so sexy without being trashy."

Thank you for notice that because I thought the same thing. She was so sexy in that film but in a very tastefully, suggestive way.

"Cary Grant was so handsome wasn't he? What a profile! And James Garner, sexy!"

Cary Grant was SUCH a good-looking man. And yes, Garner was SE-XY!

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Hope you had a great day!

  14. "I also like how actresses back there looked like real women instead of the stick figures we see today. "

Oh Mark, I soooooooooooo agree with you about that. As you know, I prefer woman (and men) to look more natural than body-perfect. In fact, I like woman and men with some meat on their bones, I don't like thin or overly sculpted as if they spent 24-hours a day in a gym.

Yes, I also agree with you about Scarlett Johansson. And what I love about her appearance is that she looks more like a movie star of Hollywood's Golden Age. Such a beautiful lady!

" Nowadays we turn on the TV and see...real life. Or an unrealistic version of real life. So much for escapist entertainment!"

HA! You are spot on about that!

  15. Ron, I have always felt that I was born in the wrong era because my heart and soul are more connected to decades gone by. I love the 30's and 40's because there was such a classiness and coolness to way people dressed. If there is such a thing as reincarnation and past lives, I definitely think I lived during that time.

Great photos! I like the one of The Beverly Hills Hotel. Love those vintage cars! Vivien Leigh was beautiful indeed. Wow!

    Killer post, dude!

  16. Ron, both my husband and I read your post this morning but we had an early appointment we had to keep, so I wanted to wait until we got home to respond with my comment. What a wonderful post, the pictures, your words, all of it. You are so right about the lack of glamour and all the special effect movies that seem to be very popular over the past several years. Both my hubby and I can't stand the movies of today and often talk about how different they used to be. I am by no means a prude, but I can't stand all the violence and explicit sex in movies today. Back in the old days they didn't have to show you everything, which in my humble opinion, made it more sexy.

I loved Liz Taylor. Wasn't she such a beauty? I was sad by her passing away almost 5 years ago. I remember seeing A Place in the Sun (on VHS) and really enjoying it. Wonderful cast! She looked stunning in that dress. I remember seeing William Holden in several films. What a handsome man he was! Love those last photos of Paul Newman. I always admired that he and Joanne Woodward stayed married for so many years, when most Hollywood marriages didn't. You could tell that they really loved one another.

Enjoyable post, Ron, as always. Have a great week!

Can you believe how cold it's gotten these past few days? It feels like winter.

  17. Hiya Matt!

"I have always felt that I was born in the wrong era because my heart and soul are more connected to decades gone by."

And me as well! I feel VERY connected to the 30's and 40's. And btw, I definitely believe in reincarnation because when I was visiting Japan in 1996, I had some very intense spiritual experiences, as if I had lived there before. I especially felt that while in Kyoto. Since then, I feel deeply connected to the Japanese culture.

" I like the one of The Beverly Hills Hotel. Love those vintage cars! "

OMG...me too. As soon as I spotted the photograph online, I knew I wanted to use it. Aren't the cars faaaaaaabulous?

Hey there Elaine! Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your comment. And what a great comment it is!

"I am by no means a prude, but I can't stand all the violence and explicit sex in movies today. Back in the old days they didn't have to show you everything, which in my humble opinion, made it more sexy."

You and I sound alike because I feel the same way. I would rather "see" less and then use my imagination. To me, that's so much more sexy than total nudity.

"I loved Liz Taylor. Wasn't she such a beauty? I was sad by her passing away almost 5 years ago."

I loved her too. Not only a great beauty and actor, but also a great humanitarian. I actually met her (well, not met her but she walked passed me) on the night I went to see the Broadway musical, A Chorus Line, when I was living in NYC during the the mid-70's. And what totally blew me away was how breathtakingly beautiful she was in person. And she REALLY did have violet eyes!

". I always admired that he and Joanne Woodward stayed married for so many years, when most Hollywood marriages didn't.

Me too. And I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that they lived in Connecticut and not the West Coast. They purposely separated themselves from the industry; living a more normal life. Plus, I think they were always very deeply in love and supportive of one another.

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor. Have a fantastic week! OMG...I know, can you believe the sudden change in temps the past week? I'm not complaining though because I enjoy the cold weather.

  19. I'm no longer a big TV fan, Ron. I used to watch it all the time, but the quality of television has gone way down the tubes. And I'm so not interested in reality shows. I'm actually thinking about getting rid of my cable because I don't use it much, and it's so expensive!

  20. I hear you, Denise! The quality of TV is poopie- outside of maybe HBO. I've never had cable. If I want to watch something (like a TV show or movie) I just run it through my computer. I don't even have cable Internet, I still use DSL. But honestly, it's perfect for my usage on the Internet.

  23. ron, i'm not much of a film buff (i typed butt by mistake), but i know exactly what you mean when you said where has the glamour gone. like everything else, to h*ll.

Also back then, movie stars were considered movie stars because they had a certain sparkle that made them special. When you saw them on the silver screen, you knew why they were a star.Today we don't even use the words movie star, we say celebrity.""

loved what you said. today people are not really celebrities, but famous and i think the difference is the glamour. these people, the majority of them, just don't have it. there are a few who can still pull it off tho' but probably go unnoticed.

i think because of technology we know and see too much of the drama in people's lives. we don't get to watch them just on the screen, but everywhere because of social networking. we know all their business because either they post it or it's put out there by someone else. it's too much information. to famous people: keep yo' behind on the movie screen or in my tv, your "glamour" is not showing.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ron, this post made me feel transported back to a time that I should have been born. Is it just me, or were people more attractive back then? Lol No kidding, there was a certain style and class during those decades that sorely lacks today. I'm embarrassed for my generation because we have so sense style except messy.

Glorious photographs, each one more beautiful than the next. I saw the movie Gone With the Wind many, many years ago (on Netflix) and agree with you, Vivien Leigh was so incredibly beautiful. And those photos of Cary Grant are WOW! What a handsome man!

Thanks for sharing, Ron. I think I'll be checking out Netflix this weekend to see what classics I can watch!

Yes, you are soooooooooooo right about that!

And you last whole paragraph was BRILLIANT and you hit the nail on the head about technology and knowing people's personal business, which is too much information and takes away from anything glamorous. Back then, the Hollywood studios would never allow this kind of public display of their leading ladies and men.

  26. Hey ho Robert!

"Is it just me, or were people more attractive back then? Lol "

HA! I too feel the same, I look at the people back then and think how much more attractive they are. Maybe it's the way they presented themselves (style and grooming) but they seemed more beautiful and glamorous!

"I saw the movie Gone With the Wind many, many years ago (on Netflix) and agree with you, Vivien Leigh was so incredibly beautiful."

It's been ages since I've seen that film, but I think it's time I give it another view. It's a long film, but oh-so worth the time because it's a piece of art - both the story and the way they presented it on screen.

" And those photos of Cary Grant are WOW! What a handsome man!"

Wasn't he such a ? I own several of his films and enjoy him in both comedies and drama's. One of my favorite films of his is, Penny Serenade. His acting is so beautiful. He rips your heart out. GREAT film!

  31. I knew you'd have Grace Kelly in there! I loved her in Rear Window. Her fashion in that movie is unmatched in my opinion.

Aside from Paul Newman being delicious to look at, I also admire his pizza. Just went to buy some today, but they didn't have my favorite on hand.

Soooo..... guessing you didn't have much of a problem with the snow recently? You and I are probably the only two people not eager for summer to start. That said, Dave and I are going to try and hit Longwood Gardens late next week to see the tulips that will be in bloom until the end of April, provided they didn't all die in this last winter blast!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hey there Kathy!

Yes...and you were absolutely right because I did use Grace Kelly. You are so intuitive! And I did that for two reasons - one, she was born here in Philadelphia (East Falls) and two, she was (to me, anyway) the epitome of glamour, class and beauty.

"Aside from Paul Newman being delicious to look at, I also admire his pizza. Just went to buy some today, but they didn't have my favorite on hand."

HA! I agree, aside from his deeeelicious looks, his food products are YUMMY as well. I especially like his salad dressings!

"Soooo..... guessing you didn't have much of a problem with the snow recently? You and I are probably the only two people not eager for summer to start."

And you are right about that too! Yesterday, while I was as work, I kept running to the front windows of the store and looking at the HUGE snow flakes falling from the sky, Everyone was complaining and moaning about it, but I was dancing around the store like a little kid!

Have fun in Longwood Gardens! I went there several years ago and was so impressed by all the magnificent flowers. I especially loved the green house!

You are so right...there is a huge difference between the movies of old and the movies of today...it's a shame so much of the magic is gone. I still enjoy going to the movies as you know...but there sure is a difference! In terms of TV, I have my favorite shows...like Grey's Anatomy...that I have been watching for YEARS, but I pretty much have HGTV on all the time!! Yes, she sure was one beautiful lady! I saw her once in person while I was attending a Broadway show (A Chorus Line) back in the late 70's. She walked right past me while going to her seat. And it's true about her eyes, they really were violet!

Fav actors from that time: Bogart (natch!!!), Lauren Bacall, Lana Turner, Burt Lancaster (love Burt), Jeanne Crain, Grace Kelly....so many, many real STARS!!!

  44. OMG, Benze...I LOVE that movie! In fact, I actually have it on DVD and watch it a few times a year. Not only is it a great story, but Lana Tuner looked absolutely beautiful in that film!
