One of the most amazing things about New York City is the incredible amount of people who live, work, and travel there, walking the streets.

And it's ironic, I typically don't enjoy going to crowded social events or things like theme parks and crowded bars and restaurants because they make me feel claustrophobic. And yet, I can visit or even live in a populous city (such as New York), and the crowded streets don't bother me. In fact, I thrive on them.

Of course, there are times when I feel the need for a break from city life, but that's when I take a train out into the suburbs and chill for the day. However overall, I much prefer living within the stimulating atmosphere of a city; especially New York.

And here's a very interesting thing about New York, it's a city in which you are surrounded by thousands of people everyday, yet you can also be solitary if you choose to do so. And I like that because in as much as I enjoy being around people, there are days when I feel like being quiet and invisible.

And you can simultaneously do that in New York.

Another thing about living in a city is that the elderly are kept physically active and seem to maintain a healthy energy because urban life forces you to go outside, walk, take public transportation, mingle, and stay involved. City elders have a lot of vim and vigor. They also seem to have a very strong and resilient spirit.

I think the hearty, elderly people of New York City originally coined the saying, "Old age ain't no place for sissies."

Today, I would like to share with you the people in the streets of New York City.

And like with any photograph you take of the Big Apple, the action of the city and its people is so evident from the energy that emanates from each image.

For me, still pictures of New York are never still. They are filled with movement and sound...

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

  1. An enjoyable post, Ron. I found that the crowds of New York removed the feeling of alone-ness. In my country crowds do the opposite, they emphasise it. I wonder why that is? Your photographs made me wish I could go back into a crowded atmosphere but I'm afraid it is no longer possible. Still, I can dream, can't I?

Did I ever tell you about the time I went into Macy's and couldn't find my way out? What a hoot that was.

  2. Those are beautiful shots, Ron. I especially like the last one, with the reflection. Your photos make me wonder how many in the crowds are visitors and how many are city dwellers?

When my husband travels to NYC on business, I always tell him to send me a few pictures to enjoy. There's always something new to see!

    Have a great weekend, Ron!

  3. "For me, still pictures of New York are never still. They are filled with movement and sound..." I love how you said that. You are so right, Ron. And your photographs exemplify that! You really know how to capture the energy and essence of New York. I found it so interesting to scroll through each image and really look at all the people. I can't believe how many people there are in that city. Wow.

Great post, dude! Your photography is so inspiring!

  4. How wonderful it is to see you back, Ron! My blog has been relatively sparse due to my father being in the hospital three times early this year, so I've just now been catching up and feeling some normalcy.
And brought to one of my favorite topics; Manhattan for which I believe I have the "Woody Allen Syndrome." Its vibrancy is contagious. I'll never forget it rained on a day David and I were meeting his mother who happens to live in Manhattan. We couldn't find a taxi anywhere, but we danced through the raindrops and traffic, and got to the restaurant in 15 minutes; a record walking from the Path exit on 33rd & Bdwy to 42 & 6th!
I'm so happy to see your beautiful photos and to revisit, Ron. And can you believe Summer is here in no time?! Hope you had a wonderful Spring, and life's been good. All my love, Petra :))

  5. Fantastic pics, Ron! I look at these and feel homesick for my hometown, NEW YORK! What you say about the city and the energy there is so true. Many people feel as though the tempo of New York City is draining, but it never felt that way to me. On the contrary, I found it invigorating and supportive.

And you're right about the elderly who live in a city and their strong and resilient spirit. I think in general, city people remain strong and healthy because the city keeps them moving!

Great post, Ron! Love the shot of the young guy on the skateboard and the blur!

  6. Thank you, Bijoux :) That last one was one of the last shots I took before leaving NYC that day. I took that shot on the way to the bus station. The reflection you see in the windows is Macy's Department Store.

"Your photos make me wonder how many in the crowds are visitors and how many are city dwellers?"

I wonder the same thing too. However, I think the city dwellers walk more directly than the visitors, who are usually walking slower and trying to see all the sights.

"There's always something new to see!"

I agree! In all the times I continue to go back and visit NYC, I always see something new. That's what I love that city!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a grrrrrrrreat weekend!

  7. Hiya Matt!

Thank you :) One of the interesting things about taking pictures in a city like NY is that when you actually take the photograph, you don't always see what's inside the frame. It's not until I get home and upload the photos to my computer, where I can view them on a big monitor, do I see all the things I didn't notice when I took them.

There is always so much going on in NYC, that it's impossible to take it all in at once.

I know, aren't there A LOT of people in NY?

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy, Have a most excellent weekend!

  8. Hey there Elaine!

Thank you :) I took so many photographs on my last trip - 124!

"Many people feel as though the tempo of New York City is draining, but it never felt that way to me. On the contrary, I found it invigorating and supportive."

I feel the SAME EXACT WAY. I always compare the energy of NYC to an incredible "life-force" that is life-giving. Even when I lived there I felt that. To me, New York is a magical and special city.

"I think in general, city people remain strong and healthy because the city keeps them moving!"

    Ditto...i agree!

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor! Have a faaaabulous weekend!

  9. Helloooooooooo there Petra! It's soooooo great to see you, my friend! You have been in my thoughts lately; wondering how you (and your father) were doing. So sorry to hear that he was in the hospital so many times. I do hope he's better now.

" Manhattan for which I believe I have the "Woody Allen Syndrome." Its vibrancy is contagious."

HAHHAHAHA! OMG I loved that and think I have the same syndrome!

"We couldn't find a taxi anywhere, but we danced through the raindrops and traffic, and got to the restaurant in 15 minutes; a record walking from the Path exit on 33rd & Bdwy to 42 & 6th! "

What an AWESOME story! And that's the thing about Manhattan...it's magical!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. And yes, can you believe that Summer is here and running? Where did Spring go?!?

Sending much good energy and support to you and your father....

  10. Hello there Valerie!

"I found that the crowds of New York removed the feeling of alone-ness. In my country crowds do the opposite, they emphasise it. I wonder why that is? "

Yes, I feel the same way about the crowds of New York. And I think it's because of the energy within that city - even when your alone, you feel a part of something. It's like the energy there strings everyone together so that you never FEEL alone.

"Did I ever tell you about the time I went into Macy's and couldn't find my way out? What a hoot that was."

HA! No, I don't think I knew that but I have to be honest, I too got lost inside Macy's several years ago because it's MASSIVE and has so many floors. I can't believe all the escalators in that store!!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a lovely weekend!

  11. Ron, your photographs of the people in the streets of New York City are AWESOME!!! I've never been there, but just from your pics I get a sense of the energy. Your enthusiasm makes me want to experience it.

How long did you live there?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thank you, Candice :) The energy of the city is truly amazing. I think everyone should at least once experience NYC, just to experience it. It's not a place that everyone could live, and I understand. However, it's a city that has an energy that resonates with me - body and soul.

I lived there for 5 years. I went there to go to acting school and perform in live theater.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a wonderful weekend!!

  13. Ron, I love all these photographs but I think my favorite one is the first, the one of the produce stand on the street because it reminded me so much of when I lived there and those carts would come out during the summer months.

I love the I *heart* NY plastic bag hanging off the side!

As always, beautiful photos! Have a wonderful weekend, Ron x

  16. My drama teacher in high school suggested that I audition for an acting school in NY. So I did and was accepted. I went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. I stayed in NY for 5 years, while going to schools and auditioning for various shows.

  17. Great photos, Ron, and some very keen observations! I know that feeling of wanting to be part of the crowd and wanting to be alone at the same time. And New York let's you do that!

The crowds can drive you crazy--like tonight when I was trying to get through Grand Central Station! But when you can take your time and observe, you'll never run out of places to see!

Excellent post, buddy! Have a great weekend, buddy!

that's one of the things that makes new york great. no one is paying you any mind. everyone is focused on someone or something else. the city is like sitting and being silent with a friend and not feeling awkward.

    love it.

  21. Hey there Rob!

" I know that feeling of wanting to be part of the crowd and wanting to be alone at the same time. And New York let's you do that!"

It sure does. And it's also a city in which people appear to not be paying attention to what's going on around them, but they are.

"The crowds can drive you crazy--like tonight when I was trying to get through Grand Central Station! But when you can take your time and observe, you'll never run out of places to see!"

"no one is paying you any mind. everyone is focused on someone or something else. the city is like sitting and being silent with a friend and not feeling awkward."

Yes, exactly! And at the same time, everyone in New York is very conscious and aware of what's going on around them.

You and I have got to make plans to go into NYC this summer. I love going there with you!

Have a super weekend, my friend!!!!!

  25. Ron, you're doing an AMAZING job with your new camera -- these photos are outstanding! I can't help but wonder, though, why nobody seemed to mind you're capturing them as is. I mean, nobody wanted to primp a bit first? Put on a spot of lipstick? Run a comb through their hair? Perhaps they're used to camera in NYC...at least, more than here, where I'll bet I'd get a gazillion questions -- from What are you going to do with my picture? to Why me?

You're so right. These photos exude energy. I can totally see why you love the City the way you do! It's a great place to visit, but having that many people around all the time would, I'm afraid, get on my last nerve, ha!! To each his own, right?

    Happy Friday...enjoy the weekend! xx

  26. I love people-watching. Can't imagine a better place to do that than in NYC!

I've always wondered: can a person have vim but not vigor? How about the other way around? Is there an individual full of vigor but lacking vim?

Have a great weekend, Ron! Full of vim AND vigor, I hope!!

  27. On an iPhone you can set that camera so that any photo can be brought to life by holding your finger on it. Just for a few seconds, the photo goes live. I did that in my mind with these photos, because they almost seemed like brief videos. I stopped at each one and imagined it in motion briefly. Because that's how these pictures look to me - as if you can almost see the people in them moving through their day.

  28. Aw, thank you, Debbie :) I am so enjoying this new camera and experimenting with the settings. I'm so glad I purchased it!

"I can't help but wonder, though, why nobody seemed to mind you're capturing them as is. I mean, nobody wanted to primp a bit first? Put on a spot of lipstick? Run a comb through their hair? Perhaps they're used to camera in NYC...at least, more than here, where I'll bet I'd get a gazillion questions -- from What are you going to do with my picture? to Why me?"

Yes, that's it exactly...people are used to cameras in NYC, so they sincerely don't care if you take a picture and they are in it. Also, NYC is very populated; therefore it's nearly impossible to not have people in your photographs. People all over the city are taking pictures constantly, so I'm sure New Yorkers are used to it. That's another reason why I love NYC, I can take pictures freely! But like where you live, the people of Philadelphia are very reserved about having their pictures taken and question you on, why, where and how you're going to use the picture.

"It's a great place to visit, but having that many people around all the time would, I'm afraid, get on my last nerve, ha!! To each his own, right?"

Yes, you're right...to each his own. NYC is definitely not for everyone.

Mark, you are absolutely right...there is literally no other better place to do that than in NYC! And what's even more incredible is that you can go to a completely different area everyday and see something completely different than the last. The city is so diverse!

"I've always wondered: can a person have vim but not vigor? How about the other way around? Is there an individual full of vigor but lacking vim?"

Bwhahahahahahaha! OMG...I laughed my ass off at that, Mark!!!!! You too damn hilarious! I LOVE your sense of humor!

  31. Hey there Ron! I have missed you!! I took a blog hiatus too basically because I ran out of inspiration. I felt like most of my posts had gone unnoticed or only one or two comments and I lost the reason I was doing it. So I changed up my form, I have decided to try more of a vlogging angle but instead of focusing on doing it with people I am going to do it on my own. I sure hope you will come watch me as i grow with this new medium. It will be posted just where my blog is :)

Anyways, I am loving the photos you took! I am like you and I dont normally like crowded places but sometimes they really are the absolute best photo ops. I look forward to connecting with you again my friend!

  32. Hellooooooooooooo thee Shae! It's so great to see ya, my friend!!!!! I've miss YOU too!

Yes, I too took a long break last summer and then slowly got back to blogging after I got out of the hospital and was feeling better in October. However, I'm only posting once a week because I decided to pull back on how much time I spend blogging. Also, my new job is taking up more of my time than my previous job so I just don't have the time like I used to.

GREAT idea about vlogging! And yes, I would love to stop by and watch your videos. If you could, please stop back (or email me) and leave your blog URL address because I no longer have it.

Thanks so much for stopping by and letting me know you're still around. Hope you're enjoying your summer!!!!

  33. WOW so many people!!!! My favorite shot of yours is the skateboard.. and further down the one with the dark haired girl in the middle. They are awesome! There is a lot of color too. And OH how I would love to go to the shops and food places!!!! "World's best cup of coffee...." right?!

This reminded me of going to China Town in San Francisco. You really had to watch where you were going... and if you needed to change course it was a task! We LOVED it though - that was our favorite place we went to. But I don't think I could live there. Visiting though - it looks SO FUN!

  34. Hey there Katherine!!

Thank you :) I absolutely LOVE taking photographs in NYC because there is so much to look at. Also, I always feel so inspired whenever I'm there because that city has such a creative energy.

" And OH how I would love to go to the shops and food places!!!! "World's best cup of coffee...." right?!"

Yes, and what's so interesting is that there are so many places to choose from to eat and drink.

I've never been to San Francisco but I have a feeling I would LOVE it. And yes, I totally understand that city life is definitely not for everyone. Many people can visit a city but not everyone can live there.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a faaaaaabulous weekend!

  37. You always capture such interesting features of the city. I don't think I could live in such a large city...waaaayyyy too much humanity for me! :-) But, from a people-watching sport, I'm sure it's fantastic! Hope you've been well these past few weeks. I've been out of town and out of the loop for too long.

  38. Thank you, Lisa :) I always feel so inspired whenever I go to NYC and take photographs.

Yes, I totally understand your feelings about the city because many people feel the same. It's just too much humanity and movement. Yet for some reason, the energy of NYC makes me feel more focused, creative and calm. I know that sounds odd, but it's true.
