On the second day we were in New York City, my brother and I decided to visit Lower Manhattan. I wanted to show him a view of the city via the Brooklyn Bridge, so we took a subway to Brooklyn and then walked back over the bridge. We also stopped by the 9/11 Memorial.

Here, take a look...

Westfield World Trade Center
I love the shape of this building. It looks like the wings of a bird!

Even after 15 years, anytime I visit this memorial I still get very emotional. It's heartbreaking.

These next photographs are views of Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge

My brother Tom and I taking a selfie. Hi, Tom!

Brooklyn Bridge Love Locks

And as a bonus, here are a few extra photographs I took of some amazing (and diverse) architecture found in New York City...

Oh, and one last shot. I took this on the street in front of our hotel one afternoon. It's a vintage Cadillac. Isn't it cool?

Have a grrrreat rest of your week everyone!

  1. Some wonderful architecture there, Ron. So many variations, shapes and sizes. I would be in my element if where I live was the same or similar. I didn't get to cross the bridge, I was on a coach at the time and it just waited there - reason for the wait unknown! I did see the site of that terrible tragedy when it was bare and heartbreaking. Thank you for sharing the photograph of the memorial. Yes, I teared up!

Weekend approaches; have a nice one, my friend.

  2. What beautiful shots, Ron. I particularly love the one of the Brooklyn Bridge in sepia tone. I have not been back to the 9/11 site since it was completed. I hope I get the opportunity some day. Are there many love locks on the bridge? I've heard that it's discouraged because of the added weight?

  3. Good morning Valerie!

I feel the same way. I love living/visiting areas that are diverse in their architecture because it makes things so interesting. I like the old mixed with the new.

" I did see the site of that terrible tragedy when it was bare and heartbreaking."

Yes, it's like you can still feel the tragedy of that day. I haven't been inside the museum yet, but hope to get there soon.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a faaaaabulous weekend!

  4. Thank you :) I edited that photograph after I uploaded it. I used two different tones, but liked the sepia best.

"I have not been back to the 9/11 site since it was completed. I hope I get the opportunity some day. "

I actually didn't get there until several years after it was completed. One day I hope to visit the museum.

Surprisingly, there are a lot of the love locks still on the bridge. I saw this sign : http://www.brooklynpaper.com/assets/photos/39/42/dtg-love-locks-lox-signs-2016-10-14-bk01_sl.jpg which I should have taken a picture of but didn't, that discourages people from attaching more locks.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a terrific rest of your week and weekend!

  5. Gorgeous photographs, Ron! The first one is strikingly powerful! I've not been to the 9/11 memorial but got emotional just looking at your photographs and reading your words. The selfie of your and your brother is so cute!

    Love the vintage Cadillac!

  6. Ron, these photos are superb!! I've never been to the Memorial, but Domer has (and proclaimed it very moving!). Your architecture shots are fascinating, too. I can almost feel the energy of the city just by looking at them.

And thanks for the selfie with your brother (you each must look like one of your parents, right?) My sis and I are like that. You can sort of tell we're related, but I've got cousins that look more like me than she does, ha!

You're not expecting SNOW this weekend, are you? We're supposed to get COLD, but not that cold. I guess our Fall is finally coming to an end. Sigh.

    Happy rest-of-your-week and weekend! xx

  7. Debbie took the word I was also going to use to describe how I felt about this pictures....SUPERB! No kidding, Ron, these are so impressive! The one of the Freedom Tower peak looks like it came out of a magazine. I agree with you, the feelings you get when visiting the memorial are heartbreaking. I remember the first time my husband and I visited, you could hear a pin drop with emotion.

Wonderful shot on the Brooklyn Bridge. What a beautiful view of Lower Manhattan. Love the sepia picture!

Once again you make me miss my native hometown *sigh*

By the way, can you believe the cooler temperatures we've been getting? I hope it stays like this for Thanksgiving. I love this time of the year! X

  8. Greetings Candice!

Thank you :) I took that first shot (of the Freedom Tower) very quickly and didn't know how it would turn out because it was a cloudy, gray day and wasn't sure about the lighting.

"I've not been to the 9/11 memorial but got emotional just looking at your photographs and reading your words."

Many people who visit get emotional. I can still remember the terror of that day, back in 2001, watching it all unfold on TV. I can hardly believe it's been 15 years. It feels like yesterday.

Isn't the Cadillac a beaut? I love vintage cars.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a super weekend!

  9. Hey there Elaine!

Thank you :) I took the one of the Freedom Tower VERY quickly and wasn't sure the light setting was correct. It was a gray day, so I was uncertain that there would be enough light.

" I remember the first time my husband and I visited, you could hear a pin drop with emotion."

Yes, I know what you mean. The Memorial very moving, especially reading all the names along the edge of those who died that day. It's so sad.

To me, there is no better view of Manhattan Island than from the Brooklyn Bridge. And I love the walk!

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor. Have a great rest of your week and weekend.!

P.S. OMG...and I am sooooo loving this colder weather. I had off today and spend the whole day outside, walking around, taking pictures, and savoring the beautiful Fall day!

  10. Hello there Debbie!

Aw...thank you, my friend :) I took SO MANY pictures while in NYC (160) so it took me some time to sift through them all, deciding which ones to keep and which ones to delete.

"I can almost feel the energy of the city just by looking at them."

That's New York, even in photographs you can feel its energy. It's such an amazing city!

My brother and I have different mothers but the same father. I look a lot like my father (and his side of the family) and my brother looks a lot like my stepmother's side of the family. We don't look much alike, but we have a lot similarities in our personalities.

"You're not expecting SNOW this weekend, are you? We're supposed to get COLD, but not that cold. I guess our Fall is finally coming to an end. Sigh."

I checked the forecast today and it didn't show anything about snow, although I'd be SO happy if it did! But will say that it definitely feels like Fall weather because the temps have dropped considerably; leaving the air chilly. OMG...I love it!

Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a great rest of your week and weekend too!

  11. "Even after 15 years, anytime I visit this memorial I still get very emotional. It's heartbreaking." I agree, Ron, visiting the 9/11 Memorial is truly heartbreaking. It's been years since I've been back to New York. The last time I was there, my cousin and I went by and spent a few hours walking around. The pools are so beautiful, but also sad because of where the Twin Towers once stood.

You pictures are always SO good! There is nothing more dramatic than seeing Manhattan by way of the Brooklyn Bridge. It's strange though not seeing the Twin Towers there, isn't it? For so many years they were a New York City skyline landmark!

Love the photo of Tom and you!

Have a wonderful weekend, Ron x

  12. Hola Denise!

Yes, the pools ARE beautiful, you're right. But they are also sad. I remember the time I went to the top of the observation deck of the South Tower back in late July of 2001. Standing there seeing the pool where it once stood is chilling.

No, I have not been to the museum yet. The tickets are very expensive, and I'm also not sure whether I want to actually see all the remains that were preserved after the towers came down.

"There is nothing more dramatic than seeing Manhattan by way of the Brooklyn Bridge. "

    You said it!

"It's strange though not seeing the Twin Towers there, isn't it? For so many years they were a New York City skyline landmark!"

Yes, and it's ironic you mentioned that because I watched the movie, Moonstruck, a few nights ago and there is a shot of Manhattan where you can see the Twins Towers in the background. How sad.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a wonderful weekend as well!

  13. Wow Ron, the images of the Freedom Tower and 9/11 Memorial Pool are beautiful, but also very moving. I think 9/11 is one of those happenings that will never be forgotten or lessen in grief. I can't imagine what it must be like for anyone who had friends or family members who died on that tragic day.

Awesome pictures of the Brooklyn Bridge and views of the city. One of these days I have got to get my butt to New York so that I can see it for myself.

The final photograph of the Cadillac ROCK, dude! What a stellar shot!

Your photos are just amazing! I love the sepia toned one of the Brooklyn Bridge. Did you go inside the Oculus too? A lot of empty space in there - quite nice too.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thank you, Fiona :)

No, I didn't go inside the Oculus, however, the next time I'm in NYC I will. I hear it's really beautiful inside. In fact, the company that I work for will be opening a store before Christmas inside.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a fantastic weekend!

  16. Hiya Matt!

" I think 9/11 is one of those happenings that will never be forgotten or lessen in grief. I can't imagine what it must be like for anyone who had friends or family members who died on that tragic day."

You're absolutely right. And yes, I can't imagine that either. There were many people from Philadelphia who worked in the World Trade Center and died that day, yet I didn't know them personally. I can't imagine the grief their family members and loved ones went through on that day, and continue to go through.

" One of these days I have got to get my butt to New York so that I can see it for myself."

Oh, you must...you must get there one day! I think everyone should visit NYC at least once in their lifetime.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a most excellent weekend!

  17. If my girlfriend and I do come to New York, I 'll be sure to let you know in advance so that maybe we could meet up. We would love that!

  18. Yes, please do. I would love to meet up with you both!

  19. Ron, I always enjoy your photographs but I have to say these are some of my favorites yet. There is something really special about the way you captured the city that makes it look almost gothic. I love the shadowy feel to so many of these. The sky in the second to last photo is so beautiful!

I'm sure the feelings one gets when visiting the memorial are intensely emotional. I know how sensitive I am so I probably start crying.

Great shot of the vintage caddy because the picture itself actually look vintage!

    Have a great weekend, Ron

  20. Hey there Robert!

Thank you :) On the day I took most of these photographs, it was a gray and cloudy day so I think that had something to do with why they appear Gothic-looking.

"I'm sure the feelings one gets when visiting the memorial are intensely emotional. I know how sensitive I am so I probably start crying."

Visiting the Memorial Pools is so moving. The memorial itself is so beautiful but it's also very sad. 9/11 was such a devastating day for America because we no longer felt safe.

They were using that Cadillac (and other vintage cars) parked on the street that day because they were filming something.

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a superb weekend!

  21. LOVE these pics, Ron! If (and when) we ever do get out to NYC, the 9/11 Memorial and Freedom Tower are must-stops for sure. It's nice to see the Love Locks - the waterfront in Portland is inundated with those things, too. Have a wonderful weekend, okay?

  22. Hey there Mark! Thank you, buddy :)

"If (and when) we ever do get out to NYC, the 9/11 Memorial and Freedom Tower are must-stops for sure. "

Yes, ABSOLUTELY! I am so looking forward to finally meeting you and Tara and sharing the sights of NYC!

Wow, I had no idea the Love Locks were also in Portland, I thought that was a New York City, Brooklyn Bridge thing?!

Thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you're enjoying a faaaaaaabulous weekend!

    X to you and Tara

  23. We may even get a bit of snow flurries on Saturday!

  24. Yes, I heard that from someone at work today and was completely surprised (and happy) because I didn't see snow in the forecast earlier in the week!

  25. Great photos, Ron! It looks like you guys had a place. The Ground Zero images are especially moving. Doesn't feel so strange to be down there? All those names can really get to you.

Glad you two had such a great time! Come back soon!

  26. I mean to write "had a blast!" Oy, I'm getting softie the head!

  27. Hey there Rob!

"The Ground Zero images are especially moving. Doesn't feel so strange to be down there? All those names can really get to you."

Yes, it most certainly does feel strange. Back in September I watched a documentary about the passengers who were on first plane (Flight 11) that hit the World Trade Center and saw that actor Anthony Perkins's wife ( Berry Berenson Perkins ) was on that plane.

My brother and I had such a great time in NYC. He loved it!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. Have a terrific week!

  32. Hello Nat!

I agree, NYC is such an amazing city! So much to see and do.

"The 9/11 Memorial is so moving. I found the Staten Island 9/11 Memorial incredibly poignant too."

You know, I've never visited the Staten Island Memorial, I will have to make a point to go there the next time I'm in the city. Thank you for mentioning it.
